Nice of you to do a programme on Jeffery, I remember him walking on Manningham lane in my childhood in the 60,s when I lived on Victoria street, need to see more on history of Bradford, this our home now.
I worked at Butterfield Signs on Westgate overlooking the junction of Lumb Lane. I used to see 'The mad monk' nearly every week. I regret having never spoken to him. He always wore sandals and a brown robe. He always looked at peace with the world. Dave Wright.
Just came across this video. Thanks for making it - its really interesting. I left Bradford over 50 years ago, but remember seeing Geoffrey when I was a child and was absolutely awestruck - as I really thought he was Jesus. I wonder how old he was when he died. He must have been a good age, and that looked like a tough way to live.
Passed him quite a few times, on the canal bank, going towards Shipley, but I've also seen him in Leeds, Keighley, my God, the man got around, I will miss, dear ol'Geoffrey, you knew, there was, some good in the world, when you saw him, out and about, God bless you, Geoffrey my friend, I will certainly miss you, thanks also, for the great film, my friend, I think we may have Found, Bradfords answer to Stephen speilberg, hehe well done Sir.. 👌👏💯
Thanks for your kind words Mark. I've chatted to Geoffrey Brindley a couple of times in the past and have always been fascinated, which was the driving factor.
The story I heard was that he worked at International Harvesters at 5 Lanes Ends in Idle. He heard the word of God, one night when the factory was struck by lightning. Didn't know the rest, but I remember my Gran telling me and my brother about him. I saw him many times over the last 40 years. Always looked immaculate, and always 20 years younger than the age they gave to him. I hope he found peace
You are absolutely right, he did work for International i’m 64 now and I remember going to Withernsea on holiday and actually seen him in Selby unbelievable Walker , but he was a really nice man my father always spoke fondly about him
Remember him as smiling and waving in his distinctive sandals, brown robe and leather bag no matter what the weather! He used to sit in the old Central Library and read newspapers, I remember chatting to him on few occasions when I used to go there to borrow or return books. He was a lovely man.
As a kid in Bradford during the sixties and seventies I remember Geoff, we always new him as ‘the mad monk’. Great video, thanks. He was a friendly and gentle bloke.
Yes I remember seeing him many times over the years. I once decided to stop and speak to him. I asked him where he lived but he didn’t answer my question. I the asked why he walked everywhere? His reply was simple and gave me an understanding of his life . He said ‘ because Jesus is coming soon’ . He certainly was a witness of kindness with a loving smile and wave which brought joy to the heart. May he rest in peace and be joy filled with his Lord and Saviour. Amen
thanks for your fascinating video, i moved away from bradford to skipton a few years ago, so i'm closer to settle now. i often wondered where the cave was, so thanks for the video, i may visit one day. you just gained a new subscriber too.
Yes I have fond memories of seeing Geoffrey when I was a kid walking around the place smiling and waving to everyone, the people of Bradford took him to their hearts. He taught the Gospel by example, a rare thing I feel.
I had at least four Caves to look at, fortunately the first one was correct. As in the video I was trying to look for similarities between the photo and the cave features but 60 odd years on even those hardened features had slightly changed.
I am 68 years old now at that time l was 8years old and remembered him well passing my school lidget green the children would shout out its Jesus he would indeed wave
I always remember my grandmother who was a nurse at the old TB hospital bierley telling us and Jesus man used to live in the grounds or visit and they'd feed him. In the grounds was a cave he used to sleep in.
My parents used to sell pie and peas from a truck in the early 60s.Every Friday night the would see Geoff going up Halifax road and they always fed him and gave him a couple of pies for his satchel. He told them in winter he slept at the brick works Because the bricks were warm.Brick works were between Shelf and Halifax Far cry from Scar caves in Wharfedale
Another great video. I feel that over the years though there has been a slight "romantizing" of this man, viewed through rose tinted nostalgic glasses. Like many, I also have the memories of us shouting "Jesus!" when he walked by us near our homes as kids, but I also have vivid memories of seeing him behave very erratically in Bradford City Centre, intentionally walking into young teenage girls, brushing himself up against them, frightening them. A character for sure, but I couldn't be convinced it should all be for good reasons.
This is true. Mum went to Catholic school and he’s shout and scream at the girls that they were going to hell, he pushed my colleague into the road instead of asking politely if he could get passed, she had to be helped up off the floor. He’s screamed abuse at friend of mine, hiding their own business, because they were “punk” and he didn’t like the look of them. They were literally smoking. I saw him do this more than once in the city centre. A horrible man with an untreated mental illness who refused help
Very interesting. I remember seeing him walking in various places in Bradford. He always smiled and waved. It was a heck of a trek to that cave. I wonder how he managed to live in there. Must have been very cold.
Remember him well. I would see him in eccleshill in a morning then baildon around dinner and bradford by tea time. He used to get about even in later years
Don't you think it's weird that Bradford has not officially recognised Geoffrey Brindley? They had official murals commissioned and put all round Bradford of a Jamaican that used to feed pigeons, an African footballer, and a Polish homeless women. Then someone put up an unofficial Brindley mural outside the Interchange, which has now been replaced with an official mural of a women. Possibly another Polish homeless women. Everyone except an English White Male. Bit weird.

Well how interesting that this just popped up on my TH-cam. So in the 60s dad got a car. Anyway dad was born in Bradford or Bratford as he pronounced it. His mother was born on Titus street in Saltaire and the family spread into Wrose, Shipley, Bingley and Keighley. I distinctly remember seeing 'Jesus' in the park and was fascinated by his leather sandals. This has brought back some lovely memories for me. I remember the beautiful buildings in Bradford. How very interesting that cave is. Dad lived near the canal and his Grandparents would look after the children from the Barges whilst they were bringing coal from Newcastle I think. Where you are is an interesting part of the country with the caves. A hermit lived in that area many, many years ago. It could even have been that cave. You are braver than me. I would be frightened of falling and not being able to get out. Thank you for remembering Bradford Jesus. 🙏🏼
Geoffrey seems to have been ever present around the streets of Bradford. He was always there with a wave and a smile. I was a student at Bradford Grammar School, it seemed that he was always walking past when we were waiting for the bus Victoria Cave is at least 40 miles from Bradford, so how did he make the trip so far on a regular basis? ..that would be scandalous if Bradford Council wouldn't have buried him and given Geoffrey a grave and headstone. After being such a prominent local figure to the people of Bradford for so many years. Probably known as a Bradfordian, to more of Bradfords people, than the likes of JB Priestley, David Hockney, Frederick Delius, Judi Dench, Brian Blessed, Kiki Dee, Zayn Malik and Dynamo all put together. I do hope that this is not the case, and Bradford Council did pay for him to be buried and receive a grave that can be viewed and visited as a mark of respect.
I am originally from Middlesbrough but I went to Uni in Bradford in the early 70s. It was far enough away from home for the accent to be very different. Like all good Bradford students I developed a taste for curry that has not left me after 35 years in New Zealand. Frequenting the curry shops meant speaking to many people who had only a poor grasp of english and my grasp of their language was much worse. But it was interesting to hear them begin to speak english with a Bradford accent. The reason I mention this is that seeing the man speaking in this video he pbviously has either parents or grand parents who were born in either India or Pakistan or Bangladesh. he speaks with a Bradford accent but I can hear that it is subtly different from the accent I heard in the 70/80s. The way he pronounces "r"s is obviously influenced by his heritage. I would be interested to know if this small change has also passed onto the speakers whose whakapapa (As I say I live in New Zealand and whakapapa is a Māori word meaning family tree) is hundreds of years in West Yorkshire. Language is a very fluid thing
Thanks for the interesting observation, Imtiaz's parents are Pashtoons from the Afghan/Pakistan border - shown in the 1897 lost British Soldiers graveyard be produced. He had an untreated mental illness and was cruel because of it. Thats it.
I used to talk to the street wordens in Bradford, at let me say he was a danger
interesting.
This is Settle, not Bradford
Any signs of Jesus I've heard people say they've been in caves and they seen Jesus
Jesus does not appear in caves
Can't say Jesus has been seen in a Cave
I WALK PAST THE QUEEN EVERY WEEKDAY ON WAY TO WORK - HE HAS DISAPPEARED FROM THE WALL OF QUEEN PUB - THERES NOW A LAS STENCIL - WHAT HAPPENED ?
I believe Landlady classed it as an illegal use of the wall and had the paintimg replaced. The artist Chris Brewster painted Jesus mans head over the face of the replaced painting:

I met the Jesus man a few times. Once as a child, a teenager and then an adult.
