They both sound awesome. I have the 6505 mh and have no complaints. I play metal and punk and only even use the rhythm channel. And your songs are killer. Love your guitar style
I bought the 6505 a couple weeks ago and I just wanted to share this I played a Show Yesterday at a skate contest and the Backline consisted of just 1 Speaker Cabinet which we didn't know (we are 2 Guitarists in my band) and we were panicking a little bit and thought that we could cancel our show. BUT the engineer there saw my 6505 MH and told me that i could go directly into the front of house. At first i was worried about it not sounding good but when i plugged in and he turned me up i was just blown away, the sound was fantastic considering the fact that it was running through the MDSI Input. So If you are worried about the MDSI Input being terrible i can tell you it is not and you can definitely use it.
After trying one in person, the Invective seemed more suited to low-tuned and extended range guitars with its gain voicing. Played a baritone through it and it worked very well. A D tuned six-string sounded too twangy. The mini 6505 on the other hand sounds good no matter what guitar you run through it..
This is a hard choice for sure. Personally I think the boost switch on the invective is a little bit limited and I would almost prefer the throw a boost or od pedal in front of the 6505 mh which I already have plenty of to choose from.
I've played the 6505 MH through a 1x12 cab. Cleans and Rock sounds were exactly the same as demoed here but Metal sounds through the cab were a lot better than in this demo. I still enjoyed this comparison though. Rock on!
I just ordered a Peavey 6505 MH after watching this review. I had been considering the EVH 5150 LBX-S. But I like the 6505 features better. It's also a great sounding amp. So hopefully I made the right choice.
The EVH stuff is overrated. The 6505 tone is warmer and flatter in frequency response from the mids, to the top-end; with just as much gain. All of the EVH stuff from Fender has a bump in the upper-bass, lower-mids which, to my ears and some others is very off-putting tonally.
Nice ! You played some interesting chords in the high gain section. I appreciate that! Invective for me, seems tighter, but it depends on the application of course. Both sound killer!
Great comparison! Some notes as I listen - the Invective clean is very nice, I like it more than the 6505, but people are not really getting these for the cleans. The mid-gain on the Invective is much more high-mid forward - not as nice sounding in isolation but cuts better through the mix. The highs are a bit harsher (especially seeing the high turned down like it was, but that really only becomes a problem further up the neck. High gain is (as expected) similarly more high-mid focused on the Invective, but it cuts through the mix much better - it applies the kind of EQ I would probably put on the 6505 to ease some congestion in the midrange. The Invective seems a bit more nasally in the mids, but that works better in the mix and can be easily tamed (along with the highs) to taste with an EQ. Overall, they're both pretty good but I'd get the invective over the 6505.
Just picked up an Invective MH on a trade this week and honestly didn't think I'd be super into it but it sounds beastly. It's almost like a cross between a 5150 and an EVH. It's still got that huge and mean lower midrange but with the sparkle and clarity of the EVH amps. I haven't played the 120 but if it's anywhere close to the MH it's gotta be badass.
I'm running Creative speaks and subs through my PC so when I hear the amps in the 'mix' , the clear winner is the Invective but that's just my opinion!
Man, I've been WAITING for this exact demo. I'm an owner of a 6505mh and have been wondering if the invective mh might serve my taste more. The clear differences that you show in this are pushing me even further to switching to the invective! The riff in the high-gain riff portion is WICKED btw.
6505 sounds killer but for my sound I think an invective fits me better. It seems individual notes are more pronounced and have the bouncy djenty sound which I love. Seems like 6505 is a jack of all trades and invective is a master of modern metal.
I would love to see quad tracked guitars where each guitar has one take on each amp, specifically for the rock tone segment. I think the two amps would complement nicely, and if the gain was pushed just a TINY bit more from what you had here, or maybe if you engaged the boost switch on the Invective and then did nothing more, the quad tracking would thicken things up enough for high gain metal tones and it would sound awesome.
I would like to know have you ever shared a thing or two about figurine collection of yours? 😆 All kiddin' aside, great video, structured, to the point, covers every important aspect, all in all - very useful! Thank you very much for making this comparison videos!
By this comparison, I like the Invective MH over the 6505 MH, especially for studio recording. It has a much clearer sound across all the frequencies and this would lend itself to varying the EQ section for more choices.
Great video demonstration my man. I literally just bought my 6505mh lastnight. It should be here in 2 days. I'm a bass player but wanted to jam with my guitar as well. Thought the 6505 would be great for recordings. I'm a drummer as well but right now don't have the room for a kit, but that's ok as I bought a beat buddy for my drums and a Boss RC1 looper so I can sit and write songs and jam by myself. Thanks for the video. Jam on! 🤘😎
I’m wanting to get them both because I have the big brothers to both of the mini heads lol. I’ll start with the mini Invective and then hopefully I can get the 6505 mini head next at some point collect them all lol. Great video man! I enjoy the riffs and everything 🤘
Good job! I recently acquired a 6505mh and love it. Big gain on the lead, nice bright cleans easy to push. Humbuckers so far. In your test the very top-end of the MH is a little more sparkly. To my ear. I am learning about which amps use which tubes, and these have the similar capabilities as say the AC 30. I made myself a master list of my amps, with notes, tubes, and serial numbers. I'm up to 14 lol, and I've been lusting over a Morgan for one. Thanks for the video!
I was about to buy the 6505mh a few yrs back, but got the invective mh instead. Both are great but I am glad I got the invective. The clean channel is way better.
Man I wish there was a way you could tab what you play in some of these videos. I spend as much time trying to figure out what you’re playing as I do what I’m hearing.
This is the one i needed to hear. Ik denk dat beide amps zeer goed zijn en dat het echt een kwestie is van smaak. I'ts a matter of taste in this one. Both Excellent amps!
I prefer the volume tone of the 605mh on clean and crunch, the invective is to dry for me. In Lead, I prefer the invective 'cause is more "direct in your face!!" Thanks so much. I love your channel !
I'm assuming most of us have tube screamers any way so I would have loved to hear the 6505 boosted for fair comparison as that's a usual solution for the muddy lows
Fantastic video! I would love to see if you could get a Laney IRT SLS (300w hybrid amp) on the channel and do a comparison between the SLS , the Ironheart Studio 15W and the Ironheart 60W head
I have two 6505 MH's, I got a deal. Great little amp. Some people feel the lead channel is not too versatile with the gain, that it's just way too much gain. I use a Timmy pedal to actually drop the gain down a little and it makes it more fun. Switch it off for the high gain.. Been wanting the Invective MH. Getting a cup of coffee and sitting down for this video. Thanks Jon.
i loved the cleans on the Invective, and the dirty on the Invective is quite pleasing as well, they say it's voiced after the 6505....such a tough choice
They're both great but in all honesty having a 6505 MH makes me feel like I made the better purchase, just because of the rawness and overall feel that the 6505 has over the invective. I might be in the minority here, but I just like how it sounds more tube-like to my ears and less artificial if that makes sense. Having all of the features on the invective like the noise gate and the built-in boosts are great, particularly the gate, because I have so many boost pedals that it doesn't really matter if an amp has a built-in boost cuz I'm going to want to boost the amp anyway. They sounded similar on both of the lead channels but on the rhythm channels when you took it to a rock sound there was the biggest noticeable difference. Both good but yeah I just prefer that thickness and aggression of the 6505.
I would love a 50 watt mid-size version of the Invective with the midi features of the 100 but smaller footprint. Something similar to the EVH 50 watt amps.
@@neighbourhoodmusician yea man I think people would love that. People seem to be gravitating more and more toward 50 watters these days. Most of my amps are either minis or big boys. I don't really have anything in between but I'd like to grab a hot rodded marshall type amp in a 50 watt config.

@@neighbourhoodmusician good point! I have 4 big 100+ watters and they'd be overkill at a gig. Definitely gonna scoop a 50 watt at some point. Check out ceriatone if you're into hot rodded marshall tones. They make some good shit. I have almost all peaveys and I love what they do for death metal and the modern metal sound but now I'm getting more into classic high gain sounds. I love my Peaveys. Best amps for the money hands down. They hold their own with ANY of the bigger more expensive amps but in my opinion nothing beats the hot rodded marshall sound. At least for old school metal and thrash.
I’ve got a 50w EVH 5150III el34 combo and honestly for this type of amp, it covers all bases, plus has built in reverb and power scaling which the heads don’t.
Put a midgain preamp tube (5751) in V1 position on the 6505MH and it will really shine, more headroom for the clean and crunch channel, and less fizzy over-compressed lead channel, with more gain range.
Apologies if I'm a little late here.so "gain" is a term that has multiple uses.gain can refer to volume, clipping or saturation.in this case its post volume or poweramp volume.a master volume if you will.hope that helps
Great video. Been waiting on this comparison for a while. Can you do a comparison between the invective mini and the new archon 50? Maybe even the PRS MT15 too.
Agreed, sterile is a good description, I think way too transparent and sterile for me! 6505 just has the 5150 sound I fell in love with when I got my original immediately when they came out, man I miss that amp.
With the 6505 mh shown in the video - why is the faceplate different today when I look up this amp on sweetwater's site ? I know the video is about 2 years old, was there a faceplate design change ? The one I'm talking about has 6505 prominent center - not the peavey logo. They appear to be the same amp - 20watt / 5 / 1 - . Just curious b/c I don't see mention of a gen 1 or 2 or anything.
Hey man, love the video as always. Think you might be able to get your hands on a Bogner Atma? They’re pretty pricey, but I’ve had one for a few months now and I’d say it’s definitely worth it. Crazy versatile amp. I recommend checking out Johan Segeborn’s review. It sounds great for metal, has amazing light overdrive, and the cleans can go from Fender to Vox with the turn of a knob. I genuinely think this amp is one of the best lunchbox heads out there.
I decided to spend the extra money and bought the Invective MH because I knew my curiosity would drive me nuts if I didn't. No regrets, I absolutely love this amp. I also had a 6505 MH a few years ago. You really can't go wrong with either one. The difference is like splitting hairs but money being no object, I prefer the Invective. If you want to take some of that high end fizz out and sound closer to the 6505, just back off the presence knob. Problem solved.
what beautiful song is that? it's an interesting riff that holds on its own, sounds like a mix of Buckethead and Mark Tremonti, very melodic, loved it 🤘
Very nice comparison, excellent sounds. To me, clearly, the 6505mh sounds better everywhere, its warmer and fatter everywhere... there's a honkieness to the Invective, its thin and too transparent for me, a harsh thin quality in each comparison. Great amps each, but for me it's obvious the original is better.
On the clean that you started off with the 6505 MH is a little warmer and a tad bit fuller sounding than the Invective, but I like both. I'd pick the 6505 MH for the clean if I just had to choose. On your run with the overdrive I can not choose. I like both alot! Can't choose on that one. With the lead comparison I'll have both for the win. I think the invective has a little bit brighter top end sound to it than the MH. I still lean toward the MH but really don't know why. In a band with 2 guitarist one player using the invective and the other player using the MH sound similar then and would be soundtastic!!!
I read and heard the integrated cab sim is pretty crap. Would it be possible to use the speaker defeat on the back and record by sending the fx send to an interface? And use a poweramp sim+cab IR of course.

Invective with the gate and boost, as well as a good clean channel for pedals
Both sound great!
those two together, my new wet dry bedroom rig, i think it would work out awesome. only question is, which one for wet ?????
Great video 😮
that impulse response was not doing them justice
How do you balance the difference between clean and lead volumes on the invective?
I love the sound of both, but the Invective seemed like it had a layer of white noise over the top of it
You can't beat the depth of that chug on the 6505 MH.
Problem solved.
what beautiful song is that? it's an interesting riff that holds on its own, sounds like a mix of Buckethead and Mark Tremonti, very melodic, loved it 🤘
Would love you to compare the Classic 20MH and 6505MH!
Verrrry different amps though
@@SonicDriveStudio still would love to hear the comparison.
@@evankiljoy it would be tough because the classic doesn't do high gain at all. I had one for a while. Great sounding rock amp.
Great video
Very nice comparison, excellent sounds. To me, clearly, the 6505mh sounds better everywhere, its warmer and fatter everywhere... there's a honkieness to the Invective, its thin and too transparent for me, a harsh thin quality in each comparison. Great amps each, but for me it's obvious the original is better.
Perfect demonstration.
Did Peavey just release the same amp with an added boost and gate? They sound extremely similar to me.
Honestly kinda blown away by both. The invective sounded a little more bluesy chunky in the crunch off. I honestly didn't expect that lol.
I definitely like more the invective, the cleans you get from it are pristine and the gain is more brutal to me…. Good one buddy!!!
Thanks mate! I think I agree
I read and heard the integrated cab sim is pretty crap. Would it be possible to use the speaker defeat on the back and record by sending the fx send to an interface? And use a poweramp sim+cab IR of course.
You look a bit like a guitar playing Michiel vd Plicht by the way hahaha
For cleans - definitely the invective!
Thank you for incredible demo! For me - invective is absolute winner
