Some days ago I participated in a masterclass with a heavily recognized chilean pianist (she was a pupil of Arrau) and she told us that having a list with pieces that we could almost always bring out of our pocket is very useful, and that it's unnecessary to play them everyday but, for example, every two weeks or one week, it will depend on every person, in order to build a larger and larger repertoire.

Yes I absolutely agree, love that advice!

Amazing video! You literally answered to all the questions that I had in my mind for a long time. I am preparing for conservatory exam and live in Ankara(you filmed that vid in my favorite concert hall tho! ❤) so it motivated me. Hope to come to your concert one day😍❤️❤️

Wow, that's a beautiful concert hall, Danae; thanks for showing us around! I'm happy to see that you're still busy playing concerts. It seems that so many scheduled concerts are still being cancelled in Europe and the U.S. Is that why you're in Turkey? Have a great day!

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Unfortunately, many concerts are being cancelled, but luckily, those were still able to take place. It’s different from country to country. My next concerts this month are in Greece and Sweden. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that everything will take place!

Great topic. I was concerned about it. It’s sometimes overwhelming to keep difficult pieces fresh while learning new ones.

Honestly, you are light years above my level, but these tips are helpful. PS - I bombed my first piano recital. Still, your videos helped me not bomb that bad, so cheers.

Haha that’s the spirit! 💪🏻 And all the best for the next one! The first try usually never works out that well but practicing performing will make you feel more comfortable in this situation 🤗

@ well I’m going to start playing at some nursing homes for free. I’ve realized I can say, “I’m a concert pianist,” after I do that.

Hey do you have any ideas on how to keep track of a fairly sizeable repertoire? As in, keep an organized database / spreadsheet / whatever, of the hundreds or maybe few thousand or so different songs / pieces I know across multiple genres? (And the probably few thousand or so more that I'd like to learn as well.)
Often I'll have "forgotten" something, until I hear it or it randomly runs through my head for the first time in years or a few decades. I've had quite a few moments where I was like "I wish I had thought of or played that one at some time in the somewhat recent past!" Also quite often I might remember how a song goes (or in many cases a specific recorded arrangement - if it's something I'm really familiar with I've sometimes been able to hear only 1 or 2 notes from that recording and recognize the piece / song), but I can't remember the name. Then there are the less frequent times when I remember the name and can't remember how it goes. (Or, I forget both for a while, but they're in the back of my memory somewhere and I wish it was easier to keep track of them all.)
For example, for quite a while (maybe a year or so I forget now) I had a song running through my head and just could NOT remember the name of it! One day I think in November this past year, I was watching a Twitch stream, and someone had that song playing as background music. I asked what it was, and it turned out to be Beautiful by Christina Aguilera.
Now -- well, at least this past week that is (cause as I was typing this I started re-remembering part of the song itself), I could remember the name of the song, but wasn't remembering how it went.
Then there are the times when I'll play one song (or think of it if I'm not at the piano) ... and in the middle of it, I end up switching to another one. I actually did that on a live stream on Twitch a bit over a year ago 😂
I started off playing the hymn "All That Thrills My Soul is Jesus" ... and each time I got to the last part of the chorus, I ended with "Face to Face" (with Christ my Savior).
If you look at music for those two hymns, the 2nd little phrase in the chorus of both songs are the same, so it's easy to switch from one to the other.
(Also the basic timing structure is quite similar on both songs, as well as another hymn - "The Unveiled Christ" - that I recently accompanied my mom on the piano.)
Also several times in the 2000s or so, I would be playing for church when they would have the children and teens up front singing several songs. There was one song they would often sing (God Can Do Anything But Fail), that ... well, toward the end of it, it shared the same chords with part of the original Super Mario Bros theme ... so yes, I'd slip a little bit of that and some sound effects in. 😂

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Haha that sounds fun! Being able to switch so easily means that you probably have a great musical ear, so that’s wonderful. 🤗
As for keeping track of a large repertoire on a pure practical level, I can recommend the forscore app which I use in order to organise all my scores on my iPad.

@ Ah yeah, I've been told I have a good music ear, I play by ear a lot. 😄 I can also read music some too, at least simpler music, but it's more of a challenge; and more complex music I mostly know by hearing it. For example, either Fur Elise or Moonlight Sonata 1st movement, or one like that, I recently saw the sheet to it and was like 🤯 WHAT is THIS?! 😱 and I know those fairly well by ear. (And I haven't been able to play Fantasie Impromptu yet, and idk if I'd be able to get very far in the 3rd movement of Moonlight Sonata.)
Don't know if I've mentioned in a comment before, but my mom has told (well, written in a keepsakes book) of a time when....
Well, my sister had been at the piano, playing Mary Had A Little Lamb. When she got up, I plopped myself down on the bench, and started playing it after her. (Mom also said singing robustly, but that never took off for me and I by a LONG shot lack confidence in my singing ... yeah I can sing on tune especially in a group / choir, but I hate the actual tone of my voice with solos or quartets or less.)
I had never played it before (and she doesn't specifically say, but I don't think I had the music in front of me either). It was March 1985, about a month before I turned 4. 😊
Anyway 😁 So since I play mostly by ear, have some difficulty reading more complex music (I do make up arrangements for hymns & things from the score in hymnals, and hearing various arrangements), and probably well over 90-95+% (maybe >99%+?) of the music I know I've never even SEEN the scores for them (and many are older songs/pieces that are long out of print), and I use an Android phone and Windows & Linux on PC (not an iPhone/iPad or Mac) ...
I think forScore probably wouldn't work too well for me. 😂
Speaking of songs vs pieces, what term would you recommend using (or is common and maybe I'm not aware of that fact) that encompasses everything? (I've generally used "songs" as an all-inclusive but is there something better I should say instead?)
