    I have tried wet-on-wet painting, and that gave me confidence, now i want to try the style you show in these vids. I may not be any good, but i bloody enjoy it :-)

    I tend to just draw in the basic outlines of a landscape with a flat brush and some acrylic paint, mostly because pencil tends to smudge and look dirty on the canvas but that is just my personal preference.

    So, the underpainting is the mid tone values, and then the oil painting part itself is the dark/shadows layer followed by the highlights?

  • @2418flygirl
    @2418flygirl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh my favourite artist/teacher is back!! I've been watching for you. I have a question... When you do your trees, after you have blocked in and then done your dark areas with the transparent blackish colour mixed with the liquin, I noticed that close up when you start the green in the trees it sometimes looks a bit textured. Do you use something for stippling or texture medium of any sort?

    • @mikparker2572
      @mikparker2572 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      fran hanson it’s a bit late and you probably already found the answer out but it is an old filbert brush that has been worn down that gives it that look. You just lightly touch the area with a little paint and the effect follows

    As an artist looking to start incorporating more landscape into my work I really love your channel. I think in your videos though I would prefer continuos commentary because it's always nice to hear train of thought throughout a piece, but if you were going to include the sped up bits I think your videos would be more digestible If you had the montages sped up more.

    Since "the oil will cover the whole thing" wouldn't it make it easier to use acrylic colors unlike the colors of the oils which will follow? For example, wouldn't using red for grass make it easier to see that the acrylic has been completely covered by the green oil paint which follows?

    So, if the art world claims acrylics are historically UNPROVEN, is it a good practice to use acrylics as an undercoat?

      Yeah, that's a really good point actually. If the canvas and boards have acrylic gesso on them, how bad could a thin layer of acrylic paint be for oil paint adhesion. I've wondered about this before but it seems a lot clearer now, thanks.

    Dear sir your videos are excellent work ,Can i ask you some thing for beginners? Your work level is very high as you do first drawing of some scene first then block in the drawing then you go for details.As beginners the details part of your work to follow is almost impossible , can you give few videos just for low learning beginners like me to follow i mean as paint one mountain with some basic instruction, then some sky paint, as some single try as fin tree or palm tree , I think you get my point please help beginners who can not attend some academy and only hope is here from teachers like you.Thank you very much.

    Why do you use oils on top of the acrylic painting

  • @Cre8iveSignWorks
    @Cre8iveSignWorks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    i thought acrylics dried 'darker' not lighter

    • @BDMG
      @BDMG 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, acrylics dry always a little lighter and slightly more transparent. It's because the acrylic binder which is the base of every acrylic color is very "milky" as long it is wet, and it gets transparent like glass when it is dry... So the "white tint" gets lost once the acrylic color is dry. This lightening effect depends on the binder the manufacturer uses (but ALL acrylic binders I know are more or less white when wet and clear when dry). The effect depends also on the tinting power of the pigments they use. When using high pigmented acrylics the difference between wet and dry lightness is usually not as big as it is when you use low pigmented paints with less "pigment power" and more fillers...

    Does the comment that your paintings look just like a photograph give you satisfaction?

    • @chriswhitehouse8982
      @chriswhitehouse8982 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting question. I guess if someone is trying to paint in a "photorealistic" style, then it would. I suspect it is all about the technical challenge of trying to paint the detail so it looks like a photograph. However, I would suspect others would say that if your painting looks just like a photograph, then what's the point? I think there are people who like to paint all along the spectrum of realism.
