  • In this video my buddy Mike joins me in the garage to help me upgrade my draglink and tie rod to a Yeti XD No Drill Top Mount draglink and 1 ½ ton Yeti XD tie rod by Steer Smarts. We discuss why a high steer setup is beneficial and then, talk about the specs of the new links and then take you through the install process and share several tips and tricks along the way.

    We didn't mention it in the video, but you will want to get a mount to raise your track bar as well. Mine is sitting on my bench waiting to be installed: www.northridge4x4.com/part/track-bar-brackets/79017001-steer-smarts-yeti-xd-track-bar-relocation-bracket

      I was about to comment and asked how that worked. I have always made sure my drag link and track bar were parallel to eliminate bump steer. I am glad you are raising your track bar, it will drive a lot better when it is parallel with your drag link.

      Do you need 3" minimum bump stop with this link?

    that wiggle, or looseness in a tape measure, is intentional and is engineered to work for measuring inner and outer distances. It's basically loose by the thickness of the hook. When measuring an inner distance the hook is pressed in to account for the thickness and when measuring an outer distance the hook stretches as well. I hope that makes sense.

    I have the synergy drag link and I'm going to upgrade to the Yeti drag link soon. I have the Yeti tie rod and it's been great. The synergy is a pita to adjust after alignments. This is much like the stock dl in that it's a simple loosen, turn and tighten to get the steering wheel straight. Great, informative video.

    Good video and upgrade. I used to do all the wheel alignments when I was turning wrenches at a Ford and GM dealership in Wisconsin, and man I do NOT miss getting under vehicles in the winter time with everything dripping on you and ESPECIALLY trucks from the rendering plant.
    I'm not sure if you know it or not, but the reason the end of every tape measure is loose like that, is because it needs to take up the difference in the thickness of the hook part, when you have it hooked on the end of a board or is you are measuring in between two studs in a wall. If the hook was mounted solid to the tape, you would get two different measurements.
    Just take the tape and hook it over a board and mark off 1" and then do the same thing but this time put your finger at the end and butt the hook up against your finger so it can not hook over the end of the board and it is flush and you'll see the tape is able to slide in slightly and the 1" mark will be in the same spot. The tape has to move the same distance as the thickness of the hook to be able to measure hooked over a board and flush with the same board. Keep up the great work.

    Just as a note for people that do not know the tape measure will always have the metal loose end. it moves back and forth the distance that is equal to the thickness of the metal piece. so if you butt up or clip over with the tape measure you will get the same distance.,

    Crazy how things get cycled when it comes to steering. Late 2000s/early 2010's Synergy was the front-runners when it came to steering. Then Steersmarts became the premier company for steering linkage & Synergy practically faded into obscurity. Now the majority of Industry has transitioned to 2.5 ton aluminum sleeves and Steersmarts is fading eventhough they went the aluminum route as well but they were a little too late to the party. Now RPM are the cool, trendy kids.

    Did you have to raise or lower the track bar on one side or another to keep the draglink and track bar parallel? And did you notice any loss of up travel when the jeep is flexed out due to the drag link or the TB hitting the frame?

  • @rareearthfab5511
    @rareearthfab5511 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Better go order up a raised track bar mount. Yes.. You want the drag link to be parallel... to the TRACK BAR! Without that you will end up with massive bump steer because as the axle travels in its suspension travel the drag link and track bar will move in a different radius. This will present itself as bump steer.
    BTW... one of the best upgrades the YETI components have is an anti-flop design to the joints. This eliminates a lot of straight line play felt in a typical JK front end. Great stuff!

    Hey Brad, did you add these to the JT? Curious about how the install and if you felt it tighten up. Was there a big weight difference from the stock drag link and tie rod? I wonder if weight helps with the dampening other than if the JK’s are the same as the JL/JT with Steersmarts heavier steering components.

    “Bump steer” is a term I hear all the time but I don’t know it’s exact meaning. I assume it’s basically when the you turn the steering wheel and it feels a little loose and bottoms out on the sides roughly, is that right?

    • @TrailRecon
      @TrailRecon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We probably should have discussed that a little more in depth. Bump steer is when you are driving down the road, hit a bump and your tires want to turn direction... something I noticed before doing this upgrade. It's gone now!

      TrailRecon you mean the moment before death wobble sets in?

    • @MichaelCook1981
      @MichaelCook1981 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1111Overland no bump steer and death wobble are completely different. You could have bump steer before death wobble...but it's basically you hit a bump and your steering wheel jerks back and forth. If you're getting death wobble, I'd check to make sure everything is tight, and go from there.

    So how much of a difference did it make? I just ordered the yeti SteerSmarts tie rod a draglink with the actuator and I was wondering how much of a difference it made over the stock setup.

    • @MichaelCook1981

      Usually, but if you're getting bump steer at 3"-3.5" it wouldn't hurt.

      3.5" and I've got about 2 inches of clearance in the garage left.

    • @TrailRecon

      The draglink flip isn't about clearance, it's about improved handling, which has certainly now been improved.

    При такой схеме катастрофически теряется качество управления автомобилем на шоссе. На неровностях и кочках придется подруливать. Если вы опускаете тягу панара у рулевого редуктора, то нужно опускать рулевую тягу заменой рулевой сошки, а не переворачивать тягу в кулаке. Если вы устанавливаете брекет переноса тяги панара на мост, тогда можно оставить старую рулевую сошку, но перевернуть рулевую тягу в кулаке. Если управляемость важна.
