      You think that's cool? How he got the part, in front of George Lucas, was that in a meditation scene, he gritted his teeth and grunted and it was difficult for him. When the director asked him why, in all the takes, he did the meditation the same, his response: "Because Vader wouldn't show his apprentice any peace and how to meditate, so it's a struggle for him. He was trained in the dark side, so 'peace' is a foreign concept to him." Shocked everyone, landed the part. NERDING OUT got him the part of Starkiller. 🤯

    5:53 Fun fact: The Force Unleashed came out in 2008, the same year the Clone Wars movie came out and the series premiered.
    One featured a new apprentice for Darth Vader, the other a new padawan for Anakin Skywalker.
    And both held their lightsabers in a reverse position.
    And as far as I remember, this was pure coincidence, according to the devs.

    I still remember the hype building up to this game, especially all of the content they put out about the game's physics engine for destruction. Destructible environments are pretty standard now but the concept was just starting to really get its feet under it at the time.
    In the past when I've talked to people about this game, I point out that it accomplished everything it set out to do: develop and demonstrate the technology for destruction physics, as well as the technology for performance capture, expand the limits of what the Force is capable of, and tell an interesting story between Episode 3 and 4. That doesn't make it perfect, but it does make it a success, in my opinion.

    • @saisundernarous9137
      @saisundernarous9137 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nah this is even better bro. There are only like three or four games where you can grab an enemy and just do as you please with them.
      Half-life series
      The best part of this game. Is just playing with the enemies. I wish their AI had more personality.
      If you force grip a storm trooper. They freak out, and wiggle. You can even slowly rotate and spin them. And unlike other physics engines, they’ll grab he’ll they’ll grab other troopers and hang onto them. Sometimes they randomly fire ooff their blaster. Very few games give you such good enemy interactions. But none pay so much attention to detail to a floating rag doll.
      I wish this was still cannon, but as a dramatic retelling, that way star killer was never so powerful. I like this origin for the rebellion best, and it makes a whole lot more sense than five people in a single ship, taking down the empire on a regular basis (rebels) there’s a reason the troopers can’t beat this dude.
      And finally the sheer variety and competency of the enemies is tight. Everyone jokes on storm troopers for being bad shots, but storm troopers will hit you unless you dash, jump around. Or block regularly.
      Then officers are just as weak but more accurate.
      Then finally, my boys, the scout troopers. The most competent troopers in the ot to the point they back hand Harrison ford as Han Solo. The empire’s elite snipers. They are extremely hard to break their laser lock, able to track you everywhere through every action, except your dash, and even then, they Re lock you as a target in about 5 seconds. Faster even. None of that pathetic “bad equipment, foodder, or 80’s bad guy aim.”
      I think the saddest part is how many of the trooper designs don’t carry over, and get replaced by absolutely terrible trooper armor.
      The jump troopers, float and hit you with a repeating carbine. Abs are highly nimble, they look industrial, tough like an elite and hardened storm trooper corp ready to ambush their enemies form above. Then the goof ass rebels version that EA and dice used.
      The storm Commandos are the peak, absolute peak of trooper design. My only complaint would be x they need to change the colors for different storm trooper units. Especially compared to how they only get pilgrims later.
      Then evo troopers. Perfect. Good for all environments, should be an exiditionaty force. Made even cooler by their super rare, shadow evo variant. Much better than trooper with, breathing appratus.
      Shadow guard need more love, and riot troopers form 2.
      Disney wants to do very little with its troopers or strap away from the iconic skull for more angular and sleek designs.
      Also GWs! You didn’t talk about the sheer encounter variety, trooper combinations. And the sheer variety and intensity some of the area s have!

    If I remember correctly, as it came out at the roughly same time as the original Clone Wars movie which introduced Ahsoka, it was actually a coincidence that Ahsoka and Starkiller would hold their lightsabers in the reverse grip style and not a planned parallel. The game was one of the first to pioneer Euphoria AI where characters would dynamically react to their environment (attempting to grab hold of things as Galen force lifts them, or failing that, attempting to rotate them selves in the air to get a shot off at him if held long enough, the recoil of the shot sending them spinning again) and used the Digital Molecular Matter physics engine which made bulkheads crumple when smashed into and dynamic cloth physics (which was still a relatively new thing to games at the time) Both were big parts of the TFU's original marketing campaign as I recall.
    Matt Sloan who voices Vader in the game and its sequel was at that time best known as the voice of Darth Vader's less successful brother Chad Vader from the comedy youtube series: Chad Vader Day Shift Manager (and also played his rival Clint) and should get a win in EGA: TFU2 for his performance there, because he absolutely kills it in the role.
    George Lucas really wanted this game to be a fun, "dial the Force up to 11" romp and damn do I miss that attitude when it comes to Star Wars games, the EA/Disney era's strict adhesion to only doing established canon things with no: go nuts for the sake of fun gameplay deviations or non-canon dark-side endings to up the replay value has really taken some of the joy from the games they made, even if Fallen Order & Squadrons were both really good in their own rights.

    • @jasoncummings7
      @jasoncummings7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Okay let me rephrase that. He's not as OP as everyone says he is.
      1. He spent more than a decade training under Vader, who was 80% as powerful as Sidious. His entire life, he was training to overthrow Sidious. He'd have an idea how each of them fought.
      2. Vader's main weakness is electric overload, which is probably the reason why he didn't immediately murder Sidious following Padme's death. And Starkiller was very skilled at it. The speed and agility advantage probably helped too.
      3. The Star Destroyer scene isn't as broken as everyone seems to think it is. Starkiller didn't pull it down, he redirected it as it was falling. And the novelization stresses that it required all his power to accomplish this incredible deed.

    13:47 - Actually, when this came out, bleeding crystals wasn't a thing yet. Sith made sythetic red crystals themselves, rather than corrupting an existing crystal. There were also extremely rare naturally occurring red crystals - for example, prior to Maul revealing himself in _The Phantom Menace,_ Adi Galia had a red lightsaber using a natural red crystal, which she swapped out for a blue crystal to distinguish herself from the Sith once the Sith had made themselves known again. So it's entirely possible that Maris Brood made or found red crystals for her guard shotos, or, since we never see her ignite her sabers before her 'fall', it's possible she had red blades all along.
    All of this has now been unfortunately wiped away with Disney's explanation for how crystal colors work.

      @SerathDarklands 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MardukeTheRaven That's totally fine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I can't fault you at all for liking the canon version.
      The reason I HATE the new canon way color crystals work is because my first exposure to color crystals really came from _Knights of the Old Republic,_ which, along with its sequel, are not only my favorite Star Wars games ever made, but, in my opinion, the best Star Wars stories ever told. When Disney took over, they rendered that story that I love so much non-canon, and ripping away the way crystal worked, the ability to choose my saber's color was ripped from me as well. It just felt like Disney was taking everything, not just the big things, but even the tiny details.
      And that's the other part of it - sure, it's definitely more 'spiritual' to have the crystal attune to you through the Force, but I liked have the freedom to choose my own color, to change it if I found a rare color crystal that I liked more. With the new canon, you're stuck with a color that you don't even get to choose in the first place.

      @@SerathDarklands I looked into the EU to see if Disney got "inspiration" from it when it comes to bleeding and purifying crystals and I'll be damned, they definitely did. At least in the purifying case. Jaden Korr purged the dark side from the lightsaber crystal of a Dark Jedi he killed, imbued it with a constant stream of light side energy and it eventually transformed into a yellow crystal after the process was complete.

Also each ending had a different cut scene and unlocked a different outfit

    Can't believe you didn't win the absolutely AWESOME finish on Proxy Maul. cutting the saber in half and impaling him on the wall with his own saber is just SO FREAKING COOL! also, the vader boss fight is one of my favorites in all of gaming. Seriously, he's tough as hell, and it's no gimmicks, just you vs the scariest fucking asthmatic in the galaxy. if you don't know what you're doing and haven't practiced, he'll RUIN you, especially on harder difficulties. really makes it feel earned. and the way the fight goes from a basic lightsaber fight with some force thrown in and then to a full on force battle with throwing things at each other, so awesome! not to mention if you kill vader in the dark side ending, that finisher is BRUTAL. also the DLC is just fun, even if we are slaughtering and mutilating our favorite star wars characters, it's just great fun. but still fantastic video as always, and I always love these videos, as a huge star wars fan and just a fan of positivity in general, your channel and cinema wins always remind me that there's a really good place for wholesomeness, and praising what's done right, not only tearing things apart for what they (supposedly) did wrong.

When I got my Xbox one around the age of seven or eight, TFU was the third game I ended up buying and TFU2 being the fifth game I bought. For years I played these games every time I was bored and I still do as these are some of the most fun games I've played that don't get boring after a few hours. It wasn't until recently that I bought the Dark Side ending DLC for both games and all I have to say is that there should be a follow up video covering the story DLCs as they present a darker time line to the star wars universe and show a Starkiller who has nothing other than the Emperor to hold him back.

    I played this game on the Wii. It was the deluxe version, which actually lacked a lot of things, like the PROXY fight (it was just a regular Shadow Guard), and bring down a Star Destroyer (it was a cutscene). In that version, the combat was tied to the Wii Remote, where it slashed in the same direction as you swung it, and holding it horizontally would block/deflect.
    It also came with a toy lightsaber that had two buttons. One just turned it on and off, the other flipped out four "claws", resulting in the saber turning from green to red.

Getting to really experience the story after growing up seeing bits and pieces of it. I will say though, to anyone who hasn't played the game or just couldn't have any fun with it somehow, do yourself a favor and PLAY IT ON THE Wii! The Wii version may have dated graphics and is missing a few scenes but this game (specifically the first one) is SO much more fun on the Wii! The thing that blew my mind about TFU1. Is that they literally ended up making 3 distinct TFU1 games. You had the old gen version for Wii And PS2. (Even though the Wii version had special features that PS2 didnt have, namely local multiplayer). Then you had a next gen version for PS3 and X360. And then you had the PSP version.
    All 3 of those version followed roughly the same story. Vader's apprentice. But all ended up having their own sort of take on the game and the way the story progressed.

    Galen is one of the most powerful characters in Star Wars, so much so that he created at least 1 Force ability - Repulse. It's a combination of Pull and Push in an area around the user to create an unstable mass of Force energy. Anakin and Obi-Wan did the same during their fight on Mustafar in the control room when they both attempted to Push the other away at the same time; the strength of their Force Push attacks compressed the Force energy they were attempting to direct and as they attempted to intensify their Pushes, the compressed Force energy exploded and knocked both of them flying. Galen was strong enough to do that on his own in a sphere around his own body and with enough strength that the resulting shockwave of Force energy could literally disintegrate nearby objects and creatures. His usage of that ability was (as far as I know) unique which leads me to conclude that he created it.

    Think one thing crazy about this game was, Vader was severely gaslit by Palpatine into truly believing he could never overthrow him. It's why Vader resorts to things like this but doesn't ever truly see them as chances to kill Palps. It wasn't until the dude was dead after giving Palps a run for his money that Vader realized "Oh crap I had something here..." and then goes on to try and replicate that, with the only problem being what truly pushed Galen to become that powerful as Vader's constant betrayals pushing him further and further. We start way at the start with Vader just tossing him about, then again when he just overpowers the guy and captures the rebel leaders. I do think that defeating Vader actually fully cleared anything clouding Galen's confidence, as he was likely more afraid of him than Palpatine. Vader needed it to be that way so Galen never thought to betray him, especially since he could use lightning, Vader's kryptonite.
