“Miles Morales is not Spider-Man” It’s a phrase I see a lot, especially when a new Miles related product is coming around the corner. The more accurate point is that Miles is not their Spider-Man. Some feel that Miles will always be second to Peter, and that he is not Spider-Man, but Miles Morales, who just so happens to have the same powers as Spider-Man. Since this discussion is currently ongoing and likely to continue through to the release of Spider-Man 2, I wanted to give my thoughts on this topic and add to the discussion, hopefully in a meaningful way. This will be an opinion piece more than anything so don’t be afraid to drop your own two cents below. I’ll also be talking about mild spoilers from Spider-Man 2018, Spider-Man Miles Morales, and Into The Spider-Verse. I also can’t show many clips from the films because there is a solid chance that it will be copyrighted so I’ll do my best to match the on screen visuals to what I’m saying.

So. I want to begin by talking about the fundamental differences between Peter and Miles, as far as modern interpretations go. Aside from the most obvious... height, the two come from different cultural backgrounds with different support systems. Peter comes from an environment where he, despite his intelligence, is always struggling to get by, no doubt because of his other responsibilities, and in many instances, Peter is shown to do this alone. Mary Jane is often the most he gets as far as a support system goes, but Miles has most of his family backing him up as well as most of Harlem, which leads into another fundamental difference, their roles as heroes.
Peter over the last two decades has become something of a heavy hitter in mainstream media. Not just in popularity but in the scope of his tasks. Many of his latest outings see him dealing not with the fate of his friends, family, or even New York, but the world, the universe, and the multiverse. He may not be an Avenger, but his media is always chasing an Avengers level threat. Hell, Peter's latest outing saw him taking down the sinister six, and granted that could be more of a reflection of Insomniac's lofty ambitions, but the point remains that Peter is so focused on the greater world, that we lose touch with his humble roots. This evolution of the character isn’t a bad thing, but it’s a blindspot that functionally, Miles gets to cover. Miles is Harlem's Spider-Man. He fills the gap for a friendly neighborhood hero. But it isn’t as simple as Miles covering small time tasks, it’s about Miles being in touch with the community. He literally rescues cats, and in return the people help him out. Peter has these benefits too, but again, his adversaries often make him lose sight of the little guy. This is of course more in reference to the Insomniac games, but even in other stories, like Miles and Peter in Into The Spider-Verse, the dynamic shows up again.
Who is Spiderman? Who is not Spider-Man? Is Miles Spider-Man? Miles Morales is a new character, exploding in popularity since his recent film and video game introductions in Spiderman Miles Morales for the PS4 the Spider-Man Miles Morales PS5 port, Into the Spiderverse, Across the spider verse, and with that, there has been a rise in the notion that Miles Morales is Not Spider-Man. In my opinion, if Miles Morales is Not Spiderman, then Peter Parker in Spiderman 2, Spiderman 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, and even Gwen Stacy is not Spider-Man either. @@Gamfluent A lot of the Spider-Men work because they're the only Spider-Man of their own timeline. That's how Miles became Spider-Man - Spider-Man of the Ultimate series. Failing to re-brand him when they integrated him into the 616 timeline was a mistake.

Whenever I see people arguing about "Miles Morales is NOT Spider Man" all I can think is, Do you think Peter Parker would agree with you? EVERY interpretation of Peter Parker would welcome Miles with open arms. The biggest tragedy of the Ultimate Comics was the fact that Pete died before he could be a big brother to Miles.

That’s a shitty argument and very similar to the IHE defense of the SW sequel trilogy of Luke wouldn’t have wanted fans to act this way. I like miles but he will never be Spider-Man, you could even argue that Peter Parker isn’t Spider-Man but the mask that he wears(like Superman).
I want to add that the movie iterations weren’t Spider-Man either(tho Andrew Garfield got sorta close). Gwen, miles, Miguel, Toby, Andrew, and Tom are all spider-men but none are Spider-Man.

Y’all saw how happy Peter was at the end of the first PS4 game when Miles revealed himself and he could reveal himself as well? Y’all saw how Earth-1610’s Peter in the first Spider-Verse was willing to help him, even said “Stick around and I can show you the ropes”? Be like that. It’s not a competition of “who’s Spider-Man” to you, because truth be told, like mentioned many times before, anyone can wear the mask. Sticking to Peter (pun unintended) is just a mindset that has to grow up. I say all of this while Spider-Man’s prob my favorite fictional character and Peter’s the one who I’m most familiar with.

The entire point of the *SPIDER-VERSE* movies and comics is that they’re *all* Spider-Man, like that’s literally the premise.
But they all have their own names. Spider Noir, spider girl, spider man 2099, etc. Miles needs his own name imo.

My issue is that in something like insomniac miles is they make him better at literally everything than peter and it makes it feel like he just exists to be a tokenized Spiderman replacing the white dude. like lets have peter train him up a bit instead of having him immediately be better against peters villains, better at traversal, better at stealth, stronger, faster, a better hero, more in touch with the community, doing something with martin Li that for some reason the game acts like peter never could do anything like that, beating peter up while he has the symbiote and being a better Spiderman to the point that everyone in game is saying how peter should retire.

@@Skywalker-lz5qj For Martin li, Miles is better then Peter at dealing with his mental health. Miles has so many people to turn to when things get hard, therefore it’s not as big a challenge. With the symbiote, there was no way Peter was winning that, the symbiote was holding him down. First of all there was a giant bell, second of all miles electricity is a weakness for symbiotes, third of all, Peter was also fighting the symbiote to get it off him, fourth of all he just fought kraven seconds before. Pete was not winning that and it’s not his fault. Please provide more examples.
My guy no one in the game was saying Peter should retire. They just said he should take a break. Why do yall have such a problem with Pete taking a break in Far From Home and Spider-Man 2(Insomniac) but then glaze Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 when it basically had Peter almost retire

Peter is *THE* Spider-Man. Miles is *A* Spider-Man.
Peter Parker is just so iconic that there will never be any other Spider-Men who are as much Spider-Man as him. Goes for Miguel too or anyone. Like Superman and his son also being called Superman. Or Batman etc. Hal Jordon and Jon Stewart are both Green Lantern totally equally. I don't see either as THE Green Lantern. Same with Dick Grayson and Tim Drake as Robins. But Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent are all THE Spider-Man, Batman and Superman.
I think that the issue is that people get so hung up on the “tradition” behind spider-man. The fact that Peter has been in narrative purgatory in most modern media(especially the comics) is a direct consequence of this. People get so caught up in the decades of history surrounding Spider-Man, so caught up in the nostalgia that they actually stifle the character. People are so attached to what they know as Peter Parker that they can’t accept any meaningful character progression. Remaining stubborn and fighting change only hurts our enjoyment of spider-man stories because there’s only so much Peter Parker can do. Miles is spider-man, so is Peter, so is Gwen, and so is Miguel. One may have more attention and history but that does not make the others any less valid.

Miles’ popularity among other comic book variants is unrivaled. It’s not the same as the robins or super man’s son. It would be surprising if this generation and the next view miles as THE spider-man. Peter might be THE spider-man but to me, miles is.

Miles Morales is Spider-Man.
There is no *THE* Spider-Man. Since Peter just calls himself Spider-Man.
And I seriously doubt that there will never a Spider-Man as Iconic as Peter, Miles has only been around for 12-13 years and he’s literally the second well known Spider-Man asides from Peter, around the world and his popularity is literally surpassing Peter’s in some cases. And a lot of people love Miles are relate to him just as much if not more so than Peter because of his origins and drama that surrounds him as Spider-Man.
No other Spider-Man character gets a lot of heat like Miles does and there’s a big reason for that.
I do tend to be one of the more “gatekeepy” types of fans because I see how atrociously Hollywood and the comics industry treats important legacies and stories. But I have never understood the rejection of Miles. We have a long running tradition of legacy superheroes passing on the mantle and alternate and equal sidekicks or counterparts joining them. Miles is completely worthy of Spiderman. We all know who the OG is, there’s not reason to reject the new guard though.

The only thing I don’t like about him being Spider-Man is that two different heroes being active in the same area and both called “Spider-Man” is weird and confusing. I have absolutely no issues with the torch being passed and Miles taking on the name Spider-Man after Peter has moved on for whatever reason. I just think that while they’re both active, one of them (doesn’t matter which) should go by a different name just for the sake of clarity.
My problem with it is how there are 2 heroes called spiderman going around

When nightwing got the mantle he acted as batman until the moment bruce returned with lead him to go back to being nightwing

Miles, Miguel, Gwen etc etc are all Spider-Man but Peter Parker is THE SPIDER-MAN. The original who set the standard of what it is to be Spider-man.
Videos like this are why you’re one of my favorite TH-camrs. Peter, Miles, Gwen, whoever are all Spider People. Peter will always be the definitive Spider-Man doesn’t meant that others can’t hold the title and fight for what Spidey stands for. Excellent work as always!

As I've said before: Miles is not the ORIGINAL Spiderman (ie, Peter Parker) but he IS undoubtedly a bearer of the mantle.
It's the difference between Dick Grayson and Tim Drake as Robin. We know who the original Robin is, when you say "Robin" people probably think of the original, I even personally prefer one over the other, but they both *are* Robin.

Except that's not true. When one is Robin, the other is Nightwing, or Red Robin. They both *were* Robin. We can accept either one as Robin. They aren't any more, they've moved past it. We would have issues if they both were Robin at the same time.
Miles is the same issue. In the 2017 animation, he had to be Spider-Man II. In the 2021 animation, he's Spin.

I think the confusion comes from some versions of miles being with a peter. Like miles is spiderman in his own universe, but when they chose to make shows or games where he has a peter that already exist, it just becomes confusing. Because how do you address miles if the spiderman name is taken already. I know they tried to call him kid arachnid or spin, but that's just so stupid. Let miles be alone in his own world so that he can be spiderman.

The reason I love the insomniac games so much is because the stories of Peter and Miles' respective games reflect their Spider-Man identities so much.
Peter's Story is about saving the whole city from MULTIPLE Super-Powered enemies. There are mob wars in the DLC that threaten to tear the city apart. It's all very grand in scale.
Miles' Story is so much more intimate. It's still large, but it's about saving his community, not the whole city. There are activities where you save people while learning about their lives and personalities. He's saving his new home from corporate dicks who see him and his neighborhood as disposable, and they ALL have to band together to show that they aren't. There's a gang of angry youths that cause havoc because (supposedly) they aren't being guided by positive models. They don't have Rio Morales as a mother or Genke as a friend, Peter as a mentor or Feast as a way to help others. I'm growing up in London, and I see first-hand how badly young people can fall into constant anger because they don't have support.
(Talking about Miles as a whole now, not insomniac or spider-verse specifically)
The beauty of Miles' Spider-Man is that Peter started out just like him. Small-scale. looking out for the little guy. A freindly neighborhood. But as he made larger and larger enemies, he grew in his concept and had less and less time for the little guy, which he knew was having a negative impact. But then Miles comes along and begins looking out for the little guy just like Peter used to.
Miles is no less than Peter. He is no less Spider-Man. He is no less a hero. He is on the exact same path that Peter took, and he can only grow from here. One day in Miles' journey, he will be at the exact same scale as Peter is now, and maybe he'll take on another Spider-Person to start the cycle of heroism again.
Miles 100% IS Spider-Man.

A trope of multiple Spider Man together is amazing if eventually they gives Miles a Partner when Peter is done would be a really refreshing idea and we are finally entering that age where everyone can relate to one of the spider power characters

Both miles and peter are spiderman end of story. Its ok to relate to one more than the other and to have a favourite. But always remember that the point is anyone can wear the mask. Miles has just as much of a right to the title as any other spider person out there, and its cool to be kind to others. Some kids growing up will look back on miles as their spiderman one day.

Personally for me Miles Morales and peter parker could both be Spider-Man and still be great heroes, heck my favorite version is spider-girl mayday parker the daughter of peter parker and Mary jane who's really awesome and a great legacy character in my opinion and seeing her teaming up with Miles Morales Spider-Man would be really awesome and tons of fun, and frankly having all three characters being spider-men and girls actually makes sense and all of them are heroes which i approve at least in my opinion. :)
Honestly I would love a comic where they make peter parker have a happy life, conceive mayday parker and have Miles definitively take up the mantle Spider-Man with Mayday becoming Spider-Girl as like his student. Kind of continue that cycle.

See in the comics, he's written to be just a tokenized version of Peter. Only difference being that his parents, and uncle, are still alive and that he's black. And he can turn invisible and shoot lightning out of his hands.
It also doesn't help that they decide his origin story is to kill off Peter just to replace him with Miles. Why not just give Miles his own universe where Peter was never Spider-Man and Miles is the only one that gets bit in his universe?
Sure, there's Gwen where she had to kill Peter, but that Peter became a villain.
In the movies and the games, they actually made Miles his own person. Where Peter is smart and can build gadgets, Miles is more creative and artistic and relies on Ganke to help with his gadgetry.
But, also it comes down to the fact that when you say Spider-Man, the first thing you think of is Peter Parker. Very rarely are you ever going to think of Miles Morales. But, when you say Miles Morales, well... he's the first thing you think of. Miles doesn't have his own way to identify him as another Spider-Person.

Give him his own backstory, his own universe. One that doesn't involve killing Peter, yet he still learns With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.
Miles’ story exists in the ultimate universe. He would be no different an no more popular than other spider-man variants. There’s nothing wrong with people seeing miles morales as “spider-man”, because that’s what he is. The other spider-man variants are known as spider-man in their universe. They’re not “spider-man 2099”, they are spider-man. People may think Peter when you say spider-man and people may think Miles. He is not a gimmick spider-man like the rest of the variants so he doesn’t need a tag. He’s spider-man. Suggesting to rewrite his story and dispel him when he’s one of the most popular characters- more popular than the other variants, is absurd. Miles’ story is that he becomes spider-man due to the death of ultimate spider-man and for the most part it’s consistent.

I gotta push back on one point you made about Peter fighting against super big threats like the Sinister Six, meanwhile Miles is engaging in more neighborhood level threats - like saving cats and helping festivals. In Spiderman PS4 there are a slew of moments where Peter helps out the civilians of the city in neighborhood friendly ways - like getting that guy his pidgeons or helping a woman's husband not be blackmailed. Peter's ultimate threat being a city wide pandemic and Miles' being a decent sized crater in the middle of NY are both fairly large threats and they both find time to engage and help the people of the city with their problems.
That’s the thing, Peter used to be the small community guy, but as he grew in experience so did his roster of villains causing him to put less focus on community. I do agree that Spider-Man starts out as focusing on the little guy, but then continues into attempting to balance that focus of the little guy and the city wide threat. That’s why Peter doesn’t just outright join the avengers, he focuses on New York .
It’s also why I’m happy that Miles is more community focused with his recent stories in the games (Spider-Man: Miles Morales), the first Spider-Verse movie (and I say this because he’s trying to save his community from being destroyed) and in the comics too.
I love these smaller videos about people’s general thoughts about a topic. Don’t get me wrong, the video essays and reviews are great, it’s just nice to have a quick video to watch on the bus or before bed.

I never really read Spiderman comics growing up. I only saw him whenever he would show up in other Marvel comics, like when The Punisher uses him as a personal shield. But all this new Spiderman media coming out, the movies, animations and games, really makes me want to be a bigger fan of Spiderman.

Well said, it's not about who's wearing the mask or the person behind it, but the mindset behind the one wearing it and how they react to day to day, morale choices.
This is exactly why I always could relate to Peter, the original comics version and also the Ultimate Spider-Man version as well.
I like Miles character, even though I do not find him relatable to me personally (and that's okay) it does not mean he won't be relatable to others that find him so a retable character to those who can relate with his life or decisions or problems, highs and lows.

I think Miles is a Spider-Man, if Peter isn't in that universe.
I've just never enjoyed the idea of a superhero taking another hero's name while they're still around. So I think Miles works best when Pete doesn't exist, is dead, or retired.
But I think this is a bigger issue of comic writers not giving him his own unique identity with the mask.
He only has like 1 bad guy of his own (Prowler), everyone is just Pete's scraps, Miles didn't get his own superhero name (not even after he became a part of 616), and he just has to live in Pete's shadow.

I've made an argument very similar to yours and I got called a racist for it. I'm fine with more POC reprenstation in media. Miles is the inverse of Peter but only superficially
Peter is poor, Miles is middle class
Peter was an outcast, Miles was relatively popular
Peter is an orphan raised by a single parent, Miles has a full family
Peter went to public school, Miles goes to private
This is what we call "Going WIDE and NOT DEEP". The writers have YET to dive deep into ANY of this to write compelking stories and characters around him so Miles just borrows Peter's villains for the most part. Its so SAD😭.
He has no villains written AROUND his character...because he has NO noteworthy CHARACTER traits outside of being a COWARD(which they didnt dive into fully at all, like they constsntly play on Peters selfishness and anger issues) just superficial traits. If I were to ask you what Miles stood for, you'd have no answer, unlike with just about any other well estalbished to even B list Heroes

4:40 I think this one thing I really enjoy more from Miles than Peter is Miles’ everyday life is a lot more closer to mine. Peter is very much the nerd, he gets picked on for it and is generally seen as kind of a loser with a few close friends. But that just isn’t the average high schoolers experience at least it wasn’t for me. I wasn’t smart but I wasn’t a complete idiot, I wasn’t with all the cool kids but I had a fairly decent social circle from a variety of groups because high school is a time of trying to fit in with people and you don’t know where you want to go and who you want to surround yourself with and generally in modern high school settings there aren’t many stereotypes anymore, everyone just sort of mixes with everyone and I think Miles better shows that.
He’s very intelligent and quite the geek but he generally gets along with everyone. It’s that one scene in Spiderverse where Miles is walking through his neighbourhood and you can tell he has a sense of community, the miles morales game shows this off in the intro very well too, he’s not a complete nerd that’s socially inept and female repellent like Peter is always portrayed, he gets along with everyone

I think that Miles suffers from only one issue. He lives at the same time as Peter Parker.
I honestly think that's the problem. Because of that he's constantly compared to Peter and people can't help but ask themselves why is he here in the first place.
They're afraid that Miles will replace their favorite character. Which is understandable. It would be like wanting to replace wolverine or something.
I think that's why miguel doesn't suffer from the same problem.
He's different enough and lives in a time where peter parker is long gone so he can live to his potential without being constantly compared to peter.

What people mean is that miles didn’t really have his own identity from Peter for a while, he just kinda took Peter’s villains and did what Peter did. More recently he has differentiated from Peter a bit, but still he is just Miles Morales to most people. When you say Spider-Man most people think Peter Parker, not Miles Morales. He is just a different flavor of Spider-Man to people, and not much to differentiate. He doesn’t even have his own name, even if it’s just a name to use on the cover like Spider-Man 2099 or Spider-Gwen. His comics have to say Miles Morales. I wish he had his own name.

I like the idea of miles being the prowler, like he took the title of his own but I love him as spider-man I feel like he really proved that famous quote that “anyone could be spider man it doesn’t matter if your white, black etc” I remember this idea someone had if there was a new universe that miles starts as prowler in the beginning and when he really learns with great power comes great responsibility then he becomes spider-man.

I'm gald all these new Miles Spider-Man content is actually making him his own character. Early depictions of his character, he was literally Peter Parker/Spider-Man but black. There was no difference between the two.

i asked my younger nephew who spiderman was and he said miles. While to me it's peter. people who grew up with these movies will have way different thoughts than people who didnt.
Miles isn't really a Spider-Man regardless of whatever hack writer wants to tell you, Spider-Man is Peter Parker, every other derivative is just that.
The only people that are worthy of taking the mantle of Spider-Man and actually keeping it is Ben Reilly (who's original self unfortunately ended up dying) and Miguel O'Hara in the far distant future.
Miles Morales despite being shown as a unique great character in Into the Spider-Verse and *only* Into the Spider-Verse will never escape the fact that he was created as just another token raceswap character.

Miles Morales is NOT Spider-Man. Peter Parker is Spider-Man. This is a true statement. The same way that Bruce Wayne is Batman and nobody will ever truly take on that mantle in the same way. Most of the people that I speak to in person at comic book shops and game shops (in real life, and not on social media garbage) who believe this actually LIKE Miles Morales as a character, but simply don't like that he is just named Spider-Man when he could have been something like Spider-Lad or who knows what.
Miles is spider-man, "Spider-Man" is a mantel. Miles, miguel, peter, are just some who hold the mantel
@@CRYSTAL_CUSTOMS Fair point, and I respect it. Though if I may add, Miguel O'Hara is Spider-Man 2099 the same way Terry McGinnis is Batman Beyond. These two characters exist in a different time when the previous bearers of the mantle are retired or passed on. Miles existing at the same time as Peter is what throws it off. Two Spider-Men existing at the same time throws it off. Thus, the "Miles Morales is not Spider-Man" claim does have merit. It's less about disrespecting Miles, and more about showing the proper reverence to Peter at the one true bearer of the mantle in our current time.
Seems all the differences you mentioned between the two are the results of the writers inability to potray Peter's friendly neighborhood side and keeping his character consistent throughout different iterations rather than him loosing focus on the little guys.
Miles is Spiderman, and so is Peter.
