    The therapist in I Want to Die But I Want to Eat Tteokbokki also kinda sucked. They literally tell the mc that her anxiety is a burden on others and a lot of times their advice boiled down to “don’t feel that way.” Girl I’d have depression too if that was my therapist

    It's so validating that a bad book gets you into a reading slump too. I tracked my books last year and my worst slumps were after a bad book or a really bad DNF and it sucked. I wanted to read but pushing past the slump is so hard.

      after DNFing a book Im always immediately on the search for another book to sorta fill that craving of actually reading something good.
      but when Ive just finished a good book it's like 'well, nothing will ever be as good as this. everything else seems unappealing now' so I just stop reading for a while

    I think 2023 forced us to not to be completionists anymore... there were so many terrible books that if everytime I went through hell to finish a book just for said book to put me in a reading slump I would probably end up not reading anymore. Before 2023 I used to finish every series I started no matter how bad they were, now I struggle to finish a book? I already get like 3 or 4 "spares" books if I'm in a reading mood just in case the first try is dnf'ed and that's a first in all my life

    • @caricanread

    i honestly kind of wonder how much of i want to die but i want to eat tteokbokki's tone came from the (imo not great) translation choices. i've read quite a few pieces from this translator, and i've always found he makes the english copy seem super abstracted and distant. even if the advice presented isn't that great, maybe at least the characters' voices are a little better when in their original korean?? haven't gotten around to getting a korean copy yet so can't say for sure though.

    • @Mmalusd
      @Mmalusd 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is very true for a lot of media. I live in Brazil, and we had some cases of poorly translated works becoming worse versions of the original. It's a shame, I truly believe translating and adapting is an awesome feat, but I wish more work was put into understanding what is being translated.

    @Sh3rrr 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

    You made your book reviews of the bad books very engaging. I liked Hello Stranger though because the face blindness is relatable for me so I didn't find it that unrealistic how she didn't connect two separate concepts of people at different locations as one (and she recovered from brain damage too). Plus it was interesting to find out how people apparently are supposed to recognise others. There are many changeable things about people, conversation clues and names are the best hints.
    Btw. good tip for DNFing books.

    • @caricanread
      @caricanread  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      i just couldnt get over how her best friend knew that she had facial blindness and constantly kept forgetting or not announcing herself or helping her in any way? like if my friend had an accident and had brain damage from it i would be more aware and concerned. that was so unrealistic to me!

    • @Sh3rrr
      @Sh3rrr 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    bahahahaha its so funny to hear facial blindness being in a book. I have been told I may have it. Im sure it comes out differently in everyone who experiences it but for me its more like not being able to register a familiar face to a stranger's unless there was some impression. for example, i can recognize someone i met with only when he wears a hat because thats how i was introduced to him. its a struggle because people have taken it offensively and i understand why.

    i DNF'd 4 books in '23, one of which was the WORST thing (The Witch & The City by Jake Burnett) the MC was so insufferable i hated her so much. DNF byyye. Of the ones i finished? Rebecca Yarros was my only 1star, had a few 2star, but it was a decent enough year. Biggest disappointment is a toss up between The Lost Witch by Paige Crutcher, Together We Rot by Skyla Arndt, Shadow Coven by S. Isabelle, or Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare (i was promised Adult and was given toddler puts on mommy's makeup and high heels and stomps around the house havin' a tanty!).

    I was also very disappointed in I Want To Die But I Also Want To Eat Tteokbokki because the advice from the therapist was so run of the mill, general life advice than I could give....like, it was advertised as this deep dive into depression and such but mostly they adjusted her dosis and never got actually deep into anything....and I understand not wanting to share everything because as I understand the author shares her own story in the book but with that title I had different expectations.

    The power of DNF-ing a book is so important. There are so many books out there to explore - so if you're not feeling it, just put it down. Maybe it's not for you and not worth your time, or maybe it's just not the right time to read it, so maybe sometime later.

    Also, if you read Manga I have a recommendation for a series. It’s quite long but so good imo. Akatsuki No Yona/Yona of the Dawn (adventure, historical fantasy, romance, action). The first few volumes were turned into a pretty faithful anime adaptation, so if you’re interested you can check it out in that format too 😊 (the main character is very sheltered and in various ways immature in the beginning, but she undergoes a lot of great character development and growth ❤)

    10:09 This is bothering me so much but I'm pretty sure facial blindness wouldn't be an obstacle to being a portrait artist. I'm not 100% sure because I don't have facial blindness, but I am a painter. And the thing about painting portraits is you mostly don't do it from memory, you're probably painting from a reference like having the person as a live model or referencing from a photo. As far as I can tell from what I've heard, people with face blindness can see faces just as well as someone without facial blindness, it's just a problem with recognition of who the face belongs to. The best description I've heard for prosopagnosia, which I heard from a video game so take it with a large grain of salt, is like how each chimpanzee has its own distinct face, but people who aren't familiar with chimpanzees still won't be able to tell them apart. People with facial blindness can't differentiate human faces in the same way the average person couldn't differentiate chimpanzee faces. But although I can't tell chimpanzees' faces apart, I could still do a pretty accurate portrait of a chimpanzee if I had a photo reference of it. Another thing that makes that book really bothersome if its premise was based on a misinterpretation of facial blindness and portrait painting lol

    • @caricanread
      @caricanread  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the way it was described is that she wouldnt be able to capture the emotion of the face that she would want, and that is what makes her portraits so strong and moving. So she can technically draw a face and all the shapes and shading that goes into it but not capturing the essence of her subject (the sparkle in the eye, etc) - but i agree that its not a 100% sell haha

    I read tteokbokki in the Mandarin ver. before the English translation is out. I don't understand the hype either 🤷‍♀️ it's depressing and suffocating from start to end

    same with I want to die but I want to eat tteokboki! I also bought it despite me being more of a kindle girl because the cover was pretty and i loved the title, and people were talking so highly of it I had great expectations for it. It was just plain boring, specially if you've gone to therapy you're not going to get anything from this book at all. I didn't see any growth in the author through the conversations, I didn't like how the the therapist talked to her either... I don't know, it was just awful haha
    also i always tried to finish books as well and that always put me in reading slumps that would last me weeks and months at the time. until a friend told me "life is too short and there's too many books to read to waste our time forcing to finish books we don't like" and since then i've been allowing myself to dnginf books. it was hard at firsts but now i give it a chance until 30% more or less and if i'm not feeling it i just stop reading.

    I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki was one of my most disappointing reads of the year too. Not that it was so awful but it wasn’t terribly compelling and didn’t offer much in the way of insights. It got so many good reviews that I was expecting to be wowed and it just fell flat for me. Fortunately, I did get my copy from the library instead of a bookstore.😅

    Girl i just read the zodiac academy it's literally awful. The magic system is sooo over complicated like why are there elements, houses, and orders?? Also Diego pissed me off, i speak a decent bit of Spanish and that's just not how it sounds. Who tf is just inserting words people don't understand into their sentences? They also never tell us where in Solaris he's from, it's just a ~mirror realm~ so obviously there's spanish speakers 🙄

    I DNF'd 'You People' - Nikita Latwani, just struggled to finish it. It petered out for me 3/4 through.
    I suppose the next lowest with 2** was a Non-fiction audiobook called 'Millions like us: women's lives in the Second World War' - Virginia Nicholson. This wasn't bad, it was informative in regards to women's lives during this time but it was just long and slow to listen to. I'm glad I listened to the audiobook because I don't think I would have finished the book.

    The Book of Form and Emptiness. That book made me so MAD. I understand that (I think) the main character is autistic, and I don't know how difficult emotional regulation can be with people on the spectrum. Still, that kid was an ASSHOLE to his mom, who is also grieving (not a spoiler, it's on the back of the book). It's a soft dnf for me because I love Ruth Ozeki and I want to finish it to see if it's just a me problem but remembering how mean the kid is to his mom makes it hard to pick back up. I would love to hear from people who have read and liked it!

    not me being excited because i saw Modern Divination in the thumbnail and that is one of my biggest dissappoitments too. like WHAT happened in this book? the aesthetic looked so good, i had *hopes*. same goes for Bunny
    also a terrible book with a great pitch: Her Majesty's Royal Coven. it's ripoff Klune and Pratchett, desperately trying to be "woke" but only succeeding in having insufferable heteronormative MCs.
    and it pains me to say it, but my biggest disappoitment (not a bad book, a disappointment) is Immortal Longings. because i LOVE the secret shanghai series and IL was just... okay? not even that good? predictable and boring? i wanted it to be *the* book and it just wasn't.
