    Well, as an aside… I talked to someone who works at the El Dorado Correctional Center and she says BTK is slowly going senile, so yay! (What a horrible person to send that awful letter).

      I'd want him to go senile only if he's still getting pleasure from his memory, which I'm sure he did. Otherwise I want him as miserable as possible in every moment.

      Why do you say yay? Going senile isn't a bad fate, if he doesn't know what, where or how his crimes and where he even is or the crimes he committed isn't bad.... Haven't you ever heard the saying " ignorance is bliss" well it really is in the fate of senility,it's the family that suffers not the senile person

      @@KellyHill-gg9xr I say yay bc he was really big on taking pics and keeping the memory of the events alive in his head. He’s losing those moments bc he’s losing his mind. He’s a shitty person and his family has distanced themselves from him. He’s all alone, and soon he won’t be able to remember his crimes. Yay!

    Something stood out to me in his statement. He said after he found the first body in the hot tub that he continued further into the house, "to get help."
    If you found a murder victim, would you go further into the home to get help? Or run outside to a neighbor's house to get help? I would be worried the killer was still inside. Obviously this wasn't an issue because he knew who the killer was.

      @yolandawilson6619 Most definitely. It definitely couldn't be argued in court. But I believe it's one of those details you tuck in your pocket during the investigation. Was he the kind of guy who would run into a burning building, or would flight kick in?
      People will tell you all kinds of things about themselves if you let them.

    What a travesty! What a STUPID jury! I guy admits being at the murder scene, he is found states away having done a bunk with the victims' car and without contacting his own family, and there is absolutely NO evidence of anyone else being involved. Yet this jury found him not guilty? He was such an upstanding guy? I want to puke!

      What are you talking about? He contacted family. Thats how they caught him. Theres certainly something weird going on. I mean if he did it why on earth would he take the victims car when he had his own? Also traumatic events can bring on amnesia or repressed memories. Id say stumbling onto the scene of an active triple murder would qualify.

  • @orangehoof
    @orangehoof 2 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    It's a shame this happened before DNA evidence was regularly gathered and stored. If there was semen collected from Kelli, that would have unlocked this case presuming Wichita police had properly stored the evidence. IMO, Kelli's nude body is the key to the case. It strongly suggests a sexual attack, whether she was alive or dead (if there was no struggle, I'd guess dead), This gives you three avenues of inquiry. If it was Butterworth's semen, case closed. I found it odd that he remembered two of the bodies but not Kelli's. Perhaps his conscience won't allow him to remember this murder. The second avenue would be Kelli's boyfriend. Where was he, what did he know, has he any alibi, etc? The last would be some random criminal but, why then, did this man not rob whatever he could while he was there? Further, where is the ballistics? Did it match any weapon? There's a chance a cold case unit could re-examine the case but, otherwise, it seems this will never be solved without a confession.

    • @lisas8244
      @lisas8244 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @orangehoof Great analysis! No wonder the Wichita police didn't solve the BTK case for so long. This reeks of a stalker becoming sexually obsessed with Kelli and killing all family members to get to her. I do not see it as an MO for a boyfriend. Butterworth's memory lapse certainly muddies the waters. I have never heard of another murder case in which someone, upon discovering bodies, develops amnesia and drives to another state. You're right in that Kelli being the only one left naked is the key to this case. There have been several cases in which a person stalks a young female victim for sexual purposes and then kills the family to have access to his prey. Shasta Groene is one case. I don't know what is left of the evidence or if a cold case squad would have anything to work with. However, I don't know how present Wichita police can just leave loose ends to a horrific murder case and why they are not trying to seek justice.

    He ran away because he thought what if it was my kids? That would cause the OPPOSITE effect! The excuse for having the car is ridiculous! To hear later in the story that he wrote the letter to the wife jogged my mind but I couldn’t remember the details. I recalled he wrote a letter to a victim to admire the work of another killer, but I did not remember anything about the Fager case.

    So… he stole their car, wearing different clothes when he was found and “blacked out”… and “remembered” their bodies… came back to work there…decided to go to the mall to buy some new clothes (while he is in major debt) drove all the way to Florida…yeah…ok. Lots of smart people talk to the police without a lawyer. That’s their reasoning for him being innocent? Strange case. No DNA?

    His story makes no sense. He heard someone attacking the daughter in the basement. He was so freaked out that he grabbed the keys and left. Got outside, casually went to his vehicle to grab his shopping and then take the family's car instead of his own??? This is not the act of a panicked man. He would have dove into his own car and left. And he was so concerned about the person who was still alive being attacked that he didn't go get help??? Instead felt so guilty about not doing anything other than grabbing his shopping and stealing the family car for no reason whatsoever that he decided to hit the ATM and skip town abandoning his wife and kids??? I would have had an easier time believing that Jesus beamed down from the mothership and had 7 half alien, half human highbreeds committed the murder and then abducted him and whiped his memory than that line of horse pucky.

Surely he would know he would be the prime suspect and the police would instantly be on his trail.He didn’t even try to hide.His van parked 1 km from the fager house with the keys in it doesn’t make sense either because it would mean he would have driven his van to the McDonald’s then walked back and go in the Fager‘s car to Florida.if he did this he was a very bad serial killer.The crime scene tells me the perpetrator was and organized one and had experience.I don’t believe Butterworth was the perpetrator.

    *jaw drops to the floor* I thought that last name sounded familiar. Stuart is where I was born & still live. We aren't a real big town, but in 1987 it was still a small town. It was a big deal to have something like this happen. He should've gone further south to get lost in a crowd.

    This is just such a...weird case.
    Sounds like, even if Butterworth DID do it, the police basically did no actual investigation after they decided he was a suspect. So no real evidence for anything other than stealing a car.
    And if it was a money motive, why would he not have ransacked the place? Seems more as though someone had a vendetta for the family

    • @unde.rtheashtree
      @unde.rtheashtree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very weird- from all accounts the entire thing stopped with him. The defense (even though it’s their job) basically claimed police didn’t go beyond him and I couldn’t find anything to indicate they did other than statements where police claimed they did after the case was closed.

    • @shakenbake216row6
      @shakenbake216row6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right this was an absolute fail from our justice system, killers are convicted by strong circumstantial evidence all the time and the circumstantial evidence here is off the fucking charts, he for sure had a big part in this how be we don’t know but his excuse to begin with was clearly a lie to give him time to come up with a better lie.

    • @shakenbake216row6
      @shakenbake216row6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also at the very least if his entire story is true then he’s guilty of seeing a little girl dead while another is screaming for help and not helping them and I get if he was to scared to help I still think it’s super cowardly and not what we as men should do but the very least he should’ve called the police because there was a chance to save them but he didn’t even call the police so just based off that I think they should’ve convicted him.

    love your videos, my only question in regards to this case is why they didn’t keep examining the dna sample that was left behind? It couldn’t belong to the father since it was baby making juice left behind. I ask this because many cases of the past was solved later on because of dna samples that was left behind & how advanced technology is in regards to dna. Love your video & those cops should be fired

    • @unde.rtheashtree
      @unde.rtheashtree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks so much! I think the issue as far the DNA goes is law enforcement pretty much put a stop at Butterworth. They claimed they ruled out all of these other suspects but I could find nearly 0 information to show this. According to the defense once police zoned in on Butterworth they didn’t go beyond him so much so they closed the case with no convictions because they are that convinced he did it. But I found no additional information that evidence was even tested beyond him.

    Who is in charge of the investigation Barney fife? absolutely zero this guy’s reaction makes any sense at all. If he finds the dead chick floating in the tall tub, he finds the dead dead on the floor. He realizes that he’s cold and wet from trying to pull the girl out? So he changes into his T-shirt, loafers and slacks. There’s somebody in trouble then sprints outside takes their car and box it to Florida, leaving his whole life behind? I think he attacked the girl because she was having a naked, hot tub. Dad busted him he shoots the dead sister comes out to investigate, he Tyser up and tries to strangle or throws her in the hot tub to finish the job and get the fuck out of Dodge. They makes the mistake of calling his wife some bullshit story.

  • @LittleRedTeaCake

    I feel like he did it, even though the DNA didn't match. I can't exactly explain why other than, even when in shock, and flight instinct kicks in, it doesn't normally entail changing clothes and getting money from an ATM. Also the fact that he drove right past his house, something he could easily do in a shocked, dissociated state (most people actual experience dissociation when they are driving familiar routes, which is why driving home sometimes feels as if you blinked and you're there) he would have instinctively gone to the place he felt safest: home. I call bull. Plus his timeline is iffy. Did the people he run into while shopping ever come forward and were his witnesses? Was there a time stamp/receipt/store clerk that could place him at the store when he said he was there? Although I am annoyed that the police didn't look into other leads either.

    Did the police do a thorough check on the daughter's boyfriend since the accused believed he was the one who might have been there in the Fagan house the same time he was? That fingerprint/semen sample or whatever it was the police recovered at the crime scene that did not belong to the accused--did it belong to the boyfriend?

    What's most interesting to me is... the van was moved from the crime scene and parked next to a McDonald's
    Who moved the van and why? It doesn't make sense that someone would move a vehicle that doesn't belong to them. And, I believe a murderer would leave in the same fashion in which they arrived (on foot, bike or their own car) and not take someone else vehicle - period. So, whomever moved the van (to the nearby McDonald's) is where my mind goes. All other details are a distraction or can't be proven for whatever reason.
    BTW... Richard Ney was my neighbor growing-up, when this case went to trial in the 1980's.
