  • Learn how to burn in a beeswax finish on a steel table using a hand torch. The steel work table will be used outside and the beeswax finish acts as a nice rust-inhibitor and it looks really nice.

    Cool project, Jon. I've watched some of your encaustic painting videos and was wondering if you've ever used textured or degraded steel as a substrate/ground/support? Just thinking of the possible effects from heating a painted surface from behind. Would also be cool to see how the wax interacts with different natural metal patinas.

  • @eedom69

    That's cool man. I saw some people dipping bolts in oil after heating. How long will that last? I got this floor in my step van made of aluminum diamond plate but there are steel rivets in the floor that rust. And I wanted to remove the rust and then maybe coat it or at least the bolts/rivets with smthg like oil or wax or paint.
    Plan is to cover the floor with insulation and then wood so it's going to get buried and I don't want the rust to expand under the floor. Any thoughts?

  • @Richard-dh8ny

    I'm super impressed with how your metal welding table turned-out! I'm now thinking of applying bees wax to a large steel table top vise I use outdoors. The vise is brand-new and has factory paint on 60-70% of the surfaces. Do you think the paint will be affected by applying the wax at 200 degrees? I would do this on a 70-80 degree day and avoid heating the metal which will surely damage the paint. I'd like to apply the wax to the entire vise and not just the bare metal, assuming that will work ok. Thanks again for this excellent video.

    • @JonPetersArtHome
      @JonPetersArtHome  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I really don’t know… I would try applying to a small test area first. The only problem with wax is once you put it on it’s very difficult to remove. The wax on the welding table needs to be reapplied once a year to look good

  • @benglatt7088

    Thanks for the video. Does it have a waxy feeling to the touch? Or is it smooth. Also, could you clear coat this as well, or would that be redundant?

    • @someotherdude
      @someotherdude 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't imagine a clear coat of any kind of paint would stick after flowing wax into it. No way.

    Hi, Thank you for the video!
    Do you know what happens to the wax when it is heated with the torch, or whats the difference of applying the liquid without heating afterwards?

  • @thesage1096

    anyone that may be aware, i have machined raw steel table top for my bandsaw (brand: shopfox). it tends to get a thin layer of rust, discoloring my lumber and creating friction on the surface making sliding pieces across the table difficult. can i use bees wax on such a surface ? can it be made to a very smooth surface to allow for sliding, and at the same time be relatively wear resistant (it wont be feasible to have to reapply after every other project)

    Jon, would this be a safe finish to use on say a sheet of mild steel (small) that is in the kitchen. It's not eaten off or directly comes into contact with food, but it is in the kitchen (my belief is that yes it is food safe). Mainly though, I'm curious as to how much upkeep something like this would require in doors if it were permanently attached to a wall for example. Let me know your thoughts.

    To apply the finish to wood would you do the same but with a heat gun instead of a torch?

    • @AppalachianLife
      @AppalachianLife 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beeswax finish on metal works best when the metal is hot enough to sizzle the wax.

    • @JonPetersArtHome

      yes and sometimes I use the heat gun to melt bees wax into end grain

  • @Bodragon
    @Bodragon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You know if you dissolved the beeswax in a solvent such as toluene, then you can do the whole thing cold.
    No need to heat anything up and your homemade "lacquer" will also dry quite quickly.
    Minutes rather than hours.
    Just a thought.

      Yes, the ground clamp will bite through the finish. Just make sure you scratch in what you are welding on for good contact.

  • @someotherdude

    I would think preheating with a heat gun, painting on some wax, and then heating again with the heat gun would be more effective in getting the wax to flow into the metal grain.

    on your outdoor table why don't you use a rust proof paint so you don't have to keep doing that

    • @AppalachianLife
      @AppalachianLife 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because it is a welding table.

    • @TobyGarcia
      @TobyGarcia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rust-proof paint is an insulator, so it would not work so well with the welder. Just like when you're jump-starting a car, you want to put the negative lead on bare metal, not painted. Apparently bees wax transmits electricity.

    • @TobyGarcia
      @TobyGarcia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      According to physics.info/dielectrics/, bees wax is apparently dielectric, so it won't conduct electricity at low volts/apms. But it breaks down pretty readily at high voltage/amperage.

    • @JonPetersArtHome
      @JonPetersArtHome  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will be welding on the table so I didn't want to paint it. I tested it out and it works good.
