(ENG) Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - Test Drive and Review

  • Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) can travel up to 50 kilometres in zero-emissions mode. Then the petrol engine kicks in. It can send power to the wheels, but it can also charge Outlander's batteries, for example when driving on motorway. Mitsubishi created great technology, but is packing it into an Outlander the best choice?

    Kinda lame excuses, 1 keyless , stays in your pocket, 2 back door lock not really something you admire on any car, and for the size and usability its an amazing SUV ! Love mine , would buy the new one,

    Not a CVT gearbox, not a storage area for the key. Not researched very well. Not a very good understanding of the car. Not a very good review.

    You only need to insert the key when the remote's battery is dead. It's a sensor that allows you to start and drive the car.

    My parents have bought the 2016 model earlier this year and it really is a great car. It now goes ~50 km on average with one battery charge and it no longer has a CVT. The two electric motors put out a maximum of 120 kW together but unfortunately they are limited to something like 60-70 kW in electric driving, if you try to use more power it kicks in the petrol engine. We don't have the sat-nav so that's not a problem in our car. Acceleration is pretty reasonable even without using the petrol engine, top speed in electric mode is about 120 km/h, when going faster you just get over that 60-70 kW limitation so it fires up the petrol engine again. Build quality on the interiour is okay, it does not feel cheap or anything but it's also not exceptionally nice. The radio and climate control are crap though, you have to look at which button you are pressing and the radio does not like USB sticks with too many files on them (It takes forever to skip to the next title).
    Driving is really smooth as you would expect it from an electric drivetrain. The brakes are a little too strong if you go slow and get past the regenerative braking part of the brake pedal, but that eliminates at higher speed due to the regenerative braking smoothing it out

    What!? It looks like a Moon lander from space, like the iMiEV. Nothing like it in its category. Nice to see it is left drive as I want import one to Canada. Did yours have ACC or Lane Assist? Pretty good review. I’m worried when you said the ice started up in chilly weather. My iMiEV will preheat on 110v till about 0C. I do not have a level 2 yet which I would think it would double the preheat the cabin to say 10-20C without using battery.

      AFAIR driver aids were pretty limited back then. Three facelifts later it could have ACC.

      Depends on where you're from. I imagine about half of Europe promotes ecological forms of personal transportation, and the other half doesn't give a toss. Without hefty tax incentives this car is an expensive shitbox on wheels.

      And what are your thoughts on the 2.3l diesel outlander?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it was 2.2L, and I haven't driven an Outlander with this motor for years. But I recall I was generally impressed with the 2016 2.0L petrol.

    I´m with you...the materials are cheap looking but it last for many years. We have a Lancer, wich is almost 11years old and there are no issues with anything.

    Marek isnt it better if the hybrid system is paired with a diesel engine which is more economical than an equivilant petrol engine? Makes sense right?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Taimur Hussain Yes, and no. Diesel engines are generally more expensive to buy and maintain. Electric motor in a hybrid drivetrain improves torque low the the rev range. Diesels offer high torque from low revs, so you don't need an electric motor there. And since diesels are more economical in the first place, benefit of adding an electric motor will be less visible, especially taking into account higher price.

      +José Marcos Chalmés García I've driven it recently. Not enough has changed to do a full review, but I'll be posting a brief sum-up video. Basically the new one looks better, has slightly better materials inside, but same sat nav (unfortunately). Generally speaking it's the same car with the same positives and negatives, like this one.

      +Marek Drives Actually that's your review of the first model, which is a nice review, by the way. I think the car is not doing bad on sales and there must be some reasoning behind.. Perhaps stressing its good aspects a little bit more would help the audience understand why. Using one comment read here, I like phrases like "the look and feel is cheap but also durability is very good" (for example) rather than simply "the look and feel is cheap".

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      José Marcos Chalmés García That's the thing, I can't understand why this thing sells so well. It's purely for economic reasons (i.e. you get good incentives for it throughout Europe). I appreciate the technology, but it's packed in junk.

  • @yakazum1
    @yakazum1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Car looks cheap
    I don't see much reason to go for electric verso not when it's just a pain in all aspects
    It's a pity that most of car producers using the electric cars only for marketing purpose to say "we have also electric car ..."

    • @jchalmes
      @jchalmes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, actually Mitsubishi is not doing bad for what I read here and there. I suspect, though, it is not a car that you fall in live with, but merely very convenient in terms of money. They say it's a good deal as a company car.
