Do not hurt lady bugs. They eat aphids, etc. Do no harm to butterflies. They pollinate flowers and vegetable/apple flowers.
In our basement we do put a shallow bucket of soapy sugar water….and camel crickets, roaches jump right in n drown.

I spray my broccoli plants with B.T. to keep the white butterflies from laying eggs on them. The caterpillars will eat my broccoli plants otherwise. B.T. Is harmless to humans and other animals and it just repels the butterflies so they will find somewhere else to lay their eggs.

I came across this use for my favorite dish soap when visiting my mom who has ants. I instinctively grabbed the Power wash when I saw a few and they immediately died. It became my weapon for them in the house and cracks in the cement. I mentioned it to my plumber and he gave the exact same explanation about the exoskeleton. It also knocked down wasps. She lives in Delaware so bugs are part of life but it’s not acceptable to me. Btw, I did get the same results with Clean Freak.

I've been using Dawn Ultra & water in a spray bottle for years instead of the near-endless/costly variety of home spray cleaners(I add chlorine bleach to make my kitchen/bathroom mix germ-killing). And it wasn't long after starting that I found it effective against a variety of insects. Thank you for better explaining why.

@@sweetbeep At 100% Dawn will melt the grease and crud from an automobile's neglected engine and engine bay. Yet it is mild enough to wash crude oil from affected ducks fouled in an oil spill. Exact ratios are not really necessary. Chlorine bleach, however, can be disastrous to the color of fabrics if too much is used. Perhaps 'Anti-Bacterial Dawn' would be a safer, more user-friendly concentrate for most UNdescerning households. 👍

This does work to stop what you can see, but not so much in the way of deterring new pests in most cases. If there's enough residual on some plants it Could keep certain pests away, either way it's just slightly more effort but a much better "solution" than using all the harsh chemicals that aren't good for anything to be exposed to.

Whatever you use, vacuum your mattress afterwards. And throw all pillows and blankets in hot water wash. As hot as you can. I’ve heard of some people throwing pillows , stuffed animals, blankets etc into a large trash bag tied tightly for 24 hours prior to washing. I did all this when my daughter had head lice 25 years ago.

I've already noticed the benefits of having Dawn dish soap (or the Kroger store brand version, same thing) in my house.
I was having a lot of trouble with ants in my house. I switched to Dawn (green apple scent) because it was on sale. I left it uncapped for ease of use. Shortly thereafter, no more ants. I figured out why.
All the standard home remedies for ants (peppermint oil, cinnamon, etc.) depend on things with a strong smell/aroma. Ants live by scent. Those strongly scented items disrupt the ants' abilities to search for food, send signals to each other, etc.
Since Dawn seems to repel ants (and a lot of other bugs), there's something in it (the scents added to make it pleasant for us humans, whatever gives it it's grease-cutting power, something) that messes up the ants' scenting abilities.
This is why I keep an open bottle of Dawn (actually the Kroger store brand since it's the same thing) in my house by my kitchen sink. When I need to buy some more, the old bottle goes in my bathroom (another spot the ants seem to love) so the little bit still in it can repel those little bugs. When it's time to buy another bottle again, the old bottle goes in the trash, the kitchen bottle goes in the bathroom, and the new bottle goes in the kitchen. I keep this cycle going year round.
I've also noticed other bugs have either greatly reduced their numbers or disappeared altogether. All because I keep open bottles of Dawn in my kitchen and bathroom.
BTW, I noticed something else interesting about a common household item. When I drive around, I usually take a can of Diet Coke (or rather, usually the Kroger store brand) with me, especially during Summer. By the time I'd get home, the drink would be warm, and there wouldn't be much left. So instead of taking it into my house to pour out into the sink, I poured it out in the grass and then took the empty can inside to dispose of properly. It didn't harm the grass, but after doing this for a few months, I started to notice something: my yard was free of fire ants! So I kept up the practice.
I don't think the Diet Coke kills them. I think they don't like it for some reason (the CO2, the stuff that makes it a diet drink, whatever), so it drives them away.
When I noticed fire ants starting nests on the other of my house, away from my driveway, I'd take some Diet Coke to pour on those nests. I used to do this regularly when I mowed my own grass, but since I've become unable to mow my lawn myself (I pay a neighbor who makes a little extra money by mowing grass for folks like me), I don't see any nests developing, and my neighbor just runs over them without any worries. The fire ants stay outside, so I'm not worried about them anymore. Now, here's the thing that pops into my head every once in a while:
Fire ants are notoriously tough bugs. If Diet Coke is nasty enough to drive away these super-tough bugs, what's it doing to me as I drink it?
    Hmm...
    🤔 😲 😟 😵

I've never heard that! If it's true, you can't measure that against its effect on fire ants. Those are the toughest bugs I've ever run across. Diet cola doesn't kill them, but they don't like it, so they move away, and it takes a lot to make them move.

Thoughts like this help to explain the resurgence of people starting their own gardens and even starting a homesteading lifestyle. They grow their own fruits and vegetables, they grow their own herbs/plants for making beverages (teas, sodas, wines, beers, etc.), and they raise their own animals for meat and eggs. They also make their own natural, organic pesticides and cleaning supplies that are not harmful to humans or animals.
Personally, I want to do all of that, too.

I totally agree. I started using rubbing alcohol either 50/50 or full strength about 15 years ago when I was visiting my daughter and she had a roach problem. I wanted to use something that wouldn't affect the animals. It killed roaches and ants even flies and moths on contact and I've been using it ever since.

For the ants and most of the insects, the Dawn lowers the surface tension of the water so that it is able to be sucked into their spiracles (air holes though which they breathe) and they drown. I highly doubt it breaks down their exoskeleton.

    • @prof113
      @prof113 ปีที่แล้ว

@user-hx6hl9wd5v I don't know. I"ve never had to deal with roaches, but I would imagine since they must breathe too, that a variation on that technique would work. The soap would lower the surface tension of water so that it does not bead up and can enter the spiracle.

Soap based products are much safer on plants than detergents.

There is a point you missed it must be a liquid when coming in contact with insect or it will not kill them . Secondly spraying on plants only works after insect has ingested said plant material so damage will occur to your crops . Soap has its place but only in preventing crop damage very poor insecticide. Also if applied too often or in too heavy of a concentration it will kill your plant!
