Hi everyone! I just wanted to sneak down in the comments of this video and have a little chat. I'm here to publicly apologize to anyone who watched this video and is offended by my poor choice in the use of the word "ghetto". To be truthful, I did not fully grasp how insulting the word would be to so many. My intentions were never to be or sound hurtful to any race or religion of any kind. The word was used in context being that the establishment was filthy, disorderly, and overall just sloppy. Yes, I should be more aware in my use of the word, and moving forward I will definitely choose against it. But like I said, I didn't mean it to be malicious or ignorant sounding. I truly am very sorry and hope those who read this see my genuineness, and can find a way to forgive me. I have also noticed a few people out there debating about this topic and ultimately being rude, and calling one another awful names. I know we don't live in a perfect world (we all wish right?!) but the internet is a ruthless place. No one is accountable for anything through the cyber world. There is no face to face conversations justifying anything anyone says. So people can say anything (being nice or hurtful) and simply log off and not be mindful of how their words can affect someone else. (My mistake in this video is a perfect example) So with that being said (do the opposite of Nike's slogan) and just DON'T DO IT. In the kind words of Thumper from Bambi, "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all." Let's all try to be kind to one another. TH-cam comments are in a way freedom of speech, meaning you can say whatever you like, but that doesn't mean what you're saying is right. (Once again my choice of words as an example lol) Lastly, there was one small topic I just wanted to briefly bring up. Majority of you viewers do not know me personally. You have no idea who may family is, where we come from, how I grew up, nothing. So, just because my skin is fair does not classify me as a "white girl" "preppy white girl" or "white people" My biological father came to the United States as a young child with absolutely nothing in his hands. His history is apart of mine and I PROUDLY identify as a biracial American woman from two amazing loving families of two different cultures and traditions. Again, I greatly apologize for having offended anyone. At the end of the day we are all human. We make mistakes, we each have different experiences and upbringings in life. My amazing mother has always said this world is harsh and painful, but we should be embracing one another instead of continuing to divide ourselves and bring one another down. For those who choose to continue to watch and support my channel...thank you, I love you, and I look forward to growing a special friendship with you. See you all next week 💖
Good job. I just watched your video and learned a lot. I've gotten a fungus infection from a pedicure so I feel people need to be more aware. I was going to leave a comment to gently explain to you the history of the word but you have already learned it and there's no need to say anything more except that I appreciate the fact that you came out and apologized and explained that you didn't know. Now you do, and you'll do better. Sometimes we hear words and assume we understand how they're used, but sometimes that can have painful results. I also learned this word the hard way. Good luck to you!
That shit ghetto hence the use of the word ghetto. Love the video..left a comment on your worst pedi video could you please go there n take a look. I was very surprised at how it actually should be.
I worked in a 97% rated salon and honestly I would have rated it 50% or less. We weren’t provided with any disinfecting solution and the uv sterilizer was broken. I had to bring my own barbicide for my own tools.
Of all the 1 star nail review videos this one should have wayyyy more views. You are actually licensed and are able to point out clear violations whereas most youtubers simply say "the salon was dirty" and "my nail is crooked." I actually learned a lot from this video!
I don’t really like the idea that “you get what you pay for” when paying $25 for a gel mani. No one deserves to get a possible infection or permanent damage to their nail no matter how much they pay :/
She doesnt mean it that way, she means you pay for quality service, quality products and service. If you dont pay much then youre getting lesser quality products, poorer service and possibly unqualified techs. She wasn't implying that anyone deserves a nail infection at all. Isn't it better to save up some money, get a proper nail tech to do your nails which will not only last longer but will be done safely. The price of a set of nails is so carefully calculated to incorporate all the above. I know which I'd prefer.
The whole place was ghetto AF. No one black was there, so why are people offended. These days, Ghetto means low class and that's how those people acted. Nasty as hell to use used tools on a client. Dusty ass place. They need the health dept called on them.
The term 'ghetto' is used to describe poor communities that are populated by blacks and other minorities. There are better adjectives you can use that aren't classist/racist to describe things you don't like. Do better.
@@cuteinthefacethickinthewai5473 while thats true, its also true that lots of words have different uses. here ghetto was used as a descriptive word and maybe its me but ion rly see how thats an issue man
Also! I’d love to see a video where you confront people. Like if they pull out a dirty buffer, ask for a clean one. Or how she pulled tools from the soiled bin, ask for clean ones. Etc. I’m gonna start looking for this from now on, cause you’re right. People who don’t know the laws or understand those things pay it absolutely no mind.
Savannahep why would she not ask for new, clean instruments? She's a pro so she should know the risks, how are views on TH-cam worth potentially getting an infection? Besides she'd still get same views if she'd asked for new or sanitized instruments. Kinda dumb, imo
She probably wants to see how they would treat a normal non educated client and knows if she speaks up they might start treating her different than normal and she wouldn't be able to honestly warn people
I don’t mean for this to be rude or anything but she didn’t use it the right way because “ghetto” is not an adjective, yet she was using it as one. I’m not saying that it was offensive but just how she said it is not grammatically correct. 😁
Splotchy Spraytan Sally it has more than one definition. On Dictionary.com there are six definitions and two are adjectives. “Slang : Often Disparaging and Offensive . noting something that is considered to be “unrefined, low-class, cheap, or inferior: Her furniture is so ghetto!” But aren’t you so smart and special, you just care so much about grammar that you completely ignore other definitions and the fact that the way people speak naturally isn’t completely grammatically correct.
The term 'ghetto' has been used to describe poor communities that are populated by blacks and other minorities. There are better adjectives you can use that aren't classist/racist to describe things you don't like. Do better.
She’s allowed to say ghetto it has NOTHING to do with race it’s a word that describes bad conditions and things like that. Yo I’ve never gotten over 10 likes😭thank you for everybody who is agreeing with my it’s been a month and y’all still replying lmao🤧
She just doesn't appear to have any experience with ghetto so it rubs coming out of her mouth. Words more indigenous to her appearance most likely lifestyle which would be Jerry-rigged, MacGyvered, or maybe low-budget but yes you're right ghetto is not about race.
This is why I will NEVER cheat on my nail girl. As a cosmetologist in CA I’m all about sanitation as well. She’s incredible and has her own little nail studio. Very clean and has actually helped me grow my natural nails with just hard gel so for the past 4 years everyone asks where I get my acrylics and I say “oooh girl these are my real nails!”
I’ve noticed all the comments are about her using ghetto. I would like to address this because it’s kinda annoying. The noun and adjective mean two different things... Noun - an impoverished, neglected, or otherwise disadvantaged residential area of a city, usually troubled by a disproportionately large amount of crime Adjective - jury-rigged, improvised, or home-made (usually with extremely cheap or sub-standard components) Just like how rank means two different things Noun - a position in the hierarchy of the armed forces Adjective - (especially of air or water) having a foul or offensive smell. Thank you for coming to my tedtalk on parts of speech.
ghetto being used as an adjective is completely based upon the social idea that real ghettos are jury-rigged, improvised, home-made, extremely cheap, or sub-standard. where do you think the adjective came from. she should've avoided using such a ignorant word, regardless of what her intention was. your little replies to everyone complaining about it makes you look just as ignorant as she is. it doesn't take a lot of effort to avoid using a singular word, there are multiple other words she could've used (trashy, gross, etc). it's not your place to tell other people they shouldn't feel hurt or uncomfortable, regardless if her intention was using it as an adjective.
Falyne Driver it’s not anyone place to complain how she uses it. It’s like saying how the root of a word is offensive to a group of people therefore NO ONE ever can use it, except the ones that it affects. The word is a word, it’s a part of the English language now, it’s a descriptor. It’s just like saying something is trashy, but if someone said, “I’m black and someone’s called me trashy at some point so now it’s a racist slur and no one can say it”. And also it’s a fact ghettos were typically poorly made that’s why they were described as ghettos. I’m sorry people are getting so butthurt over a fucking word. Something to add on: the word ghetto literally comes from the Italian word borghetto (“little town”). So now if anyone says little town we all have to weep
NeeYoDeeO if you don’t care and are an inconsiderate person who doesn’t understand how to be decent to others, that’s your choice. if you’d like to have such a linear view of the world, that’s your choice. but she obviously understands she made a mistake and genuinely apologized for it, as seen a couple hours ago. (which i didn’t see until now) maybe you should take a page out of her book and learn how to be a considerate person who grows and learns from their mistakes. I hope you have a nice day.
NeeYoDeeO “the word is a word, it’s a part of the English language now, it’s a descriptor” - shut the fuck up. You sound like a whitey itching to say the n word. I bet you justify the use of that word too base off your tasteless and bigoted response lmao.
@@falynedriver832 you are right! lets just censor everything that offends people, why bother educating people that that one word can be used in many different situations, meaning something different, a words intent changes its meaning, and clearly it was not meant on a derogatory term in this video.
Grumpy Pentagon i doubt it. Sanitation is super important, someone could come in with AIDS or something and get cut and where they don’t clean their stuff before using it on other people, if she was to get cut then she could get infected. Regardless of if a manicure is $20 or not they should still be clean. It legit takes 10 mins to properly disinfect your stuff so they would have time between clients to do that. & even if someone came in I’m sure they wouldn’t mind waiting for clean tools & a clean station.
elpida komianou I mean, hepatitis can only be spread through eating, sexual intercourse and blood 🤔 I get tools might be unhygienic but a tool having ALIVE BLOOD CELLS on someone’s open WOUND sounds kinda improbable
I once went to a salon where she made the side of my finger bleed with the side of a file because it was sharp. There was blood over the file. She just out that same file back in her drawer afterwards! For all I know she does that with everyone!!
@@maferalvarado8308 Every single time I've gotten my cuticles cut, they've made me bleed. I, too, have been cut with a file. Which sucked in particular since it was a manicure for my wedding. :\
They break the cap and don't prime right, so you'll come back and spend more money. When you go back they'll tell you the primer costs more because its an extra step or extra product. They'll tell you you did something wrong to cause the chipping or pealing. I'm glad you did these 2 videos on proper laws and regulations for sanitary conditions for clients. Maybe if more people were more mindful of the conditions they're exposing themselves to, less of these chop shops will exist. It makes it so hard for creditable shops to make a good name for themselves. People need to remember you get what you pay for.
Rande Thorman I am a licensed nail tech and so I see both sides of the argument. Unfortunately, I think part of it is just that some nail techs are just not as experienced because new products are developed. Obviously there is some trial and error but a lot of people do not educate themselves when these products have been updated. As a result, a lot of people don’t put a primer because they believed that the base coat was a primer. With the breaking of the cap, I don’t think that they were intentionally doing it but were only meaning well. I have gone places to get my nails done and people do this because they are trying to even out their paint job so that the gel doesn’t stick on the cuticles and skin around your fingers. So mostly I think it’s due to these people not being up to date with what they should and shouldn’t do.
@@anntran1970 I'm not a licensed nail tech, but I am a licensed cosmetologist. I know of several shops in my area that I'm truly shocked they're still in operation. Nail fungus out breaks, infection outbreaks, unsanitary conditions, improper licensing, fake/counterfeit licenses, improper application, charging double for the same product just because they have different names, shops still using MMA, list goes on and on. Its scary. I personally got a nail fungus from a shop when I was 18 before I became licensed.
And I know exactly what you mean. I have a lot of customers that come to me and tell me horror stories about previous places but yes it is rare to find places that will keep up to health codes and be cheap while still offering good service unfortunately.
@@anntran1970 That's why I went into Cosmetology so I can do nails and hair. I want to help educate my clients between the difference in good and not good. I don't want to see people go through what I did.
Look, y’all mad for the wrong reasons. Shes using ghetto as an adjective to describe something that well, is truly ghetto. Its ghetto, ratchet, poor, jury-rigged, improvised. Ghetto is a word used to describe more than a slummed and segregated area. Its truly an adjective, and has been one since the 90s. Look. I grew up in a worse than ghetto area, the colonias of Texas. Honestly to hear Jenia say “ghetto” with her California accent was very humbling and I thought it was cute. I cringed, but overall I think its cute
Its not cute, im sorry you lived in the colonias of texas ik iys really bad but cali is ghetto asf like theres no denying it 😂 i lived in LA all my life an have been in 3 shooting starting at the age of 6 and have seen innocent kids killed
@@prisilas2125 When I was little I lived in East LA and I was in my house when some gang members started shooting at my apartment complex. I can vividly remember my mom tackling me to the floor. It hurt like a bitch but my mom saved my life.
The term 'ghetto' was a term used to describe poor communities that are populated by blacks and other minorities for the sake of being offensive. Way before the 90's youngin. There are better adjectives you can use that aren't classist/racist to describe things you don't like. Do better.
@@cuteinthefacethickinthewai5473 You are dumb as fuck if you think the word ghetto is racist.. Especially if you think it's racist to black people. That word came from Italy to describe Jews that lived in poor areas in Venice.
i'll never understand, why people who make this kind of videos, NEVER reveal the name of the salon. if they're working without following along the laws of this job, they need to be shut down asap. i'd just call them out but that's just my opinion i guess🤦♀️🤷♀️
Julia Egly I could be wrong but i thought i heard that there’s like laws against saying the name or whatever lol i’m not sure so someone can correct me 🤣
I think there’s laws against slandering someone’s name over false claims, but if it’s true, I don’t think there’s anything anyone can do abt it. I remember hearing something abt that in my college classes, but I may be wrong too 😂
It may also be a case of privacy for the TH-camr as well. It gives a better idea of an area in which this person lives, and they would likely like some more privacy.
Second video I’m watching of yours! I just finished your pedicure nail salon experience literally right before you posted this one and was so happy I didn’t have to wait! New subscriber for sure
Same here!!! I just had to check this one out after watching her pedi video. I wish I had found her video's sooner because I thought the salon I go to was doing things right and I had nothing to worry about as far as everything being good on the sanitary end of things. I WAS WRONG!!! I'll be searching for a legit salon I can trust now that I'm a lil more "schooled" on things! Great videos! Looking forward to seeing more. ☺️
I once went to a nail salon in Richmond Virginia and the woman doing my nails took the debris brush from the station next to her, used the brush part to kill a moth on the wall, and put it back like nothing happened.
beaglezip I don’t remember the name of it, but it was in the strip on Staples Mill that has the Target and Bruster’s. It’s been many, many years now, but me, my mom, and my sister all got infections.
I'm a cosmetology student in Indiana, can confirm. I've heard it from multiple people, instructors included. And looking at local salons, it checks out.
Can confirm in Oregon. Only 6 inspectors for the whole state. And the board is funded from the governor's pocket, not the state. Think of that what you will
My favorite part about going to salons like this is dropping the bomb that I am a nail tech then they change how they do my nails and look like they just 💩 their pants.
@@Stuck_on_pause Some people think a license is next to godliness🙄.. I'm licensed and never bring it up.But then I'm with you! Why put yourself in that position..
I hate it when the nail techs try to talk you out of something you want. I recently had a lady add pink after I flat out said I like white only better. To her credit, it _did_ turn out prettier than I expected but you just shouldn't do that to customers who are paying you 30+ bucks, or at all, since you're the customer. I hope these people breaking the law regarding sanitary issues get reported. P.S. All these babies crying over your use of the word "ghetto" need safety pins. SMH.
I used to go to a nail salon that was near my moms flower shop, and they were amazing! They had boxes for each customer/returning customer so everyone had their own set of files and buffers that was for them and them only. I don't think they're in business anymore but I always loved going to them.
Alexis Scoggins well that’s stupid and unsanitary as well. Every costumer should get new set of file and buffer every 👏🏼 single 👏🏼 time 👏🏼 I just can imagine how bacteria is multiplying in those boxes 💁🏼♀️ I just can’t imagine doing that especially when those stuff are cheap 💅🏼
You should do a video going to a best rated salon or boujee one in your area, and see if they follow the rules 🧐 also realized while watching this that the salons I’ve gone to totally have used worn out used files on me🤦🏻♀️ Ew! Thanks for te information now i know what things to look out for!!
Um I had no idea any of this shit. I have gone tons of places and never seem a pedicure tub cover. Thank you for sharing this. I should have done some flipping research I only heard about bad stuff from those one electric things to get the corns or w.e off. So I steered clear. I'm lucky nothing has happened yet. I like that this is informative and not just a bunch of whining.
@@SimmSumm I guess it also has to do with where you are from. I've never heard someone use it relating to skin colour. I usually hear it used in the context of run down, poor, etc. So maybe that is how she has heard the word used. I don't think she meant it in an offensive way.
@@stephanieemmiline1030 because it is, its a slang term. she did not use it with any other intent, and no it's not just catered to black people, and no it's not offensive, because she did not use it as a derogatory term
sis you don't have to be black to be ghetto. clearly she wasn't talking about anyone black cause the nail techs were asian. she's using it in a sense that they are overly cheap and cutting circles to be cheaper
Totally agree with you! Why risk anyone else's health?! I've gotten my nails done a total of 6 times in my life. Four out of the six times, I got nail infections after; and yes that's painful! If your not going to out them publicly I get it But at least please report them privately!
This is pretty standard for all of the generic "angel nails" "star nails" etc type places I've ever seen. I go to an actual spa to get my pedicures (they have a separate portable tub which is sanitized every time it is used as are the metal implements they use) instead of being in a row with like 20 other people and loud television on... for 10$ more I am in my own private room with a glass of sangria and relaxing ambient music. Worth the 10$.
The Megan Experience Wow, I never even knew that was an option lol I thought these nail salons were it, like where else am I supposed to get them done if not at the nail salon? 😂
@@gabyparra8199 Look for either a spa, or a nail tech that has their own business. A good portion of educated nail techs (myself included) either work out of their homes or are mobile, and will come to you.
I'm so glad u commented and said this! I've not gotten Mani/pedis for very long and I was wondering why some of these places were referred to as "spas" when I've been told about them. Sure don't seem like a spa to me! U described the place I've been goin from the start......loud TV & 20+ chairs lined up. Not relaxing AT ALL to say the least. I'll be searching for an ACTUAL SPA now that I read ur comment. When I have time for ME, I want it to be calming and leave feeling pampered instead of robbed considering I pay WAY HIGHER PRICES than are mentioned in the video. Could be the area I'm in but I doubt it considering I live in WV!! 😂 I've been getting ripped off big time!!! Lol
I have no idea how I got to your videos but you popped up on my recs and here I am now. But I've decided to stick around, so I hope you don't mind 1 (one) whole nerd in your subs! Ey, thanks for liking!
we need nail technicians like you everywhere. you know sanitation, and you actually care about your customer. you seem super sweet and that you’d actually talk and try to bond with the customer. people like that make me comfortable and want to come back!
I’m a nail tech in Texas. I once worked at a chop shop where the boss just rinsed off the tools in water, then placed them in the autoclave. The autoclave was never turn on! She just put them there so customers would see them coming out and think they were clean. I walked out after working for a day and a half. I also wanted to comment on what you said on gels needing a primer. Not all brands need a primer. Where I work now, we use Bioseaweed Gel. Loooooooove it! Primer isn’t needed. Most of my regulars get gel and it’ll last anywhere from 2 weeks to 3. And with out a primer. In fact, I got mad at a coworker of mine for using a primer. She is having issues with hers staying (she’s been applying too thick) and when ever one of her guests comes to see me for a removal, it takes forever to come off. I usually have to file it off.
Woohoo, a proper nail tech doing one of these! *high five* That place is disgusting. I am a nail tech so I do my own nails. I just don't understand how people can go to these places.
I get acrylics done at J'adore in Rancho Cucamonga, which is currently rated 4 stars on Yelp. They do a good job, but I've never really paid attention to the sanitation. Will do from now on though!
You've REALLY opened up my eyes!! Thank you for doing this! After yrs of doing my nails myself, I recently started getting them done "professionally" again. I neverrr thought to pay attention to the detail you mentioned in these videos!! I'm shocked & revolted at these places using USED tools! That's a serious issue! Infections & diseases are real!! I'm now not so sure the last 2 salons I went to used sanitized tools... & not so sure the pedicure tub was too... I do remember the nail file that was last used on me had white residue! Shame on these nail salons that do these disgusting things!!😠 But thank you for opening my eyes! Don't worry about the insulted people on here all over a WORD you used. That wasn't the reason for this video. Be proud of all the people you have helped & educated! Like me!😉👍👊
I really love this video, this actually taught me safety and sanitary things I should know before I go to a nail salon. I only got my nails done twice in my life. The next time will be for prom and I will definitely watch out for those!
Hi Jenna, I am also a Certified Nail Tech. And much of what you have shown today I could never have put myself through. The first one with the pedicure had me thinking of fungus growing everywhere. The pumice stone, omg. How did you manage to sit through all of it. The nail manicure, was omg over the top bad. I would never have been able to sit through her taking dirty implements and then proceeding to use them. The first thing I learned as a Nail Tech was cleanliness. We sat through classes teaching us about the various fungus that can and will grow on implements, the hazards of nail debris, the very real blood issues, as there are times when a client may bleed due to hangnails or other things wrong, nail biters are the worst for bleeding I have found. And ya, KUDOS Girl, cuzz I would have walked out. And I have also always instructed my clients to do the same, It is their right to demand only new files and to actually witness the disinfecting of the steel items as well. And anyone who ever has sat in my chair has excellent knowledge about the health and welfare of their nails. I hope you also teach your clients about the safety of nail care.
Omg, here in Mexico you get for 25 dollars both hands and feet w/ mani and pedi plus gel (a really good service tho) I can’t believe the prices of those places for that shtty work. Nice vids and cute makeup💓
@@chofschofs9107 It still doesn't compare. It's like here in the United States, I can charge $75, whereas in parts of California and NYC, it starts at $105. Some parts of the country can only charge $45. It's all subjective.
I hope you get sooo many new subscribers and just in general acknowledgement because THIS is how these one-Star review videos should be like. I literally had no idea they were supposed to change out the nail file. Literally I’ve been to dozens of nail salons and I’ve NEVER had a fresh & brand new nail file used on me. I THOUGHT IT WAS NORMAL! Wow thanks for shedding some light. I’m gonna take way more notice to other things now too that I just ASSUMED was normal or ok.
I don't go to nail salons, I went once 40 years ago and once for my daughter's first wedding. I have been doing my own nails for almost 60 years at this point, firstly I never had the spare cash to go for my nails, it was tough enough going to a hair salon twice a year for a haircut. But now I am grateful, I have taught myself well and do an excellent job on my own, and my nails have always been well manicured. Now that I am Diabetic I can't even trust a high end salon with my fingers and toes, I don't slip up and tools are clean..:) Being a nail tech though, you should be giving advise to laymen on how to do it properly instead of randomly picking a low star salon to test. With those bad reviews, why subject yourself to the risk of Infection when you see them using dirty tools?
I'm so hard on my nails (manual labor) that I just learned how to do the gel myself. I'd gotten dip powder done professionally a few times but I didn't like that they dremeled my nail bed every time. Admittedly, mine don't look as good as a top salon but I change them frequently. Saw a few tips on using peel off base coat for gel...What are your thoughts, knowing I change mine up a lot?
Oh my god. I live in Columbus Ohio. For all of my services they’ve always been cut wrong, ignored what I wanted, used unsanitary tools, drilled too far and damaged the natural nail bed, and there were even dogs at one salon.... I just studied and do my own now.
I love how at the end of your videos you’re all “it is what it is”. You knew going into this what to expect. I wonder how many people don’t. This is the reason I ALWAYS check reviews for everything from services to makeup! Love your videos!
Hi Jenia! I only have one salon in my area and sadly, it does remind me a bit of maybe the first one you went to; as well as this one. I'm in Payson AZ and it is always disorganized, has clippings, and reuses everything. They don't always have plastic bags in the foot bathes either! The one time I got my toes done there, it wasn't wrapped. They almost always have a rush-feel because it is the ONLY salon and customers always walk-in. If you have an appointment you have to wait just as long anyways. I've waited upwards of 3 hours before, assuming that isn't normal lol. Last time I got my acrylics removed about a week ago, they didn't soak them, they just cut the acrylics in a diagonal shape, tried shoving another acrylic under mine to pop mine off. This ended up breaking and causing 2 of my nails to bleed. Only then did they begin to file the tops in an effort to thin them out. I was then moved at least 3 times to finally get acetone on 7 of my nails that weren't removed yet. Including the nails that were literally bleeding lol. Needless to say, that hurt, a lot. That was the last straw for me. I'm never getting my nails done there again.
I sooo appreciate you spending your money and time to do these videos. Thank you. Only once have I gone into a shop where the tech opened a new package of utensils and when she finished with them she put them back in the package and handed them to me. Every place should do this.
i have never been to a nail salon in my area (i’ve been to MANY MANY SALONS) that used sanitary or new tools on my nails. the files and boards are always used, and the drills are always used and dusty from nail dust, then used on me. i never knew that this was illegal or THAT bad until i watched your video! now i’m kind of disgusted.. and i wonder if there’s any places where i live that actually follow those laws. this scares me!!
YOU are so brave, girl! I've been doing names for 13 years, and don't think I could do what you just did LOL - But I love how you used this to educate the clients.
Idk maybe it’s bc im biracial but I can clearly tell that you are as well!! You’re beautiful and i loved watching your videos. If you don’t like they way she talks, get off her channel. She didn’t come on here to be ridiculed. She’s trying to be informative, which she was. Her use of the term “ghetto” was properly used. And can I start coming to you to get my feet done lol also maybe consider reporting them??? A lot of the stuff you pointed out is really freaking nasty and they shouldn't be allowed to continue doing this!
Thank you for informing us of basic nail laws. I had no idea and now can look out for any violations. Thank you! Also you should make a video of red flags/how it should be when going to salons. Thanks!
in my city, the nail tech i often go to will charge me $5 for a ziplock bag with a buffer and plastic nail file in there, and if you forget to bring it they give you another and charge you the full amount of $5 once again, even if you dont want you “have to buy it” because it was used on u. what are your thoughts on that? im in oregon so it may be a bit different with the state laws.
Her in Brazil they don't charge anything , after the nail tech finishes using the utensils (idk if this is the right word) they go into a machine that clean them and all the nail files are thrown in the trash, if any salon is using anything the wasn't clean in the machine (or new ones, in the case of nail files) the need to pay a ticket
Mady Rose - that’s f**ked up. A brand new nail file from one of the top companies in the USA is $.64 (and they come from OR) so to charge you $5 is bullshit. Run far away and find somewhere else for sure.
I am in Oregon too. I get charged only a dollar though for the bag with the file and buffer. It's so damn hard for me to find a good nail salon! From Portland to Hillsboro I have searched high and low for a good place. I have many horror stories from all the piss poor places I've been. If you know of a good place, please let me know! Lol
As a professional, I have to say that’s pretty questionable. I don’t like reusing buffers or files. Eventually the grit wears out. Also, depending on who it is. Someone could be keeping it in their car, exposed to heat in summers. That bag would become a breeding ground for bacteria.
I live in Oregon as well and the salons around town do the same. I go to one that doesn't require you to purchase the kit they just use new files for all customers. It's a newer salon and they also use plastic liners in the tubs. It's very clean. It was SO HARD finding a salon I could trust. You never know what your going to get lol.
I went with my sister to get her nails done for prom and she also got a pedicure but I just got a manicure. And the pedicure chairs were stationed next to the nail tech desks. And the nail tech pulled out this old nail file that was literally peeling the material off. So when my sister asked for a new one the nail tech said "No no, I glue it back." And this lady grabbed a bottle of NAIL GLUE and GLUED this piece nack to the file and continued to file the rest of her toenails with it. I about vomited it was so disgusting. So we reported it and these inspectors found MOLD growing in these plastic drawers next to the EXPOSED TOOLS. *bleh*
On average, there are less than 10 inspectors for _thousands_ of salons per state. Some states don't even fund their state boards of cosmetology via state funds. Not to mention that often, state boards are horrendously corrupt, and inspectors do not accurately report salons even though they see clearly what is wrong. The good news is, you might still be able to do something about this! Some states have volunteer chairs on their state boards, and while a PDF of your state's cosmetology laws might seem huge, most of it is really just common sense! If you spend a little time studying up on your state laws, and get a used, recent print Nail Technology textbook from eBay or a similarly priced site, you'll have almost as much knowledge and know-how as a technician (fresh out of school, but a technician no less!), and you can volunteer for your state board! If this video has truly opened your eyes to the health hazards that go unpunished and unnoticed, as a nail tech I would ask that you give it a go and help spread information about salon health and safety in your states. We really do need all the informed help we can get!
What is this primer for gel nails? I started doing my own gel at home with the cheap kits from Amazon and eBay, and I just start with the base coat. I can get a solid 2-3 weeks out of my manicure before it lifts at the cuticle because I am still bad at painting the edges.
Depending on how long your nails were soaking for also would explain why the polish popped off. Soaking during a manicure isn’t really that great because you’d be surprised how permeable your nail plate is and expands so when it dries they will shrink back causing chipping and peeling.
Totally agree. Soaking before applying polish isn't really done now due to how much the shape of the nail plate changes. It only takes 30 seconds for nails to absorb water.
Also a Licensed Nail Tech, and this video is brilliant! Thank you! I may make my own for my facebook page, so that my clients and followers can see the comparison of my sanitation and a chop shop. I am one of maybe 3 sanitary licensed nail techs in my area, out of what seems like a thousand. We have hardly any inspectors from our state board here in Indiana, and so salons know that it is way easy for them to get away with improper sanitation and use of illegal implements. again thank you for posting this video it gave me a great idea, I think I might try to do one of my own!
Dear sweet young lady... you took quite the chance, glad you didn't end up in the hospital. I saw your pedicure tutorial also. I have just started my 42nd year of being a tonsorial artist. I absolutely love this industry. I am from Wisconsin, and spent part of my career as a State Board Examiner. I have had to be beyond reproach. Although I agree with you on the aesthetic part, it is not something that will hurt the public. I would be more concerned with the sanitation and safety part of the service. Here in Wisconsin, if the public realizes that the salon or spa isn't doing what is necessary to protect the public, ( and they probably wouldn't) they can go home and call the state with their concern. At that point the state will send out a State Inspector. When the State Inspector has looked every thing over, they will "write up" the establishment. They will either get a fine, a license suspension or both. Trust me the fines in this area aren't small. I have no idea how they do this in California, but if they have a practice of doing things like back here, If I were you, I would report this to your state Licensing Dept. No one will ever find out who blew the whistle, and you might just save someone from getting a bad infection, going to the hospital or even losing a toe or finger. I am a diabetic, and if an infection were to occur on me, chances are it could kill me. Please, you are a smart lady, with the inside story. The public depends on you to keep them safe. Please do so, and take it further. There is no sense in doing these videos, unless you are going to take it to the end, and keep people safe. Who knows, you could turn out to be someones Hero, and there is nothing better than the feeling you did the right thing.
i can't believe you just sat there while she used tools from a soiled container. filming for the purposes of education or not, you should have said something and shown all of your viewers how to stand up for themselves. what a shame.
And where would that have got her? Those places don't care, she's 1 person, they would just ask her to leave and work on the next person who may or may not care either. It's not about standing upto these people, we don't have any power. The video evidence she got can easily be passed onto authorities who can shut those places down, THAT'S why she kept filming!!
@@Stuck_on_pause Not to mention if she calls them out on the first thing, they may do the rest of the treatment professionally when they normally would not. Then there would be less evidence that they're unsanitary.
After this video I’m never going to get my nails done again! I never thought of how gross nail salons are! Thank you for actually being knowledgeable and showing what is wrong.
There are salons out there that do follow the laws. Firstly, those walk-in places are the ones you need to avoid the most. Secondly, If you find a salon that requires an appointment to be booked, look at their online reviews, their Facebook page etc. Don't let this put you off getting your nails done, as I said there are some amazing techs out there!
Honestly this is 90% of my salon experience. I commented on your pedicure video and I did not know all of these things. I stopped going because it was either this or I went to a cleaner place and the service was half assed still.
Thank you so much for this video! It helped having someone who works as a technician explain what they are doing wrong. I majored in public health and interned for the city health department and there were so many violations with my local salon. Like using the same emory board on multiple clients is disgusting when they only cost like 15 cents a piece. Many don't realize this but when they don't sanitize the tools, so say they cut your cuticles, there is a high chance of getting bacteria that can lead to amputation. I think inspectors should go as paying customers and then cite them, cause if they go in just like that as an inspector they try to cover up they're violating regulations
Thanks for these videos, they really opened up my eyes on what to look out for when I go or my daughter and i go. Too bad I'm not near you, I would go to you. You seem to really care about your customers. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for your videos I learned so much now that I look back I’m like what the hell!!! I live in Vegas and everything that you have said is against the law they have done here ugh.... I’m definitely going to be paying more attention to what they have sanitized....
She didn't wanted to massage your complete hand because when the oils were to go under the gel polish.. bye bye polish almost instantly.. and she wanted you to be at least at home before that happens I guess?
That's not how that works at all and it isn't an issue unless they file away the seel on the edges. Are you then not supposed to wash your hands either?
I got my nails done a week ago, which is something I don’t do often because i prefer to do it all myself. My cuticles were destroyed, my nails were filed crooked, and i got infections on 3 fingers :( then they peeled in 2 days. I’m glad for this video, very informative.
My big sister is a manicurist, she went to school for it here in Missouri. She does an AMAZING job on my nails. Biased opinion maybe. Lol but she's teaching me so that it'll be easier to know what I'm doing when I go to get my license for it. I really enjoyed watching this video and it made me look up laws in Missouri for giving manicures professionally. The last time I went to a salon, the ladies didn't speak a lot of English, which is fine, not a big deal, but I had a problem with a nail brush they used for cleaning the underneath of nails. I didn't want to use it because I didn't know whose nails it had been on and I noticed prior to being seated that she had just did a pedicure on another ladies toes with it. It was my first time in a salon so I didn't even know if you were supposed to use one on your toes. But she wasn't going to go forward with my manicure if I didn't do that. So needless to say, I left dissatisfied and irritated and never tried another salon again. And I won't. I'll go to my big sister or do my own. lol
Great video overall but just a suggestion to just be careful with word choice or word use especially the term ghetto. For me and for some other I have seen it was making me uncomfortable and some might see it as offensive. While I wasn’t offended the connotation around that word is sensitive so just be mindful.
Jessica Coleman they’re all synonyms lol. Ghetto - (adj.) jury-rigged, improvised, or home-made (usually with extremely cheap or sub-standard components)
I am so blessed to live in Oregon. In the town of McMinnville is a nail tech (Exclusively Nails by Jessica). She is amazing! Sanitary, takes her time and does it right, willing to explain her processes. She has inspired me to go to school and become a licensed tech as well. So sick of unsanitary "chop shops" and wish that people would pull their heads out and understand what a quality manicure or pedicure is suppose to look like!
No. Primer isn't really necessary unless you're getting extensions, enhancements, whatever you wanna call them. Over time primer can do bad things to your nails, and should never touch your skin. Dehydrator is a necessary step though. Dehydrator you could use every day, and is totally safe. Moisture naturally returns to your nails in about 30 minutes. Gel REALLY likes extra dry nails.
I do my own nails for this exact reason! Thank you for "taking one for the team" so to speak and shedding light onto these disgusting habits that so many salons practice
I swear my phone was listening to me talk about my horrible mani and now this video is in my suggestions. It’s like we went to the same salon!! They cut my finger and I was gushing blood being on blood thinners that I mentioned before getting started and now it’s infected with blood mixed in the gel!! Lesson learned, doing my own nails. So much for treating myself!
(Once again my choice of words as an example lol)
Lastly, there was one small topic I just wanted to briefly bring up.
Jenia on Film you should pin this comment to the top so everyone can see it
You need to chill if people are getting offended they are too sensitive
Nobody can just brush things off anymore. Always have to be so sensitive. I've heard a lot worse, you just got another subscriber ♡
You should go to a high rated salon and see if you can spot any mistakes!
Yesss!
I would love to see this

Honestly I think this is how the board should do their checks. They’ll never know what’s really going on until they go undercover
I worked in a 97% rated salon and honestly I would have rated it 50% or less. We weren’t provided with any disinfecting solution and the uv sterilizer was broken. I had to bring my own barbicide for my own tools.

I agree!
Whoa! My name is Jordan Leigh!! Hi!
Yes!! I loved this
Right
I don’t really like the idea that “you get what you pay for” when paying $25 for a gel mani. No one deserves to get a possible infection or permanent damage to their nail no matter how much they pay :/
Alyssa Gomes agree completely! Sometimes that’s all people can pay for, can only go once in a lifetime, they don’t deserve fungus on the side lol
They also say it as if 25$ wasn't nothing! An average working person makes 90-100 per day, those are at least 3-4 hours of work!

I’m gonna start looking for this from now on, cause you’re right. People who don’t know the laws or understand those things pay it absolutely no mind.
Torally agree, but I'm kinda annoyed that she didnt actually do this in this video ugh!
Savannahep why would she not ask for new, clean instruments? She's a pro so she should know the risks, how are views on TH-cam worth potentially getting an infection? Besides she'd still get same views if she'd asked for new or sanitized instruments. Kinda dumb, imo
She probably wants to see how they would treat a normal non educated client and knows if she speaks up they might start treating her different than normal and she wouldn't be able to honestly warn people
How are people offended by you using ghetto the right way??? Lol every time you said it, it was for something that was actually ghetto.
I don’t mean for this to be rude or anything but she didn’t use it the right way because “ghetto” is not an adjective, yet she was using it as one. I’m not saying that it was offensive but just how she said it is not grammatically correct. 😁
@@splotchyspraytansally2579 people aren't going crazy though because she was grammatically incorrect, now are they?
Splotchy Spraytan Sally it has more than one definition. On Dictionary.com there are six definitions and two are adjectives. “Slang : Often Disparaging and Offensive . noting something that is considered to be “unrefined, low-class, cheap, or inferior:
Her furniture is so ghetto!”

Noun - an impoverished, neglected, or otherwise disadvantaged residential area of a city, usually troubled by a disproportionately large amount of crime
Adjective - jury-rigged, improvised, or home-made (usually with extremely cheap or sub-standard components)
Just like how rank means two different things
Noun - a position in the hierarchy of the armed forces
Adjective - (especially of air or water) having a foul or offensive smell.

For real! I paid a little less at a nice salon and my gel nails lasted for such a long time.

Hepatitis is a real risk at nail salons. That's a nope for me

Fernanda Alvarado you do from the dirty tools. I’ve heard of it before 😣
elpida komianou I mean, hepatitis can only be spread through eating, sexual intercourse and blood 🤔 I get tools might be unhygienic but a tool having ALIVE BLOOD CELLS on someone’s open WOUND sounds kinda improbable

I know of several shops in my area that I'm truly shocked they're still in operation. i'll never understand, why people who make this kind of videos, NEVER reveal the name of the salon. if they're working without following along the laws of this job, they need to be shut down asap. i'd just call them out but that's just my opinion i guess🤦♀️🤷♀️
Very informative + entertaining! Try going to the best nail salon in your city next :)
Yes!
I once went to a nail salon in Richmond Virginia and the woman doing my nails took the debris brush from the station next to her, used the brush part to kill a moth on the wall, and put it back like nothing happened.
Where was that?? I need to know where to avoid as I'm looking for a place to get my nails done.

That's disgusting! My manicurist said these places dont get caught because there arent enough inspectors. At least in my state of Michigan.
I'm a cosmetology student in Indiana, can confirm. I've heard it from multiple people, instructors included. And looking at local salons, it checks out.
Can confirm in Oregon. Only 6 inspectors for the whole state. And the board is funded from the governor's pocket, not the state. Think of that what you will
Can confirm. I'm actually pretty sure you share your 3 regulators with us over here in IL... and WI.
Very informative! I’ve watched alot of these but you’re the only one talking about actual sanitation issues. Thank you for that
My favorite part about going to salons like this is dropping the bomb that I am a nail tech then they change how they do my nails and look like they just 💩 their pants.
Maybe people should start just saying that they are so they get the service they should be getting 😮
But why do you still go? I'm a nail tech and I will never set foot in a chop-shop or anywhere I didn't know has a good reputation!
🤦♀️
SMH.
“If you ever find yourself getting an overpriced manicure...well, good luck Charlie” 😍
OMG

I seriously hope you reported both these places to the dept of health and the BBB...
That sounds perfect! It's an experience and you should be able to feel pamperred

Why couldn't she just poor a cup of water in and turn it on for 10 minutes?!? YOU ALREADY HAVE THE MACHINE.

Thanks for not only entertaining, but educating! :)

I was thinking that too!!
Totally agree. Soaking before applying polish isn't really done now due to how much the shape of the nail plate changes. It only takes 30 seconds for nails to absorb water.
Quiet_shy_girl exactly!

By the sound of it, there may have been a language barrier.
She is testing their normal routine. If she was asking for them to change it then it wouldn't be an accurate representation of their every day work.
After this video I’m never going to get my nails done again! I never thought of how gross nail salons are! Thank you for actually being knowledgeable and showing what is wrong.
rachel definitely read reviews! I find where I am I would avoid the salons and go to a home based nail studio.

She didn't wanted to massage your complete hand because when the oils were to go under the gel polish.. bye bye polish almost instantly.. and she wanted you to be at least at home before that happens I guess?
When I worked in a salon we massaged after the gel polish and our guests polish stayed on until they came back to remove and reapply.
That's not how that works at all and it isn't an issue unless they file away the seel on the edges. Are you then not supposed to wash your hands either?

What word would you use?
@@dhhayden Shady?
Destinée Hayden trashy or disgusting
Jessica Coleman they’re all synonyms lol. Ghetto - (adj.) jury-rigged, improvised, or home-made (usually with extremely cheap or sub-standard components)
NeeYoDeeO synonym or not, if it affects people why would you want to say it.
Thanks for the tips! Glad to know what to look out for next time I get tips and gels and a pedi.....
You should make a video of the same experience but calling them out for the infractions and see their reactions
The primer!! My salon never uses it smh that’s why my nails don’t last long
Thank you for "taking one for the team" so to speak and shedding light onto these disgusting habits that so many salons practice
when you talk you sound like you're yodelling
I swear my phone was listening to me talk about my horrible mani and now this video is in my suggestions. It’s like we went to the same salon!! They cut my finger and I was gushing blood being on blood thinners that I mentioned before getting started and now it’s infected with blood mixed in the gel!! Lesson learned, doing my own nails. So much for treating myself!
