Why The iPhone's Screen Randomly Dims

  • If you have an iPhone, you may’ve noticed its screen randomly dimming, even with the brightness slider on its maximum setting. There are a few reasons why this happens, starting with the most obvious, the auto brightness feature.

    I hope I’m not mistaken, but I think (and I’m surprised you didn’t mention this) it dims even when the sensor detect that you’re not looking directly at the screen, so that it can turn off the screen earlier if you’re not looking at it. The iPhone has a sensor that understands if you’re directly looking at the screen, it’s used for Face ID security purposes.

      Correct. When you’re looking at the phone, the screen usually wont turn off (unless you disabled that feature), but when you’re looking away it will dim and turn off

    • @MrGilRoland
      @MrGilRoland 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sadekomar It’s related to the attention awareness feature. I can’t find any official article from Apple mentioning that it dims the screen, all articles I find on the feature are from iPhone X times, they are old. But if you search the internet you will find some tech articles talking about this specific aspect of attention awareness. I have to say, I think the feature is still bugged though, because my phone sometimes dims sometimes doesn’t when I’m not directly looking at it. I guess in doubt it just leaves the screen full on.

      On my Samsung I can turn on a feature where it detects my face. If it detects my face looking at the screen, it will keep the screen on. Otherways it will turn the screen off after a certain period.

    ah, you forget to mention in energy saving mode the display will get dimmer and the phone will lock in 30 seconds (unchangeble untill the energy saving mode disable),
    and the light sensor work better if the ambient light hits the sensor directly, so if there is a tiny shadow exactly on light sensor the display will get dimmer (this is on any phone).
    the only dimming *problem* that i had is with some monitoring apps (like my sound mixer app) what should have a feture called (allways on display) dimms and lock the phone based on configuration set by the user on "screen and brightness" settings of the phone.

    We are talking about randomly dims, both night shift and true tone are conditional(and by some thing that is obvious enough for us to notice) also human retina is less sensitive to yellow light, that is why even tho the brightness remains the same, we though that it is dimmer by just turning night shift on or enabling True Tone.
    Fun fact: human memories are not reliable. Thus, it is possible that you could have just forgotten that you have enabled those feature causing you to think that it is randomly happening/ random event(s).

    I have true tone off, yet it still does it despite it being off in settings....Ok, kinda odd but a 1st world problem and there are bigger worries in my life to fuss over but I turned it off.

    I really missing a kind of customisable low battery setting from the iPhones. Why I can’t choose the screen set down timer from 30set to higher for example? 😣

    Phones can also dim if the sensor is pointing at a dark patch in your room etc. The area where the phone is could be somewhat lit, but the sensor is pointing at a shadow

  • @Kaiserschlacht1

    omg i finally know why ... i havent heard about the actions iphone makes during overheating , mainly because i just gave up searching why is this happening .. after all those years of owning iphone 6, 8 and now 12 pro which is still doing this , most of my friends with iphones are randomly encountering this as well, even in premium reseller store where i bought iphone 6 and 8 nobody knew what was responsible for this all those years, i thought perhaps there is faulty sensor or it is battery issue , i dont know if android users are encountering this behavior but it was and is still weird to me ... so long lasting case is finally solved i guess, thank you

    • @AJ56
      @AJ56 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One of the main reasons I upgraded to the 13 pro max from the 12 pro max was the vastly improved thermal throttling, 12 and earlier iPhones are very prone to overheating within minutes when using full brightness, 13 pro max never dims, only game I could make it dim was Genshin impact on maxed graphics.

    • @Kaiserschlacht1
      @Kaiserschlacht1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AJ56 ive noticed that newer iphone i have , less it dims , my 6 nearly always dimmed, 8 bit less, 12 pro even more less, i thought that 12 pro would get rid of dimming since it is thicker design, maybe stainless steel construction could help , oled display technology, bigger battery and it did got rid of it more or less... though i dont want bigger phone than that, dimmin at 12 pro is really occasional sight , sometimes when i put phone to charge and it gets really hot , it wont dim but sometimes when i play a game for long time it dims slightly or maybe doesnt dim at all even when phone is hot , when i watch some video through safari it occasionally dims suddenly when phone isnt even warm yet, its strange

    Sometimes, my iPhone starts to heat up for no good reason. I could be home, making my room super cold, not run anything heavy on my iPhone, and it’ll still start heating up and playing around with the screen. I just don’t get why /;
