When he asked him "Was it as easy as it looked?", they had no idea just how difficult it really was for him. That part was so profound.
I am glad that someone really did notice that nuanced bit in the whole scene. That whole subtlety of that lump in his throat is past acting brilliance that it borders on emotional immersion for the actor executing it. One cannot act out such moments. Will Smith really lived the character in this movie.
They had a clue thats why he said that.
I'm pretty sure he had an idea. I mean, Chris showed up in dirty clothes the first time after being arrested for unpaid parking tickets. He also showed up with one shoe at one point. I think it would have been obvious the guy's life was a shit show to anyone paying attention.
I think a kinder and more complimentary line would have been “was it as easy AS YOU MADE IT look”
I think the boss was talking about the work but Chris was talking about everything but the work.
The part where the Boss give him his $5 back.. signifies that Life has finally decided to give him back, instead of just taking. short, Subtle but a strong scene. Love this movie.
yeah very true. especially since movie his friend earlier never pays him back.
Another small detail is during the entire movie he’s walking against the crowd and right after he gets the job he starts walking in the same direction as everyone else, also significant that he isn’t having to fight against the world and is now flowing with the grain, not against it
@@jorgeherrera1074 I didn't note that.. Nice one.
Practically - if you follow the movie closely then you will see that Chris refused to work as he wouldn't be paid for those 28 days. The guy who introduced Chris to his boss promised him to get him paid. Chris was paid 5 dollars everyday for those 28 days.
Figuratively - You can give any kind of meaning to any of these scenes. It doesn't matter.
@@Roy-mk9zl i agree. He was also getting paid for the xray machines he used to sell. But they were all were just enough to meet his needs.
The way I see that 5$ is like a reward which he got without expectations, from the other person/life.
Anyway.. Its just me. 😊

Finally got my happy ending like in this movie: been at Rock bottom at a homeless shelter since the start of 2022, with no money, no hope. Went to several interviews with no luck, until the boss at Arby's saying I was hired. Hugging my fiance after the moment brought me to instant tears. What a powerful moment in my life. Update: I left Arby's in April of 2023, got a job at Culver's two days later, then at last got an apartment 2.5 months later, finally ending my homelessness after two years.)

@@godiegolem very true but it's the same thing every day. Fell sorry or give to people who have made a choice and now can't afford or overwhelmed with their choices. Meanwhile the guy or girl who is not a drain on society and doesn't have their hand out asking for freebies gets nothing and completely ignored and forgotten when the handouts are passed on,, yeah I'm a little sick of it.
What about the person who had a happy family and then it was taken from them? Loss of a partner that turned their situation into one that became a terrible struggle? Was that their choice? Yet they worked hard to keep what was left of their family intact and moving forward. Making sure their kids grow up in a happy and positive environment. What I love most about this film is the humility Chris showed. Never moped in the hard times, trying to get people to sympathize with him. He battled the demons, the hard times, the homelessness, and still held strong without anyone ever noticing. And was rewarded! Love, love, love this film.
Yeah, he's a really likable guy, unlike his wife. He always tried his best to keep it up and keep a civil and kind attitude towards everyone.
What more black ppl need to see and do. Stop complaining and being the victim. Shut up and get to work. Good things will come in time

great comment so was my mom RIP to her
Hands down man! Keep going!!
The problem is, that sometimes it just doesn't work out for you no matter how hard and how often you try.
I find the message of this movie to be highly problematic. What are we being told here? That everybody can make it, if only he tries hard enough? And what is the conclusion of that? Is it, that homeless people just have been lazy, not tried hard enough? So we can ignore them and walk by them, because it's their own fault where they are right now?
This film is the story of one lucky winner out of many losers, who will never make it. At some points in this film, the main character was just getting lucky, and that's all.
So he starts a career. But they didn't even stop there, did they? At the very end we are being informed that the main character ended up a millionaire. Excuse me, but how stupid can it get? The main goal of this movie seems to be to excuse capitalism by telling the tale of how everybody can make it. But it's a lie. Without luck, you cannot.
So, while the acting of Will Smith may be great, the movie itself is not. It's nothing but a stupid fairytale.
@@toyfabrik2993 damn, I guess it sucks that the “fairytale” is based on a true story then, huh?
@@ViolentDoughnut, a story that certainly didn't go down exactly like that, am i right? And as i already said, yes, there are people who get extremely lucky, but they are the exception to the rule. In capitalism it is like that: When you are down, you stay down. That's the rule. There might be exceptions, but hey, there are people winning the lottery every year as well, right?
I don't know why but when he gives back the $5 I always break. When you give away money, you don't expect to get it back. For someone to repay you means they thought about you, respected you. It symbolizes a lot, even if it isn't money. Even if it is just a coffee from the stop off. That.person.thought.of.you, end of story- that feels incredible.
It is also a gesture that acts as an indication of the bedrock of the financial markets which is to always return investors' money back to them. It is a pivotal fiduciary responsibility that simply cannot be taken for granted.
This scene and that part ought to be showed in loop to all of those third raters who have made it a nasty habit of scamming the financial markets while deciding to dupe trusting investors of their hard earned money and profits and decamping with years worth of their wealth all in the name of a 'zero sum game'.

its good for you to not give up. I would say though balancing the return on the time and energy put into applying for jobs and any rejections or acceptances is equally important. because if you keep applying for the same job over and over again and the ages of the other applicants keep getting younger and you get older it ceases to be a worthy endeavor applying for any profession. All repeated and endless rejections gets people is stuck in which case a person needs to go back to why they started looking for work in the first place and see if they are really doing what is best for them individually. Status, prestige mean nothing if you are sick every day and burn out before your 50 thats not a tenable situation for anyone.

Man Avenger level threat? Thats a joke, that movie is for kids and they have to sacrifice so little(people) to save the entire universe... that movie has no sense of commitment and sacrifice the second movie is a literal joke.
Yup
Avenger level problems don't exist. These problems do.
Will Smith should have received an Oscar for this role.
Not against Forrest Whitaker's performance as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland. He was terrifying in that film.
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424
Nah. As much as I love forest will smith worked his ass off every day to make sure this movie was accurate as possible but also made an emotional. He should’ve won the Oscar that year
He(will smith) deserve
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 you are correct. Forrest Whitaker’s performance was the best of that year. He is the only actor in history to sweep every single major award in a single year for that movie.
The part where he reads the book while standing just to get a little light really hits me, I realized how much so little things we take for granted, even with just a little light, what a masterpiece of a movie
So this literally happened to me yesterday. For 15 years I’ve worked jobs that have been back breaking. Went through a divorce. Lost everything. When the company I interviewed asked me to come in for a third interview I thought “well, if it’s meant to be then it will happen. If not, God has something else lined up.” When they said “would you like to work for our firm,” my eyes watered just like this scene. I can’t tell you the natural high of “all that crap I went through led me to this point. This point right here.” Point is, don’t give up. Your breakthrough will come.
Congrats man, you deserve it!
@@MCoconut97 thank you!

KEEP GOING STRONG!!!!
👏👏👏👏👏
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I CRIED AFTER WATCHING A MOVIE. MAN THE CUMULATIVE EMOTIONS THAT IS GOING THROUGH HIS BODY AFTER THE STRUGGLE IS PERFECTLY PORTRAYED BY WILL SMITH. THIS WAS AN AMAZING SCENE.
I totally agree with you, I know this very well as I have been there and know what it is like
You forgot caps on
Thank you for all the sacrifices, mom and dad. Truly.
Appreciate your parents, guys. Cherish all the moments you have with them.
I think of my Dad everytime I see this scene. The struggle he had, and when finally made it, how happy he was knowing his children (including me) won't starve again. He passed away now, and we went broke too before his passing. I wish he was still here 😢
I left a career and field where I wasn't appreciated, put down, and brought bad vibes home. I took a seasonal job in November 2021 with no guarantee that I would be kept after the holidays. They kept me after the holidays, but as a part-time employee. I applied for a bunch of jobs within the company to get full-time status. February 24, 2020, I finally got the full-time position I was striving for. The emotions I felt from this scene, are the exact emotions I felt when they pulled me in to tell me I was full-time.
Ohh God... how he was able to act that emotional scene...red eyes, tears almost dropping...wow..that was some real acting... spinning round, clapping, running to hug his boy...super performance to say the least...am wowed... I've replayed this bit three times already
I love the smile on Mr. Prom’s face cause he knows he’s changing this man’s life.
Will Smith, for me deserved an Oscar for his portrayal. The emotions, his eyes and body language were perfect. I forgot i was just watching a movie. I was in tears!
Such a powerful actor
yea, imo one of the best actors for me
so anyone that have gone through something similar would understand how emotional powerful this scene is. I lived a similar experience and living in NYC I have seen several other people going through great achievements, where the odds were almost all against them, almost impossible....however people dreams, courage and determination allowed them to turn that tiny % on their favor. Crazy stuff.
Bro why do we have the same name and last name?😂
I love this film. The resilience, determination and never give up attitude displayed by Chris Gardner is outstanding. The poor, the needy and the unfortunate always have a better story if they all keep going. If you are struggling right now, just keep going and don’t give up!
This movie in my opinion, is one of his best roles. I feel like I’m going through my pursuit of happiness moment now in my life. If you have never been through anything then you won’t see the true beauty of this movie. That feeling of always being looked over. Being down to your last dollar. Struggling to provide for a child. And then that moment of finally being recognized…whew!
I know this isn’t as bad as what Chris went through, not even close, but how he reacted was exactly how I reacted when I got my apprenticeship. It took me 5 years to finally get one. I was working in another job while looking for an apprenticeship and also went to college. When I got the interview I saw there was 12 other people going in for this aswell and only one was going to get it. I thought “I’m never going to get this apprenticeship” but I tried my best in the interview and they seemed impressed with everything that I did in college and other stuff. A few hours after the interview I got a call saying I got the apprenticeship and they said I was the perfect choice. I was so happy and I could start to get my life going.
Wow, congrats bro. 😎👍
I love this scene right here.... it hits WAY too close to home, and I can't watch this without crying. It's so beautifully done and really makes you feel just as happy as him, as if you fought the battle with him through the movie.
So many years later this part still gets me teary eyed..
Same here
this movie will always bring a tear to my eye. grew up as a female, first-gen immigrant, coming from a low income family. over the summer i signed an offer letter to work at one of the biggest tech companies in the bay area. hard work truly does pay off
He’s not just an actor. He’s a man and a father who absolutely electrifies every role he takes. Every. Single. Role. I’m almost to the point where I won’t watch a movie that Will Smith or Tom Hanks is not the leading actor.
My grandparents took in a teenage boy that crossed the border with his friends and worked/lived in the grape fields in Southern California....he now owns several grape fields and employees thousands of farm workers throughout California. The funny part is that he still lives in the same house that my sister and he bought 30 years ago. The most humble person I've ever met.
One of the most important lesson in this movie is to still show up and show out even when the odds are against you.
I remember seeing this movie with my dad I was sick so I stayed home from school. I was probably only 7-8yrs old. I cried the whole time :( until this part. It hits different now as an adult with my own kid, family, & struggles. You can’t help but admire his determination & strength
They need every High school and college kid to watch this video. So they learn the lesson of hard work and how it can payoff.
AMEN!!! Best comment on here!
BS. Most hard workers are still poor AF while doing 3 jobs.
@@andredeketeleastutecomplex even those, who is become master at their speciality?
I was shown this in my home Ed class years ago while I was in Jr. High. Never forgot how it made me feel and to this day I’ll never get sick of watching this on my best days just as on my worst.

This was literally me when someone gave me a super nice compliment when I served to his table. He appreciated the fact that I helped his family out and made sure they got what they needed. He offered me a job and after exchanging phone numbers... He gave me a $50 tip and I thanked him and his family so much. I also said "hope to see you again soon!" I immediately thought of this scene. I have been going through a lot this last month and helped me. I appreciate that fact.
Did you see him again?!
You know an actor/actress transcends their screenplay when you instantly feel the same emotions that are being portrayed on screen. Give this man an oscar already!
Took the words right out my mouth! I felt this seen !
@@CC-zi5fb chris felt that slap too
I go back to this scene often. It reminds me that this world gives opportunity to those that work hard and are honest.
I took my LSAT last Saturday waiting on the results. Hoping to feel like this soon.
If you've ever been down and out, you totally connect with this moment. Best part of the movie.
The part when he runs to hug is boy is what hits me hard!!!! Great movie!!
This was me 2012, taught myself to code..homeless, living with my mom with my 2 kids (1and 2 at the time)...2014 when I got my first developer job with AMC THEATRES. I thought my contract was ending but was hired full-time as a content developer. Went on to start my own business. 150+ websites and 21 mobile apps later...I can never forget how it felt when we moved into our own place and they had their own rooms.
I know that moment myself, after 2 years of applications for a job which I finally got made me cry in joy.
Just don't let anyone tell you that you shouldnt chase your dreams.
"Was it easy as it looked?" You could tell that everyone in that room had to hustle hard to get to the top and now they welcomed another one of them. Such an awesome scene.
Will portrayed so many of us...different situations but same emotions we all had or having in our daily lives...just kicking and going on again..thers a saying Men don't cry...we all do but we don't want our loved ones to see and put a plastic smile on our face even through tough times..just to see our families smile. Brilliant script and a very heartfelt movie.
When his eyes watered up my eayes watered up but when he went outside walking in the crowd amd clapped I fkin cried so hard.Damn!!
I cried when I saw this scene, because I know how it feels when looking for an opportunity and all doors closes in your face, till one finally get the opportunity or the second chance one was looking for, that one shot that will spark the shine out of your being.
Great underrated longtime actor James Karen as the main boss. His delivery and tone was perfect in this scene
I struggled after getting out of the military. I was homeless at one point sleeping in my car with my kids feeling like a failure to them. Luckily I have a great personality and was given a chance by a few people and now I make over 100k+ a year and preparing to buy a house. This was over a span of 6 years but I'm going to be a homeowner this year hopefully before I hit 30 in October. Never give up, keep pushing and applying. People who say can't get a job are lazy. I worked in a Slaughter factory, groundsman for tree cutting company and I did roofing, all those jobs were hard but I did them because I wanted to work. Now I have a much easier job making a lot more money 🥰
Your kids are lucky to have you as their father. Keep it up buddy.
The fact that people like Will Smith hasn't ever won an Oscar shoes how rigged that stuff is. He should have got one for this movie 100%
They gave the Oscar to Forest Whitaker that year, so I don't know how rigged it was exactly.
@@boredom2go Hahaha. Lol. The internet, right?
This is one of the most ignorant comments ive ever seen lol.. first of all the Oscars dont mean shit, its an award show for celebrities and elites to congratulate already famous people for doing their job. Second, there are plenty of amazing actors out there, just because someone doesnt win doesnt mean it was based on their gender or skin color, just means the majority thought one actor performed better.
He will probably win one as a producer one day. Brad Pitt hasn’t won an acting Oscar either. Only a producing Oscar.
@@micahvelli_236 no it’s an award for doing your job extremely well not just doing it
Not only he had the sense of happiness with his new job and all but the feeling he now has of taking care of his son but almost teaching him that not everything is easy in life and that his son will understand that as he gets older
That tears ,glass slipping from hands and that hand shaking while walking..A masterpiece of direction....Only who got something happier while going through hardtimes understand....its a hope that life still has some meaning.❤️
