Thanks for covering this. Very appreciated. Just watched the reunion part. My take away is yes, this is sweet. in the same time it is not very representative of different ages and body sizes we see in japan. I tend to find many guys that I am attracted when walking around in Japan. On this show, there was only one person remotely getting my attention.
@@ninjascroller Well, considering two out of the nine aren't Japanese at all one is only half Japanese. So, six Japanese. As Meng and Andrew established (and I agree based on experience), Shun and Usak are outliers as they are definitely "hot ones". That leaves: Dai, Ikuo, Kazuto, and Ryota...who are a pretty decent representation of "ordinary looking" in Japan imo.
I feel like as viewers we were super interested in Shun because all the layers that he has and how he was very honest to let us see it all, his flaws, his insecurities... That's not easy to do in this shows where you see all of them trying to put out their best look, and a lot of people are hating him for that. Also, he has had a very out of the ordinary life, with nobody to support him and living as an orphan, so is really hard for him to invest his emotions and interact with people as most of us would do since he has the scars but not the skills, so i deeply get how his mind plays with him and the longing that he has of a family and love, but at the same time how scared he is of not finding it or feelling that there's something wrong with him and that's why he was abandoned and has been always alone. Cannot wait for the final review!
Exactly! It's sad that some people just lack compassion for someone like Shun who clearly had a hard life growing up without a family, a support system. He's indeed flawed and complicated but his actions were raw and honest, he didn't do all that with malicious intent but out of fear. I hope the viewers could at least watch Shun with kindness. Edit: I'm not trying to excuse him for his behavior, he needs to be called out for his faults in order to be aware of how he can change for the better. But "some people" are going overboard with the hate comments. Criticisms are good but don't pester them on their private accounts (also applies to 'fans' that even stalk their family/friend's accounts just to get details about them).
@@Yoiiii-qp6jxYa’ll have to calm down. His actions aren’t excusable because he struggled. Everyone else is just as layered on the show…. I still like Shun, but he’s a grown man.
I don't know about Dai looking Taiwanese but Shun definitely doesn't look Japanese to me, I thought he was mixed at first even, he has a very unusual face, the kind of features that would be attractive to anyone, male or female or any race at all. The kind of looks that most people from anywhere in the world would find attractive.
The commentary on whether it’s an “accurate representation” is so strange to me. It’s putting all gay people in the same basket when the reality is we live everywhere, work anywhere. We might go to clubs, or we might stay in. We’re everyone. It might not reflect the circles you’re in, but it doesn’t mean it’s not spot on for someone else. While there was clearly a theme with the casting, I loved the focus wasn’t on sex like all the other “dating” shows are. I don’t live in Japan anymore but I hope the people who see it, in Japan and everywhere, see the “normal-ness” in it.
Well said.. All the American dating shows are only about sex , no emotional bonding at all.. That is why i prefer asian dating shows, the interactions seem genuine and they are able to express deeper feelings with each other.
i really agree especially when you grow up queer in a very conservative place, the tv shows that are popular in the west don’t really mirror our experiences. and i think it’s so easy for a lot of us to question if there’s something wrong with how we express our queerness because it’s so different from what we usually see on tv. whether it’s an accurate representation of the lives of gay people shouldn’t be in question because as you said, we all have different experiences. a queer person who grew up in a religious family will not have the same life as someone who grew up surrounded by other queer people as well. you might think this show doesn’t mirror your reality but that doesn’t mean that’s the case for everyone.
I love the show-it's such a refreshing change from others like Too Hot to Handle and Love Is Blind. There's no drama, just pure love, love, and more love. I've never seen a show where people say thank you so often. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to you final thoughts.
one thing we should always consider about these kinds of show is that, it can be scripted or themed by the producers but it doesn’t mean these kinds of interaction between queer people don’t happen in real life. this show might not mirror your life as a gay man but we all have different lived experiences. i think the reason why it was well received by the public is because it offers a different perspective that we don’t usually see on tv specifically in the west. there’s really nothing that can really represent a whole community. anyways, i’m actually excited how your first impressions and opinions will change after watching the whole thing because i probably changed mine every episode lol. it was a really entertaining show especially seeing those people with very different personalities interact with one another.
Yes, at first the panel seemed odd to me. But as I was watching the show alone, it was so good to hear other people’s reactions, so I ended up liking that aspect.
One thing I will say about judging personalities on this show based on what we see in the show is a bit misleading as it looks like there were a lot of developments and moments we didn't get to see in the main 10 episodes. They have some extra clips where you can see a lot more personality from the cast members who didn't get as much screen time.
Yesterday i was thinking that i'd loved to watch your reactions about this show and guess what? here we are... Very happy that i can finally watch how you guys feel about it. I just finished the show today and i ended with a warm hug in my heart... it is obviosly that some things in the show are hard to happen in real life, but the grown of the cast was very fun to watch. It’s hard watching this having seen the whole season … because all the cast have grown on me and I like them all for different reasons … so some of your comments seem mean (but appreciate I would have had a different view if I’d only watched one episode). I loved this show so much … it’s so refreshing and wholesome compared to Western equivalents. I really hope they make another season!
So glad I came across this channel in yt recommendations, it's interesting to watch a commentary about this show from the perspective of someone who belongs to the LGBTQIA+ community and has some knowledge about Japanese culture. Looking forward to your next videos! Also, I don't know if you'd like to watch another gay reality dating shows after this, but I'd love to hear your thoughts about Sparks Camps Season 2 (currently airing and available on TH-cam) as well!
It's good to recognize whether the show is giving an honest portrayal of gay dating in Japan (like Andrew said, the "kiss on the beach"). At the same time, we should also ask if it's portraying a kind of dating the gay community would *want* to see possible. If it's a desirable reality, some people may try to have it, and push things forward a bit. This is also why some portrayals can be damaging over time. You don't want to create demand for relationship dynamics that simply don't work. Or worse, trap people in bad situations. Lord knows Boyscation is hot garbage and shouldn't be inspiring anybody, while Boys Like Boys and Sparks Camp feel incredibly down to earth. The Boyfriend is somewhere between those. It's hard to compare to, say, His Man, which lets the guys share bedrooms and socialize more, creating more variety in what we see from them. The Boyfriend is a little more honest about attraction, but feels so much more lonely. 🤔
Loved your reaction. I started to watch the show yesterday and I'm already hooked. And yes, as a woman I can confirm that Shun is definitely my type lol I honestly can't stop looking at him whenever he is on screen. When he said he didn't think nobody would choose him I gasped. Does he own a mirror?! lol He reminds me so much of the Korean actor Song Kang.
Wow! Loved this video! The show is so amazing and I‘m happy you guys reacted to it! I‘d love to see a reaction to ebery episode but I‘ll take the last one too! Andrew was just suuuperamazing with his analysis! You have such a great talent for that. I totally understand Andrew. After watching all episodes- no spoilers- Yusak is my favorite. And it‘s not even about his looks. His character is the greatest of them all!
Andrew makes a good point about the fakeness of dating reality shows. I'm really enjoying the show, but I found that the most "fake" part of the show is the complete lack of mentioning "top/bottom/vers/side", etc... which I guess can be a nice break... just because it's a gay show doesn't mean they have to talk about sex (I guess they wanted to make the show as family friendly as possible?), but it really did feel like a gay fantasy land where gay guys are dating without ever mentioning being a top/bottom/vers/side, etc.
That's not fake... you have to understand it's Japan's first gay dating show... and you want them to talk about sexual positions... that's not fake... also these things are obvious and they answer it in different ways if you pay attention. Shun has a clip on the netflix youtube talking about positions of everyone using slang.
@@zombieslayer470It's frustrating when a narcissistic "shipping" community in the audience feels enabled by a purity edit, though. An honest portrayal of bedroom preferences would mess up a lot of fan fantasy couplings and parasocial cringe, and I say go for it.
I feel like gay people on reality shows back in the early 2000s is what really started to change the perception of Gay People in the US. I think this show could help move things forward for Gays in Japan. It was very wholesome.
I share Andrew's assumption and also think that the show is not an accurate representation and is very fake. I also do feel that Taehon is - for whatever reasons - underrepresented completely in the show, and I wonder why. Off course I am biased, but I do think it is because of Japanese prejudices towards South Koreans despite the fact that he understands and speaks Japanese perfectly and that he surely also understands Japanese gay culture.
Cannot wait for your final episode video I totally agree that it does not really represent the real life dating scene ... but I think even the guys on the show were also aware of how rare and unique the whole situation was ... i do not think this show tries to push for any kind of representation of gay real life in Tokyo... however there are continuously glimpses of it that just show naturally... Dai confessing he hooked up with Alan through internet, for example... the best example of how special this show turned out is Usak. I believe 100% that Usak was there for exposure and raising his profile, as he should.... even at the start he asks some other guys if they feel they are being honest on the show... HOWEVER, I really believe his feelings for Kazuto were honest, and his tears at the end were also honest. His words at the end were really emotional, describing how special, rare, unique was the whole situation of just hanging out with other gay men, being relaxed and just hanging out as friends... and hopefully finding someone you can have a connection... OBVIOUSLY this does not exist in real life, either gay or straight, so to me this show was like a dream.
I laughed when you mention that Kazuto has Gay Video face, because it was exactly what I thought when i saw him for the first time, and it appears that he has shoot at least one hot video when he was 18 yo.
Amen, girl. And size. Who gives a shit about face and body--that can be fixed. All bottoms. Behind the scenes is all over the internet: it was a frustrated-sister's-bottom-fingering-fest. Gone wild.
I hope you keep watching because I think that it felt a lot more authentic than you would expect. I think the depiction of gay relationships was actually pretty accurate.
I actually enjoyed the extras that Netflix JP puts out on TH-cam, those small chats they have in the house that don't really add to the drama but nice enough to get to know them. Usak is quite a fave not just because of his looks and physique but how he is in the episodes - that he is like everyone else, too... and that he draws so well! If I say more it will be a spoiler in the comments but he surely deserves more screen time. My only comment is that the show could've had more variety in terms of types, like there was no GMPD guys there, for example. But still, it's more of a relax, Terrace House vibe which is still good.
For me, I think it'sShun the one that fits the role of "party pooper". Ryota is ok, he seems chill and the "slow paced kind of a guy" and sometimes I feel that's seen as a bad thing and it's not. Overall I'm really enjoying this series and I don't want to finish it just yet. Tonight I'll be watching the last episode.
By pure accident I find your video as I am about to start to watch this reality show. You seem to indicate that you will only comment the first and last episodes. I wish you could comment EVERY episode. That would be fun !
Dearest Andrew and beloved Meng thank-you for doing this. I have watched all of the episodes now. I enjoyed it for what it was. Could you comment at all on the quality of the subtitles? I am feeling that some of them don't really convert the meaning properly.
sorry something else. Taeheon. As all realities, this show has writers and editors that have to create narratives. Taeheon was not really into anyone so the writers focused on his coming out story. I do not think the show did him dirty. They just did what they could. Dai and Shun story was more juicy and more like a drama. After all they are super young. Shun might feel frustrating for some of the viewers, specially older ones... he did frustrate me sometimes... HOWEVER, to me he was the bravest, and most real... showing a negative side of his personality, his insecurities and his changing moods, regardless of the cameras... his approach to Dai felt real, with lots of ups and downs... especially for a 20yo. Kazutos overly polite approach to Alan, for example, not sure how real it was. I do not understand people insulting Shun, he deserves better.
Best thing that happened to me is when I joined different organizations in town. The funny thing about social circles is people complain they already know everyone. This is ridiculous. It is also likely they barely know anyone because they have already created their circle of whom they find acceptable. My biggest wake up call is when I moved to a new city and made lots of friends from different social circles. I was shocked at the ridiculous ideas people had about others in the community that were absolutely false. This kept them from expending their social circles because they had these false ideas of who people were or what they were about.
For me, being in contact with so many Japanese people and being in Japan already 4 times... I think there is so much courage within each cast member. Because they are really revealing and saying a lot in an honest way, that the typical Japanese person would never.
I was stuck by how genuine the positive connection felt between all the men, having had the experience together…I got the sense this was rare in their lives outside…I know I’m biased as a former psychotherapist, but Shun needs to do some work about his past and Dai’s insistence at maintaining a connection, despite Shun’s hurtful behavior, seemed like a recipe for a future co-dependent relationship…would love to see a follow-up and look forward to your feedback on the finale!
Loved the show. Enjoyed your thoughts. Havent had enough TH-cam reactions on the show yet. Please record your reaction to the remaining episodes. I'd appreciate it a lot. Cheers. 🎉
Yup, I can totally attest to Shun being efin gorgeous. ehm Btw. I don't think I have ever met a beautiful/handsome person (the top tier) who didn't know they are good looking. Those people just don't exist......Shun definitely knows he is good looking. Shun-ness is a thing now! XD
I have only seen men kissing openly a few times. It is unusual here! On occasion I do see men holding hands but even that is not widespread! Thank you for the video. Appreciated!
OK. This is a follow up to my previous comment after watching episode 2 and seeing your “friend “Usak” showing up. Although the show has terminated I have no idea what will happen next (ok the Shun-Day couple is talked about all over the place, so we know how they will end up). But I would have loved to see your reaction to seeing Usak becoming a member of the group: does he fit in ? Is he only there to be a show piece ? (I already read that he finds an excuse to leave the show before it ends…). Anyway I repeat my suggestion that it would really be interesting for you to give us your thoughts after each episode.
My first impression of the first episode was there were too many introverts in the house!!! It might be the real representation of the Japanese population, but Dai and Kazuto are the only extroverts from the get go like come on..
Just realized that Andrew and Meng are like logical and emotional parts of the same brain. Andrew always following logic and trying to explain things to the very details and Meng just follows the flow.
The show basically revolves around moody-beautiful-Shun-with-sad-backstory and sunshine-kawaii-Kazuto-with-role-model-qualities Moral of the story: Be kawaii or beautiful
i've seen the first season of dating guys from korea, taiwan and japan....and TO ME, the cast from japan has the best looking guys and the guys are all guys....granted, fem guys don't appeal to me, but even, I think, gensei, who is a makeup person is not fem....yes, even gays do have prejudices....!!!....the best looking guys, to me, are Ikuo and Kazuto....
You guys should watch Sparks Camp, a queer dating reality web series on TH-cam, set in the Philippines. It feels a lot more real than The Boyfriend on Netflix.
For me this is more of a gay Terrace House than Love is Blind. The drama level is so low I can relax and fall asleep to it lol. I love it.

I totally agree that it does not really represent the real life dating scene ... but I think even the guys on the show were also aware of how rare and unique the whole situation was ... i do not think this show tries to push for any kind of representation of gay real life in Tokyo... however there are continuously glimpses of it that just show naturally...
I just finished watching The Boyfriend, and it's really funny that nobody ever mentioned their sex positions at all. It's definitely sooo not gay.
Amen, girl. And size. Who gives a shit about face and body--that can be fixed. All bottoms. Behind the scenes is all over the internet: it was a frustrated-sister's-bottom-fingering-fest. Gone wild.
Need more episodes please and your opinions
Now this I like, great review, great reflections. Keep up the good work, greetings from Sweden
OMG I'M SO HAPPY YOU GUYS DECIDED TO WATCH THE BOYFRIEND 😱 THE LAST 2 EPISODES WILL BE RELEASED SOON 😭❣️ ENJOY!!!
I hope you keep watching because I think that it felt a lot more authentic than you would expect. I think the depiction of gay relationships was actually pretty accurate.
So happy you did this one . ❤ Love The Boyfriend. Will definitely be back to see if your predictions are right 😉,😍
I actually enjoyed the extras that Netflix JP puts out on TH-cam, those small chats they have in the house that don't really add to the drama but nice enough to get to know them.
I was so invested. Can't get pass Kazuto not choosing Usaku. Whyeeee Y.Y they would be so cute together. aewwww
Please do reaction on every episode Andrew and Meng, speaking of Kazuto is the GV type, you are spot on! If you know what I mean.
By pure accident I find your video as I am about to start to watch this reality show. You seem to indicate that you will only comment the first and last episodes. I wish you could comment EVERY episode. That would be fun !
Thanks to you I've binge watched the whole season haha Kaz and Alan make such a nice couple
About Shun, that is true, girls love him, first time I saw him I felt in love ❤️.
finally they are wearing t-shirts and showing off their New Years Resolution bods. lookin good boys!
333 Patreon members, congratz!
Thanks for giving us your impressions of the show.
I’m so in love with Meng’s shirt
Best thing that happened to me is when I joined different organizations in town. The funny thing about social circles is people complain they already know everyone. This is ridiculous. It is also likely they barely know anyone because they have already created their circle of whom they find acceptable. My biggest wake up call is when I moved to a new city and made lots of friends from different social circles. I was shocked at the ridiculous ideas people had about others in the community that were absolutely false. This kept them from expending their social circles because they had these false ideas of who people were or what they were about.
Andrew repping the Final Fantasy glam 🔥
For me, being in contact with so many Japanese people and being in Japan already 4 times... I think there is so much courage within each cast member. Because they are really revealing and saying a lot in an honest way, that the typical Japanese person would never.
Really liking Meng's shirt. It suits him.
OMFG I needed this video so much 😂😂😂
Yea I'm on the 9th episode! I love it❤
I was stuck by how genuine the positive connection felt between all the men, having had the experience together…I got the sense this was rare in their lives outside…I know I’m biased as a former psychotherapist, but Shun needs to do some work about his past and Dai’s insistence at maintaining a connection, despite Shun’s hurtful behavior, seemed like a recipe for a future co-dependent relationship…would love to see a follow-up and look forward to your feedback on the finale!
This right here!!! I watched the entire season and reunion so I won’t say too much because spoilers but your comment is 🤌🏾
Loved the show. Enjoyed your thoughts. Havent had enough TH-cam reactions on the show yet. Please record your reaction to the remaining episodes. I'd appreciate it a lot. Cheers. 🎉
Yes please more of this!
Yup, I can totally attest to Shun being efin gorgeous. ehm
Btw. I don't think I have ever met a beautiful/handsome person (the top tier) who didn't know they are good looking. Those people just don't exist......Shun definitely knows he is good looking.
Shun-ness is a thing now! XD
Shun is such an emo. Dai could knit a winter coat from all the red flags Shun was giving.
He's been through a lot but I've been through a lot too but I wouldn't go on a dating show.
I want to see you guys on the show in season 2. 🤓
I look so much forward to your commentary after the full show?
When I watched The Boyfriend i kept having this thought "what would Meng and Andrew think about that"?
Plz contact one of casts for an interview.
Yes!! I was planning to watch this show 🤭
Please! It's so good!
Well done - good analysis and comment
Interesting analysis despite the prejudices and presumptions. At least you seems to be aware of it 😊
Meng, you are the exact definition of a non confident beautiful guy… you should have entered the show 😋
My first impression of the first episode was there were too many introverts in the house!!! It might be the real representation of the Japanese population, but Dai and Kazuto are the only extroverts from the get go like come on..
They need you on this show!
@@TokyoBTM a guy who's taken and had a wedding on the gay cruise!? Sure 😂
I was hoping to see a review by you boys
Hi Andrew, I love your t-shirt !! Can you share the brand ?
Just realized that Andrew and Meng are like logical and emotional parts of the same brain. Andrew always following logic and trying to explain things to the very details and Meng just follows the flow.
OOOOOOOh we love a show discussion! 🎉
Have you watched it?
@@TokyoBTM I don’t watch a lot of reality shows
Love the shirt!
The Korean guy was totally my favourite. Though maybe my age is showing...
DOES KAZUTO REALLY HAVE A PAST IN ADULT FILMS?
I HAD SEEN SOME JAPANESE ACCOUNTS COMMENTING ON TWITTER, BUT I STILL DON'T KNOW IF IT'S TRUE.
It’s true
@@GUGUGU_GUGUGU I just saw. I looked so hard when I saw the rumors and I only found it now.OMG!!
The show basically revolves around moody-beautiful-Shun-with-sad-backstory and sunshine-kawaii-Kazuto-with-role-model-qualities
Moral of the story: Be kawaii or beautiful
Yeah. Those 2 were the prettiest and everyone seemed to only have feelings for them 🙄.
@@user-yb6tk1ru6x only Dai had feelings for Shun. Get over yourselves
Link to your Yusak video? Will you be discussing one of the contestants adult videos and the rumour another is married with children?
i've seen the first season of dating guys from korea, taiwan and japan....and TO ME, the cast from japan has the best looking guys and the guys are all guys....granted, fem guys don't appeal to me, but even, I think, gensei, who is a makeup person is not fem....yes, even gays do have prejudices....!!!....the best looking guys, to me, are Ikuo and Kazuto....
Interesting video today and what your thoughts on this show and share your thoughts on actual gay experiences in Japan.
I just finished warching the LAST episode of Neflix tonight. It was a rollercoaster ride and yeah no top, bottom or sideways talk.
Not related to the topic at all, but Meng's top is really cute.
love this show!
NO!!! Please at least add a middle video because it's going to get messy!
There are only 10 episodes, I believe.
love andrew's uniqlo ff tshirt, kawai ^^
Yall should watch sparks camp s2 cuz its a lot similar and fun
This was a GREAT show….period.
You guys should watch Sparks Camp, a queer dating reality web series on TH-cam, set in the Philippines. It feels a lot more real than The Boyfriend on Netflix.
Wanting for season 2 please
