I was born in the state of Michigan over 80 years ago and I go to more places there now with you guys than I did all the time I have lived there ! I have heard of a lot of these places but never been to most of them to visit ! Ishpeming is an Ojibwa name. Also you must have a huge closet to store that HAT collection of yours ! Todays version looked like a nice warm one for sure ! I really liked this video showing me some of Ishpeming ! Keep up the good work , don't give up !
Welcome to Ishpeming, and please come back and visit anytime. I am one of the Assistant Chiefs on the Fire Department. Hopefully you were able to get a pizza at the Congress. My Great Great Grandfather was the founder of the Congress and it stayed in the family until about 15 years ago. The Santa shack was built and is run by one of the firefighters with the city, who also owns a couple businesses in town. That is the second house built, the first one was set on fire a couple years ago. The egg beater is a wind turbine, it was originally built to help provide power for the Highrise apartment complex. The original company sold out and the company that took over had it running a couple times while testing it, I believe that company folded also. It has never been commissioned to run and stands as a weird structure for tourists to ask about.
The name of the elf who wanted to be a dentist was Hermey. I loved that Christmas cartoon as well. My favorite was "Charlie Brown Christmas". Very pretty UP town Ishpeming, thanks Sally and Marty!
Hello Sally and Marty thank you for the nice video that looked like a pretty cold place to be you got to love them old towns you guys have a good one. 🏆👍✌️
Sehr Gut! Enjoyed. So sad to see how communities become when the main industry goes away. Although most of the country is experiencing this. We need to be more diverse and keep an eye on the future.
My Great grandparents lived in Ishpeming when they first came to the states from Finland, the were miners. My grandfather, and his sister and brother were born there. Later they bought property in Crystal Falls. Fun random Fact: 99% of all NBA, NCAA basketball courts come from lumber in the U.P and Northern Wisconsin, and there is a mill just north of Crystal Falls that manufacture them.
Love Hidden Gems!! Have to laugh because we always try to leave before 10am on our trips as well. Love your fur hat! What is on Marty's shirt ( a logo). Your pup Leo acts just like our Beastie ( a Chihuahua mix). Maybe not much snow and blue skies. However looks cold 🥶. Tourist trap and rock shop looks interesting! There some unique products there. Animatronics are fun especially Christmas ones! Ski and snowboard museum is cool! Love your comments on it! Glad you had a quick look in the Hall of Fame. Neat murals! Thanks for pointing out the Cliffs Shaft Mine with the old equipment and buildings. Always find old mines interesting! Barnes Tilcher mine accident us sad. Love seeing the unique homes and church. Pizza places in small towns always seem to be good place to eat. Statue of old Ish is unique. Main Street is definitely unique! City Hall is nice!
Kwik Trip has a mascot called the "Urge". They use to have Tshirts, sweat shirts and other stuff for sale in stores. They still have the coffee cups and soda cups for sale I think. They had a line of bottled soda, they still have chips, popcorn, candy, a dairy and bakery under their label. I do not know if the companies could get along but if Kwik Trip and Culver's opened up next to each other it would help them both. I appreciate you taking the time to make the videos for us. Hope you and Marty stay safe and healthy.
It’s funny. I’ve been stopping at Kwik Trip’s ever since they came into existence (there was even one in my hometown that I used to frequent) and never knew about “Urge.” Maybe they could revisit that. Ya know, come up with a new name… like really, “Urge”?
You two are so fired up about all the places you visit. That’s awesome! You’re so thorough. My daughter lived in Ishpeming. It’s a great little town. Have you listened to Da Yoopers band? Very comical and talented! My family all lives in a couple hours north of there. Have you been? It’s worth the trip! Keep up the interesting tours. It’s great that you’re able to travel all over like you do!
Yep, Ishpeming, gonna check it out on Google earth including Spruce and Ridge Streets. Thanks for the tour you two, I learn some very important stuff here, like don't mess with Leo when he has some yak cheese. 😉👍 Note, 25:36, A vertical axis wind turbine generator. 🤓👍
They probably could find some large eggs up there to beat wuth your egg beater/vertical axus wind turbine. By the way Wisconin is Gods country too from the Horicon marsh. Beautiful fall sunsets on the east side where its hilly to see. Also dont miss views at N. Palmatory st.
Check out the satellite view and you can see the mines south of town (still operating on and off depending on international ore pricing/tariffs). The settling ponds outside the mines are bigger than the town itself.
My boyhood home is in the UP, we had an old wooden ski jump up the hill from my house. Apparently the Swedish/Norwegian folks that settled the area built lots of ski jumps out of wood, after visiting there recently the ski jump is gone now, but it was cool to see that growing up (Stephenson, 1960’s). We would take innertubes sledding down the hill below it. I would be curious if anywhere in the UP someone might have preserved one of those.
Loved this❤ that one building at the end looks like it could have been a firehouse or livery back in the day. Thanks Sally for taking us along on a great adventure oh and I love your doggos!
Loved the video, born in Ishpeming and lived there till 1990 when my dad took a job in the Iron Mountain area, which you passed through in the beginningof video. I don't get back up there often but enjoyed seeing it like a familiar old friend. Also, the house that was used in Anatomy of a Murder was near the library. It used to have a marker, not sure if it still does. 99% sure they also filmed some scenes in the library. Thanks again for the video.❤❤
The movie Anatomy of a Murder was based on a book by Robert Traver. Traver was a pen name for Johnny Voelker. I spent much time in the summer in the '60s in Ishpeming. I met Johnny at the Imperial Bar along with the Ayotte brothers. I did get to trout fish with them, but not at his honey hole. I was back thru Ishpeming in 1996 and a whole new town had built up close to highway. The old town was separate but still held a lot of charm.
I read somewhere that Kwik Trip was founded in Eau Claire Wisconsin, so I think they should have a cute badger for a mascot? You know, since Wisconsin is known as the Badger state. I also grew up in Wisconsin but currently live in Minnesota.
I am a born and raised Yooper. (I am from the Keweenaw Peninsula.) I have driven hundreds of times past the sign for the "Da Yoopers" shop and have never noticed that it was spelled wrong! Maybe it is because we tend to pronounce it Batroom?
Went through Ishpeming a lot on our way to Houghton/ Hancock but never went down town. Very nice, thanks for the walk through. We will definitely stop nest time we are through. Saint Ignace is beautiful in the snow.
Shovel? We don't need no stinkin' shovel!😅 I'm guessing that 'batrooms' is a joke, right? I think that's a reference to the local Finnish accent (general Yooper accent, actually. The name arose because the locals live in the U.P., which morphed into Yoopers being the people of "da U.P.". I just returned from a short visit at Google Translate, and apparently the name "Beatila" is pronounced BE-uh-tea-la. In case you don't know, Ishpeming is from an Ojibwa word meaning above/in the air/on high.
Suicide Hill was legendary... Dad was from Ironwood and knew all about it... Which isn't surprising, because they were ski-jump psychos in Ironwood... i.e. Copper Peak
Kwik Trips have great hot food choices grab & go. I live just South of the Cheddar Curtain and enjoy stopping at one whenever in cheese land. This week went to the one in the Dells, probably the busiest location I’ve ever been to.
Kwik Trip could use a badger holding a snow shovel as their mascot. And if you want a unique VRBO experience , the next town Negaunee has a place called union station which is a converted rail depot into a 2 bedroom rental... it has a huge dining table and it's a really nice conversion..
I totally wish you were coming not that long ago you have visited all of my childhood living areas and you've discovered things that I have never known
I was born in Hancock...PeeWee Herman's favorite town in the UP...just stayed 4 nights at the RV park in Ishpeming. Just picked up some specular hematite in Champion, MI.
I hear ya, Marty 4:38. That's why I'll take $20 and play the penny slots. When its gone, I'm gone and, on the rare occasions I 'do hit', I get the same rush as someone winning far more. People who gamble say, "Easy come, easy go" but I beg to differ: For me it's 'HARD come, easy go'. Meaning it 💸is so hard getting it but so easy to lose!
Kwik star came out with a trucker hat. I think it was a limited thing to see how well it would sell. We have 3 kwik stars in clinton iowa and only the big truck stop one had them.
Does anyone else wonder if the initial name of the city was actually "Shipeming" but, the guy at the sign factory was dyslexic and made the town sign read Ishipeming and since it probably took 6 months to a year for the sign to finally arrive, they just went with the new name? That's my plot twist for the day.
I clicked on this video faster that an email from, Publisher’s Clearing House!”
That’s gotta be a record in itself. Woohoo!!! 🥳
I don't always have something to say on these posts but I do ALWAYS have a smile at the end of your videos.

You’re very welcome! Thanks for filling in the gap of my memory 😜
Hello Sally and Marty thank you for the nice video that looked like a pretty cold place to be you got to love them old towns you guys have a good one. 🏆👍✌️
Thanks Duane! They say you have to be a special kind of person to survive the harsh conditions of da UP.
Sehr Gut! Enjoyed. So sad to see how communities become when the main industry goes away. Although most of the country is experiencing this. We need to be more diverse and keep an eye on the future.
Hey i'm from the midwest really love your show keep up the good work Thanks😊
Hello Sally and Marty from Longview Texas. That place is Too Cold for me. Lol
And me too lol 😂

Robbins flooring mill Ishpeming Michigan.
My great grandfather was also from Finland and lived in that area before getting married and moving to Detroit 😊
Nice video Sally. In all the years I've been going ta da UP, I've never really explored Ishpeming.
Thanks! 😊 It’s a great little town. We didn’t even cover half of it.
Watching this as someone who lives in Ishpeming, I found this to be such a fun video of our little town 😊 come back in the summer! 🌞

Yes, there are definitely some hidden gems in Ishpeming!
Glad you were out in the cold and not me. Today we got our first snow but none stuck☃!
Thanks Bob! I bet you were glad to see it ❄️ go.
I loooove old architecture......good video.....thank you for another one of your "tours"...... bless you

I bet Marty had to walk to school in several feet of snow and, it was uphill, both ways.
Of course he did 😜
“Darn right,” words to live by!
Thanks for the tour of Ishpeming Sally & Marty! Da Yoopers tourist trap looks awesome, I gotta go check it out one day.
For sure! It’s a real hoot.
Yep, Ishpeming, gonna check it out on Google earth including Spruce and Ridge Streets.

To me it looks like an egg beater 😂

Yes, it can be that too, for mighty big eggs ya know.

Never thought id come across a video of where Im from and live. Beautiful video.
Thanks for another cool video 🐾
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching 😊

Go to Niagara, WI in the fall. It is beautiful.

I do like some sightseeing sally.😊

Lol thank you!
Thanks!
You bet! Thank you for your generosity 🙏🏻
Love this production…lovely place..Wisconsin is really nice..
Thanks! Ps. This episode was mostly filmed in Upper Michigan.
Shovel? We don't need no stinkin' shovel!😅

LOVE your hat/headgear! Is that wolf? Husky? (Hopefully not)
Neither. Fake fur all the way lol 😂
We love your hat Sally! Very appropriate for this UP trip.
Yoopers. Love it.

Thanks guys 😁
That hat is lovely ❤, enjoyed the video 😊
Thank you! 😊
I totally wish I knew you were coming
Carnegie would build your town a library but you had to supply the books. Still 1100 libraries across the country is a pretty good legacy.
I was born in Hancock...PeeWee Herman's favorite town in the UP...just stayed 4 nights at the RV park in Ishpeming. Just picked up some specular hematite in Champion, MI.
You missed the Gossard building. Factory where they made undergarments, corsets etc.
We will need to visit next year! Like the UP...
For sure! I highly recommend it.
Thank you again for a great video. You two are fabulous! Bill in Kenosha< Wisconsin.
Our pleasure! Glad you enjoyed this one :) And thank you, Bill.
I googled Buc-ees. Beaver was the grandsons nickname that started the chain and his labs name was Buck.
There are areas in the places you visited where the movie An Anatomy of a Murder, with Jimmie Stewart was filmed.
Yeah, Kwik Trip had a mascot for a while! Basically it was a soda cup with a face - with a constantly wagging tongue, plus appendages. ha
Great show🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you 😊
I've been to that tourist trap....I love the U.P.
Love your hat Sally❤!
Thanks!
I live about 3 miles back deeper in the woods behind the tourist trap.
Nice hat. The "Batroom" is so they don't get "robined".
Hahaha 😂 exactly!
Ha, my town. Gotta love Ish.
Sally. Will you ever adopt another baby Chiweenie female? Mabel was beautiful!
Actually, I think the dentist name was Harvey!
I love you guys you’re doing a great job. Hang in there Marty !!!
😊
Hermey…
How far is it to Wall Drug? A common road sign when I was a youngster, along with Burma Shave signs.
About 890 miles according to Google maps 😜

I missed that. Probably because I was too busy looking for snacks lol 😂
Quik Trips are THE BEST!
Kwik Trip in Wisconsin, LOL.
I believe since Wisconsin is called the "badger state" Kwik Trip could have a friendly badger for it's mascot... Just a thought
Suggest a Roadrunner for QT. That should work.
Was 39° last night here in quartzsite. The money I'm saving in heating bills pays for my trip
one of our fav spots is yooper tourist trap
Chihuahuas are the greatest puppies I got one his name is trucker yes on the truck driver

U forgot to check out the weed dispensary’s though 😎
Love you're hat.🥰
Thank you 🥰
The Leg Lamp is based on that Christmas movie classic.
Yes. Isn’t it called “A Christmas Story”?
❤GREAT CONTENT ❤
Ishpeming was the home of the original "catfish"!
True its on the top of Library hill.
The white house on the left looking up the hill from the library. There is just a glimpse of it.
@@caroleesmith9596 I do believe it is yellow but yes looking up the hill on the left.
Hermee the Elf that wanted to be the dentist.
Yes!!!! That’s it, I remember now!
Grrreat
And firrrrst lol 😂
Is Marty of Finnish heritage? He has that look!! LOL.
If you can handle a U.P winter you can handle anything
I believe it! Folks in the UP are said to be hardier than the rest of us because of their ability to handle the winters.
In Manistique we got 19 inches in 1. Night or worse
The hodag! Let Kwik Trip use a hodag as a mascot.
Mama Mia's has very good Italian food.
all that snow makes me think about going sleding
Sounds fun… as long as there’s a roaring bonfire and hot cocoa involved I’m in!
Don't know about Jack, but if Jill was selling a little happiness, I'd be there in a heartbeat.😊
Big Gus actually runs.
greetings from miami beach
Hellooo Miami Beach 🏖️
The elf’s name was Hermy.
My home town ish
The libraries upper floor is glass with spiral stair case many hours there doing school reports back before the internet
You where not to far from where my Grandma used to live. Baraga, Mi
I think I’ve driven through Baraga 🤔
Good ole Ish, the birth of the term, "catfishing"
Use a jack rabbit for Kwik trip, they're Kwik. 🐇
that elf is hermie!
Hermie rocks!
I think the Badger looks too much like the beaver to be their mascot. Good chance of lawsuits.
Living here for over forty years I recommend living anywhere else in the world. It's nice, but not.
Some brilliant shi@
