- This is the second video of a two part series showing how I preserve the iron relics that I find while metal detecting. This method is especially useful when doing large volumes of relics. I have used this process with good success for several decades. Please do not attempt to do this indoors as it can be a serious fire hazard. Don't use good utensils or containers as they will for ever after be coated with wax. Your wife/mother/girlfriend will NOT be happy with you if you do. Been there, done that!
The first part of this two part series is titled "Preserving Iron Relics: Electrolysis" and can be found on my channel.

Can't believe this was almost 10 years ago, thanks for passing on the knowledge Chigg, It's like you are the really smart uncle we never had, or like the dad a lot of us never had..you have taught us so much, and ask for nothing but a like and share in return for priceless information. Thank you.
Beau, thanks for taking the time to make and post this, very helpful.
I only recently discovered your channel, and I absolutely love it. Your videos are entertaining and informative, and something I can safely show any of my fellow geeky friends. I'm really enjoying the "how to" series. I hope you continue to add to it. Thank you, sir, for the good work and hours of entertaining education.
Hello!! I really enjoyed this video of preserving your relics!!! I love when you find these and know you are preserving them for the future!! Thank you again!

I have been binge watching your videos .you are an amazing teacher.
Been waiting for this video! Keep it up.
Great video, Beau. I dug my first axe head recently. Instead of heating up a whole vat of water/wax, I rubbed paraffin all over it and heated it with a small propane torch to melt the wax. If I got the wax a little heavy in spots, I used a wire brush on it and re-melted the wax. It worked great! I used your electrolysis method to clean the axe head first.
We just started our first electrolysis bath for the finds from this year, and we had no idea about the wax treatment. Thanks for the useful information. :-)
Loved seeing the wax process. It's never easy to preserve our past.
Absolutely essential information. Why dig stuff up if we don't know how to conserve it properly. I saw a video on Facebook earlier today when someone asked the best way to clean a coin and 99%of advice was soapy water. If I hadn't seen your video about not using water I would have not known any better. Thanks for the great advice 👍🇬🇧
Really great series of start to finish, well done.
That axe head looked AMAZING after you finished it, I would LOVE to see more video’s like this! 💕👍🏻💕
Interesting and helpful for saving some historical iron or steel relics. Great video.
Great video! Just what I needed to know! Thanks for posting.
Bout time chigger! You've been telling me that this one was coming for about a year! Got tired of waiting and figured most of it out myself. But, did not include the brushing step that you showed, which really does aid the appearance. No doubt that the paraffin does a better job of preserving than any of the other methods that I have tried over the years. THANKS!
Your videos are so informative!
Beau this is another great video. Thanks for your time and trouble.
Thanks for the videos ! I realy like that your the first metal detector guy on TH-cam who records with a good camera, may u ask were you look for stuff?
Great video! It's nice to see you follow through with what happens after you've found your relics. It's very wise to point out the dangers involved in waxing these items and in showing how it should be done safely. It's amazing what a coat of wax can do for a relic in readiness for display. Thanks for sharing this video and awesome advice. GL & HH :D
Great video. Thanks. After electrolysis what else would you recommend using or doing to get rid of remaining rust before waxing? Look forward to your reply.
Really interesting video, thanks for showing us how to do this process.
John.
Wish you would comment and give your opinion on how you speculate that the Civil War finds ended up where you found them, such as a rolled over wagon crossing a stream, a skirmish etc..Nice job
I never knew how old iron relics was preserved, thanks for the video!
I like seeing how you preserve them that’s cool! It’s nice to be able to save some history.
Hey now, don't be so insecure! I don't do any digging myself (don't have the funds, time nor proper locations) but I really enjoy these more 'in-depth' video's. It really is awesome. I also really enjoy the hunt video's by the way, because you add so much (unnecessary but fun) detail. For example, how to find stuff - the names of certain plants - history lessons. I really really do like your stuff.
I seasoned a antique ax head that was given to me. Same process I use for cast Iron skillets and it came out great!
Thank you all is now clear
Bob
Awesome, informative and enjoyable. Great vid.
Glad you enjoyed it.
looks great , and great idea!
Great tutorial Beau TYVM
GL & HH
Love your videos. Where I live in NY, we don't have areas like this near me. And the places like this are classified by the local Historic Societies, so if you dig on them you'll be arrested. So I get stuck searching beaches for clad and jewlery.
The Ace Pro that you use is 100% waterproof?
Great video, much appreciated!
Would it also be possible to do this without having to dip the relics in wax like say rubbing some wax over them and melting that with a torch? Fantastic video btw, been following your channel for years!!
Chigg, how do you feel about using a tannic acid type solution to treat relics? I've seen others use it and it seems like a much easier process. But I value your opinion so I wanted to ask. THANKS!
Great information.... Good video....👍👍👍👍
Have you ever used a stuff called Butvac mixed with acetone, I heard its good to use for relics, fossils and rock.
Awesome video! thanks for sharing.
I wonder what evaporust would do to clean them up or would it dissolve them?
Good info on how to preserve your items I may one day need to do this I have a few things that I need to take care of. But I do have a question what is the average time that you wax each load and where do you get your bulk wax at thanks?
Great video!
How much water and wax do u use? I never explained that . I did my electrolosis and am now ready for wax
hey what is that oval ring thing called I found one that is 4.5" by 13.25" and heavy.
Super informative! Awesome little operation. Do you treasure hunt for a living?
Thats a lot of work! What do you do with all the finds after you have finished preserving?
Love doing stuff like this...
After cleaning the metal you could use the sun on a good hot summer day to heat the metal,. Then dunk it in acetone and back into the sun to evaporate the acetone which removes the moisture and then spray with clear acrylic varnish.
I have watched several of you videos. What do you do with all of these relics?
Very informative video thanks,do you sell your relics to support your hobby or donate to museums I live in Franklin Tn where the battle of franklin took place they have a few museums with relics
Thank you and much respect .
great video really well done.
Very informative
7:23 You can put a rod or pole across the edges of the pot and the foam will not be able the pass the rid/pole.
looking at wax;s some say bee's wax soy wax an just so many ..?? an how many pounds do i need to start with for pot about the same size i think as the one u have or just little bigger.
Where can you buy the wax at? And what do you do with the left over wax, can you reuse it?
Hi very interesting and usefull, but I am a little confused. To me wax is wax as used in candlemaking and parafin is a cleaning agent and a fire accelerant. You refer to both. Is it molten candlewax in the vat or liqiud parafin ?
Some of that stuff still looks useable. That wedge (maul?) looks really solid. If it were me, I'd wire brush it, paint it, and put it on a new handle.
wow nice work man. is most of that stuff from the civil war ?
Beau - great tips in the video, thanks. On the bayonet, I've been told that if you "seal" the rust on a relic, the item will continue to rust and eventually corrode completely. Is that true? The suggestion, next time you have "delicate" item like the bayonet, try soaking in apple cider vinegar to remove rust. It's much more gentler than electrolysis and, in most cases, just as effective.
Thank you so much for the video and the run through. What would you do with the old hoe to preserve that when it is in that state?
Electrolysis is sometimes the only thing that will help preserve it.
Beau wouldent peanut oil work to lock out the rust
Is waxing a lot better than oiling? Happy easter
Do you keep all the things you find
Can an iron pan be used after this is done to it?
man!!!! i wish you were my grandpa :( your so cool.......your videos are awesome and have a very good historical knowledge :D.
How long needs to cook iron in parafin?
How strong of a magnet do you need for a 60lb. Cannon ball?
How well does hot wax preserve relics, vs.how well rust conversion products preserve them? Sure, the hot wax is much cheaper, but if you have some special items to preserve....
I’ve been watching you for 7 years holy...
You had a warning a few times about the foam boiling over and causing a fire, try putting wood over the pot. A piece of wood like a wooden spoon placed over the kettle will stop any boil over. Works great while boiling noodles or what not in the kitchen!
That's not a 100% effective method.
great viideo👍
Also, is that 100% paraffin wax in that drum? thanks.
Dudes got an arsenal.
What happened to your Spencer? I'd like to see what it looked liked cleaned up.
Beau..do you have a dedicated relics room in your house? Do you give lectures to school kidz or senior citizens or other civic groups? this is such a fantastic hobby..passion..and I am sure you could instill generations to come to carry on..Great stuff..amazing..thx..
@@aquachigger very interesting job but yes some muskets in heat of battle was loaded so many times and not being fired. You can gets from gun shops a gunpowder solvent it dissolves propellant left inside and destroys gunpowder its for cleaning fire arms 🔫👍🐺🐾
Thanks very cool
I am going to be just like you one day , your awesome!!!
Hey Beau, would this work with modern steel that is still being used? ..say to protect an axe someone is actively using?
It will, just get it clean and dry first. For light coatings, you can even use spray on (wax) furniture polish.
This method is for LONG-TERM preservation, a more efficient and economical method for 'working' pieces would be coating with oil. Look up Paul Seller's video on making an 'oil rag can' to quickly go over tools.
Thanks for the info. Hornbush.
is it okay to do the hot wax treatment without electrolysis? I'm wondering because I don't have any electrolysis equipment but I want to preserve the iron, thanks
He did that in the video.
I have an arty shell I need cleaned and preserve. Would you ever consider charging to clean/preserve?
I used to do that for people, but don't do that anymore, sorry.
I have a WW1 bayonet my dad found at atwood park (Camp Grant) I need to get it preserved
Favorited!
varnish will preserve them too,if you can stand the stink
what is a electrolics
Why can't you put these relics in an oven at a low setting to get rid of the water?
Wax on, wax off, Aqua son 🐲🐉
Do you sell the relics ?
Could I use just paraffin and no candle wax? Also what do you use to get the relics out of the hot wax?
+Beau Ouimette ok thanks for the tips!
Aquachigger would you sale a canon ball
Will beeswax work? I have tons of that free :)
What kind of wax did you use man? Thanks
What ratio do you use?
***** Thanks! Great video and very helpful. Have you ever tried "seasoning" any pieces before? Similar to what you might do if you were seasoning a frying pan?
Well, I'm not thinking along the lines of a non stick surface. Just wondering if it would work as an alternative to the hot wax method for preservation.
So ideally you want a thin layer of wax left on the relic and this will prevent it from rusting further? I JUst want to be sure I understood the whole process. Thanks! ~Dolly
wax on ..ah waxxoff grassahopppa
Where do you buy paraffin wax
It figures I would find what I need in your videos. I recently subscribed to your channel and I have been just amazed. About a week ago I found an old axe head head on a friend's farm that has been letting me metal detect. I have been hitting it hard and three generations have watched me dig things up from five generations back. I am going to give electrolysis a shot. I am going to put a handle and burn the family name on it, whichever side is the most presentable. They have all been very Kind and interested in the things I am finding. Anyway, Thank You for all of your videos. You are instrumental in this gift.
You might find a buyer for that goosewing axe head....timber framers collect them and use them.
ill just send you another..
Hi
enter text here? that flashed for only a single frame
Yeah, they are over there, though I understand that they haven't had a killer trip so far. I lied to them, both Ray and Lee, and told them that I had been in touch with Sal, and he was going with them.I NEVER LIE TO RAY!...but I did this time. They knew someone was being added to their group, but didn't know who it was. From what I understand, the addition to the group is not very popular and I am told that Ray is about ready to kill him! Don't think the guy knows who he is messing with!
