    This is the best detailed review of the Outland PHEV - my friend bought a secondhand one 2 weeks ago and we've been figuring out the drive modes. This video has really helped. Thank you.

      Hi there, can I ask about your experience with this car? We are going to look at a 2016 used model tomorrow. We were looking at Toyota Auris estate hybrids but they are just a bit expensive. I'm also curious about the real running costs of the Mistubishi. Thank you!

    • @hiltos
      @hiltos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@biotopia5319 hi, I really like the car, mine came with a high trim level so inside is very nice. It's a different way of driving, trying to balance economy driving, using the regenerative paddles to slow down but you soon get use to it and I actually miss it when I have to drive another car. The boot space is good, mine has the subwoofer in it that takes up a bit on the side and those weird drinkholders that are a leftover from the 7 seater diesel version. I charge at home every night so for shorter trips I'm basically only using battery unless I need the heater or aircon. Unfortunately I work over 66km away from home so the i have to use petrol to get there for part of the way and all the way back but it's still pretty cheap. The tank is not huge, 40lt but so far it's been good. We have a small caravan and it tows it ok but only ok. I do wish I had purchased a version with android CarPlay but that wasn't available in the 2016 models. Space in the back is ok, you can fit 2 kids in car seats in there but you would struggle with 3.

      @@hiltos Hi, thank you for your really detailed reply! That was very nice of you to take the time! We went and looked and I just loved driving it! It was quiet and light and compared to our old car (2005 toyota corolla) I felt like I was in a spaceship! We put down the deposit and will get it in a few weeks. I'm looking forward to learning how to make the best use of the paddles and other features. I think it comes with bluetooth at least...but just being in a car that wasn't 16 years old was already amazing!

    • @hiltos
      @hiltos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@biotopia5319 congrats, i was the same coming from a 2005 volvo v50 which feels really heavy to drive now. Our outlander came with reverse, forward side parking cameras which are super useful as the Outlander is a big car. Enjoy your new car ;)

    yes, you carry the other system (elektrik or fuel) around, that`s an disadvantage... But you need no second Car for your Holiday Trip. If you have a charging option at home, and the electric range fits to your dayli drive to work/to home.... this is not a bad system...

    A very good and detailed review, and not the typical TH-cam product sales pitch.
    I am thinking about a replacement for my 2013 Mercedes GL350. However, as you say hybrids are really just a transition between combustion & full electric vehicles, so maybe I'll wait awhile and see what innovations (if any) come on to the market.

    Thanks Thomas! Another review? You don't ever sleep, do you? :-)
    The facelift did the looks of this car a world of good in my view. I really didn't care for the looks before. (Yes, I am being diplomatic here..)
    The technology is quite interesting and Mitsubishi seems to make good and reliable cars. But that interior really lets the car down. As you said they really have to step that up.
    They sold (literally) boatloads of these in the Netherlands because of the very favorable tax treatment over here. But that has already been very much reduced, and next year it will be all over. Then again, maybe they will now ship all the hybrids to Germany! :-)

      Same in the UK, I got mine, in April of this year and ordered it in November purerly to get the most favourable level of government incentives. However, even I didn't get the benefits of those who bought one in the previous financial year (2015/16) The saving grace of course is that I was able to get the facelifted 2016 model even though I ordered mine in 2015.

    Nice review, Thomas-Thank you. I’d also like to see you review the 2018 Honda Clarity PHEV and the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV. I’ve test driven both, but am eager for your opinion on them, especially the Clarity. 👍🏼 Both 2019 versions are coming out in the Spring, but no major changes expected. Then Subaru’s Crosstrek PHEV is coming out in April. Can’t wait to see that one also. I’ve been all over different car tests as I decide which car will replace my VW Jetta Sportswagon TDI after the Buy-Back in two weeks. This next time, I’d like a PHEV, if possible. Thanks, Thomas! Autogefühl Thanks, Thomas. It occurs to me that maybe one of these days you could come to the US and review some of the key cars here that don’t make it to Europe, just for your American car community. What do you think?
      Those of us here would sure love to have some of the cars you have there that we can’t get...VW T-Roc, SEAT Arona, etc. it’s ironic that with all our globalization, the vehicle market can still be so checkered. Anyway, it would be so cool to see you review a few cars here though, and maybe in different cities too! Cheers, Thomas. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

    Thomas, could you do a review for the Toyota Rav4 Facelift for either the Petrol or the Diesel variant?

  • @kallasnikov
    @kallasnikov 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have since a year now, the Outlander 2016 4cyl. petrol here in Canada. It is very similar to this one in the look and feel minus the electric stuff of course. I was curious to know what this PHEV version is all about so thanks for one more great review, and interesting to see it explained in details. Not sure if the extra money to spend for the PHEV is a good deal for this particular SUV and its intended audience... I like my ordinary Outlander and I think it's a great value for money for families who need a multi purpose SUV, for town, the outdoors and also snowy winters and without paying allot. Yes the material is a mixed bag, not always super quality plastics are involved. Interior styling is somehow outdated but doesn't look as cheap or poor as the Outlander Sport (known as the RVR here in Canada)... Build quality is just OK but uneven. Driving is artificial and sometimes doesn't feel too firm to the ground on high speed but it is rated as a very safe SUV... And the AWC system is among the most efficient AWD out there for snow or some mild off-roading.

    Excellent review, thank you Thomas!!...I do have a couple of questions though.
    1). Would you suggest getting a small spare tire because the PHEV Outlander does not come with one?
    2). In your opinion which car do you think is better? The Toyota RAV 4 Hybrid or the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV all 2016 models? Maybe you could do a video comparison on both :-)...Thanks again for the in depth review on the Outlander PHEV.

    • @autogefuehl

    I want a more economical and relaxing ride.
    Altough im not really sure about the reliability from the battery.. its pretty expensive to replace tough.
    Also, i still find the technique a bit strange, for example:
    Driving electric and the engine doesn't warm up, you go on the highway and the engine kicks in while being cold but making a pretty high amount of rpm's.
    This can't be good for the engine right?

    I have a Ford Focus Electric, and the brakes perform in a similar manner (no regeneration during heavy braking). My theory is regen braking doesn't have the same directional stability as today's friction brakes, as I've noticed what I can only describe as torque steer in reverse when braking on uneven roads.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      good point

    • @julianopificius6910
      @julianopificius6910 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I believe the answer is as follows, from what I can interpret from my own test drive, and a little background knowledge of regeneration systems used in industrial systems. When you brake manually you take energy out of the system (reduce speed) by a process external to the regen controller, which is designed to only remove energy at a certain rate, resulting in deceleration at a certain rate (programmable via B1 - B5 in this vehicle). When you brake manually, you "get ahead" of the regen system - decelerating faster than it would do itself, so it essentially has less work to do, and the regen power drops. Other vehicles - like my Prius, for example, have a different control system which only applies manual braking when the regen system is operating at maximum.

    • @robertanderson9584
      @robertanderson9584 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I didn't feel he hated it at all don't know where you're coming from with that point of view. This the best review of this car I've seen (and I've read and watched all of them) Thomas really put across the enjoyment he got from driving in electric mode in the same way I do. I have had mine for exactly 3 months today and feel the same way why drive with a noisy, dirty ICE ever again, he was more objective than me in that he started where the standard of interior let it down, where I am completely happy with it. , I realise this is borne of the fact he drives so many cars and can really judge them against the competition. Anyway, well done Thomas, great balanced review...

    Hi, that's a great review. I am a Prius driver, but the Outlander is really nice for the family. I was wandering if the Outlander has the same planetary gear technology like the Prius, because that is the heart of continuous drive without changing gears. Can anyone answer?

    • @julianopificius6910
      @julianopificius6910 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No: as stated in the review, the engine is connected via a single gear ratio when connected mechanically, but it only connects mechanically at highway speeds; below that the engine charges the battery, and the electric motors drive the vehicle. That simplifies the transmission enormously, and contributes to reliability.

    Maybe the ABS and/or ESP can't function properly if the electric motor were regenerating when braking very hard? It's just a theory, though.
    Of course, low consumption is good for the environment, but not having to buy a new car because you crashed is even better for the environment in my opinion

    Great big review ! Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 2016 is excellent PHEV SUV 4WD vehicle ! Audio sound quality is real good with subwoofer ! Mitsubishi uses a very durable and hard plastics for inner details and dashboard (much more durable than many other car manufacturers) ! Quality materials and body parts and frame construction is strong material in its class.

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure. Sorry to say, man, but Google's your friend, there is more than enough info to counter your claim. Union of Concerned Scientists have found quite a while ago that building the average 24kWh battery (Outlander has 12kWh) on a mixed US grid would require 1000kg of CO2, that on top of over 6000kg of CO2 to build a normal car. 1 tonne of CO2 can easily be made within 3-4 months of driving a 50 mpg (UK) petrol or diesel car, and far quicker for a vehicle of the Outlander's size.
      Becareful when you rant.

    • @Zadrigo
      @Zadrigo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +toyotaprius79 co2 is not the issue, the issue is a huge amount of dangerous materials used in battery creation and the pollution after lifetime functioning. Stop with that co2 mentality, thanks to that we now have extreme diesel pollutants since we were only concerned with amount of co2, forgetting that there are other dangerous materials and gases, even more dangerous for the human environment. I thought only brain-dead politicians are still looking at ecology through co2 lenses...
      Btw of course there arent enough Golf reviews on the internet. Everyone is concerned with top trim, dsg, highline, diesel andor gti and gtd. No good honest review of a petrol golf anywhere and i think thomas would be most qualified to give us one since he goes into details and understands german auto industry. It is painful to see him suffering these japanese plastic toys or french toasters with kitsch style.

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, unless you can share something tried and tested, then I think that mentality is only pub talk.
      I totally understand the concerns involved, but like CO2, other emissions would depend on the actual power source - them of which being dwarfed by CO2 from coal or natural gas. The likes of sulfur and NOx from coal stations or methane leaks from natural gas stations would vary much more depending on the age and/or regulations met by the plant. It's not exactly within the power of the battery factory.
      And while the UCS does base their findings from an average mixed grid, it doesn't take into account individual factories incorporating on-site solar or wind generation. And believe me, battery plants and car assemblies from Nissan, BMW and VW definitely use solar arrays. Tesla's gigantic gigafactory for example will aim to run on 100% renewables on completion.
