I've had a folding phone for the past 3 years and I've had the fold 3 for two years now. My thoughts are that Apple wants you to buy two iPads one for home one for on the go and an iPhone with an Apple watch and a pair of AirPods. See where I'm going with this. If Apple were able to create a foldable as thin (when closed) and heavy as a normal iPhone, with the same camera performance, chipset performance and battery endurance as their normal iPhones then yeah that would be pretty innovative. Apple is always hesitant to make "combo devices" though because they rather make a good phone and a good tablet vs a good phone-tablet combo (which is what a folding phone is). In addition to that I would see it a folding phone something to replace ipad mini, however a duel screen device like the Surface Duo is an Apple product I would buy ( if the price was reasonable) cause the only problem with the Duo was software and one thing about Apple is that software is where they excel. At first, I wanted the white (porcelain) color of the Pixel Fold. Get the one Michael Fisher is getting. But now I'm preferring the black (or obsidian) one. I know it looks boring but I prefer the matte back finish. And when it's unfolded, it looks better. If it's white, it looks odd when opened up contrasting to the black front.
My iPhone 7, Pixel 3, and Z Flip 3 are matte black. It's a little boring but it never fails as black matches well with any other colored case. Considering I'm getting a case for it which is usually dark, getting it in either color wouldn't matter. But I'm digging that obsidian more. I'm not getting that clear case any more. The obsidian is more uniformed to the black front when opened.
I was ok with the silver iPhone X and white backs. But for a book-style foldable, it just doesn't look right when opened and the colors are so contrasting. The Pixel Fold is basically the Surface Duo 3 if Microsoft went foldable.

I guess that's a fundamental difference, as part of a younger generation like myself, we all see electronics, especially phones, as consumables. My current idea is "use it until it breaks" and that is a consumable mindset. I don't think in terms of "It will last 10 years" because I start saving for my next phone immediately after getting whatever I use, and when the front and back glass crack, and my battery is no longer holding 4ish hours of charge, I go to the newer, more exciting technology in that usually 3-4 years later. I just recently purchased an iPhone 14 pro max, and I didn't really go for the Samsung foldable because I'm not really embedded in the google ecosystem, besides it's price point. My manager Fred however bought the Samsung foldable and he uses it every day for business, and it seems to suit him just fine, so he has the best of both worlds where I would need a phone AND a tablet, but he has both in one with one data package from his carrier. Does that mean I would go for a foldable apple iPhone? I might consider it, I would wait for reviews to come out and to get a little into the coverage before making an informed decision, but it would be nice to have the combination of an iPhone AND a iPad. I would strongly consider it.

The conversation is about foldable phones and I must say that if a product like the one talked about does eventually make it to market and it is widely adopted, it would be good for both Apple AND Samsung. I'd love to see a folding iPhone, but Apple seems to shy away from certain innovations in favor of not killing off existing products. For example, a touch screen Mac would likely kill larger iPad. Likewise, a folding iPhone would kill the smaller iPads... Today, Apple can sell iPhones, iPads, and Macs because key features don't overlap.
If iPhone sells dropped, then they'd launch the folding iPhone, which they likely already have developed. Same is true of Mac books. If their sells dropped, then they'd launch touch screen Macs.
So IMHO, demand will drive innovation... right now, they have a good demand for their feature absent products.

    • @PSYCHOV3N0M

A foldable iPhone wouldn't kill the iPad Mini because not everyone wants a foldable device.
They can literally coexist within Apple's product offerings.
The one thing that could potentially kill another product is MacOS on iPads. THAT would at least tarnish Macbook sales.

I honestly think you’re onto something. Although this is true, it’s also probably because Apple wants to introduce in screen Touch ID and all screen iPhone before the iPhone Fold. Microsoft Surface Duo was a flop, as was their second attempt. I use my fold 4 as my main driver for work, and the split screen abilities have improved my workflow exponentially.
Being able to pin 2 or 3 screens (sometimes more) to get work done is a gamechanger. The fact that the iPhone still can't properly multitask is inexcusable, especially with the phablet sizes available since the XS Max launched, and that was 2018.
If this new iOS announcement fails to impress outside of gimmicks and flashy marketing, I'm going to move away from the platform fully once my X stops working.

Making a phone that’s actually easy to hold and not so delicate you’re afraid to expose it to the outside world. What would, at least for the few, is for apple to retro themselves. The smooth and curvaceous original iPhone was actually made to hold. It fit the palm of a HumanHand. If screen size is an issue, the 14 pro and pro max are fine. Just give it a form factor that actually fits the HumanForm. That’s my two cents. Or in the case of a mobile phone, $799+

When I'm hungry, one of my favourite things to do is to chop a block of cheese and fold a slice of bread around it-chop, fold, done-and I have protein, carbs, and fats in 5 seconds flat, in a delicious, cost effective, high fibre meal for one, that I take great pleasure in, again, for five seconds flat. If you could apply this efficiency to an app on a smartphone due to the fact that it folded, then I may see a point in it. Otherwise, the last folding smartphone I saw didn't work out too well; my mum had it in her back pocket as she sat down. To be fair, I don't think any brand of smartphone is tested to withstand that kind of extreme pressure and strain, but needless to say, it certainly looked and worked a lot better when it wasn't folded! The phone died, but on the plus side, my mum's now gone on a diet-so more effective than any fitness app whilst the phone lived! In conclusion, if a folding phone is the 'twist', then ironically, I'll 'fold' thank you.
