  • Often described as one of the unluckiest F1 drivers of all time, Brendon Hartley's F1 career only lasted a little over a year. I have been harsh on this guy before, during and after his F1 tenure...but was it warranted? In this video, I aim to find out...

I've thought a bout that a lot of times and here's my take on Hartley: He is an insanely talanted driver. Just the fact that he managed to win a Le Mans 24 puts him in a category of his own. Perhaps a contraversial opinion but I do think that endurance races are a lot more demanding than F1 and by a large margin for several reasons: One is purely the amount of time you spend at 300+ km/h and LMP1(the category in which Hartley compeated) is not that far off in terms of speed compared to an F1 car. On top of that you share the same track with cars which are considerably slower than you. Yes, he drove for Porsche which historically has has conquered the endurance racing world in pretty much all categories but let's not forget that it was Porsche who picked Hartley along with names such as Bernhard, Webber and Hulkenberg. Hartley's problem in F1 was Red Bull/Torro Roso. Both teams have the same issue: They have a number one driver and another driver, meaning they give 100% of their effort to work with their number one, whereas the other is in a "stand there and sit pretty" position. I'm willing to bet he would have done much better in any other team.

Ok Ima be real. In F1 terms, Hartley wasn't very good. Watching him in the races was.. yeeaah. Yes red bull is a problem. But neither that or the bad luck wasn't going to change much. And to be honest its expected for an F1 driver in a dominant car to breeze Le Mans against a grid full of drivers from lower leagues, unless they face reliability/mechanical problems. I mean Kazuki Nakajima won 3 in the Toyota. No hate but I can't pretend. He simply wasn't good enough for F1.

He was signed to drive for Chip Ganassi Racing at IndyCar for 2018 before Toro Rosso called him and for whatever reason he got, he chose forfeit it for the latter instead. How bad sacrificing contract to race a top level american team for a junior b-spec team could be?
Hartley was outpaced by Gasly and Booted after only a season while Ganassi took 2 indycar championship with Scott Dixon at 2018 and 2020, and in 2021 still one of the championship contender with 3 of 4 of it's driver are on top 10 of the standings, and one of them (Alex Palou, driving the car that was supposedly Hartley drive at 2018) leading the championship...

Hartley was the only driver I've supported in F1 since Damon Hill... I really identified with him getting a second chance and being a driver who has really earned a place on the grid - rather than buying his way in. I wish more drivers would do other series before F1, like Andre Lotterer or Montoya

Pretty sure that one's just "Alonso." Fernando did unto him what Max has done to every teammate since Ricciardo. Add in Mclaren insisting their car was great and you have a driver made to look bad in a car that just didn't give him a chance. Then desperation sets in. Would be great to see Josh's take on it though.

I remain convinced that Red Bull’s reluctance to commit to having him race a full season in GP2 was his undoing. He only ever did 12 GP2 races across 3 seasons. And was never in the series at the start of a season. That would have seriously impacted on his growth and development.

As a Honda fan living in Japan, I can say many fans here appreciate Hartley's input in the Toro Rosso.
It has been frequently said by those at Honda also, that his feedback on the PU built the foundations for the Honda engine's performance today.
Hartley may not have had a stellar career,
but RB and AlphaTauri sure owe him a lot.

you must remember grid penalty " which followed a run of several engine changes across both cars after the introduction of Honda's third-spec engine.
The upgraded engine had some teething problems when it made its debut but Red Bull and Toro Rosso took responsibility for the flurry of changes late in the year, citing the need for Honda to experiment and address issues as much as possible ahead of 2019.
"You can do many tests at the dyno, but you will never create the same oscillation, you will never find out the real specific drivability of the power unit," Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost told Autosport."

He had a remarkable ability to be in the wrong place at the wrong time in F1. Solid enough driver but was never going to be the next big thing everyone wants, and when seats are so limited, a driver like that isn't going to be in a full time seat for long.
He was still a far better driver than some who got several seasons, though. I'm especially looking at Esteban Gutierrez here.....

There are 2 things I will say. It can't be understated how great of an Endurance driver Hartley was he was unbelievable in Porsche's LMP1 program. Secondly, the fact he came back from such a set back being demoted from Red Bull/ Toro Rosso reserve driver (only for Alguersuari to get an F1 race seat) rebuild his career and become the first New Zealand-er in F1 in over 30 years is a brilliant story. I think he has a lot to be proud of. I would of liked to see him have a crack in Indycar instead of going back to the WEC I think he would of done really well there.

My favourite thing to do is compare f1 drivers in their f1 races vs other races. Liam lawson is a great example of the skill level for formula series. In his first race in dtm he won the race. Alonso steps out of the mclaren after so many struggles, wins le man's, and then almost wins indy 500 before engine issues. Grosean, a mediocre driver in f1 get his indy car pole in the first few races. It does show that the level for F1/formula series drivers is crazy high in regards to motorsport World. I'm sure their are lots more examples

I feel like this video proves two things: 1) Hartley was and is a baller in sportscar racing, and 2) Helmut Marko and RBR are amazing career destroyers.
You hire a Le Mans winner and then decide you want him gone after FIVE RACES? Then promote his teammate to the senior RBR team, then demote HIM after half a season, rush up a replacement too quickly, then demote HIM out of F1 altogether after just one season? Jeez.
Happy that Hartley was able to land back on his feet in sportscar racing, where he knows he'll always be a proven commodity. And he's still only 31 despite feeling like he's been around forever. Almost feels like him just getting to race in F1 was a big achievement for him, and something he'll cherish forever. Just being able to say 'F1 driver' on his resume is enough to be proud of.
And let's be honest, he got to drive possibly the sexiest looking Toro Rosso racecars of all time. Who's the real winner here?

The fact that he had a experimental engine...got crashed off the track & had mechanical failure.......If Hamilton was in that car ....he would be gone to, Because the Boss had to take his frustration out on someone. Gasley's Dad bought his Drive....$3-4 million worth? Here is the problem.......Money........ Robert Kubica....absolutely shite.....paid for his drive. Brendon got the seat because there was a gap of no big money drivers coming. It was and always will be the same. Don't expect Liam Lawson to jump in & stay long either if he gets the chance, unless the luck goes his way & he top 10's or better every race.

So relatively unknown fact in the F1 world maybe, but Brendon Hartley was tapped on the shoulder by top IndyCar owner Chip Ganassi to drive the #10 for 2018. But at the 11th hour, the opportunity to drive full-time in F1 with Toro Rosso came in. And we know how that went. Ganassi instyead went with Felix Rosenqvist, who left the seat a few years later. However...
The #10 in IndyCar just won the 2021 Championship with Alex Palou at the helm.
Could Hartley have brought that car success earlier? Could it be he instead of Palou as an IndyCar Champion.
Gotta love those butterfly effects and alternate timelines in the motorsports world.

Unfortunately it’s the curse of the second Redbull seat (not a curse just figure of speech). The problem with red bull and now alpha tauri is everything revolves around whacking someone in the number two seat who’ll just play second to verstappen!.. no matter how good they are the cars exclusively set up for Max, hence why gasley is doing great again away from Redbull and why despite his win this year even Perez is now starting to flag and flounder, not as bad as Albon yet but I predict the same fate awaits Perez!. Redbull just screw themselves especially if Max doesn’t win this year!.putting all resources (all your eggs in one basket is just stupid)..I
It’s even more stupid if you keep throwing the other eggs out because you haven’t incubated them properly..if you keep one warm in the right environment it’ll grow etc whereas the ones left in a cold old box won’t!. Hence why endless drivers have won numerous championships after being kicked out of Redbull!.
