Yeah Scenario B is almost a copy-paste of A.That's something the original game did much better. Too bad because if they had made a Scenario B a story that happens simultaneously with A (AS IT SHOULD BE) and not a copy-paste of this and improved the zapping system, this game would've been the perfect remake for Re 2, but they hadn't so it's just good, but I still loved this remake so much.

While I don't necessarily agree with everything you said, I can respect the fact that you were very open to at least giving the game a chance and you were pretty fair on critiquing the game overall. I definitely agree on the music being a letdown, and the interaction between Claire and Leon was minimal at best. Funnily enough, I remember playing REmake a year or two after it came out for PC and I thought it was very well done, so well done that I was honestly considering holding off on playing Resident Evil 2 until the remake for that happens.
I eventually found a copy for the game on the PS1 for $20 and bought it and played it, I'm glad I did, because in all honesty the difference in tone and art direction between this and REmake 2 is night and day. I implore anyone to at least give the original a try and see how different it compares to it's REmake counterpart and decide for yourself.

Really should've mentioned that interview with Hirabayashi where he "really wanted to stress that composer working on this title is the composer of the original game, so even if it's 20 years later, this is very much his vision of what the audio should be for RE2".

    • @SaberRexZealot
      @SaberRexZealot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +73

Samaeru Kuro Wow really? That’s very surprising news. Personally I loved the way the new music was done. It kept the atmosphere in check and ramped up significantly for the more hype moments. I have more issues with its mixing and how drowned out it gets among other sounds. It’s the Blade Runner 2049 thing; the music is not as amazing as the original by itself (Vangelis compared to Zimmer) but it compliments the sequel perfectly.

    • @tobimisa
      @tobimisa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +114

that wouldn't really change nerrel's point that it isn't what _he_ liked about the original, especially when he already said that he was sure this was the kind of game they wanted to make.
his point wasn't that they'd failed in creating their vision, it was that the remake dropped elements from the original that, in his opinion, not only would have made the experience better but were essential in what made the original the experience that it was
it's a good game but it doesn't remake the atmosphere or tone in the way that nerrel wanted to, which is honestly something that happens a lot when it comes to remakes of this nature
when people have to compromise based on hardware limitations and end up making a game that's Weird in just the right way to find a dedicated audience often times taking those limitations away makes the vision behind the game less appealing, because it was precisely the results of the limitations that enchanted audience members
of course that isn't always the case but what it really comes down to is the creators being able to understand the appeal of their products
though that said, if this soundtrack truly was the original vision for the game, then I don't see why they couldn't have done it first time. it'd be far easier to replace the music files with ambient noise files compared to like, upping lighting effects past what was possible for the hardware

Sounds like a George Lucas syndrome.
It does not matter what things might've been meant to be at some point of history, when what we got instead is the highly acclaimed and beloved title everyone knows.
If this no-music + pseudo-dubstep BS was ever even considered (doubt it), then thank fucking god we avoided that bullet in the 90s and early 00s,

    • @Devixicus
      @Devixicus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

It sounds like the composer came back trying to do something contemporary and Hirabayashi was putting words in his mouth. If this was the original vision then that's what he would have done, it was very much possible to do this kind of sound back then.

That wasn't neat at all IMO. It was by far the weakest boss fight for me. First you had to wait for Birkin to finish finger fucking the ceiling, easily dodging his attacks while checking your watch. Then you had to run past him as he ripped the door open, clipping your respective player models into each other as you do so. THEN you have to run to the crane area in order to actually engage in the enemy.
Has anyone tried overpowering him with a rocket launcher as soon as he rips the door open? I've never tried it.
Disclaimer, I loved RE2R. I managed a 1:01 as Leon after like 20 tries and 1:25 as Claire after giving up on my 15th or so.

This was first RE game, so I really can't talk that much about how it good it is as a remake. But I liked how it didn't have that much of a soundtrack, the 3D noise and just overall silence made it tense and it captured me atmospherically. Though I don't think I would have hated if they added more presence to the original's or new soundtrack

I personally loved it. I thought of it as a reimagining, and capturing the essence of what made the original what it was and blending it very well with modern gaming aesthetics. I do agree about the lack of music, but I had no issues with Mr X. He added some nice suspense to the game and hearing him stomping around the RPD searching for you is a cool touch. I still love the original, but I treat them as two separate games. From the onset this was going for a more serious tone, and despite the 3rd person camera angles they still managed to provide a great survival horror experience.

Agreed, specially MR.X, sure he can get very annoying at times but it gets the job done on providing tension and
uncertainty for the player, something that the original one didn't do at all. OG Mr.X wasn't even scary or well designed, He didn't took much punishment to K.O and his AI was very bad, to the point leaving and re-entering the room he appeared in made him go away until his next scripted apperance In which you could do the same making him practically absent for the rest of the game. There's a reason why before the RE2 remake everyone remebered Nemesis and no one bothered with Mr.X

I agree with those 2 points partly each, the B scenarios werent very different to the A side and the lack of music was somewhat disappointing. However they werent entirely bad as i saw them being mainly introduced for your second playthrough of the game, so you play Claire A or Leon A and then move onto the other characters B side. Music though I think was well done but could have used a few more scores into the mix to bring the game to life like its older counterpart.

If I remeber correctly he does kind of ends up teleporting around due to him not really being able to walk normally in the not loaded parts of the map, so he does sorta end up being closer to you always even when he shouldn't be. They did try to make it like a realistic AI and perhaps one day when the entirety of the place will be able to be loaded this could be realized as intended, though I still think they did a good job on him :> he definitely was terrifying to me, made me run around like an idiot in the beggining just going nope nope stay away :'D

This is a balanced review, and highlights the misgivings I have about this remake. Graphics are great, zombies are excellently designed and a threat once again after their bizarre treatment in RE6, character models are very good, Birkin is wonderfully creepy and unpredictable, there's a lot that's good and it's no doubt more easy to play as OTS - and yet it lacks the magic of the original game. The cinematic style and perfectly-judged music made it special, and the impact of Mr X was much greater for being kept 'til later in the playthroughs. Another issue is that the game seems to keep borrowing bits from other games - puzzles from one RE, the engine from another, so to me it lacks identity. What made RE4 so phenomenal was its conviction in doing something that was then brand new, which games like RE2 Remake lack.

    1. I thought he was handled perfectly. I never found him threatening or scary in the OG, but rather an annoying ‘get hit once then run’ machine that made repeat playthroughs even more annoying, but now, he’s persistent and relentless, but also readable and avoidable. He makes your initial enemy-clearing meaningful and potentially deadly. He’s an enemy completely woven into player-choice and level design just as Crimsons were to REmake 1.

The original soundtrack really added to the ambience and that feeling of hopelessness imo. Silence can work well at times, but it gets old when that's 99% of the game. Hearing the familiar chimes in the remade save theme, or when you first enter the RPD was a nice touch, but as you said, they play for only a couple seconds, overall feeling like a waste.

Most people are just willing to throw perfect scores at it without mentioning things like the lack of enemy variety or how pointless the 4 scenarios feel this time around. @somaoni8806 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Well I’m sure the perfect scores aren’t for nothing. I don’t like the mainstream review outlets personally, I rely on smaller youtubers as more often than not they are a better critical look. I don’t like the last two scenario’s story wise, but gameplay wise I think it’s very good! The only complaints other than that are that the spiders were removed, Bowgun was removed, the story doesn’t make sense in a lot of parts, Ada’s “death” is the old one that didn’t make much sense. And while I don’t mind at all that the new music score is more atmospheric than anything, I don’t like how the save room theme almost never plays once you have your first/second save room unlocked for the first time. That’s one of the best parts about RE game’s. Even 7 did that!
If I had to give a rating though it’d be a 9.0-9.5. It has a couple smaller issues (besides the story bits) but I think it’s the best remake of a game ever made besides REmake 1.

It seems that people have really low standards because of RE being pure action for so long.
Personally, I am satsified with REmake 2, but it could have been so much more. And imo, REmake 2 cant hold a candle to REmake 1. Not because of the new camera or anything like that, but because the developers had to REMOVE stuff instead of fixing it. The spiders for example. I'm mildly arachnophobic, so I was REALLY looking forward to see how fucking creepy these things would look. Too bad they had to remove the spiders for whatever reason. The marshalling yard would be another example. Why remove one of the most iconic locations in the original game like that? Why not expand and improve it? You know, like REmake1 did. REmake 1 didn't have to remove anything. It kept everything from the original and made stuff even better.

Not only that but both scenarios in the original had purely exclusive bosses. REmake2 straight out has you repeat the same 3 Birkin fights.
I wish these people would hold it up to the standards as a game made over 20 years ago by a team half the new team's size with a smaller budget made in less then 2 years but they likely won't. They're just happy to pay more and settle for less.

Only things that make sense to me are A. people have been so desperate for RE2 in some form that they're blinded by hype, B. a bunch of fans that only ever cared about the shooting-focused titles wanna elevate THEIR version of RE2, or C. people really don't care any more for the finer qualities of video games and just want more pretty point and shooty.

    • @weskerpawnch
      @weskerpawnch 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That being said, REmake and RE4 are my favorite titles in the series for very different reasons, and very few of those reasons are found in RE2 Remake. The gunplay of RE4 is supplemented by the risk-reward of getting close for a melee attack with a swarm of enemies in range. It's nowhere near scary and I'm not saying it's hard, but I'd consider it a fun and challenging gameplay loop. RE 2 Remake just has zombies that might loose limbs, but with the bullet sponging it's not fun and there's as much incentive to fight enemies as classic RE, which doesn't mesh with point and shooty. On the other end of things, REmake is a well put together horror experience with a sense of personality. RE2 Remake just looks like so many other third-person shooters with zombie-esque enemies where a super serious drama story are so important that it feels bland and less than the original. Even if they didn't intend for it to be cheesy as we see it now, it had more life.

Fixed camera angles weren't a limitation of the time when you had third person games like Tomb Raider and Ocarina of Time. It was purposely used because the devs could use it to allow what the players could and could not see at any moment, to create tension. Like an enemy just off screen, where you can hear its sounds and you wonder what it is. Same for the tank controls, it was to create tension through gameplay.

I agree with some of his critiques (like the B scenario stuff and some of the cut content), but others don't make much sense to me.
I don't understand how someone could think Tyrant's reimagining was disappointing. It was legitimately the most stressful part of the RPD on my first couple playthroughs. It was perfectly timed, too; just as I was getting used to dealing with the zombies and lickers, suddenly there's a guy chasing me around the whole damn police station, forcing me to speed up around lickers or slow down around zombies. Hearing his footsteps nearby was the most nerve-wracking experience.
I didn't mind the lack of music all that much, because there's a shit-ton of ambient noise that's obviously there to fuck with your head. You'll hear a distant zombie moan, or half a dog bark, a piece of metal hit the floor, etc, and you're never quite sure if it's just the ambient noise or something around the next corner. Music doesn't work as well because of how quickly you can move through areas once you're familiar with them and because there are no more door-open loading scenes to make a smooth transition. This is a big part of the reason I don't play with the retro music -- the transitions are too quick and frequent. Also, his claim that the save room music goes away after the first time you've heard it is simply incorrect.

Robert Cortes Personally, I could care less about the soundtrack, I like it quiet with ambient sounds (I like it to mirror reality as closely as possible and I’m sure I’m not humming a song in my head rather than listening for the ambient noises like Mr. X's footsteps or Licker's claws on the wall). The criticism that the score doesn’t stick with me kinda is lost when a bunch of games with "awe-inspiring" scores also don’t stick with me because I’m not listening for it or, in RE2's case, I’m too busy panicking to stop and take in a score.
His criticism on Mr. X also somewhat irked me. His becoming a stalker character didn’t ruin him for me, it makes him so much more terrifying. I liked how, once he was introduced, the game forced you to completely rethink your strategy on puzzle solving and trying figure out new ways to maneuver around the station while also avoiding the Trenchcoat Thanos.
Finally, the atmosphere argument I agree was lacking. I thought it was amazingly creepy and eerie and I loved the moments with dark hallways with only the flashlight. Maybe my tastes for horror (and gaming in general) have drastically changed since I first played RE2, but I honestly liked the reimagining a tad bit better.

As someone who stopped playing this series altogether after 5 since I didn't like 4 or 5 (and it seems like 6 was an even bigger joke), this was the PERFECT use of over-the-shoulder. Everything felt tactical and every move we had to do was intentional. You complain that Mr. X was an 'inconvenience' but in my view he is part of what made the game work so well. The zombies are actually threatening, but once you know how to deal with them they're no big deal. The lickers are hard to fight but if you sneak past it's fine... but if Mr. X is following you persistently then dealing with them suddenly becomes a huge ordeal. You complained about him following you during the "move the bookshelves" segment and how you had to distract him elsewhere, but that's the entire point! The game forces you to make decisions and be tactical.
Also you said you couldn't focus on Marvin because of Mr. X but in playthrough 1 Marvin dies before Mr. X starts stalking you, so I don't understand that. Also as for Mr. X 'teleporting' that only happens during scripted sequences like breaking through the wall or the prison escape segment, etc. Otherwise he's always persistent in the world and in real places.

singular on1 Nerrel wasn’t putting “the flow of the game” above “being scared,” cause it was pretty obvious he wasn’t scared.
For most players, when a really simplistic and very not well done mechanic like X is so easy to avoid that you know exactly what to do when he comes around (ie, just go lure him somewhere else, come back to where you were) he ceases to be a character/enemy and just becomes, like Nerrel said, a nuisance.
Predictability isn’t scary. It becomes a flowchart, not horror based reactionism. X stops being scary when you understand him, and if you found him scary throughout the whole third of the game that’s dedicated to him, you likely never internalized that or really understood him. He’s just frustrating to deal with.

Even after thoroughly understanding how to avoid his ai, I always felt as if what I was doing could easily be interrupted by a legitimate threat. I think what separates him from most stalker enemies (which I tend to hate in horror games as well) is that the player always has a legitimate agency in avoiding/stunning him. To me it's very similar to the choices you make every time you decide what limbs to shoot off of a zombie; there is no correct answer, but instead there are many (often hard) choices that the player is forced into picking from. I never felt as if I was simply just running in a straight line from hello neighbor, but instead I felt as though he was just another element to induce panic-based decisions in regards to resource and health management. Furthermore, I have to agree that his appearance in the Ada Wong segments absolutely lack tension due to the absence of any real decision making (those segments more so are literally just walking in a straight line away from the guy). Horror an tension are extremely subjective however, and I can absolutely understand how that certain perspective would cause him to be a complete annoyance.

I was looking forward so much to playing the second scenario with Claire, and then replaying the game with the inverted scenarios for each character. Then I realized there really was no such thing as a second scenario and the story was completely killed by all the contradictions I saw while playing Claire's scenario B. I still really like the game, but I don't feel like replaying it at all anymore...

I was kinda in the same boat, played leon A then claire B. Thought the "true" ending was great(never played original re2). Then completed s rank claire A on standard and hardcore, for the infinite pistol and smg. Its really worth it id say for the cutscenes and dialogue alone as Claire A and Leon B.

I will say that mr x was pretty well used. He apeared enought to spice things up but not to the point of ruining the experience, because part of the appeal was to explore and find things. He worked very well when you knew he was looking for you but didnt know where he is. Because you could hear his footsteps and the suspense of suddenly seeing him was great. But as more time passes the cracks start showing and he becomes an obstacle(and not very threatening at that).

I remember just getting into Resident Evil when this game was announced. I’d beaten 7 and 4, which made me excited to see another game with Leon coming out. I actually went to a thrift store and bought a copy of Resident Evil 2 on the PS1 like half a year before the release of the remake in January of 2019. Because of that, I had a really interesting experience playing both essentially one after the other. I love the RE2 remake, it’s one that I go back to frequently. I also love the original PS1 title, both managed to scare me multiple times which I wasn’t expecting from either. I thought that the PS4 title would’ve been action oriented similar to Resi4, and that the original would’ve been too dated. Because of these expectations, I had a great time with both. Though Mr X or Tyrant was extremely annoying after my initial playthrough of the PS4 version.

"Resident evil 2's atmosphere was created by dramatic angles, great art direction, and a really powerful soundtrack. And that's why it's held up so well in spite of looking so pixelated and blocky. The things the atmosphere was based on don't really age." I'm kind of speechless. That's incredibly well said.

Your sentiments pretty much echo my own although I didn't hate Mr. X as much. He was easy to elude but became annoying when I had to do the gears puzzle in the clock tower and had to keep going in and out of the room until he spawned from somewhere that wasn't in my path. His initial reveal is underwhelming compared to the original and he's easily eluded because the roof area isn't blocked off after his arrival either. On a 2nd scenario things also got silly because I simply ran laps around the station using the outdoor stairwell whenever he blocked my progress on that end of the building.
The Ada section would have been fine were it not bogged down by the hacking mechanic. It just makes the whole thing tedious instead of difficult. After two tries I did it without any weapons and got the achievement since the enemy and hacking placements are always the same. Sherry's segment was good until I realized it's just the second VHS tape from RE7. While they at least were smart enough to randomize the block puzzle this time, the rest of the segment is too heavily scripted to have any real replay value. The croc also has none since he attacks from the same directions every time. In the original you could at least choose to fight him as an optional boss to challenge yourself, and doing so even rewarded you with items in the A scenario. The devs were even considerate enough to put a typewriter just outside his room for those who chose to fight him head on.
The return of the zapping system was so baffling to me because prior to release, Capcom claimed they were forgoing it in favor of two more distinct campaigns. Something I was actually on board for. But instead we just get two scenarios that overlap even more than the original did. Every boss in a first or second scenario in the original is unique but here every boss is the same except for the last one and the extra boss in the second half is of course the same regardless of which character you're using.
All in all I'm glad I just bought this game used because the experience was underwhelming at best. I'd give it a 6/10 personally. It's not just that the game isn't fixed cam, it's that it's also OTS, a play style that is incredibly bog standard at this point. After playing RE4-6, Rev 1-2, TLOU, TEW1-2, GOW, Uncharted, The Order 1886 and The Final Season of the Walking Dead I'm really tired of it. Until Dawn felt like a breath of fresh air and understood the advantage to using fixed cam for a horror game. The devs for it were even pleased with the sales despite their numbers which to me says they had reasonable expectations for it unlike most other companies these days. I don't think I'll even bother with TLOU2 or Days Gone. I only gave this reimagining the time of day because it's an RE game, and even then I still didn't support it.

@singular on1 To better explain, I have casually dabbled with RE2 since it got a release on the PS3 PSN, plus prior experience with Resident Evil DS did paint the picture of how atmospheric the games are than downright scary. That much I can see without getting too far into it (I got stuck on a puzzle that was removed in the remake in the RCPD).
So even without those tracks etched into my mind, I knew it felt horribly lacking with no OST. OST is also often half the game to me, so after like 40 minutes I popped it on and have no regrets.

The over-reliance on darkness and that fucking flashlight combined with the over the shoulder camera was actually headache inducing. If it was first person, you would be able to spot doors on the left or right as you walk down a corridor, but when it's third person and you can only see the 30% of the screen illuminated by the flashlight, you cannot see any doors without constantly swinging the light from side to side as you go. It also doesn't help that apparently every single surface in the police station has been polished to a mirror sheen, so simply pointing the flashlight at a wall is enough to blind you to whatever is actually there.

There's a very simple concept at work here regarding the shortcomings of this game's atmosphere vs. the original: Attention = tension The PS1 game had detailed pre-rendered backgrounds which were mostly very color-saturated, contrasty, and well-lit. This, combined with the fixed camera angles, meant that every area commanded the player's full attention. When your brain is fixated on absorbing all the little details of the area, the colors, the lighting, the camera angle, etc, it creates a sense of immersion. Attention = tension. When all the environments are visually similar (i.e. dark, desaturated, and viewed from the same over the shoulder perspective) it means that the player's attention is no longer on each area - no longer on the painting-like setting, the bright colors juxtaposed with the lingering possibility of violence or a jump scare, but only on the zone of vision immediately in front of the third-person character view. No attention, no tension.

No matter what, every time I explored the same room a second time, I was using the same inputs. @singular on1 The problem people have with mr. X is that he is overused. Think about it. Also, compare him in this remake with Nemesis in RE3.

kek, did you actually play it or did you just listen to your british youtube reviewer tell you he's better?

100% agree with you on the tone, atmosphere and musical score for the umbrella transport, it holds huge memories of my childhood just hearing that eerie score 👌 just shows how perfect for that scene it was.

Another excellent analysis, & while I do agree with some of your points, I do think sometimes "less is more" in relation to the score (or lack-there-of). By not using a score, it feels more "real" in the sense that if you were experiencing what the character in the game was, there would be no score, therefore it makes it feel more "realistic"? (real life doesnt have a score).

Yeah Mr. X was pretty damn annoying. The only argument in Mr. X's favour is that he makes the other enemies more dangerous when he's around due to you needing to move fast. At that point though you'll already have the shotgun/G. Launcher, which can take enemies out quickly anyway.
Anytime Mr. X is alone, he's a chump only there to make moving the book cases in the library a damn chore. If you ever run into Mr. X, you either need to take a detour which drags out the travel time, or take a very small health hit (just run at him, he'll throw you to the ground for a extremely tiny amount of damage, then just get up and run at him again. You'll then run right by him).

You're basically complaining that you're playing on a low difficulty.

11:05 - 11:39 Bravo! Bravo! That sums up the OG vs the Remake perfectly. I just don't get that warm feeling in my stomach from RE2R that I did/do with the OG.

Bought the original ost after realizing I literally couldn’t remember a single song from my numerous playthroughs, so true.

I think that the problem with this remake was that they tried way too hard to move some locations and make some situations different from the original and with some they succeeded and with others they didn't, I don't really mind what they did with the soundtrack even though I love the original and I understand they focused more on sound effects.
However the main reason I wanted this remake was because of the story, I hoped they would explain some inconsistencies from the original, however remake made it somehow even worse with how they handled the A and B scenarios.
RE1 remake basically made me never replay the PS1 version again, because it improved on everything, however even if I really like this RE2 remake, I'm looking forward to replay the original some day
