Someone on Goodreads described The Will of the Many as something to the effect of 'Red Rising except without Darrow moping over his dead wife every other paragraph' and that made me giggle
@@nospoonfulofmayonnaiseforme that's fair, and I definitely could have phrased my point better. I meant more that I felt it could have been done in potentially a better way, though I don't really know how to articulate what that way would be.
i think part of the reason why "y/n" is so poorly received is that it shoots itself in the foot by tying itself so strongly to k-pop, which has a very specific fan culture, because the book itself is, i think, more general than that. it's much more interested in questioning the nature of obsession and idolization than in k-pop or stan culture specifically. its detachment from reality wouldn't feel as strange if the premise of the book wasn't so (apparently) grounded in a real phenomenon. that said, i really enjoyed my time with it once i let go of that expectation of getting any semblance of connection to real life lmao

You know what Lexi? Fine, fine I’ll read Will of the Many. You’ve convinced me for what I think is the fifth or sixth time this year to finally read a book I’ve been eyeing for weeks. You have convinced me to read "The will of the many"! I have been on the fence because of mixed reviews (+biiig book), but of all the booktubers I follow, my taste seems to align the most with yours, so I'll give it a go! I also have just chosen "The office of historical corrections" as the next book for my book club after your recommendation, looking forward to reading it!
its been a long time since i've followed a booktuber who makes me feel actually excited to read again but ive gotta say these vids make me want to inhale my tbr like some freakish kirby reincarnate
My girlfriend and I listened to an audio book of Y/N while taking a day trip to San Francisco. Let me tell you the amount of times we had to stop, pause, "What the hell is this", and keep going was too much. Once it was done we just sat in silence because good lord... Y/N was a car crash you could NEVER look away from. Now, my girlfriend and I do want to teach Y/N because of the occasional bars with the bonkers crazy shit that happens.

I'm completely in love with Y/N. The writing is beautiful and the specific thing the author reaches with the protagonist's psychology is just perfect. I am Esther Yi's target audience and I'm quite proud.
Y/N was truly a trip and I agree with your review that it wasn't fully realized so I was pretty disappointed in the book. I'm so glad you brought up the cuticle scene because wtf was that 💀 if you want something else about fandom culture, Idol Burning by Rin Usami was pretty good despite getting mid reviews.
