The thing is that most people misunderstood websites, they think it's a wall with clickable pictures... And no, that's a making money tool, a marketing pitch! Big clients know that, that's why they look for Ux design. Web designers have to align themselves and start thinking of themselves as people who grown business instead of creating buttons.
Could you make a video where you showcase a 10k website? Show the scope of such a project, the business value it creates, the problems it fixes and also deep dive into the technical aspects like how its built? Just a request, would be cool to see in order to understand just what it takes.
This exact video demonstrates exactly why I've been moving away from upwork as a tool to encounter clients. They want a website more often than not when I want to build a business tool.
Exacly! This video is just on point! A few days ago I sold a website for 800€ without any work done before to show or testimonials. I called the client, sat down to talk and we talked for like 2 hours about his business how he wants it to be in the feature and how my solution will help him achieve his goals. Boom!

I would argue you he is saying don't even mention aesthetics, form, and function. Rather focus on what this website will do for the client. How their business will grow, or save them money, etc.
I actually enjoy what this man has to say. It’s relevant to what I’m interested in. Furthermore, I can tell he has speaking from experience. Keep up the good work !
Great video. The more I watch your videos the more I realize it's all about how my (limiting) mindset got me stuck in the lower priced website category instead of the higher one. Thanks for this insight!
When I graduated from design school my degree was call Visual Communications. Design can be simple or complex, but it's what you are communicating that is important.
Amazing explanation! Altough i think that these people offering cheap web design are damaging the industry and making it harder for us to close a sale.
Don't worry about it. True business owners know the value of getting what they pay for. The people who buy these websites and make their own using something like Wix were never going to be your clients. The only way they would be is if someone like yourself educates them while pitching, but even then...
Aedum covered it great above ^ - these people who never buy from you and there will always be "the cheapest" options in every niche. A top restaurant isn't going to worry about McDonalds or Burger King.
Thanks for sharing ☺️. In my opinion it's, Websites vs Web Applications. Costly could also means custom branding, good server, scalability, site security, integrations, or some custom functionality. A business could start cheap but they will soon realise cheap is not what differentiate them from their competitors and at some point they need to upgrade.
I love this, I had a bit of a taste of everything throughout my career, and at the start, I was discouraged because I studied to be a 3D animator and ended up in a sales job because I was simply not getting paid to be a 3D animator or to do the extensive hours at a peanut salary. At that time, I could get paid more to work an 8 - 5 job as a sales consultant without any education than I could with being a qualified 3D animator with work experience. But holy camoly! I can't even begin to explain how grateful I am right now for the place that it has led me to. I love figuring out problems, got into web design and development and then ended up starting my own business! Everything that I learned from being a sales consultant straight through to being an IT service coordinator has truly helped me develop solutions that help businesses grow instead of just having a fancy website that adds no value to a client's business. People always want to add fancy, none essential things to their site, which is okay, but the question is. Does it add value, or does it just look pretty?
Very insightful lesson. Could you do a video on what features I should be adding / learning so I can create 10k websites? I know there's stuff like SEO, but thats about all I know. You dont have to teach it all, but laying out which things there are will tell me what I should look up in google. Thanks for the great content. Your channel is great!
I know you asked this 2 years ago but for anyone stumbling on this video now. Its not about any specific features or seo or whatever. It’s about solving the clients problems. For example a business it’s get a ton of silly questions in their email or over the phone, on solution could be to put a FAQ section on the contact page. Or if a plumber wants to spend less time answering the phone and booking jobs you could make a fancy booking system that automatically adds an entry to the plumbers google calendar. So you are selling a solution instead of a website
@@erictheawesomest one thing to add to this. Regarding SEO. Yes its important, but why? You don't want to sell the fact that you do SEO(first), you want to sell the benefits of it. SEO is just the method you're using, but the client cares about the benefits first.
This is great. But what I'd like to see is a video of you designing a website that incorporates all these features that will benefit different businesses. I'm a new web designer, started my business in January, and what I care about is what my design can provide for a business. I want to see them thrive through what I offer, and not even because it would mean more money. I just want the pride that comes with knowing I've been instrumental in driving their business forward.
Thanks! I am working on a video like this atm - Ill try get it online as soon as possible. Thanks and glad the content is helping. Keep us posted on your progress.
Great and much needed perspective. I’d like to add that at $10k good design is expected and therefore not a priority item of discussion. Business objectives are the priority like he says. At this price point client will only notice design when it’s bad, but rarely will they applaud your great typography, use of white space and careful use of clever interactions. Those things are expected just like in their $100k limited edition automobile parked upfront. The client is trying to solve a $1M problem and this 10k website is an integral part of the overall strategy, as it takes care of the two lists mentioned here on the board.
idk if I agree with that. From what I've seen, there are many websites that are 10k plus that look "ugly" that have been built in the last ~5 years. There probably are clients that expect that to be a given, but I wouldn't generalize that.
Another gold video Rob. Great Job. Follow up question about this video, "how" and "where" do I find these $10,000 businesses and "how" to pitch them? Thanks
Very quick list (Ill try make a full video): - more new sales - better sales (more of the customers they want) - more frequent sales (more often people buy who already know them) - boost their credibility (easier to sell) - boost their authority (they are experts at the best at what they do) - show a lot of social proof (they are well liked and respected) - easier systems (selling, inquires, support, information, etc) - better messaging - building brand Just a couple - these are all overview too, for each biz it will be way more specific and personal.
@@FoxWebSchool Thanks. Looking forward to it. Would also be great if you could specifically describe what functions/features in a website achieves those specific stated objectives.

Cheap sites are often templates but there is nothing wrong with that. The problem is that is all they do so they create no results. Bigger (10k plus) sites can use templates too but the difference is they then put effort into making sure the content/strategy/messaging/sales is on point. I have used templates sites up to 20k and the clients had no issues with it (and knew this was the case).
Interesting. I posted the other day about a lot of websites looking similar these days between templates and drag and drop builders. This video and your sales page answer a lot of my questions about the market. I had already started looking into seo to branch out. Thanks
Hello Rob, Firstly thanks a million for your brilliant series on how to sell websites the right way. Thank you for putting the work in for us. I do however have a question that's burning me since a while now. How do you find and identify those clients who are looking for more than just a good looking website, who want an effective sales tool and are willing to invest a higher price into a higher value online sales and marketing tool? Where would we have to look for this type of client?
First make sure you are thinking this way yourself. This helps you stand out and business owners will spot you have this mindset very fast. Use communication (fb posts, emails, phone calls, conversations) that SHOW you think and work this way. Second go where others have already succeeded. Look for good niches and industries and specific problems where other people have paid well in the past. Third - once you do the first two points you will develop your own ability to spot areas with high potential and to have the right message to attract suitable people to you. Hope that helps.
Great vid as always Rob, agree that this bigger picture 'problem solver'/business improver approach will bring in the bigger clients than a 'web designer'. Hi! Thank you so much for this video. I have a quick question. Is it possible to charge a business owner who you are solving multiple problems (10k range) but you are using softwares like Word Press and Wix to create the website for clients? Or for the 10k range, it has to be a different software with coding included?
I would to avoid Wix with those types of prices - since it is marketed to business owners as a "do it yourself" solution. (So it makes you look unprofessional). Wordpress though - ya 100% that is fine, and there would be millions of top websites built on the wordpress platform.
Summary of the video: The cheap ("$100") web designs services just focus the website's look and often use a quick theme to make it. The expensive ("10000") websites offer more than just a look, they target bigger businesses, with larger needs, and help them get the tools (or leads) to grow.
I’m an aspiring web developer. Can anyone tell me whether or not selling just front end is viable? Or do companies these days expect web designers to implement all the function in the website too?
If you can help a business make money from the website, they'll pay you. You just need to communicate how each part of the site will bring in more revenue. It's an investment for businesses. For example, models want attention(money/sales/revenue). If you're a clothes designer(website designer) and you sell cool clothes for £100 to these models, the price is cheap because all they ask for is cool clothes. However if you can focus on what they want, attention, and explain how you use color psychology to achieve an effect from outsiders that makes you an attention magnet, you could sell that for £1000+. The value of a site is determined by your explanation and understanding of the businesses needs and how you will achieve them. If you can explain the ROI, you can charge higher.
So here's my question. I'm already sorry for any grammatic mistakes but I am learning to create what is trending nowadays like ithose you see when you go to websites like beehance and lapa.ninja. I've also tried using many calculators but they seem to calculate a very huge price like 25K$ which I honestly think is overselling my talent. How much should a person like me charge for such level of design also taking care of the user experience, accessibility, A/B testing and other factors? Would it be at the thousands level or hundreds?
Is there any chance that you could point me in the right direction of blue chip web design agencies please? I am needing a high end web sight built with high end functionality in the UK.
feels like this could've been cut down to half the time, most of it felt like hearing "what a website looks like vs what a website does for a business."
Would love if you can answer my question, I got scammed 2 days ago by web for 99 website, he created my website on wordpress and later changed all my admin info after getting paid, now I am at a lost because I contacted wordpress rep and they are telling it will cost me more than a thousand dollars to restore my site. What should I do? Is there another way? Awaits ur response
Rob: That's a 100 dollar website Wix: (Let's show him some ads!) Need a professional website? I created one for my startup using Wix. Me: Oh no.............
you are absolutely right on your every point. But imagine a situation. I am a freelance web designer from Bangladesh. I want to get a client. I am cold emailing companies with a solution to their problem with a budget of $10,000. Will those business owners give a shot to me? They will rather go to an Agency and say we have this this this problem and we need those solutions. And the agency will give them the solution with the 10k budget. What's my benefit here? Or what can I do here? Any idea?

feels like this could've been cut down to half the time, most of it felt like hearing "what a website looks like vs what a website does for a business."
good stuff
$100 website = selling a product. $10,000 website = selling a service/strategy.
So basically in simple terms, the pricing goes down to the income stream problem that the website will be able to solve
Great video!!!!
Many Many Thanks for sharing such an important Thing.

Sorry to hear, Tammy. Did he register your domain name (url) and web hosting?
Rob: That's a 100 dollar website
Wix: (Let's show him some ads!) Need a professional website? I created one for my startup using Wix.
Me: Oh no.............
😂😂😂
Idk how i ended up here and what im watching but hi
Thx bruh 🙏
Would you provide me website project
Hi Sir Sujeet Kumar this side form GTM Infotech Delhi India
The real point is that you are a business consultant more so than just a web designer. To you, the website is not the objective. Its just a tool.
them: how is it going to be designed?
me:html tags
I will developed as reliable price
you are absolutely right on your every point.
Any idea?
Im not a web designer so im not a expert, but you can shape your business like a agency quite easily. Show more benefits than just a good looking site
100$ website? No way... no one should ever do that!
i can't watch the video, because of the sound of that pen on paper
More like $500 website than $100
$100 is front end ...$10,000 is back end basically
Not really but hopefully in the last year you've learnt that
pretty much ahaha
Thanks you saved me 13 mins of my time
Definitely not. You don't need an elaborate backend for something like an FAQ (frees up time for the client) for example.
@@Mar10001 The video has nothing to do with backend vs frontend🤦🏾♂️
$100 😂😂😂hell naw my time is worth more than that
10 q
bro repeated himself for 13 minutes
Why are you wearing a hat indoors?? WTF.
