You are correct he did for a short spell, but sadly for him according to his autobiography the birds he regularly watched migrated soon after, even though they were not migratory birds.
I remember watching this. My mum let me stay up late even though it was school the next morning. The final finished past midnight but there were still 18.5 million people watching, the highest viewed programme after midnight in the United Kingdom. We'll never see those figures again, not in the age of multiplatform viewing.

Once people found out Turner beat Spatsky in the 2021 online final using a looped video feed its popularity really suffered. I stayed up all night watching that. Spatsky was phenomenal. A lot of credit for Spatsky's success should go to his father, a welder from the shipyards of Gdansk.Often he would take his son to work and encourage him to stare at the arc from his welder. Such dedication and foresight.
Watching old youtube clips of classic staring finals now that the staring season has been cancelled. It's a shame but I think the World Staring Federation was absolutely correct to cancel this year's World Staring Championships in Buenos Aires due to the coronovirus.

That classic 27-hour duel between Kampagnola and Nannak that the commentators mentioned still takes the breath away even all these years later. Modern youngsters like Baroni, Osiris and, of course, our very own Mark 'double-eye' Severn have much to learn!

Lots of glitz and hype, but on reflection a rather ill judged attempt to appeal to younger starers which ended in the infamous Hugenthaler controversy.
Bumped into commentator David Joyce recently and he can recall this final like it was yesterday. Just goes to show how the new rules and anti doping measures have spoilt the sport these days.. I've been a stareing fan for over 25 years and I've never seen it this bad .. So Sad 😟

A ridiculous overreaction. Staring at the top level can easily be done while observing proper social distancing. I accept the crowd is an integral part of professional staring, inspiring these gladiators to ever greater heights, but I’d rather have imperfect staring than no staring at all. The main thing is the starer’s safety must be paramount.

Staring was made a compulsory sport in Australian Primary Schools in 2004 in the hope of claiming gold in the 2012 London Olympics but, due to pressure from Iran and North Korea, the sport was not recognised and so not included. Its a pity because many of the star starers would otherwise have been in the swimming squad and we would have won more gold in the pool. Well thats what Mum told me.
I remember at school getting my 25 min stare badge for my Staring Togs from Spatsky's agent, Orlov Putin. Sadly due to a stavis synch pull up I was no longer allowed to compete. Saw Kampagnola at the Rome final in 95, unbelievable match, couldn't believe I was watching my hero in the flesh, looks alot smaller in real life though.
I bought Stare-Out for the Nintendo Wii last week. (£19.99 from Morrisons was the cheapest I could find). Some great gameplay, though having to use the nunchuck makes it awkward sometimes. Somewhat stuck on Level 12 now, though. I give it 7.5 / 10, mainly for value for money.
The crushing nature of Spatsky's victory here hasn't been seen repeated in the past 25 years, even when Spatsky himself controversially came out of retirement. Can anyone else join the dots here? it's no longer a sport, it's a business. There's too much money in the game. Sky ruined it. Too many mediocre "starers" who are more concerned with endorsements and sponsorship. Kids today will never know about the greats of the sport and the dedication it took to get to the top. They glare now, rather than stare. When was the last time you witnessed a great contest? But true fans love the sport and we will continue to watch.
Well, I still believe there is hope. There were quite a few very talented newcomers during the last two years, such as Xaver Morat or Federique Krumash that are very promising indeed! Also, I think the corona pandemic revigorated the interest of our young for this marvelous sport.
I don't know, I think there are still people who are in it for the sport. Have you heard of Litz (you might know him as Lietz)? I think he changed his name after fame in his home country and it started to affect his stare. People were always trying to look him in the eyes, but he was quite young and couldn't handle the pressure after a while. But he was phenomenal. He could stare in his sleep. A true master. I once saw him in a bar in a tiny town in Serbia, Bogoyna, I think...close to the border with Bulgaria. He looked a mess. He was staring for beer money. No-one knew who he was but even then he was still annihilating people. They had no idea what hit them. But I knew. I bought him a drink, but didn't say anything about knowing who he was. the instant gratification society of today has no appreciation for the fine art of staring, it's sad to watch this and remember how it used to fill stadiums, I've been to some small hall contests in recent years and there have been still been empty seats. I recently spoke to a few kids about Spatsky and they didn't even know who I was talking about. I blame mobile phones, they cause stunted stare development.
Spasky was obviously cheating, he's clearly sewn his eyelids open or had them surgically removed - that's why he continues to stare _even after the match is over!_ I know he's a massive star, but someone should be brave enough to call him out on his self-evident illicit tactics.

I reached the regional semi-final of the paraplegic staring competition in 2002. In these days there were no video refs. or appeal system. I was defeated due to a mistake when I was distracted by my opponents guide dog.
It’s hard to forget the impact of the final. Who knew at the time that it was all faked, and that all the members of the World Staring Commission would eventually have to resign in disgrace.

I love Phil Cornwell, I'm a big fan of him. Great comedian, really good actor, and he has a really nice, even sexy, deep voice.
Absolute disgrace. The referee should have intervened and shut this down much earlier. No one came here to see that sort of carnage.
the instant gratification society of today has no appreciation for the fine art of staring, it's sad to watch this and remember how it used to fill stadiums, I've been to some small hall contests in recent years and there have been still been empty seats. I recently spoke to a few kids about Spatsky and they didn't even know who I was talking about. I blame mobile phones, they cause stunted stare development.

Spasky was obviously cheating, he's clearly sewn his eyelids open or had them surgically removed - that's why he continues to stare _even after the match is over!_ I know he's a massive star, but someone should be brave enough to call him out on his self-evident illicit tactics.

Chris Whitty trained for many years at staring but unfortunately decided to go into politics.. A great loss to staring. He would have been world champion.

I was defeated due to a mistake when I was distracted by my opponents guide dog.
It’s hard to forget the impact of the final. Who knew at the time that it was all faked, and that all the members of the World Staring Commission would eventually have to resign in disgrace.
