Haven't been up there fishing for a few years. Last time I was there I caught a nice 22" brown. Fishing was crap up high, not much rain to get the water up. We took off to the bottom about a mile up from the lake and got into some nice fish fresh out of the lake on plugs. That was awesome! Pere Marquette

Hell yea this gets me pumped. We're getting a lot of kings coming up the Colombia river right now. Can't wait cause this weekend I'm going plunking below a dam to catch me my first king of the season. Wish you were down here in Oregon lots of Chinook this year.
I hope your correct! I worked through last 2 seasons. Except for 2 in town trips by my house. Which were good! Man its been tough most of the time down on southern part of the state.

Good for you. When I grew up in MI going to college, I feasted on a freezer of salmon, deer, rabbit, squirrel, steelhead. Like you said, it's a well earned meal. Not everybody has the time or resources to fish them in the Lakes when they're fresh.

If you can get a bright one. I like to throw em on the grill. Covered in mayo, lemons and fresh dill . Salt and pepper is great on salmon too

Just about to take my birthday trip on the Marquette. This will be my first time taking a centerpin hopefully I don’t get spooled haha
I was gonna try running a trailer hook like that does it help a lot with hookups bc this year I’ve noticed lots of short bites
I think it increases my hookup ratio, hard to say for sure though. Between that and the peace of mind of having two hooks in the fish, it's worth it to me to take the extra time to rig the trailer hook up

That's a more unique opinion i figure. There's a reason why you can't go to the restaurants and get a brown trout dinner. Even though its spread world wide,its a very adaptable and easy enough to farm......That said i respect the opinion. Personally i hate eating all of the salmonids genus. which probably sounds crazy to many
Michael Phillips there are several upscale wineries in my area of Michigan with wild rainbow and brown trout on the menus.

Glad I came across your video. Great content, passion for the sport, great shares! MSU tested salmon meat quality over the course of their 4th year of life years ago. No measurable difference! So, Bon Appetite! Try grilled, skin down, lemon pepper and butter, 12 minutes. Cover with Parmesan. Cover till cheese browns slightly and fillet releases from the skin. Serve on wild rice. Also, try Maple Syrup on the filets. Wonderful.
Guessing I have caught thousands, you have a good pattern. I would fish a slip bobber with a stop, both both work. Try fighting the fish with your rod close and parallel to the water. The fish usually won’t run so much. If you fight vertical to the water, the fish runs.
That brown u caught and released was a toad! If the big browns are aggressive, then the salmon are dropping eggs. That hen u caught looked spawned out....That fish, with a mouth that is rounded and only opens to the eye is a female. The males have a mouth that extends past the eye and this time of year are hooked in the jaw.
Be sure and stick a stick in the anal orifice before you lift the fish. Subsequently, preventing dumping loose eggs. Rinse loose eggs with river water immediately, which seals the eggs and turns them into rubber balls that tie in sacks well.

There were lower numbers last year but with increase in average size. Something to do with alewives etc but I don’t remember all the specifics. Maybe this year will be a replay of that! We hope to catch our first salmon on the fly this year! 👊💪

Salmon are one of the hardest fish to get to bite consistently because there digestive system shuts down in freshwater, it's tricky !
This is oddly satisfying to watch. Question: do people who centerpin usually fish slower runs and big pools? I’m wondering how well they’d do in faster larger western rivers for trout?
Centerpinning is a pretty versatile way to present a bait, you can fish slow water or fast water depending on how you set up your rig

There will always be haters. Learned a great deal about centerpin from your videos. Just curious if you still do any fly fishing for salmon during the season? Great job. Our run down south will.be few weeks behind. Maybe in 1 to 2 years we will come test out the mi run. We catch plenty every season but would love to fish with you some day. I picked up 2 center pin rods to test out but one seems to light and one seems to heavy. Still learning about centerpin. We do strictly fly fishing only each season. Great job and stay clear of the haters.

I wish I could help you but I'm not much of an authority on fly fishing. Probably want an 8wt at minimum if there are king salmon where you fish though
I’ve never fished for salmon I’m more of a panfisherman I guess you could say but you can’t beat that CONSISTENT RUSH when any bobber goes down hahaha 😊

Our kings in Mi. Start running around mid to late August usually. And really start heating up around Labor Day and run through October. Good luck out there.

I went two days ago to tippy it was my first time there seen one fish caught in a couple hours but a lot jumping still a little early maybe ?
That salmon wasn't that dark, but the meat was a light color. The meat of salmon in Oregon have a lot redder color. The fall chinook meat does lose its color as they get darker though. You have a much greater advantage because there are more fish in Michigan than Oregon.

I’m not him, but I can tell you a lot of guys run this rig in a spin rod, since it’s not your typical fly rig either
You can use a spinner and a bobber
If you watch close at 4:42 you can see the fish move for towards the float
You think steelhead skein will work for Kings? I’ve got a bunch of steel skein cured up with Fire Cure that I’m hoping will work this year
