Every ball joint press I've used is a three hand tool. This one actually looks better than most since the cups are retained in the ends

It's a great tool, we got one at the shop. But it's extremely awkward and way to dam heavy.

I guarantee you’ve struggled on a dodge ball joint. If you used this, you’ll realize how much easier and faster it is. Our store bought it when it came out, does the job so much faster than any c-clamp ever has. I highly recommend it.

I watched my pops with this exact tool... for solid 20 minutes try and work out a rusted, completely welded, solid lower and upper ball joint on a 95 ranger.... about 20 minutes later I saw I'm driving to Napa and he got complete lower and upper control arms with new bushings... and he sold that tool back to the matco guy and said "if it's that fucked up and needs this kind of tool, it needs the whole arm replaced" lmao

@@letsfixit251 how so? 3/4 ton and heavier duty trucks use solid axles because they are more durable than IFS. This has been proven with countless GM Duramax tie rod issues.

Pro tip. Tap on the knuckle with a hammer when pressing in and out to release the tension and your cups won't flare and last longer

Depending on the material. obviously you don't want to go banging on forged aluminum control arms. That's a recipe for disaster. You certainly don't want to heat them up either.
I've been using a 5lb hammer for over 20 years. Don't over complicate simple things.

Grease the threads, apply some pressure and whack (persuade) the ball joint yoke with a hammer to relieve it. Watch the ball joint move. Pressure again, wack, last pressure and its out. Much easier on tool and much longer life of tool.

That's why It makes no sense someone would make fun of somebody for hitting on them. We've all been there and th darn thing just won't pop. The smart ones that see loads of these in a month buy this thing, the broke ones or the ones that can't justify it for one use alone (understandable) will get a bigger hammer and keep whackin the knuckle. The installer locked it when the put it in by saying "that's not going anywhere". Now you have to unlock it by saying "It can't be stuck if it's liquid". Grab a torch and a hammer, or get you one of these babies.
I use the HarborFreight ball joint press to change u-joints…it’s a game changer!
Look at what he is working on.....4x4....lower ball joint.... maybe you can get the harbor freight setup in there to do the lower, but your probably going to end up taking out the upper ball joint first.
@@ryurc3033 I did my 06 Ram 3500 4x4 this weekend with the harbor freight kit and did not go through the top on either side. Worked very well.

My Ram 2500 ball joints were far too much for the HF tool. Literally bent the tool open. It is stout but those d*** things were IN there. OTC kit from Amazon worked

Where was this 40 yrs ago when I was making up jigs and belting these things for hours, bustin my nuckles and driving the neighbours crazy. I still would have heated the mount a bit to get some expansion before the pressing out of the ball joint.
Apparently the same place I have been. That's not inventing one of these lol
I spent a day building biceps before learning that the top swing arm ball joint on pre 80's mopars was not a press fit but a shallow thread. I had a machinist make up a large square socket to accept 3/4" drive ratchet handle and with a 3 foot length of pipe over the bar I was able to unscrew them but still needed heat. I think Chrysler wanted you to buy a whole top swingarm assembly. I still have the socket 40 yrs later. You never know if I might one day get that 440 'Cuda.❤

Facts
To extend the life of this tool, it’s best to tighten some and tap the knuckle, tighten, tap. Doesn’t take much longer. Also I found that keeping the threads lubed up, drastically helps extend life and create more tension. Great tool!

Man you never used one.
I use ARP bolt lube on all of my press and puller bolts. The bottle is expensive but it lasts a long time and I never gall the threads on anything.

DO NOT do this unless you want your stuff to be double stuck next time. I work for vw, we dont use grease for those reasons like americans do slapping it everywhere and anywhere. As per vw instructions you even put bearings in with NO grease. But to each their own

Having that pivot is smart.
If the tool says it's ok to use impact on it, at least use a good strong moly grease on the threads.
They’re still going to stretch as will that bolt. Might take a few years, but constant use will eventually break that bolt.
An air hammer would work just as well and be way more useful.

Been doing nothin but suspension work for almost 30 yrs used the hammer and the c clamp just got one of these from matco love it does take a little getting use to .

Did this on my truck recently. Very satisfying to do.
Don't ignore creaking front suspension. Three weeks after MOT (roadworthy) in the UK I heard the first small noise. Took it back and told them that I thought the balljoint was shot. Picked up the car and was told it was the fly-wheel making the noise. A week later I booked it back-in and told them to replace balljoints. The next week before the appointment the balljoint popped out on the motorway, screwed the fender, driveshaft and tyre. Big bill (paid by the mechanic) for a small part. Got the car back today after 2 weeks.
Sorry to hear that. The noise is definitely a first sign. Never overlook the signs.

@MatthewMorton-sb8ms They missed a worn ball-joint in the mot. I returned the car within weeks and said I thought it was a worn ball-joint. They said they thought it was my clutch making a noise. I then returned to book it in specifically to replace the ball-joint. They never.treated it as urgent and it separated on the motorway before it could get done. Had I laid a complaint they possibly may have lost their mot accreditation. The follow-up is within weeks the axle boot split and they charged me for the repair. So they couldn't be bothered to check the quality of the part they supplied.

You need to smack (shock) the side of thar steering knuckle while conpressing the ball joints. They have a
.005 press fit. You will eventually tear up your tool if you dont.

I do the loan a tool from my local parts store. 10 pound C-clamp i call it. Take it back when I am done.

Nice thing about this one- it moves the power screw out from under the vehicle, so you can flip it with less chance of running out of room on the bottom

And some yall don't have a lot of shop time clearly because I would never use that thing to remove a ball joint and let's just say for fun sake that one day I gave in and used it. I would definitely put a little heat on that yoke to keep from destroying my new fancy, costly tool that I didn't need. The old type with threaded rod was only used to install ball joints. Rust belt don't mean shit when you heat it first. Use your heads, why put that kinda pressure on your tool. Go grab a mallet and ball peen, betcha I got it out half that time. Great advertisement though.

With the combined time of finding the correct cups, finagling the thing into position, getting the air hose, impact and socket..... The guy with BFH has already knocked it out and the one on the other side

The snap on BJP C clamp style is the best I've ever used. I used to use a 5 lb hammer but the front Jacks lock on the drive on lift gave out on the side I was hammering and this clean ass 06 duramax fell off and the ball joint hit the rack. The other side was about to slide off the rack. Ran and grabbed a jack, lifted it on the rack and was barely able to grab the frame rail to pick it back up so I ca get the lifts jack back under it.
You need four hands to use that tool.

Electric tools have absolutely changed the game.
This is one of those tools that you will hardly ever need it but it makes a HUGE difference when you have one
Just as sure as you need to press in and out a ball joint, you'll need it.
That's how not to use a ball joint press. Usually the tool specifically says do not use impact on it.
Um that's not the case...this is a robust tool...if you want to use the tool by hand...that's during the installation process....
Nope! I can assure you that your comment is erroneous! I am a Matco Distributor and when the manufacturer demonstrated that to us THEY USED AN IMPACT. It’s definitely intended for use WITH an impact… carry on
Us professional technicians like to torture test our tools. Especially while they are still under warranty, heck most have a lifetime warranty.

The real advantage is this tool is on the install, way smoother installs with this one than the regular c-clamp ones
Plumbing pipe the circumference size of the ball joint and a jack. Lower the car with the pipe in place and shzoop. That’s how I learned to do it.

Rental press tool are always missing tools, bent, stripped and just worn out. Sometimes you can't even get a socket over the thing because it's mushroomed out 🤦🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️

I used to swap out the lower control arms and or ball joints on my stock cars after each season...or as needed I always has a full front suspension parts set up I carried on a peg board in my trailer......
Never has O'Reilly's had the rental tool in stock when I needed one. I decided their "rental" program was just a scam to score brownie points. I don't think they actually even rent any tools! 😅
