Sorry for the second comment, but I think the costumes from Back To The Future 3 are surprisingly good for the 20th century. Clara's 1885 dress has the right shape and bustle, her hat and hair is about right, and I can only think of one mistake in the dance scene. But what really impresses me is that when she and Doc come back after they've had kids, she's wearing an 1890s dress to show that time has passed! And the dress is perfect as far as I can tell: right sleeves, right skirt, right trim... they even have the 90s pleat at the back if you look close! I hear the costume designer replicated real patterns of the era, so it's really impressive in a time where fashion history wasn't available like now. Can't speak for the 50s clothes, but the silhouette looks right to me.
You could also do t.v. "send ups" of historical dress ! I LOVED when Carol Burnett did "Gone with the wind" scene with the 'dress made out of drapes' which had me laughing as a kid & I STILL find funny. If I remember correctly, Bob Mackie did the women's clothes on the Carol Burnett show ?! She always looked AMAZING. It might be interesting to do small "bios" of costume designers & the shows they did - be it theater, movie, t.v. or -nowadays- streaming services !?

I really love the costumes in Death on the Nile (1978)...not only is it a star-studded cast, but also has AMAZING costuming fitting every characters personality!
I wrote about Prince Albert's portraits for my honours thesis and they nailed his costume at the end (field marshal uniform). He's painted wearing it in the 1842 portrait by Winterhalter. They even got the hair right. Chef's kiss 👌
@@LadyRebeccaFashions I don't watch it all the time but it exists on my list. I can let go of the fact they didn't get together in the end because her acting is so incredible. Her crying at the end is one of the most accurate portrayals I have ever seen, at least for me and the way I cry.

Yeah, I'm with blktauna on this. She has a couple of absolutely iconic outfits, but they're not very historically accurate, and less so than some of the other musicals of that era.
I would love to see a video on mini-series!!! To that end I would recommend Against the Wind, an Australian miniseries from the late 70's, however, I don't think it is available in the US. The costumes were not fine, as the primary characters were transported convicts, but they seemed very accurate, as best I can remember. Also, another movie which had lovely costumes was The Slipper and the Rose (another Cinderella story), also from the 70's.
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day is a perfect movie and the costumes are just beautiful. Also, I saw an exhibition of Manolo Blahnik's shoes at the Wallace Collection in London, including a bunch of the shoes for Marie Antoinette-it was amazing to see them up close!
For Amadeus, watch not for the costumes or the history, but the very accurate historic stagecraft as they take us back stage during The Magic Flute. Rewatching after writing papers on stagecraft and historic theater business when I was in college was the best thing cause I got to see the things I read about. I would love to see another historical costume movie ranking video - It's interesting to hear about the movies through the eye of a professional actor and historical costume maker!
I was one who voted for Titanic 💖 the movie that got me hooked on period dramas. I actually wore Rose's jumping dress while meeting Rupert Friend (who played Albert in the young victoria!) and he had no idea who I was 😂
Hi , my favorite period movie and tv series are Anne of Green Gables (1985 &1987) and Road to Avonlea by Kevin Sullivan. Road to Avonlea starts in the late Victorian era goes into Edwardian era and 19teens. It was a fun series to watch growing up.
Good one Rebecca. Good ideas. I am a Windie (obsessed with GWTW since I was a little girl, cosplay and collect memorabilia). So I'm partial to GWTW for sure. I have an endless trove of knowledge about the costumes. And fun fact, one of the only remaining original costumes from the film, just went up for auction and was sold last week! I know GWTW is not for everyone, but for the film aspects, it's always number one for me. And yes, it is long haha! I have to take many more potty breaks as I get older LOL. Thanks for giving it a chance and not writing it off. Agree, it definitely has its issues, but from a film and costume perspective, can still be enjoyed. Some really good costume movies, in my opinion, not always historically accurate, but hey, I still love the costumes: Firelight 1997, Dangerous Liaisons 1988, Howard's End 1992, The Wings of the Dove 1997, A Room With A View 1985, Anna Karenina 1997, The Age Of Innocence 1993 aww I love it and the novel, Barry Lyndon 1975, Amadeus 1984,. I'm a classic film buff, so I could go on and on about some really great classic film historically costumed films. Also, there are some good Westerns with well done costumes, as that genre was not represented here. That genre tends to lean "male" costume, but many also have good "female" costumes too.
For me one that is enjoyable that treads between period and period fantasy is The Fall by Tarsem Singh with costumes from the late Eiko Ishioka, very similar vibe as a Little Princes weirdly enough lol. P.s Lee pace stars in it too.
Very interesting. I enjoy learning which movies have the accuracy to the period of the times presented. Thanks for all the research you do & experience of knowing. Interested in the accuracy of those that were voted on. And yes, I would very much enjoy knowing about costumes from TVshows/series. Thank you, Rebecca. 😊
while i can't tell the costumes' accuracy as well as others, one of my (recently acquired) comfort movies is 1995 persuasion i just like the vibes but i also reall liked that pride and prejudice mini series - i only just recently watched those and really enjoyed them.
Bright Star, La Reine Margot, Orlando [1991], Jane Eyre [2011], and Tulip Fever are full of wonderful costumes. If you didn't yet, I would encourage you to watch all of them! 😊
@@LadyRebeccaFashions About La Reine Margot's costumes, I can't assure about the historical accuracy (it's a dramatisation of a Dumas novel), but they sure are remarkable. 🥰
Huzzah for the honorable mention for Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day! That movie is such an over looked delight! I am not surprised 2004 Vanity Fair was not mentioned as it isn’t everyone’s favorite but it does have some rather nice costumes and I think that Reese Witherspoon does a fantastic job as Becky Sharpe! While it is primarily for children I rather like the Felicity: An American Girl Adventure (honestly any of the movies did an exceptional job for being directed for children. As for my favorite for just the costumes alone Marie Antoinette of 2005 is wonderful for costumes 10/10 agree but watching it is a bit stifling. I also agree that Gone with the Wind has absolutely amazing costumes for how early in film and when you look at the contemporary “historical” films that were made around it. That being said the story is very much worthy of being scrutinized for what it tells. I watch it only for the flouncy dresses and to appreciate Vivian Leigh giving it her all. (Starlets of her time were really under appreciated) it doesn’t excuse the subject matter but I do enjoy a very well put together costume design that is cohesive and fitting with the setting. But as Dandy Wellington says “Vintage style, not vintage values!”
I actually really enjoy that version of Vanity Fair, or at least, more than any other version, and the costumes are lovely, esp for Regency. But it's still not one of my favorites. (Unlike Miss Pettigrew!)
Mine didn't make the list, though I understand why. It's not exactly historically accurate, but in a way that is intentional enough to me that I forgive it. Bram Stoker's Dracula, costumed by the great Eiko Ishioka. It also has something to do with seeing this in the theater when I was 14 I'm sure, but it has some of my very favorite historical costumes.
One of the period-ish movies that I enjoy is "pride and prejudice and zombies." While the additions to the story make it definitely deviates from the source material, a lot of the clothes are really nice 🙂.
My own absolute number one favorite is the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice. Because, Colin Firth. EDIT. OH, I guess this will be under the miniseries category. Good. Now I can stop being huffy. lol I swooned over Ingrid Bergman's dressing gown in Hitchcock's Under Capricorn.
Thank you for the trouble you took over this video. That was a lot of work. My favourite costume movie has to be 2020's Emma, because it's the first movie I've seen in my long life where I wanted to actually make the clothes. The embroidery! Bill Nye's coats caught my husband's eye also. I want to ask, what is is about actresses and their skirts? Why are they always pulling them up? Are they not comfortable or knowledgeable about how to wear them? I was a young woman in the '70's when maxi dresses were very popular and no one hiked up their dresses. I'm not sure that women of the past were always pulling them up. If you are carrying something (a child?) you have no free hands. Maybe someone here can enlighten me. Thanks again and I would appreciate more videos of this type. I now have to go watch some movies.
Yeah, I think it's that most women nowadays just don't know how to handle long skirts, and unfortunately the director/production team doesn't train or correct them!
I liked the inclusion of the Musketeers. I hate the story of Emma so not even the costuming could save it I look forward to seeing you recreate Rose's other Titanic costumes
Do yourself a favor and try to see Forever Amber. Restoration deliciousness. Capt. Blood, Robin Hood (not the merry men but everyone else is magnificent), Alastair Sim's Christmas Carol, The Private lives of Elizabeth and Essex (bodices need work but Errol Flynn in those clothes, yum), Branaugh's Henry V, Olivier's Henry V, The 3 and 4 Musketeers with Michael York (flawless), Great Expectations (1946), Cromwell(1970), ... I know you're a victorian gal so I wanted to suggest some for the earlier periods.
I was really glad you mentionned Stage Beauty ; it's, like you said, a very underrated gem, both for the story, the acting AND the costumes. On the other hand, I was surprised to see that both 1988's Dangerous Liaisons and 1975 Barry Lyndon were not on your list, even just for the costuming part !
I've never seen Barry Lyndon, so I'll have to check that one out, and maybe I'll give Dangerous liaisons another try as well. It just didn't stick with me the last time I saw it. (Unlike Stage Beauty, which I could watch over and over. Seriously some of the best film acting I think I've seen. The Othello scene in the end? 😱)
@@LadyRebeccaFashions Yes, the Othello scene is something nearly hypnotic, and so powerful, you can't watch that and don't be overwhelmed. Concerning Dangerous Liaisons, I actually watched and re-watched this movie ONLY because of the costumes, and it's the same for Barry Lyndon, because it has the most gorgeous and historicallu accurate (at least as far as I can tell) last-quarter-of-the 18th century costumes I ever seen.
Oh ! I forgot to mention Coppola's Dracula from 1992 ! Though not always historically accurate (as it is a deliberate decision, it's okay for me) the costumes made by Eiko Ishioka are both stunning and absolutely gorgeous. Between the second-bustle-period dresses of both Mina and Lucy to the byzanthian influences of Dracula's Klimt-inspired robe, or Lucy somptuous wedding dress, it's a absolute feast for the eyes.
Thank you for all the film tips. Yes, I would love to see a video about the best TV costume series. 😃 I don't know if it counts, but I will mention Muppets Christmas Carol. Nicole Rudolph made Gonzo's outfit from that film. Apparently the clothing for the Muppets are very period accurate. Edit: scrolling through the comments, lots of others are saying Muppets Christmas Carol too. That makes me so happy. 😊 I thought I was the only one.
rebecca, i don't know If you ever saw The House of myrth, by edith wharton, starring Gillian Anderson and Laura Linney. Great costumes of the very early edwardian period. only reason I watch it.
I love Stage Beauty, it's one of my favorite movies of all time. Another favourite is Jezebel, it's black and white, but the outfits are gorgeous and essential to the story, that it's in any case great and Bette Davis performance is magnificent.
Thank you for including Meet Me In St. Louis, my favorite Judy Garland film. The outfits that comes to mind for me are Esther's striking blue and white tennis ensemble she wears early in the film, the deep red gown she wears to the holiday ball, and all those lovely dresses the female cast wear to the World's Fair.
watching this video and i thought "she's gonna list Titanic on this somewhere" did not disappoint :D also, quite a few of these movies--both on your list and the fan list--are good movies for both aesthetic and costumes, with a few having good plot as well :)
also, a movie with good costumes was Bram Stoker's Dracula (i believe it was made before Winona Rider did Age of Innocence--this movie was good, but i liked the book more). while the book would put me to sleep, i really enjoy the movie! Interview with a Vampire from the 90s had some good costumes for each time period as well. i'm sure i have more floating around my head, but those are the ones that pop for me right now :)
"While the story is extremely problematic, some of the costumes so far really are beautiful." ...Dammit you're right. (That was an ironic one-and-done hate watch for me, but I'm ashamed to say I watched it again just to take note of so many of the the costumes' designs. I'm glad I'm actually not the only one.)
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day = the ultimate comfort movie! And The Slipper and the Rose (1976's musical adaption of Cinderella, with music by The Sherman Brothers [Marry Poppins]) is easily one of my favorite 18th century costume movies. The costumes have no right being as good as they are! They're seriously some of the best 18th century costumes I've ever seen, which is so rare to say from period films of that period! Sadly, the majority of the costumes ended up spread through UK community theaters where they have spent nearly half a century suffering wear and tear. They sometimes show up in costume sales, though; I juuuust missed out buying two of them from Etsy back in 2017 for $60 each!
I have The Slipper and the Rose on DVD. I discovered it in highschool through it's soundtrack. I adore this version of Cinderella over all the others. It's exquisite.
@@margarethall1625 That's wonderful! My mom was a high schooler when it came out and she loves it (and Richard Chamberlain specifically, lol) so I was raised on it and have *such* a fondness for it. It's so dreamy and beautiful, and every time I watch it I find myself humming the music for days and days afterwards.
Not exactly a film as it was originally a mini series but Scarlett, (the sequel to Gone with the Wind) with Johanna Whalley and Sean Bean, is one of my favorites on all counts, and another which I find extremely visually scrumptious, both costume and background details, as well as very good on all counts, is Ekaterina, about Russia's Empress Catherine the Great. It has subtitles, but is so beautiful, it doesn't detract at all). It's available on Amazon, and also on dvd. I think it is 3, if not 4 seasons long. I enjoyed it so much after watching it on Amazon, I had to buy all the dvds, mainly for the visual feast. Also near top of my favorites is Cherie, with Michelle Phieffer.
We have much different taste, but this was fun. I love horror films and rewatch Crimson Peak all the time. And Dangerous Liaisons and Age of Innocence are two of my favorite films.
Nearly all of the my favorites were mentioned in this video! They include Marie Antoinette, The Duchess, Meet Me in St. Louis, Gone With the Wind, Little Women (1994 version), and Titanic. I also really love the 1949 and 2017 BBC/PBS versions of Little Women, the American Girl Samantha and Felicity films, Belle (the movie about Dido Elizabeth Belle), In the Good Old Summertime, Mary Poppins, Summer Magic, My Fair Lady, and the 1975 and 2018 miniseries versions of Picnic at Hanging Rock.
I never get the hype around 2005 Pride and Prejudices costumes. They're kind of ugly to me haha. I really like the costumes in both film versions of Emma. Marie Antionette is a favorite of mine and got me interested in historical clothing at a young age. Same with the Duchess!
Only one of my favorite period costume movies was one that you mentioned (Gone With the Wind) my other favorite one is the sequel to Gone With the Wind which is Scarlett. My other favorite movies that have costumes are more modern movies like Grease, Dirty Dancing, and Burlesque.
Two favorite TV show costumes are Dancing on the Edge (set in 1934, gorgeous costumes and so period accurate!) and A Discovery of Witches S2 (set in 1591, also super accurate apart from the leading men's costumes for some reason).
So glad you recommended Love and Friendship. That movie is so funny, and seems like no one knows of it. I'll have to check out the 2 you recommended that I didn't know!
To this list, I have to add North and South (the one starring Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe). The costumes are understated (her family is poor) but absolutely lovely. And it's got such a wonderful story!
I love your makeup and hair today. I love it every video but today you are especially beautiful - as you always are inside and out. Inside of course is always the important one but I thought I would comment today that you look particularly beautiful outside too.
Stage Beauty is an amazing film, gorgeous-looking and also very funny! I think it got snowed-under by the rather similar-topiced "Shakespear in love" Which isn't quite so good but got a a lot of media attention. I did not know there was a new film of "A little princess", which is one of my favourite books (and have never seen done well in film, mostly script-wise). I am surprised they put the girls in uniform as one of key things in the book, which is very upper class/lower class versus being good/behaving badly, is the gorgeous clothes Sara wears because she is so very rich, and which get taken away when she looses her fortune and then looks even poorer than the scullery maid.
Yeah, I definitely agree that Stage Beauty is the better of those two films! Sara comes to the school in fine clothes, and with lots of toys etc, and they all get taken away when she's forced to become a servant. It's such a good version - I highly recommend watching it, and it's currently available on Netflix, I believe.
I just looked at the French costume designer: Pierre-Yves Gayraud (3 Muskateers -2010) that you mentioned. My favorite is his Beauty & The Beast (2017) aka "La Belle et la Bete".(It is my favorite version of BatB) But any of his costume dramas are spectacular. (I checked his FILMOGRAPHY). Also, Barry Lyndon -1975. Costumes by Milena Canonero & Ulla-Britt Soderlund.(Costumes are purportedly reused for Marie Antoinette-2007. Hard to beat anything Milena Canonero creates.) Slipper & the Rose- 1976. Dreamy confections by Julie Harris. Honorable mention to: Anthony Powell /Rosemary Harris for 101 Dalmatians- 1996 for use of black, white and red color palette linitations.
I haven't seen a lot of these movies. I definitely need to check out Young Victoria. I'm glad people voted for Crimson Peak and Ever After, as I adore both of those movies. My favorite movies of all time are the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but they definitely wouldn't count for historical. Granted every dress Eowyn and Arrowyn wear i sigh over, they are just so beautiful.
I am just glad to see The Young Victoria get some love. I adore the costuming in this movie and I love the movie. It's actually the movie I fall asleep to every night. Many of the movies mentioned would also be on my list of favorites, including many of the regency movies you found the costumes to be boring. There was a couple movies that I am a little surprised to not get even a mention and that is The Favorite and the newer version of Jane Eyre. I found both of these movies to have interesting costumes, but I also am biased in that I think they are simply interesting movies.
There is one film, but I don't know if you can stream it out of Germany. It's a german Produktion "Oktoberfest 1900" the costumes are gorgeous! Lovely made I think, but I'm baby costumer! 😂 And not a professional. But if you have the chance to watch, please do it! 💞
Is that the TV mini series from a couple of years ago? If so, it looks like it's actually on Netflix, and there's even an English dubbed version. I'll have to check it out.

Thanks! There's a few from your list that I hadn't heard of, so I'll have to check them out!
For me one that is enjoyable that treads between period and period fantasy is The Fall by Tarsem Singh with costumes from the late Eiko Ishioka, very similar vibe as a Little Princes weirdly enough lol. P.s Lee pace stars in it too.
Bright Star (2009) -- perfect middle class regency era costuming. Wonderful acting. Heartbreaking story when you need a good cry.
I think I've seen them all except La Reine Margot, and they do all have wonderful costumes.
Oh and Amadeus is one of my all-time favorite films, though not in particular for the costumes. But they're very nice all the same.
It's funny - if I had held the poll on TH-cam instead of Instagram, both Dracula and the Muppet's Christmas Carol would definitely have made the list.
One of the period-ish movies that I enjoy is "pride and prejudice and zombies." While the additions to the story make it definitely deviates from the source material, a lot of the clothes are really nice 🙂.
Lady Chatterley's Lover has great costumes. The version with Richard Madden and Holliday Grainger!
My own absolute number one favorite is the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice. Because, Colin Firth. EDIT. OH, I guess this will be under the miniseries category. Good. Now I can stop being huffy. lol
I swooned over Ingrid Bergman's dressing gown in Hitchcock's Under Capricorn.
Colin ! Colin ! ♥️👍
Colin Firth in regency drooooooool
I'm surprised Shakespeare in Love didn't make the list.
I was surprised too! It has beautiful costumes, though definitely isn't one of my favorite movies.
The Million Pound Note starring Gregory Peck is one of my faves! It has a similar story line to Trading Places from the 1980's, still very enjoyable.
I hate the story of Emma so not even the costuming could save it
I look forward to seeing you recreate Rose's other Titanic costumes
Wow, I don't think I've seen any of those! I'll have to check them out!
I love Barry Lyndon too! The costumes. The amazing zero stage lighting. The weirdness. I love it!
I'm not sure if I've seen that one, but I think a couple other people voted for it too. I'll have to check it out!
Young Victoria is streaming free on Amazon prime in the UK right now
Ooh, good to know! You have to pay for it over here.
watching this video and i thought "she's gonna list Titanic on this somewhere"
did not disappoint :D
also, quite a few of these movies--both on your list and the fan list--are good movies for both aesthetic and costumes, with a few having good plot as well :)
also, a movie with good costumes was Bram Stoker's Dracula (i believe it was made before Winona Rider did Age of Innocence--this movie was good, but i liked the book more). while the book would put me to sleep, i really enjoy the movie! Interview with a Vampire from the 90s had some good costumes for each time period as well.
i'm sure i have more floating around my head, but those are the ones that pop for me right now :)
"While the story is extremely problematic, some of the costumes so far really are beautiful."
...Dammit you're right.
I also love that film :)
Wonderful movie. I still cry every time. Also available streaming a bunch of places right now, including TH-cam, if anyone wants to check it out.
Love this film to bits! Supurb Rococo fashions!
The costuming for Crimson Peak was just gorgeous!
I love the movies you used in this- movies that are on MY list but never seen on others lists.
Which ones are your favorites?
Honestly 2005 Pride and Prejudice is my fav 100% because of the way the story is told and has nothing to do with the costumes lol
That's fair. I love the cinematography in that movie.
(2011) Jane Eyre, (1998) Elizabeth, (2006) Miss Potter, (1954) 7 Brides for 7 Brothers (this may be too recent of an era, but it's a fun movie)
I was so on the fence about including 7 brides. I love the costumes, but not really for their "historicalness."
@@LadyRebeccaFashions my favourite is her patchwork quilt dress
@@eeyore_chick6059 mine too!
I would love to see you do a favorite costume TV shows!
Belle almost made the list! It just needed a couple more votes. I enjoy that movie too.
Just found your channel, fun and informative! Yes, for me The Young Victoria ticks all the boxes, story, acting and costumes.
Random, but I have a jumper-dress cut out of that same snowflake fabric right now waiting to be sewn before Christmas parties 😅😊
I never get the hype around 2005 Pride and Prejudices costumes. They're kind of ugly to me haha. I really like the costumes in both film versions of Emma. Marie Antionette is a favorite of mine and got me interested in historical clothing at a young age. Same with the Duchess!
I did absolutely LOVE the 2020 Emma. Fabulous in every way.
Muppet Christmas Carol. See Abby Cox's video about it for an explanation.
Crimson Peak is marvelous for so many reasons! Mind you, I'm a huge (psychological/supernatural) horror fan :)
Only one of my favorite period costume movies was one that you mentioned (Gone With the Wind) my other favorite one is the sequel to Gone With the Wind which is Scarlett. My other favorite movies that have costumes are more modern movies like Grease, Dirty Dancing, and Burlesque.
I know nothing about sewing or designing but your channel is wonderful!!!!!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I love ya!!
Thank you!
Two favorite TV show costumes are Dancing on the Edge (set in 1934, gorgeous costumes and so period accurate!) and A Discovery of Witches S2 (set in 1591, also super accurate apart from the leading men's costumes for some reason).
I haven't seen a lot of movies, so seeing these clips was fun!
Loved young Victoria! And the Little Princess ❤
So glad you recommended Love and Friendship. That movie is so funny, and seems like no one knows of it. I'll have to check out the 2 you recommended that I didn't know!
The chosen! I did NOT like the movie but the costuming and set design was to DIE for!
Muppets' Christmas Carol always and forever my favorite historical costume movie.
To this list, I have to add North and South (the one starring Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe). The costumes are understated (her family is poor) but absolutely lovely. And it's got such a wonderful story!
This made me want to watch meet me in at Louis! Really all of them but Titanic. I have never seen titanic.
I definitely recommend giving Titanic a try!
I'd watch the TV/Miniseries version!
I love your makeup and hair today. I love it every video but today you are especially beautiful - as you always are inside and out. Inside of course is always the important one but I thought I would comment today that you look particularly beautiful outside too.
Aww, thank you so much! ❤️
Hard to beat anything Milena Canonero creates.)
Slipper & the Rose- 1976. Dreamy confections by Julie Harris.
Honorable mention to: Anthony Powell /Rosemary Harris for 101 Dalmatians- 1996 for use of black, white and red color palette linitations.
I love Emma 2020. It was the last movie I saw in the theaters before Covid hit, which is a great one to end your movie going on.
Yep, it was the last movie I saw pre-pandemic as well!
Elizabeth R has great costumes!
And the old six wives ofhenry the 8th
Young Victoria is an excellent choice for #1
I haven't seen a lot of these movies.
Titanic is my favorite movie
Jane Eyre 2011 owns my soul
No love for Eiko Ishioka’s Oscar-winning costumes for Dracula (1992)?
It had some votes, but not enough to make it to the top of the list. I've personally never seen it.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions you’d love Winona’s 1880s setup
