  • It's late July 1991 and i'm at Watford Junction to catch some late evening action. A lot of Inter-City workings in the hands of class 86, 87 & 90 electric locomotives along with some freight action with class 47 & 86 plus a shot of a Network SouthEast class 313 on the Watford DC lines. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

    Loved all the liveries back then. And of course the 90 and 47s.

    Fine stuff again sir. Plenty of historical loco's there. I bore you to death with it though lol. Nice catch and well spotted at the end there of 47095 passing 47209.

    Almost exactly where you were stood was where I did the bulk of my train watching with my Dad throughout the 80s. I suspect we would have stopped a couple of years earlier than this, as I think it was before the 90s and DVTs. Strange seeing the number of 47s on freight, diesel traction was very unusual in my memory, that's what usually could be relied on for the earlier AC locos, particularly 85s, though 86s and 87s were not unusual. I also don't remember WJ having that many stoppers either, and an 86 at speed on the northbound across the facing points was almost alarming in how much they rocked. Thanks for reminding me of happy times spent with my recently departed Dad.

      My pleasure..... With Sectorisation the freight sector took on more diesel than electric locos so they ran more under the wires than before. In general use days, a loco used on an Inter-City working could then work a freight overnight but that ceased when each Sector took on ownership of locomotives.....

    When the "golden era" of locomotive hauled services were numbered - swept away a decade later
    The livery may have changed but it was like it was 20-25 years previously (+90 class locomotive)

      The only real change was the DVT's which cut the number of locomotives needed.....

    Full of nostalgia. Sounds like some of the stopping trains were making a Westinghouse brake application when pull up.

    Were those parcels dropped off or did the guard forget em!
    Great video....id say the end of peak WCML captured here only slightly marred by the introduction of DVTs....great seeing some of the overnight sleepers motorails and mixed trains.great sounds too.the memories.

    Great footage!
    As a modeller, this is exceptionally useful!
    Sleeper trains are rarely photographed because they run at night, or in low-light conditions that are not condusive for photos.
    It was also interesting to see Motorail vans on normal trains too.

      I do have other videos with Sleeper trains, there are some in day light at Inverness in 1993/94 time including the Motorail service.....

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus I saw those.
      They're useful for those modelling the Highlands, but those only show shorter trains which had split at Glasgow and gone in different directions (eg Inverness and Fort William).
      I'm doing the English WCML, so I needed footage from the London to Glasgow section.

    I remember how cold the DC platforms are at WJ. Lovely film Soi, back when the railway was a service and not a business.

    3:00 47079 G J Churchwood, a former GWR150 class 47, it was one of the first to be repainted into railfreight triple grey livery for its launch in either 1987 or 1988. It is now 57009 with west coast railways at Carnforth. It will either be a spares donor or reactivated.

    low IC ridership is mind-blowing...bet that still proves that making fares less costly would benefit more folk as well as the rail operator themselves..?

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  ปีที่แล้ว

      The cheaper, and easier range of fares would be good for all... but the Department of Transport sees things otherwise.....

    That sleeper train seen at the start has a weird formation, looks like 2 Motorails, 3 Sleepers and then a lot of seats, including two BSOs... Some charter?

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, a regular working at the time. Not sure what its destination was... quite possibly a Glasgow or Edinburgh splitter, doesn't look long enough for it to the Inverness/Aberdeen/Fort William working.....

    • @TheNorwegian
      @TheNorwegian ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Wasn't it still separate trains to all the Scottish destinations by this time? Formation seems to fit roughly with the Ft William service, but with extra seating added... Which would likely make the Class 90-hauled sleeper seen towards the end the Inverness one
