    Meek mill came from one of the worst and roughest parts of Philadelphia. His father was killed when he was a small boy. His mother had to work and raise a family on her own. He grew up and was beaten by cops then put on probation for 10+ years. He not only is a self made millionaire but he is using his platform to influence change. This man is trying to make a change and I respect that.

      responsibility for your actions.

    The point of Meek Mill speaking up is to promote change and open dialogue. We spend a lot of time discussing our opinions of the messenger and not enough time discussing the message. No one is perfect, and you have a right to agree with or disagree with the message, but be open minded! Disparaging the messenger on their flaws and perceived flaws is a distraction from the message. Judges make judgments, judgements require consideration of the facts and interpretation, which can and will lead to biases. For equality, biases have to be weighed. Thank you Meek Mill for using your platform and showing others your desire for growth.

    This is thought-provoking, for sure. I wish that there had been citations offered (even at the end) for the statistics that were presented. I think we should be wary of an ad hominem logical fallacy; Meek Mill's background may or may not give him more ethos, but it certainly doesn't automatically negate the validity of his argument. I've never thought of the prison system as a modern day interpretation of slavery, but I'm willing to consider this perspective.

    • @MrPhatcat98
      @MrPhatcat98 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Allen Johnson I’m not quite sure what you meant by that, but I don’t believe I stand corrected. Justice is the goal, and I don’t refute the fact that there are, in fact wrongful convictions. Those truly are a tragedy and need to be investigated. Those responsible for them should be punished. Justice is the goal and penalization for crimes is the punishment. The environment that individuals grow up in and reside in can directly affect the exposure to crime and illegal activities. I don’t believe the justice system is perfect because there are still imperfect people involved in it. But I also don’t believe there is a systematic oppression involved in black arrests. I do however believe that it is the mindset of the individuals (despite race) that commit those crimes that is the real issue. We need to teach people that they can exist beyond their circumstances and not conform to the ways of their peers. If you and your friend are committing crimes, it’s likely you will get caught and punished. That’s not dependent on race at all.

    As a middle aged White male with almost ten wrongly accused convictions and over ten years of probation completed I take offense to the issue involving race. If your poor you will end up in a courtroom. If you don't have family or support to defend you,you will lose even if your innocent because your voice is irrelevant. If you admit and plea guilty in a plea bargain which 97% of defendants ultimately do you will be given a lessor sentence but found guilty just the same as if you were convicted after a jury trial,that is why the court makes you waive all your rights during sentencing. Scared of the possibility of prison or getting maxed out during sentencing then you will end up agreeing to a plea bargain. This is how the government saves money and makes money. Your freedom costs alot of money.

He's a great example(among others) of what can be done with hard work, discipline and determination. Hip Hop has come a long way, and maybe that's why the new era isn't looking great in the eyes of some because they might be setting us back. But we have to be patient with the youth as we all have to learn from our actions. Sometimes it's hard to see what's going on with so many lights in your face.
