    I'm a licensed nail tech who work in a high end salon. And let me tell you...darling, you experienced top notch service. I was wowed. The only thing I have issues with is the plastic waste. Not that what I do is better but using glass instead of all the plastic is so much more cost effective and environment friendly. But on the other hand you have to think about the added process and cost to clean and disinfect, I digress. I kinda want hit on your crooked toe nail. Yeah she cut it crooked because the last person cut it crooked and there wasnt enough new growth to cut it straight. Let it grow out and your problem will be solved. Lastly, I dont know how you set there and let other people service you. I get antsy and constantly question if their tools were properly cleansed and disinfected. Unfortunately, allowing other people do my nails is not a relaxing experience for me 😭😭😭😭 It's more relaxing when I do it, although it takes forever 🤦🏾‍♀️.

      you are exactly right on your last point. getting a manicure/pedicure is NOT relaxing once you're a licensed nail tech because you can see all the things they're doing wrong. All my friends love going to the nail salon and they cant understand why I hate it so much. I'd much rather do it right myself than pay money to get it done badly and risk an infection

      Alisia Lopez The way we are treating our planet, it's sad to say but it's the truth. Many sea animals are in danger some more then others because they're on the verge of becoming extinct. There is one specific kind of sea turtles (sorry can't remember what kind of sea turtle it is) that is almost to the point of becoming extinct. It's sad to see how our waste ends up in their homes (beaches, sea, etc) and how it is effecting them. But hopefully we can change it and make it better for them and for ourselves and our future generations.

    • @babygirladdy
      @babygirladdy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      She's saying that because her nail was cut to look like its going the exact opposite angle her toe & nail are naturally in. If you pause it ( 13:02 ) you can see as much - looks like they gauged it by the cuticle & tried to correct the angle it naturally grows in, but it doesnt match the line of her toe ending. It stands out drastically when they're painted - look at how much skin is showing on both sides between her nail ending & her toe ending. Compare it to the other one. Its noticably uneven. Thats probably what she means & when she does her own, she likely evens that out & just shapes the sides to adjust for the angle it grows in rather than the tips.

      I think it's funny and ironic a nailtech/pedicurist (is that a word?) has such fugly, messed up toes. I know she can't help the way her toes are shaped, but yikes.

    • @NotAnotherKuromi
      @NotAnotherKuromi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I think you misunderstand, she means the horizontal tip/end, not the sides. So no a podiatrist would agree that someone cut the end of her nail crooked.
      You can see that the tip/end of her left big toe nail is parallel to her cuticle but on her right nail the tip/end is not parallel to her cuticle but slanted.

      Idk, as a dental professional, we use just as much plastic per patient. Would you prefer less plastic or more sanitary conditions? Some things are reusable, or decomposable, but the majority of the products are contaminated. At the nail salon you could technically ask if you could take the file and pumice home and reuse them a few times.

    • @TheLaurelbug
      @TheLaurelbug 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Ali-pb6jb I dont know why you have to respond so aggressively. It was an honest question. No, teeth and toes arent entirely comparable, but both can cause serious issues if your products arent properly sterilized. I agree that much of the products should be reusable and sterilized, but a lot of nail salons dont have the money to/dont want to/are taught to sterilize everything. The tub should definitely be lined in plastic because its difficult to clean the jets. Plastic gloves are needed for the manicurists safety. if you want sterilised instruments, theyre always going to come in plastic just to be thrown away. they have to reach a certain pressure, heat, and steam level to reach sterilisation that cant be reached without those pouches.

      Marley Anderson it basically is impossible considering businesses exist to make a profit. To be more sanitary, they need to go through more materials. To have less waste, they would need to sacrifice some cleanliness. Just the way it works since it isn’t necessarily cost-effective to do it any other way

      Jenna Fery actually, some other nail techs have commented here noting that they use glass materials which they disinfect after each use. It is an investment for sure, however with a high end salon, the turnover is high enough that they can still make very good revenue. I do understand how much more convenient plastic is. And for a small up and coming salon it is certainly more affordable, but we do live in an age where there doesn’t have to be a big revenue trade off to be both sanitary and reduce waste.

  • @rebeccamartin1858
    @rebeccamartin1858 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Those disposable plastic cups could easily be replaced with reusable plastic or glass that is super fast and easy to wash and since those containers are not touching clients they would not need to go in the sterilizer.
    In regards to the plastic wrap on things like the timer, the same thing is done by many tattoo artists. Often their hands may be wet when going from foot to timer so that not only keeps the timer clean, but it prevents water damage. The waste associated with frequent replacing the whole timer is a lot worse than the small amount of plastic wrap. I personally avoid plastic waste as much as possible but there are certain situations that for many reasons, single is plastics are necessary.
    If you go to a place like this you can simply say "I'll use my own timer (like on your phone) or ask management to consider less single use plastic.

    • @KateandBree
      @KateandBree 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Danielle Lathan Technically, they would need to be washed and sterilized. A technician’s hands is going into the container and going onto a client’s foot or hand. Would you want that on your feet after knowing that?
      Plastic cannot be fully sterilized and glass requires a special sterilizer if you aren’t going to use a sink with the required heated water. Even then, it doesn’t kill all bacteria and viruses. For people with compromised immune systems (for those who do choose to get a pedi or mani), that’s not a good thing. That’s gambling with their lives.

    You mentioned a few times that you don't know if the tools are disinfected or sterilized and an easy way to check if the tools are coming in those sterile packs is to check for a colored window near the edge of the package. Some manufacturers may put it at any spot at the edge of the package but most have it at the top right. It's a sterilization indicator that will turn a different color from the rest of the packaging when it comes in contact with steam, which is the most common method of sterilization. If you can't see a window of differently colored packaging, then it most likely wasn't put through an autoclave and sterilized.

    • @kathykov1
      @kathykov1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      absolutely! But you also can't even be assured that these have been properly disinfected just because they're in the sterilization packs.

    Love your videos! As a nail tech. My favorite things about where I work is that I have Pipeless pedicure stations. Therefore no bacteria can be stuck in the pipes. Second we all have disinfectant tool boxes, where our tools are placed on top and disinfectant solution is poured under. So when closed our tools get fully submerged and disinfected in between clients. Also they do sell nail files and foot files that can be disinfected in solution. Scrub and lotion are used with pumps, and when applying mask we have very small wooden sticks that are used to scoop product out(flip stick for each foot when I go in for more). Being sanitary doesn’t always have to be harmful to the environment. Yes prices will be higher but it’s worth it, full communication with your nail tech is a must. Trust me people it’s worth it! I would never risk myself for cheaper prices. Bacteria and infections are not for me😬

    Good to know you had a good experience! It's refreshing to see a salon doing what they're supposed to. & theirs nothing wrong with wanting straight nails. That's pretty basic & a must. Looks like they didn't cap your toenails good at all. That's a must with me!! It's a shame for such a nice salon. If you go back, have someone different do your nails. Thanks!👍

    You can usually tell when something is sterilized by looking at the pouch. If there is a dot at the top that is grey, it's properly sterilized, if it's a blue-ish color (same color as the blue of the pouch), it wasn't sterilized. Not all sterilization pouches come with this, but many do.

    I just found these and love your videos! I would LOVE to see:
    - a DIY mani and/or pedi video
    - a makeup and/or hair tutorial
    - a 4 or 5 star salon mani video
    Also, on your 4/5 star videos maybe do another one that's not in a brand new salon. Go to a 4/5 star rated salon that's been there awhile and see if they really keep up their practices.
    Love the videos, glad I found them!

    What about going to a 5 star salon for a manicure like the part 2 that was done for the 1 Star series? I like that you know more about what’s going on there than the average person since you’re in the industry yourself. I learned a lot for when I go to a salon that I would not have thought to look for so it’s very informative as well as being fun to watch.

    I live in the same metro area as this salon so I popped over to Yelp - yes, found those reviews that you read - and wow, this place now has a lot of negative reviews. I considered going there about a month ago but decided not to simply because I don't want to run the risk of liking a place far from home. Lots of salons in my burb. My favorite is next to pizza place so it always smells delicious.

But I always loved to do nails so I don’t mind doing my toe nails, so I never go back to nail salons for pedi lol I wanna see how to home pedi vid! FYI in the state of TX per state laws:
    1. Only properly licensed massage therapist can claim/offer ‘reflexology’ massaging.
    2. Only licensed massage therapist can massage past arms/legs limbs. (This means nail techs are not allowed by state law to massage past knees or elbows!)

    I have been to a salon similar to this. I honestly thought they were throwing all the plastic out too until I asked and the lady laugh and said no. She had a trash can with 2 bags in it. On one side the file and stone to be trash and the plastic cups on the other to be recycled. I didn't even see it until she pointed it out.

    New here so not sure if you have talked about this before but how much should be tipped for nail service? I get a gel glitter pedi every 2 months or so and it's about $85 including tip, which is like 15% or 18% can't remember

    • @JeniaonFilm
      @JeniaonFilm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there! That's a good question. In my opinion a tip is purely based off of your experience. Are you pleased with the outcome of your service? Was you tech attentive and listened to you if you had anything to say? Would you return? All these things effect the tip, it's not just oh $5 or 15% It's whatever you feel the tech deserves. My first ever tip was $1 and I was THRILLED cause well it was my first ever tip in this industry. LOL But now I'd think oh crap did I do something wrong. See what I mean though? So don't over think it friend :)

      @DenGirl12 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tipped my CND tech/friend $8-$10 for a fill but she was only charging me $27 for acrylic and gel polish. Since she’s retired, I usually tip about $5 for a $35-$40 fill. She was WAAAAYYYY better than any regular salon. Super clean, by appt only, thorough. I miss her.

    The best mani/pedi I ever got was in Benin, West Africa. I was interning with a local NGO and we decided to take a weekend off in and AirBnB in the capital, and we went to an absolutely adorable spa and it was incredibleeeee! I went to a place where each person has a pencil box of tools. He literally went from one person to the next and never cleaned the tools at all. Straight from my toes to the box to the next person. The worst part is that he cut me and put the tool back in the box and didn’t sanitize. What if I had some disease?! Is this a usual practice or am I being over clean?

  • @melissaGheee

    • @MermaidAiera
      @MermaidAiera 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I thought the same thing!! It's such a shame that the 'easiest' way to sanitize things is to just throw everything away >> I wonder how much trash is generated from just ONE day of business at this place. What a waste.

    • @melanopygus
      @melanopygus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    • @YoSoFunnyx3
      @YoSoFunnyx3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@melanopygus There are things you can't sanitize like the stones, nail files, etc.Even metal files can't be 100% sanitized and a lot of states don't allow re usage of them. It's not about needing extra time, they just can't. People can lose their businesses and jobs if they do that never mind spread diseases.

The pedicure was nice... i have nothing to compare it to since it was my first time, but i noticed she used this big purple heel grader and right after she used it she went to the sink rinsed it off and put it pack on her shelf. she was really harsh on my feet...had no plastic liner in the tub is that normal? I got ni foot message it was done so quick I honestly would not pay 40$ Canadian again for that!

      This is a pretty common practice with nail techs that work inside a hair salon. When I did cosmtology school our instructor actually encouraged us to bring our own tools and to find one person you trust who follows all sanitary procedures and stick with them. It keeps things sanitary and eliminates the need for single use plastics

      I've been to salons that have little plastic boxes for people. For anything that cannot be autoclaved or sanitized, you put those items (files, buffers, etc) in a box, label it with your name, and those items are YOURS. They are only used on you when you return. Obviously not going to work well for high-volume places.

    Some salons that use the sterile bag have unsanitized tools. Not naming any but I had to leave one of the salons I worked at. I work for myself and although I don't use the baggies, I sterilize my tools per my state board requirements. I dont pick up tools off floor to reuse and don't reuse dusters and bits. Consumer beware.
