I just saw Mr. Ritenour live here in Missouri this past Saturday along with my 12-year-old daughter. She is still talking about it.
Saw this same group last night at Jazz Alley in Seattle. So wonderful. What a privilege to be there. Grusin now 88. Great uplifting experience. Such virtuosity! And they were all obviously having so much fun
Brilliant musicians. These guys make life worth living. Uplift the spirit after really testing times. Thank you and 'NEVER SAY DIE'

So, cool. I had heard that Wes had joined his dad's tour, but this is the first time I've heard him play, and he sounds great! Great time, dynamics, very clean, very nice playing style. I've been a fan of Lee's and Dave's since their Roxy, Golden Bear, Baked Potato, etc. days. Amazing musicians, composers, arrangers, and is Melvin a bass god or what? An honor and privilege to hear this level of musicianship from these guys.
Sorry, Wes is overplaying and the groove gets lost quite often.
That drum solo was art, man!!! Beautiful.
How wonderful it must be for a father and son to play this level of music so beautifully together...must be very spiritually/emotionally profound.

Wonderful music from these magicians! Credit to Wes and Melvin for that rhythmic foundation.
I still don't know how these guys remember what to play ....not just keeping one track from another .....but the intricate passages involving melody voicing but then the solo interludes, fills and vamping.....it has got to boggle the old memory and require a lot of mental strength, let alone the physical dexterity associated with musicians in their 60's thru 80's where arthritis and other infirmities are kicking in big time. Kudos to Mr. Lee and Mr. Dave for their continuing proficiency at a delicate stage of life.

@@gohuskies583 That's what I think, too. Listening to the first track "The Village" from the album "Rhythm Sessions" with Dave Weckl drumming on the studio-version, I think Wes is just playing too complicated and trying to show plenties of complicated details, but he is overplaying and the groove is missing. Dave Weckl plays more simple, but the groove is there always. Dave is the master and Wes might leave his ego behind. Since it's a shuffle, my thoughts go back to Jeff Porcaro. Probably Wes could learn a lot from Jeff's philosophy. Wes CAN groove, but when he overplays, the groove gets lost.
I heard Lee Ritenour live with drummers as Alex Acuna and Will Kennedy and enjoyed their drumming sooooooo much ... they always served the band wonderful.

Dip 🤗! Mel D is filling space nicely as a secondary Guitarist pretty well at times , as long as ‘holding down ‘ the bottom edge as well at the same time 🤗👍🏽
So you get a 6-string bass, foot pedal and an amp/speakers that cover a broader audio/sonic spectrum and your convert from "just" a bass player to a lead bass player, synthesizer emulator, and distortion lead guitar or DX7 player.....wow. I used to admire good bass players.....he just raised the bar.

Melvin has recorded with the likes of George Benson, the Pointer Sisters and Gladys Knight. According to Wikipedia, he also co-wrote the theme to Soul Train. He is a highly regarded musician in his own right - perhaps this should be called the Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin and Melvin Lee-Davis Quartet!

Lee’s son, Wes is pretty good too .... A Musical ‘Military Brat’ , so to say 🤗lol😆.... Pop’s been to the musical ‘battle field’ back and forth ... Now got a wonderful offspring carrying on the ‘battle’ 🤗... Slaying all mayhem with groovy sounds of music ... Nice Legacy
(Plus I imagine Wes might have had opportunity to review and study all kinds of the greatest drummers that ever played & recorded with Pops 🤗)

Ugh, you're obviously not old enough to appreciate what's going on....very customary for musicians to open the door, set the table, and stick a golden/silver fork into the mouth of one of their offspring. What it does however is to deprive the audience to the treat of their more experienced, entertaining sidemen that have accompanied the artists over the years. I don't think we've reached the point in supply where we are short of percussionists who are willing to play for Lee, Dave & Melvin. Lee has had a bevy of very fine drummers, and frankly, those guys seemed to be in better synch with the bass player.
@@johnmaer True! Exactly my impression from a gig with this line-up in a different venue. I remember hearing Lee live with Will Kennedy, Alex Acuna and Sony Emory - wonderful drummers. Lee seems less inspired here.

I still remember when Wes was just the little bubba standing next to his pop on the album cover for one of Lee’s past album .... (I think the one he covered some Bob Marley stuff on 🤗)
I like his Jobim covers better. Both are classic Ritenour, however.

How come the audience is sitting on their hands.....why no more than polite applause at best by a segment of the seated? No wonder these smooth jazz guys prefer playing overseas, in the Far Eastern Asian islands and those 3rd world countries. They get better acknowledgement and responsive, with-it behavior in foreign lands......this audience was pathetic....I mean if I were Lee, I would have walked off the friggin stage with his band and told them to stuff it.

That makes at least 2 of we dissenters who agree on your point. Sonny was a great drummer and added so much on his time keeping and interesting fills and syncopation. I don't think Lee's son has all the chops that are acquired over time. Father is giving son a big break....

@@funklover24 I think you may on to it, the problem, the issue, my perception that he/Wesley is not that in synch with his father's music. I don't care for his percussion style.....just don't....Lee has played with so many gifted drummers....so many...and then he has to bring in family....just because of the cute name Wes in tribute to Wes Montgomery....I mean really....unless the kid has got some serious chops and groove on the skins, he needs to go home and be with mommy.....and Lee needs to get serious about who he has keeping time, doing fills, and handling percussion soloing. Wesley ain't the answer.
@@dennylibertario2246 I have spoken to Lee about this after a concert, but he didn't want to hear one word. No chance! The band was exactly this line-up, adult masters and then a young man overplaying instead a focusing on the groove more. And I exactly remember hearing Lee with great drummers as Alex Acuna, Sony Emory or Will Kennedy and I am aware of the difference. To me it disturbed the whole concert.
The first song is the perfect example. The studio-version (on "Rhythm Sessions") is a wonderful shuffle-groove played by Dave Weckl, quite "simple", but amazing GROOVY, Jeff Porcaro would dig it. Wes is just overplaying, but what for? He is kind of soloing all the time ... should do his homework and find out the difference between soloing and accompaigning / serving the band.
@@funklover24 I agree with you 150% of course. You nailed it....he's just trying too hard and he's playing constant fills instead of maintaining a solid backbeat and staying in that pocket. But, as you and I know, it is Lee's gigs and act so he has final word on who his drummer is.....but my problem is that we see too much of this....nepotism, unfair advantages given to blood kin just because they are family. Unless the opportunity is an earned one or based on merit, the family member holds the band position because of family cronyism....and only folks who know music a little can discern how bad the relative is playing. Eddie Van Halen did that with bass guitar...threw out Michael Anthony and replaced him with Wolfgang Van Halen to join with Uncle Alex on drums.....I mean it is disingenuous on a guy like Lee Ritenour's part to play favorites because a lot of the audience is on to the ruse. But....oh well....regrettably, some of his audience/fans know Wesley is a big let-down from those other guys you named.
Compared to other Lee Ritenour live concerts, this one sucks... it all sounds like it was played in slow motion.
Wes Ritenour is good, only that he is to hungry. This youngster playingstyle is to busy to fit in the orchestra in my opinion. Please No offense here cause Wes is a true good drummer in many senses. I rather prefer Harvey in the band

Yeah, I agree totally. He needs to learn some finesse, interpretation and expression. He can’t even create a swing feel which is a fundamental groove in Jazz. Just listen to Stolen Moments, disappointing. He has some learning to do.
