How to Rig a Grapple Anchor

- This is how to rig a grapple. The anchors are meant to be recovered easily. Grapple anchor rigging with a long rope and a good anchor chain. Without an anchor chain, the anchor won't set at the correct angle, it can't grab a good hold. Any chain will do. It help weigh down the anchor as well.
How to Rig a Grapnel Anchor
Get a piece of rope, say, with a 1,000 lbs breaking strength. Make sure your grapple anchor has holes in both the rope an bottom. Now you can rig it slider-style, making it easy to dislodge when you go to haul anchor.
Proper grapple anchor rig involves tying a font foot or so length of rope with several many half hitches to secure it properly. You need an anchor hitch, three half hitches and an stopper knot. Proper grapple anchor rigging also makes it much easier to haul anchor, especially if lodged against a heavy tree or something.
Remember rigging a grapple anchor need a way to easily recover the anchor. Otherwise you'll lose a bunch of anchors out there. Anchors ain't cheap, but a simple piece of heavy rope is cheap.

Thank you for this video. It's been 3 years now that I set up my anchor like this on my kayak and it worked every time. I never tried the zip tie way the ideal never set right with me.

this is genius! Most people put a cable tie but I think this is more elegant and you dont have to hope that cable tie breaks if need be.

So true - I lost a Bruce anchor recently that I had for years and I had a little cable tie (probably 20lb rated) for the break away. Well it got stuck and try as I might, I could not get it to break away. I paddled my yak fore, aft, side to side, and even used my spare paddle for leverage (but ended up cracking it). I must have spent an hour trying to get it loose and contemplated going down 12 feet to try to get it, but it was pretty rough water and like chocolate milk. Oh well, RIP little Brucie! I'm definitely more hopeful for this method on my next anchor.
Plus you're not polluting the waterways with more plastic.
I'm all for innovation and knowing multiple ways to accomplish something because there are usually pros and cons for each method given a particular situation. That being said, sometimes the old tried and tested way of doing something is the best way to do it.
@@noobsmoke79 keep a couple of Boyes on your boat, if you get an anchor snagged, put the boys on and then it will leave a floating marker and you can try to retrieve it another time, another thing if you have tidal waters and it’s prone to trees floating down it. Have your anchor rope just looped (bowline) over your securing and leave boue attached to rope, then if you notice a barge trunk going to hit your boat and you don’t have time to haul in, just drop your line, let tree pass and the motor back to it

First time I've seen this approach, after watching a bunch of videos on using breakaway zip ties on these grapple anchors. Like your technique! Thanks for the helpful video! I'm going to try the breakaway rigging first, just because I'm new to the grapple anchors (been using other types) and the breakaways are simpler and I want to see how that approach works, hands on, OK, so the real truth is I need to watch your video a few more times and also get better with my knots. After the first couple breakaways breaking, though, for sure I'm trying your brilliant slide rigging approach. Maybe it will turn out I only anchor in muddy soft bottom lakes and never break a failsafe, lol.

Thank you I kept seeing guys putting cable ties on the grapnel and thought it was a shitty setup especially in waves, I have decided to rig my anchor with your slide rope.
Yeah, the slide rope works pretty well. That cable tie seems like a recipe for death.

Great tip on using this technique with a folding anchor. Shoreline Marine makes a couple of great kits that accomplish similar results
Yup, it's a method that works with other type of anchors as well.
excellent idea. makes much more sense than the zip tie method. using the zip tie method i can see getting the anchor snagged, breaking the zip tie and not having any to replace it with and no longer having a useable anchor for the rest of the trip
Yeah, I grew so frustrated with the zip tie method, I had to come up with something else.

Damon, good idea if you are in a current. However if you are in slack water your boat can circle and slide your shackle to the front of the anchor and unhinge it. Here's an alternative. tie your rope to the bottom of the anchor . Then, instead of running your rope through the eye, use a small cable tie through the eye and secure to the rope. Then if you get snagged up, a quick jerk on the anchor line will snap the cable time and you can pull your anchor right up.

This video helped me out a lot. Im going to use this type of anchor in conjunction with an anchor wizard. I don’t know if an anchor chain will work with the anchor wizard but I’ll certainly try. I am however definitely rigging the anchor this way.
Yeah, this kind of rigging definitely works. If you look at the big ships, they all have a big anchor chain and use some kind of large scale Anchor Wizard-type winch.

The zip tie is used so you pull the anchor from other direction the way he shows is wrong !
Well, he has a name: Damon. Also, what what if you leave the zip ties at home? The system shown here does allow you to pull form the other direction. You simply put your boat in reverse and pull from the other direction. The line will slide to the other end of the anchor. There's always more than one way to do things. Sigh, I'm not sure why you care about how I rig my anchors. You are not the center of the universe.
