- There's a lot of love out there for the MK7 generation Golf R. BUT, there the MK8 Golf R is simply better. Sure, there are some frustrating user interface controls, but it's better in every other way when compared to it's predecessor...here's why.
Golf R all the way!!!! Just got my new one…the final 6 spd and LOVE it!! Traded my 2018 Golf R which I also loved!
so stoked to have the last manual R in the US... with a few modifications these cars are ridiculous.
Wish we got the 6-speed :(

Dont kid yoursleves, the R is superior to any of those mentioned in this video.

I’ve always liked VW Golfs, and this looks like a generational improvement over the previous Mk7.5 R series. Gearbox and engine appear well matched and provide a great driving experience. I’ll keep my EV which also performs rather well albeit with far less noise, but appreciate this excellent review and introduction to the new Golf R.

Fair review but comparisons between the Golf and Civic "R"s always leave things out. (1) The Honda is 18 inches longer than the Golf. The phrase "I can fit in there" is part of the "hot hatch" appeal. The Honda doesn't have it. (2) The seating is far more comfortable in the Golf. The Honda seats are "race" seats that cannot ever be described as "comfortable" or "easy to get in or out of." Yes, the Honda seats provide better lateral support but good luck getting in or out of them in a parking lot when you can't open your door all the way. (3) The sight lines and visibility are better in the Golf. You are perched high enough in the Golf to see everything. In the Honda you sit low and gaze out over the longer hood. (4) The Civic is far more expensive out the door. The Civic has a lower MSRP but Honda has baked deal mark-ups into its production strategy to create the appearance of "resale value retention." In the US, you can get "out the door" of an Acura dealer with an Integra S for less than a Civic R. With all of that said, I would have bought the Integra S had I not been able to get a Golf R with a 6 speed manual. This is the last year for the manual Golf in the states but that sealed the deal.
Mk8.5 more power but it have petrol particulate filter.Just be happy and enjoy with mk8.
Bought a I30 N yesterday over a Golf R.
It's just a better drivers car, and more fun. I was very close to going R, but deal breaker for me was the infotainment screen, and haptic buttons. They are as crap as most car reviews suggest. I couldn't even turn the radio on a test drive FFS. The steering feel and way better turbo lag are also superior. Ride quality the same. Type R only manual for my wife & family car no good for many. I believe Hyundai reliability and customer service is superior as well.

Agree. they've nailed the exterior design but interior just sucks.
The infotainment is very different but different doesn't mean it's bad. The things that most reviewers have an issue with changes once they learn all the new short cuts and settings.
@@ruki9043 came from a MK7 GTI, took me less than a week to get use to new interior. No issues that would lead me to not want all the +'s it comes with over the last generation. With a few mods it's an absolute beast. Get's plenty of attention too.
@@du3lcitiz3n same here 🤣 after a few days it was second nature. The functionality is actually easier than conventional cars in my opinion. I have all my shortcuts know where everything is without looking. Bought mine back in 2022 vw_gh0str if you want to see it 🤤

I would never pay full price for a CTR just for the fact that it is front wheel drive.
It does mean it is a little lighter

Very desirable car but a lot of coin!
I’d have CTR over the Golf R all day long. Manual gearbox being one very good reason, the second being to avoid the Golf’s awful cost cutting UI. The CTR looks better too.
UI no problem ; it's been over criticized
