    Been a pro web designer for 22 yrs, but this is a great wake-up call. Thank you. There’s always so many things that we just do without charging for. Makes me sick really, when I think of how much $ I’ve left on the table.

      We've all been there. When I look back now on how many sites we did for low costs and services that we gave for free, it makes your gut churn, because it's a lot of potential value.

      Similar boat but on the systems architecture / maint / troubleshooting / networking / cloud/ general consulting side. I can't code, but I'm working in changing that 😂.
      I think my official job title is Systems Engineer, failing that, Solutions Engineer. Anyway.
      I've made the same mistake man.. On the bright side, we saw the light sooner than later... We have a duty to share that info. Don't beat yourself up about it / don't try get a semi accurate idea of how much was left per deal/quarter/y..
      It's material, and it was simply due to not having X experiance / knowledge. You've probably broke even on whatever losses there were, without even knowing about it :)
      Rather focus that energy on being mindful of thinking and stick to your Check List + update it weekly / as you work on a project.
      I helped a friend increase his labour rates by about 30% , with 2-3wks notice to his clients. (IT consulting/support/maint/network design/etc).
      He was simply charging too little for the quality of his work. None of his clients left,
      I've become mindful of it. I also charge 50% of the 1y savings & 25% of the 2nd year. I might do 50 and 50 due to increased overall risk on my part..
      This is semi passive income to a degree, but it lets them know you have faith in your work, and will be around to get that 2nd paycheck in 2y time. It's not perfect, but what is... 2I can save a client on X business grade product. 5y back I saw I could move a brand new client to their own hosting (volume) plan and
      aswell as making paper notes as I work on a project (using the updated notes from the previous project)

    Great to hear someone being honest with the actual costs of building a website.
    A great video to refer clients to after they have been resuscitated from reading your quotation. 🙂

    @brettalan11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is an interesting way to get the point across to your clients. I'm in the beginning phases of my business so I'm taking cheaper jobs with smaller 1-person companies, so ideally charging a lot does not work for me, but I'm at a point where I want to start raising my prices. So, because of that, I can see how this type of model can work so that I can be more transparent that my time is valuable. I already dealt with one client who took advantage of me, and I did some of it to an extent to be nice. I'm not going to be so nice moving forward, so this type of model will work better for my situation.

    Very comprehensive Imran, I agree with most of what you say, but in my experience, it always takes a lot more time than I had anticipated, I especially related to your explanation of the Google pin number episodes, which is 99% of the time the exact scenario. I especially find I'm having trouble with bigger projects, where I have huge websites to cost. Lately I made a website with membership, import of a big database, making the CPT for displaying this info (I made custom design, all dynamic with ACF), research in that database with filters, an online shop, a custom dynamic timeline with animation, website ended up having 56 custom pages and templates, popups for contact forms, 18 categories, import of members, tutorials for the members of the organisation... etc. Just the communications folder contained hundreds of pages! I ended up spending 3 months working on this website full time, and lost a LOT of money, but the project was really fun for me to do, and I would love to know how others cost such projects, and how the go about coordinating all of that.

    • @websquadron
      @websquadron  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A good point.
      I do try to factor in extra time or I make clear how much time the website should take and if that time extends due to their content etc or issues then the cost may go up.

    As a professional Web Developer, you still need to consider some things: you are 2 people that need to earn and feed their families because it's not a (freelancer side / I'm a student job). Then in Germany, for example, you need to pay your insurance, taxes, taxes on profit, pre taxes xD So all that money still needs to be deducted from your cost calculation if you were in Germany doing this as a professional. Then maybe some Plugins where you pay a monthly or yearly fee. Your Software, your Hardware, electricity... are you renting a Workspace, or are you at home. So many things to consider. If you think about my industry.... even if we are running on high occupancy in our Restaurant, you never go out with more than 10% profit... not even... because staff, F&B Cost and all other thins a quiet high.... that's why we can not charge the main course under 30 Euro anymore. It does not work.

    • @websquadron
      @websquadron  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed, you have to account for the Taxes.
      We have the client pay for their own licenses, so there is no obligation for us to maintain them.
      Geography, working methods/lifestyle/overheads all play a part.

    in my opinion, £120 for an hour of expert knowledge is good value because everything they learn from that hour they get to keep and reuse for years to come. as you said, the window cleaner charges £20 to £30 for a basic house (£80 to £120 per hour if they do 4 houses per hour) and it’s the same again every month!

    I also show clients screenshots of my recent work in GTMetrix, Google page speed, and a few others and compare it to theirs + any well known competitors that may come up in Google etc.
    Proof is in the pudding. Yes I won't be the cheapest, or fastest, but in 1-4 weeks your site will fly, and you can do you own tests to see the results.
    I recently optimised a clients WP site and the website project managers words were "Wow, the site is lightening fast" and I could show them real world live tests so they can visualise where site is now loading faster.

    I'm only 3 minutes in, but do other devs in this community think that $6,000 for that scope is too LITTLE?
    Realisitically, how much time would that build take you? I'm in the middle of a similar project and should have charged $15,000 minimum.
    Obviously not all projects and clients are the same, but I don't see how $6,000 is enough for something like this.
    No judgement, just want to see everyone get paid what they're worth. We all provide a premium service.

      Those figures are a little heavier than what we charge, but our overheads are lower.
      We quote on a paid for time basis of 200 AUD (110.00 GBP) per hour.
      BTW, Charging these rates, have as much work as we care to take on.

    • @markjszymanski
      @markjszymanski ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@barryscottormoc Totally understand that. A bit of pushback I would give is that it's always easier to bring the price down (if needed) than to increase it. And, in general, if you're dealing with clients in geo areas that can afford it (ie. US, GB, AUS, etc.), I feel you should charge as much as you can. Just my perspective from having undercharged for the past 3 years.

It would be interesting to see a video on how you approach keywords research for a new site with no domain authority. Thanks for this. I do some things similarly, some things a bit different.
    One question, I assume you have some form of automation involved with your process?
    For instance say a WP setup. I have a custom bash script (a blueprint) that installs all software and sets up all the basic tweaks of wp. Then j have ready to go mu-plugins that do the wp cleanup and hardening, etc. All in all this makes my wp setup take, what, 3 minutes?
    However, I have invested my time to streamline this process. How would you approach charging this process in such case?

    • @websquadron
      @websquadron  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have out set price and the analogy I'll make is that some Engineers would charge a full hour just for turning on a switch. Even with a blueprint, and extra time to muddle through other plugins and settings, PS that time can include adding images, cropping, scaling etc. and future proofs for any unforeseen costs too.
      It saves me giving away time for free.

  • @raptorcreate

    kind of off topic i think, but when i started out i reached out to a client, built the website, a basic site only to find that the client went in to remove my branding, which was there because it was a free offer! then then the client goes and designs a site in xd, asks me to build it, for free! so i do that, one of my first clients. long story short, i make one of the very best websites in the niche, for free (client pays hosting) and i have gotten 0 >> zero refferals for my amazing work!!! client is making loads of money now! i gues their laughing all the way to the bank! i'm not, the ltd i offered has cost me. i did however gain valuable experience, i am happy with that, my only real grape is that i got no additional work, despite building a quality site (not so quality now as i'm not getting paid to update it). love to get feedback on this.
