It’s so interesting that you said in the real world, daishun’s situation would probably end up in one blocking another bc dai said the same too. He said if they had met in the real world, it probably would not have worked out bc he was afraid of being hurt in love. And that he most likely would have not pursued it further. But being in the house made him face the situation head on. It seems like a very fateful encounter tbh. Good for them

Dai treated Shun differently because he liked him. This is what you supposed to do with a person, who is your romantic interest. 🤔

Right! I definitely noticed that when he got upset with Ikuo. He wouldn't have acted so strong if it was Shun instead, because that's the difference between friendship and romantic attraction. I think it's romantic that Dai is gentler with Shun than everyone else 💗💗

100% disagree that Dai was nasty. I don't think he was disrespectful to anyone. Even when Ikuo tried to interfere with the issue between Dai and Shun, I felt that Dai handled it in an adult manner.

Yes! Dai was my favorite. Why anyone would say that about him is not dealing in reality. The nasty one was Shun in the way he treated Dai. I would have left Shun’s ass in the dirt a long time ago.

@@kuroneko7022 It appears many people see Shun as attractive however, he comes off as too feminine/passive to me where Dai seems more in-tune with his emotions/wants. When Dai smiles at you, it is hard to say no to his wishes. Dai has that manly energy that another manly male would find attractive.

Dai was quite cool, and Shun isn't evil, but if your gay and have dating experience you realize all to well of the tramas that your fellow gays be carrying around and lobing on your lap. I see a lot of teenage me in Shun. I'm adopted, had abandonment, darker tramas, and imposter syndrome in a Christian family dynamic. I was a absolute pain till maybe 21. Started drinking, dating, partying. Met an old guy thar just told me I need to not date again until I'm not a mess, and being all depressed and negative. I took his advice and realized I was mature in everyday but interpersonal relationships. So I re-examined the interaction I had with random dates, my one boyfriend, and friends. I'm no longer do self depreciating jokes at all times, I don't do down talk with my friends were we are focused on the bad. I don't want to help my friends stay in a bad place. I listen to their struggles and I talk up the plans, goals, and dreams they have shared and make sure they know I'm serious about the ideas I think are pure gold. I try to still share the bare minimum if I'm down in energy since I recognize my friends are capable of some support and not sharing just hurts the relationship, but I don't let it stay on me. Basically I'm trying to actively and healthily criticize myself and change. I haven't dated again in 8 years because I want to be solid on my own, and not some mess to comfort and be emotionally manipulated. Like how Shun kept testing his limits to see if he would give up. My first bf was a lot like Dai actually. Younger than me by 2 years (20 I was 22), out going, very high spirit, more feminine in my opinion and I then realized my attraction to masculinity was from insecurities from growing up in a very repressive state in the south. I learned a lot, and now know what I want in a relationship and that I need stability first. Sorry I'm drinking and chatty
      *I just lost the game

A lot of fans have been hoping For Usak and Kazuto to make a connection after the show, I have to admit even I found them really cute together as well.
I've seen fans comparing everybody's social media and watching who post what, when and where, so It has definitely found it's BL fan base but a lot of gays here in the west like myself find it wholesome and refreshing from what we usually see of gay men on reality tv.

I love the discussions you had about how accurate the gay representation was in the show and how the Japanese dating culture differs from the West. I think Sai also made a great point mentioning that there's also an unknown hidden population of Japanese gay community that's more into quite life and not everyone is into an open relationship. Really enjoyed this review, it definitely made me understand the members/show better coz I feel like while watching, we're missing a lot of context so it's good to hear some perspectives from someone with a Japanese background or experience.

Sorry, Andrew, I totally disagree with showing more explicit things about gay life. Straight people have shows that have more sexual things and shows that are more reserved. Why do we have to have the only show turn into something explicit? That's a completely different show.

I think this maybe why some haters targeted Shun. They felt he denied them of flirting and doing what not with Shun. Tagging him difficult. Even Netflix brought in ikuo to pressure them but true feelings won the day.

  • @Oscario8
    @Oscario8 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +32

I agree a 1000% with Meng on that point.
Andrew's point of view is ofc totally valid but his experience of the gay community in Japan is not necessarily the norm but one type of many.
Being gay is merely a sexual orientation and it doesn't necessarily equates with partying in Nichome or going to s*x saunas (how do you say that in English?? 😂). I do feel there's a biased perspective here (but tbh all I feel is that Andrew just wants to finally be loved by a good man as he *deserves*!)
Regarding Shun most people seem to forget that, not only is he young he grew up in an orphanage facility and that is ROUGH, especially in Japan. This for me explained a LOT about his behavior how he has no frame of reference as to what it means to actually care for someone else and being cared for. And all the fear and anguish mixed with his beautiful face card that must have given him some nice privileges in life, just ends up with him looking moody and selfish when actually I believe it's more complex than just that.
    END OF THE NOVEL. 🎉

I think honestly (no offense) you maybe an outlyer, because you're a woman of a certain age maybe? It seems the main demo for the shows fan base skews younger girls/women...say teens to early twenties. They want the fantasy Prince type. They love the k actors, idols and models and shun is literally that physical beauty ideal. They want the fantasy type... The unrealistic beauty you find in music videos, dramas and films. Maybe that's the disconnect.

i will say as a (non straight, idk if that influences things a lot, but maybe) woman, out of the cast i'd probably be more interested in taehon or alan if i saw them in the street but even from how they were in the show, their personalities are closest to what i'd mesh with. but that might also be because i'm in my mid 30s as well :') who's to say shun wouldn't have been my type 15ish years ago tho.
that said i feel shun has that "i can fix him" thing around him, the whole handsome tortured artist with an unhappy/complicated childhood is doing a number on younger women and i think it's something we realize is actually a bit repulsive with age and grow out of. (esp in f/m relationships because this type of straight man is a manipulative fucker a good 97% of the time)

akfjkskf the way the two side eyes andrew when he makes generalizations of the boys’ personalities lol
honestly as a straight woman, there were quite alot of relatable stuffs abt how the casts tackled relationships etc. which i think was one of the goals of the show, to let viewers see that gay dating is not sth to be treated abnormally esp by straight ppl. but it also widened my perspective abt the realities of gay relationships which gave me more insights abt the community in general, most esp in japan.
i agree w/ how the casts’ personalities are so diverse yet relatable in different ways. like from the dating shows ive watched before it mostly focuses on the romance & drama2, the casts lacked personality within the show, but tbf was able to show the casts’ personalities OUTSIDE the romantic aspect. this made the show feel more real, bcs we saw other aspects of them also.
very interesting takes u had on dai & shun too, contrary to popular belief that shun has the females going for him, alot from what ive encountered at least on X app are actually more attracted w/ Dai like me lol. shun is more of like the relatable character for many women indeed, but dai is also attractive to many tbh, wanting to have a Dai like Shun has & he’s rlly hot fr 😂. and yes they technically are frm different worlds in the real world, but thats what makes dating shows special, it makes 2 ppl who wont have bothered to get to know eo, be forced to & discover that there’s more to see from the other person that could make them want to be in a relationship. and that seems to be working for them til now as theyre still dating. it’s rlly a wonder how these kind of special encounters just works for some.
anyways, this is the best dating show ive watched so far bcs it feels the realest for me yet it’s still calming to watch lol it’s shown in a subdued way, not toxic and not bland, not fake yet not triggering real. this show just put me into thoughtful mode all the time even when it ended lol im just reminded of the things i got from the show when dealing w/ ppl & relationships 😅

I found the guys’ commentary and evaluation helpful from my perspective as a western gay guy. I binge watched The Boyfriend on a plane from KIX-SFO yesterday and found myself get so much more emotional than I expected. The kindness Kazuto showed to his suitors was poignant and, as an English-speaking employee of a Kansai-based multinational, I hope I can learn from when addressing stressful situations with my Japanese colleagues. At first I thought the indirectness between the cast was weakness but then I realized the challenges Japanese society imposes on them to make romantic connections. Sad to see the show end but I too am hopeful for a 2nd season 💯

I think straight women related to the dai and shun courtship because it was familiar to them. The behaviour displayed was that of pretty young women (Shun) being pursued by straight young men (Dai). It did NOT seem like the relationship of 2 gay men at all. And Dai does seem like "that guy" that enjoys "simping" for pretty spoilt princesses.

Absolutely - and even trying with all my might to mitigate my bias, that made it really unsufferable to me everytime these two were on screen. I feel like the pairing was clearly edited to emulate doujinshi dynamics for the heteronormative public - which has more to do with the production than the cast. Then again, there might also be some lingering resentment on my end for dynamics I encountered and dislike in my own life as a gay man: the monogamous, dysfunctional pairing that keeps making up and breaking up, dragging the entire friend pool in their mess, and still taking center stage and fawning because it's supposedly "cute".

Even after the picnic with ikuo dia was the one who initiated contact for that discussion, apologising for "leaving him" while shun literally gave him a dressing down not allowing him to speak when dia said "I just wanna say one thing" and shun responded with "don't bother" and he didn't bother🤣🤣🤣... Even after the "dressing down/telling off shun gave him, he did his pov interview grinning ear to ear saying" it was good to talk to him" after that🥴
I agree with Andrew about dias unending grace for shun. Dia mentioned to ikuo that shun took him for granted in there discussion in the coffee truck and he wouldn't go running back after shun didn't raise his hand but then when the t shirt incident happened he did exactly that. this conversation was so interesting.... I totally agree that the whole show was not fully representative of gay reality and it felt sometimes like a BL fantasy... but it also was strangely a really emotional experience for me because it made me realise how much I am longing for a deeper connection with someone but how little opportunities i will have in the future... despite not being fully representative I do agree as well that the show did something really rare which is showing a side of the gay world that also exists but we rarely see... there are gays (like me) who are very boring and do not go clubbing and are extremely quiet. and it was nice that the show portrayed "the quite gay" with a positive light.. still, I think the guys in the show are probably not that quiet in real life ... I do not think the show was scripted during shooting, though the guys seemed always aware of the cameras... however, the show was extremely edited ... creating storylines or showing reactions of the members that sometimes came out of nowhere because there was a lot we did not see. One of the best but saddest parts of the show was watching myself reflected in some of the behaviours portrayed and also the general feeling of loneliness that seems to a curse in the gay world.

But because this is the time and opportunity given to be more Getting to know the person he likes, Dai says, it's okay to be hurt by Shun, because he will learn what this person is like and it turns out that he has fallen in love with him without realizing it. he faced the pain and faced the relationship, not running away from the problems like in the outside world, because this is a green room. Um, about Shun from a female POV: Yes, he is the most attractive physically for me (Kazuto is second for me); however, that attitude? Nope. I understand it given his upbringing; however I wouldn't have the patience to deal with someone like that. Certainly, I don't approach relationships the way he does. Then again, I was raised in a family with both parents and two siblings so my experience and understanding of relationships is vastly different from Shun's.

I appreciate your feedback. As a straight woman watching gay drama happen it's great to hear the perspective. It was confusing to watch in some parts, cause it's not so straightforward why each guy is attracted to another, straight shows are much more obvious that way, haha. I wish I knew more about who is attracted to who, and why, though I think it's probably not something obvious to even other gay guys.

I didn't like the implied "agism" between the 20 somethings and Taehon and Usak. It felt like they were ignored mostly; interacting with them only when necessary. A HUGE opportunity that was missed is Usak teaching a dance class to the others. It would have given Usak's personality a chance to shine and the others to bond on a mutual activity while providing the audience some much needed eye candy (Shirtless everybody???). To me the panel's comments were annoying as hell. I understand that was a Japanese culture thing, but I wanted them to shut up and go away.

I disagree with some of your pov.
Firstly there was 3 age groups :
      - the early 20 : Ikuo, Dai and Shun
      - The late 20 : Kazuto, Alan and Ryota
      - the 30 : Gensei, Taeheon and Usak
In the extra scenes and the pics/videos they share on their sns we can see that Taeheon was and is pretty close with the cast
And during the last interview, Taeheon explained that the langage was a brake in his relationship with the others. He needed time to adapt and like that waste half of the time
He expressed too that after the show he saw differently people younger than him and now is more open to them
In my opinion the biggest problem with Usak (his situation not him) like they said here : his « celebrity » was intimidating and didn’t easy the interactions. And apparently his personality (shy, clumsy, too reserved… don’t know how to say it sorry🤷🏻‍♀️) was part of it too
On the other side Dai was centered on Shun since day one and apparently (said in the interview) Shun was interesting in him since day 2 (and was the only one sexually attractive to him) so their interactions with Taeheon were way more fraternel than romantic (in their recent live the way he cuddled Dai a big part of it)
We need to remember that the show was heavily edited : an episode is the summary of 4 days. They take out all the casual moments

Then I realized why Shun got on my nerves: he was showcasing the same toxic traits that I have when it comes to dating. Well first thing, Shun is hella pretty. Some ppl do love pretty face you know. Also, he has a cute personality. Did you observe when he was with the others he was much more playful and jovial? Ppl like Shun (us) need the reassurance and undying loyalty first. I know that's kinda selfish but yeah some ppl love the chase i guess. Also there ppl who are too high maintenance are mostly loyal. So that's a covetable quality in a partner.

Finally! So excited to see this up...I have no one to talk to about this show and I was impatiently waiting for your reaction.
Well, I enjoyed many parts of the show, and thought it was something akin to Heartstopper it terms of content. A very sweet, endearing, and palpable version of gay life for the mainstream audience. Especially compared to what we would see in the States. I’ve never watched a Japanese dating reality show before, so the format was a little odd the way people would come and leave; and the commentators opinions edited in interrupted the story for me. There’s lots of cultural differences, of course, that made some of the casts interactions lost in translation for me, but otherwise, a great watch and peek into Japanese gay life. I may be alone in this, but Dai and Shun bored me and their relationship felt contrived. I felt Shun was particularly off putting. I was happy to hear an Atlanta shout out though…lol. My favorites were Gensei (adorable) and Taeheon (so hot!). Lastly, Andrew’s vocal acknowledgments that he was listening during this video…😳😉
Lastly, lastly, I wonder if Usak and Taehon’s ages played a role in their chances with the rest of the cast.

Completely disagree with wanting to show the open relationships side of things in Japan. (for now) They are still warming up to the idea of LGBT, so they need to see the more positive/normie side of things before it goes deeper. I hate to say but open relationships are frowned upon by the larger society and it wouldn't be a good look for the gay community in Japan, especially since it's not completely accepted yet. Even in the states, there are a lot of Gay Men that are looking for a normal relationship. You live in a bubble where your friends are dancers and porn stars and clubbers and the wider world isn't really like that. In Big Cities, sure, but there are a lot of gay people looking for a normal relationship.

I think Dai was in a hard spot since he got put in charge of the money. I think Dai is just very big on responsibility in a leadership role. The second time he ahd to comfront Usak, Usak was told in store it was out of budget. I would have been hurt if I brought this to you, then in store I had to point it out again, and you still did it. I would feel very disrespected. I think Dai had a lot of courage to bring that up in public. I didn't like Dais reaction the the argument. They are all probably under 30 so I also try to be conscious of that. So nothing I say is like absolutes. Might like or dislike a quality but if its my interest and relationship I believe I can learn to communicate through such issues and when to leave it alone. Nobody is perfect. Shun has a little too much trama to be in a serious relationship in my opinion. I think with Dais patience though it is not so simple. Possible thay he can inspire growth. I was like Shun as a late teen with my first few random hookups and shame. My acts were pretty crazy. Ive spent like 10 years trying to rebuild myself since my tramas were quite a bit much. Took a random older hookup after my first boyfriend when i was 22. He just vented after a hookup with someone twice my age and he told me very similar stories as mine, and that he was me. Suggested i get comfortable alone and happy alone instead of getting to his age and realizing change was needed to succeed in a relationship. Ilnow i actually know what i want in a relationship, and am single because a relationship would interfer with my personal wants and ideas of fhe future. I want to take off and travel, and not compromise on locations and length. Its possible I hit thailand at the end of next ywar and never move back. Most people I talk to end up wanting my citizenship for the US and I dream of leaving to travel. Ryota was my favorite I think, but Dai would be a great friend. He reminded me of my ex who was an amazing friend but we just never fell in love with eachother haha.
