Thank you Davie, I bought the grinder some months ago but until now I didn't know where to start. Keep the lessons and flies coming, I love them all. Happy New Year!
Davie, ya got me making dubbing. I’ve been using hares mask so far. I put a bunch of different colored ice dub on it. Having such a great time with it and the flies are all mine. Can’t buy those. Can’t wait for nicer weather so I can get out and use my new wonder flies. Another thing, I have a pheasant skin I’ve have for a long time. I was looking at it and decided the feathers were too cool not to use so I’m making legs and tails of the luminous feathers. Too cool and so much fun on a snowy winter day.
Excellent video...it answers all my questions Davie.. Im totally sold on Spirit River Diamond brite,, luv it. One thing to say about coffee grinders for dubbing is.. they are very low cost, mine was only 7 euro !..definitely worth getting. I thought they were going to be pricey. But I was wrong. Another really helpful video Davie, thanks once again.
Davie Have you considered a subscriber Q@A session on TH-cam ?... maybe you'd get bombarded to the point of overload. Well IF you do then I have a couple I'm sure a lot of people would like your reply to. 1 What 5 flies are the best for beginners to fly tying should start with that will give good all round fishing results. So simple and effective is the essence of the question. 2 . Lets say you are limited to a days fishing in summer conditions using only 5 flies...which 5 flies would you choose and why. Why do ask for 5 flies ? I'm not sure maybe because its my favourite restaurant in Amsterdam. Tight lines for 2022 everyone.
That would be a popular video/video series, I would bet. Your question might be more easily answered by 5 types of flies. Three-ingredient soft-hackle, mayfly nymph, caddis larva, minnow-imitating streamer, attractor wet fly, dry terrestrial, etc. Is there really a restaurant called "5 Flies"? Have you ever seen anyone order the soup?
@@handcannon1388 yes there really is a restaurant in Amsterdam called the 5 flies...it's very old and established and very high quality...special occasions only on my budget.
Happy New Year Davie another great vid for the novice, but could have used a bit of Health & Safety. Not good to put your fingers into the grinder without unpluging it.
Great video as usual very informative content I had no idea fnf made dubbing all I can seem to find by them is Chenille what’s the name of that product if you don’t mind me asking cheers
Do you use scissors over clippers for ease of use? Or to avoid to much under fur? I've been using a cheap pair of battery dog clippers for it and it straps the skin bare. Tends to be a much softer dubbing for it though due to all the under fur.
So let’s say you make several blends, tie some flies, and one blend works really well. In order to duplicate the mix wouldn’t you need the mixture identified? Do you do that or can you tell by just looking at it?
Hi Mark, I do have to write on a small label what furs and flash I have used to make sure I can repeat it, though I have done these blends many times over the years so I know what I like.. All the very best Davie..
Thanks! Will try as well soon.... I have a hare's hide, dried on salt and then rubbed with egg yolk and after a few days with oil. Is there a better way to sonserve? Regards Ralf
Mr. McPhail, do you have issues with Static Electricity? My coffee grinder (almost identical to yours under the “Mr. Coffee” branding) has a bad habit of the fine dubbing clinging to the inside of the lid preventing a good blend. It’s a real pain to get it out. I do live in a fairly dry climate (Nevada USA) so maybe that’s an issue playing against me. Thank you for sharing your craft. -Single Handed
Hi Single Handed, There's not much you can do about it as the more you blend the more static the fur gets..Wiping down the inside with a cloth helps a little but I just stop and allow it to cool down and then start again.. All the very best Davie..
Hi David, For small amounts using the scissors would be fine but If I was doing bigger batches of dubbing then electric shears would certainly be worth using and save a bit of time and less wastage..Happy New Year.. All the very best Davie..
Hi mate maybe you or a subscriber can help me! I watched someone's video the other day and they had a applicator whereby they applied UV glue with a brush tipex type thing anyone know where to get this glue? Happy New Year and all the best
