      Wow, Michael I've been watching you as I have time and this is so important to me because I failed a painting because of not sketching 1st. Plus I've heard Procreate is really awesome and thank you so much for showing us how to use it. I realize it's a lot to learn, but you made my day just showing me this much. I will check it out, but app sounds pricey. I love it though 😍

    I had asked for your technique in another video. I do photo realistic drawing and painting on a tablet using this exact same procedure. It's about getting the subject to your canvas quickly and accurately so you can start enjoying developing your art instead of struggling with proportion and placement.
    There are dozens of ways to make a transfer: projector, light box, grid, layers as displayed here, camera obscura and one thing they have in common is a rabid collection of high-horse purists that will denounce you for "tracing".
    I need people to hear that it's okay to use whatever means necessary to get the sketch on the canvas so the real work, the fun work, can begin and you can feel confident in that.
    And to the naysayers that call foul, if you think this gives us some magical upper hand, you need only compare MJS' start and end point to appreciate how insignificant the sketch phase is compared to the final product.

    • @warpedweft9004
      @warpedweft9004 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree with your call on rabid high horse purists. It's not just in the art world either. There are people in the craft world that set themselves up as the expert and tell people there's only one correct way to do something, and that's their way, for which they are charging an arm and a leg to teach it. Art is self expression and if you're going to stifle the pleasure and freedom of self expression with totally unnecessary rules, then you've just taken away the pleasure. If you want the frustration of a challenge, by all means go ahead and draw, but most of us don't. We'd rather spend our time enjoying the creative process of painting, rather than giving up before we get to that point because we can't draw an accurate sketch. We don't need purists sticking their noses into our private creative processes.

    What I used to do is adjusting the image in Photoshop using the Posterize filter to simplify the reference image. Then I use a cheap projector to project the image on a canvas and make basic outlines. It's much faster.

    This is great! I do something similar, but in Photoshop. I layer my pre-made grid file over my reference photo and transfer to my tablet. You're the first artist I ever saw use a tablet for reference (this is going back years now). It was such a game changer! No more printing and taping paper together for larger paintings, guessing at details. I'm a waterclor painter, but I've learned SO much from you. Thank you!

    Why create a sketch on the iPad to then have to sketch again on the panel? Why not just transpose a grid onto the original reference photo and use that to sketch on the panel, eliminating the iPad altogether?

    You can get a cheap af usb projector pretty much anywhere for under $50 that would save you a lot of time. Just project on the canvas directly, quick sketch with a pencil, paint. Keep in mind, it doesn't have to be a great projector. You're not tracing every detail, you just need the shapes and even the cheapest models can give you that.

    This is a pretty good technique! I don't have an ipad/procreate, so I sketch traditionally, then scan it, then figure out how many standard pages the canvas I want to use fits on, and then print the sketch on however many pages. I sometimes have more canvas on the edges than the image or too much image for the canvas, but it generally works out!

    Going to that level of preparation for the sketch... why not go one step further, and just get a projector to transfer the drawing? It would save you loads of time once you have your sketch done, and you could save the "sketch time" and just draw the sketch onto the canvas to begin with? It can also give you flawless size adjustment abilities... IDK, makes too much sense to me I guess. Oh, and DLP projectors are amazing for artists.

    Sometimes I use a grid as a tool. This got me thinking maybe I should try making it as a layer on GIMP if can figure that out. I usually adjust any building drawings by hand tho, of just draw without grid, so vertical lines are straight and I use perspective drawing, so as not to have the photo effect of lines slanting inward... even for 2 story buildings they seem to have that photo effect.

    • @warpedweft9004
      @warpedweft9004 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GIMP is a bit difficult. I have trouble figuring out how to use the levers for curves. However I have software where you can just drag the curve nodes around and add more nodes if you need to. It's is a lot easier than using the levers. Libre office and a mouse is far easier than either of those though.

    • @GeorgePencilArt
      @GeorgePencilArt ปีที่แล้ว

      @@warpedweft9004 Are you saying LibreOffice is easier to make the grid? I need to look at that and see if there is a ruler on there somewhere so I can pick the size I want for the even squares of the grid... a ruler so I am not guessing the square size. I don't really use LibreOffice to import photos onto, but I know one can import a photo to its document... I just never looked for a ruler on the sides before or if there's a tab to add a ruler.
