      @@tientran3271 "Love has no pain" This is one of the great hedonistic lies of our time, that this feeling, love is somehow fundamentally painless. Love is not some essence of pleasure you can isolate and bottle. Their look is deeply beautiful and meaningful, even in fiction, but they are in pain, they are hurting. They have lost moments of their life forever, because two things can not exist at once. The actors are brilliant in this.

    They both fulfill their dreams, and they pay the price of not staying together, but are truly happy for each other. This ending is tragic, but real and this is what makes the film a masterpiece.

    In the end, it seems as if doesnt play the last note on the piano and sort of leaves it hanging. I feel like it's supposed to show how he never got to see the end of their story together. So he doesnt know how it wouldve gone on if they have stayed together. So he doesnt know how the song ends. My perspective

    • @Eoinster
      @Eoinster 5 ปีที่แล้ว +233

      It ends on an imperfect cadence which is intended to have that exact affect, whereas most pieces finish or resolve on a perfect cadence. Our ears are kinda conditioned to pick these things up, even if we're not aware of it, and the music here toys with that a lot.

    As he plays the piano, it’s like he’s speaking to her, as earlier said in the movie. He’s showing her what it would have been like if they had gotten married, all of her dreams fulfilled, while he was left in the dust. He wasn’t the one playing the piano in his jazz club. He wasn’t the one getting to follow his dream. If they had married, both of them would not have fulfilled their dreams. It shows that they loved each other enough to let each other go. The stare at the end says, “ Hey thanks for letting me live my dream.” The only part of their dreams that they didn’t fulfill were each other. And that’s why this is a masterpiece and one of the greatest modern movies to date.

    This ending works so well because it displays what true love really means! Putting another's happiness before your own. The film is all about following your dreams and in the end their character realised that they loved each other enough to let one another go if it meant they could achieve those dreams.
    There are many different kinds of love and sometimes we meet people in life that are merely guides for where we are truly meant to be.

      The ending really puts all of La La Land’s scenes into a brilliant summary. Both loved each other & supported the other wholeheartedly, but as Mia & Sebastian’s arguement revealed, either one of them would be forced to give up his/her dreams at their partner’s expense, like the first 2 epilogue sequences shown. Mia & Sebastian would have seperated which they did for the sake of their dreams. However, they can abandon their career dreams & fufill their personal love for each other and marry. As romantic & happy as that may seem, in reality neither couple nor the audience would be satisfied with that sacrafice. The epilogue reveals that like real life, even though we love someone, sometines the relationship is just not meant to be. While it is dissapointing, La La Land debunks the happily ever after/ happy ending cliche often found in musicals or rom-coms which I love. They loved each other, but loved their dreams more which make their finale more heartbreaking, yet relatable & resonating to us. The use of perspective also conveys their unspoken fantasies & emotions of what could have been, if olny, and reality. Bravo Damien Chazelle.

      I disagree, I think people settle for 'happy enough' rather than true happiness. And I think this scene is meant to illustrate that, in the timeline where they end up together, they did'nt acheive their dreams maybe, but they are truely happy because they are with the person they are meant to be with, at the end of the alternate timeline they are watching the piano and they are so close to eachother and so happy, and they kiss, then it cuts to reality, the looks on both of their faces is a look of sadness and conflict, and she and her actual husband are a good distance apart, in the same room but not together like mia and seb were. That's the tragedy of the movie, we see how happy they couldve been, but they are content being 'happy enough' and that's a sad way to live. Because fulfilling a dream doesnt make you deeply happy, it makes you surface level happy and then your on to your next dream, true love with who youre meant to be with makes you deeply happy.

    That moment at 3:03, when Mia goes from a smile to almost a frown was poignant and heartbreaking. It tells us that even though she's happy for him, she's sad that things did not work out between them.

      I really liked the film. However, I don't totally agree with Chazelle. I think we are not ALL meant to love somebody. I didn't feel sad at all when I saw the last scene. If I were in Mia or Sebastian's situation, I'd be very happy, because I could've finally managed to fulfill my dream: to be a filmmaker. And I don't care what I had to give up in order to fulfill such dream, because I'm not willing to commence a love relationship. I don't care what Chazelle meant with La La Land. I totally think it is a huge masterpiece, yet I don't agree with him. I'm fine without love. Pal, we're not all meant to love nor being loved.

    • @MigsWasHere
      @MigsWasHere 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@logans.butler285 That's besides the point though. Obviously the romance isn't what pushed them towards chasing their dreams ,it was about sacrifice and being good to one another. Chasing their dreams was ultimately more important than their love. So they didn't "need love" to succeed, they just needed to believe in themselves and having to go through pain can be a push and the support that may make someone do what they have to do. This movie totally deserves a 10.

    Honestly this is ending to the movie is the reality of life. Hollyood always seems to skew reality with always perfect endings in a cliché way. While in this movie Mia and Sebastian do not. In real life we all have hurdles and this shows us it does not always go our way. Life has obstacles but you have to make lemons with lemonade somehow. Things go your way sometimes and sometimes they dont. Bravo to Damien Chazelle for writing this masterpiece and was robbed of a best picture. Same goes for Whiplash and how Nieman did not have total sucess even with his drumming. Both great movies and wonderful.

    The reason why I LOVE the ending, and the film as a whole, is because it shows that they could've BOTH achieved their dreams without sacrificing their love. It specifically goes back to the turning points in the character's lives where they could've chosen to NOT make the mistakes they did. Specifically Sebastian.
    After the audition, the pair had another chance at getting back together. They both blew it because they thought they were holding each other back.
    Had he communicated with Mia about joining Keith's band instead of just assuming, Seb could've moved in to Paris and played Jazz like he always wanted, and then come back to LA and start his own club.
    Mia made a big mistake by letting Seb hear the conversation with her mother. You don't talk like that as if the person isn't right in front of you. And considering Seb's lunatic breakdown at the dinner, she should've tried harder to calm him down. He's upset and he doesn't know what he's talking about.
    Moral of the story: you can follow your dreams together. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

      Exactly, people keep saying choose one but in reality love doesn’t have to be sacrificed just communicate and if it was truly real it will never just go away that easily maybe it’s just mia and seb wasn’t that real or they just love eachother as friends now

      @@smartwater598 but how do we know if a love is really, like really true at all? What do we compare it with? If the individuals and circumstances are different every time, how do we compare if either the present or the past love is true? Personally, i believe that we do not have a specific definition for love and we, as humans, have been trying to find its meaning since our existence.

      I respectfully disagree with this. The alternative ending shows that they could not have achieved their dreams together. What the director is trying to tell, at least in my view, is that love comes and goes, and no matter how hurtful it is, the breakup and moving on are inevitable in living life and following your dreams-the fairy tale stories just dont exist in real life. What the alternative ending shows is not a “good ending” per se; the real ending where the two, as individuals, achieved what they dreamt of, is the “good ending.”
      But i do agree that lovers should always communicate with each other!

    Only the second time I watched the movie I realised that this alternate ending, these few minutes that show us a perfect scenario where she follows her dream and has him by her side is lala land. It's this utopian reality where she didnt have to sacrifice love or her career and she could have them both. We see it through her eyes and that's why in this scenario Sebastian doesn't open his piano bar but follows her in Paris. The rest of the movie is what happens in real life, where we sadly have to choose one or the other. The title of the film refers to these last couple of minutes. Mia's lala land.

They were in a relationship for a specific period of time to teach each other things and learn what is good for them and what they want. Their relationship happened for a reason and they made the best of it and took the lessons for their future. They made each other better and pushed each other to fulfill their dreams. He is the true love of her life, and the ending does not say anything about his new love life, if ever he found another lover to ''replace'' her, but he is hartbroken as well....They both missed their great love for each other...tears, what a strong ending.
