Cutting an Oregon Sunstone with Schiller Start to Finish. It Turned out Amazing!

  • I show some of the cutting process as I facet a piece of raw Oregon Sunstone with schiller. I cut the piece in close to the orange spot to help the stone finish with a nice orange color. I cut using the meet point faceting style and use Arya Akhavan's design "Gnome's Geode".
    The raw stone weighed 6.81 carats before any preforming and finished cutting at 1.15 carats and 6.50mm wide. I could have kept it a little bigger, but the color was more important than size in this piece. The cutting went smooth and the finished piece is amazing!

    Yo Matt! Thanks for putting up a couple of decent videos on faceting!
    I’m new to faceting myself. Picked up an UltraTec V2 in the early days of Covid and finally got around to setting it up a couple days ago. It’s been rough going so far with limited watchable videos on TH-cam. Stoked to see someone who can edit down a video to a watchable length with discernible audio, lol.
    Hope to see more from you!

    • @MattsCornerofGemCutting
      @MattsCornerofGemCutting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I didn't find a whole lot of videos on TH-cam when I was learning. Akhavan's "Faceting 101" on TH-cam is decent for covering the basics of faceting on an UltraTec. At some point, I plan on doing my own how to videos covering the way I do each step of faceting more in depth along with the tricks I've learned.

    Hello from Oregon! Great job with that sunstone! I have one that has great red color. I love how you were able to orient the cutting to get all that color and schiller. Love the reds, golds, coppers, and peach coloring your cutting brought out. I’ve got a tanzanite round that has too many top facets and is too deep so it doesn’t bring out the color very well. I got it from Jewelry Television in the early 2000’s for less than $100. It’s not a big stone so it amazes me how they managed to cut so many facets in it.

      Thanks! I really enjoy cutting the US locality gemstones. Especially ones I find myself, though I haven't been to any of the mines in Oregon yet to find any of the Oregon Sunstone. I can find little plain yellow pieces here in Utah, but they don't have any of the coloring and schiller like the pieces that can be found in Oregon.

    • @MattsCornerofGemCutting
      @MattsCornerofGemCutting  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can have meet issues from the get go when using a center point when some of the facets that make up that center point aren't actually meeting at a point. I use a 40X loupe when cutting to get my meets in close. If any facets are over or under cut, they affect the meets of any subsequent facets that are based off that facet. When using meet point faceting where the crown cuts start based off the girdle facets, any rotation difference in the alignment of the stone compared to the pavilion facets will throw off the crown meets.
      Unless doing competition cutting, meets being off a little bit is just fine. There is a little flexibility in meets to where a stone can still look really good. And when using diagrams, some are a lot easier than others for getting the facets to meet properly. It is a lot easier to be off on designs that have facets that cut in not based on any sort of meet point to indicate that facet is cut in where it needs to be, but later meets depend on how accurate that facet was cut in compared to the design.

      @MattsCornerofGemCutting  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've only used my Batt lap for 3k pre-polish and my BA5T lap for final polishing with diamond. So I don't know how they compare as far as quality of polish and quickness, but the BA5T does seem to be a harder alloy and seems like it will last a lot longer than the Batt lap.@@glennhassig6668

    Wonderful video! What brand of faceting machine do you use? What brand of machine would you advise for a beginner?

    • @MattsCornerofGemCutting
      @MattsCornerofGemCutting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I use an Ultratech V5 Classic machine. They are nice and easy to use, but hard on the wallet if you want a new one. I found someone selling a used one. I haven't used another machine, but I think that Facetron and Poly-Metric mast machines are also high end but still not cheap. Some people prefer hand pieces over the mast machines. It just depends on preference. I think that the mast machines work great for diagram cutting. I would look around for someone selling their used equipment for beginning. Or if you happen to be near any faceters groups that you can try out some machines, that could help to.

    Beautiful! I enjoyed watching you , but I think you need to elaborate on certain descriptions that you use, you say...schiller? What is that and what does it mean, same with your grinding discs, I hope you aren't offended by my comments, I just like to understand fully what I'm watching. I got kicked out of the ER whe my hubby needed stiches, I was so up in that, asking questons at every stage, I don't mean to be a pain in the ass, I'm just curious!! I think you have an amazing skill!

    • @MattsCornerofGemCutting
      @MattsCornerofGemCutting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All good! Schiller in Oregon Sunstone is some bits of copper suspended in the stone that kind of looks like glitter. I use diamond grits for cutting. My 600 grit is a diamond plated topper lap which I use to cut in all the facets on the stone. I use 3000 diamond grit paste on a bat lap for pre-polish which gets the stone to a near polished look, and then I use chrome(chromium) oxide on a polishing lap for final polish to finish up the stone.

  • @oregonaje4827
    @oregonaje4827 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you do final polish, what grit do you using?

    • @MattsCornerofGemCutting
      @MattsCornerofGemCutting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used 60k Pandemonium Diamond Compound that comes in a tube. I had been using 50k diamond powder, but the Pandemonium compound has an agent that allows the diamonds to be dispersed using water instead of having to use oil, which I like. The pre-polish is done with the 3k grit of the same brand.
