I’ve owned the Eris 3.5 for about 2 years now and I’m considering getting bigger speakers for my home studio. I’m currently listening to the sound comparison of these two speakers on my AirPods Max and the difference is so clear. The presonus is richer in tone and bass whilst also maintaining the levels for the highs-it sounds realistic. The Yamahas on the other hand, sound flat and lacking a bit of low end that makes it sound like there’s an EQ on it. A lot of people in the comments are saying that this makes the HS5 better for mixing but I disagree because a final mix is meant to be enjoyed by a listener and not a producer/engineer. For this reason I say the Eris 5 is better because it gives you a real listening experience even as the producer or engineer, you don’t have to compensate for anything, it all sounds balanced and complete.
alot of the difference especially from the "richness and bass" part is cuz the presonus bass port is in the front and in the yamaha its in the back, the yamahas are meant to be placed nearer walls than in the demo for correct bass projection so its a bit missleading in this example, atleast thats what i think
I mean arent studio monitors made to sound flat, in terms of actual mixing or music production the yamahas are better, but in multimedia the presonus speakers are better and ofc you can still mix or produce with them
I think both speakers are good for mixing, if they are set up properly. One reason you hear more bass on the E5's is because the are front ported, if the HS5's where closer to a wall, you would hear more bass. Also adjusting the low frequency cutoff would allow you to get a more accurate sound on the E5's.

I just bought some e5 XTs to replace my HS5's. My room is untreated, so it doesn't matter in the slightest which monitor is 'better'. They're both great, and I do enjoy the warmth from the E5's. For me monitors should make you flow and feel the music, whereas I do a lot more fine detail mixing with HD650 cans and a subpac. HS5s have been fantastic for years, but yeah definitely treat your room before spending big on monitors, otherwise you're wasting your money.
5:18 - confluence. 8:11 - Roxane These tracks reveal an issue I have with the E5 speakers. Some frequencies, I think in the lower midrange, are just obnoxious, makes the speakers sound boomy, soft, fluffy, sloppy, whatever you want to call it, it gets in the way of all the detail. When I first got the speakers, I thought they had a resonance issue. There appears to be good room spacing in this video which lowers my hopes of this being a fixable issue. Been 2 years and I'm still not used to the sound.
you guys are aware that these are studio monitors and theyre not supposed to sound good, theyre supposed to be flat and accurate, if a monitor sounds better its not necessarily a better speaker
If music was mixed by competent producers, on flat speakers, and made the music sound the best they could on the flat speakers, then listening to the music on flat speakers should be the best sound quality as well, no? I mean, after that, you can add bass to make it thumping or whatever, but, you wouldn't say that sounds "better" at least, I wouldn't.
Songs are produced with monitors, so they should sound the best with monitors as the producer tries to achieve the best sound. I think the argument that a worse speaker can sound better due to for example louder highs might not be valid. If a song sounds better with louder highs, then the producer will produce the song this way. Then the worse speaker will sound worse due to too loud highs.
Totally agree a well mixed song should be a well representative of most hear-able frequencies equal to each other, a clean slate if you will. So no band of frequencies should overpower another. Therefore a well adjusted and well made studio speaker monitors should be colourless enough to show no bump or fall on any of these bands which of course make it sound more "dull" than when you apply post eq on a consumer level hi-fi system. Thus any studio monitors which shows coloration on a good quality and well mixed song, is not a good reference monitor
For some time I was thinking to get the E5 but relistening and rethinking I have the feeling that the E5 might be "cheating". The same feeling I have about Rokit. The sound is not flat. Is colored and sounds very seductive because now a days everybody loves good lows. But what if I want to atenuate the lows? Will I get the clarity that I have on HS5? I think is easier to be able to boost the bass if I want in a monitor which has as main quality its clearness than trying to give clearness in monitors that have as main quality the colored bass. Because certainly HS5 are clearer in highs and middles than the E5. And a producer should care about details and be abled to hear everything that's going on in the mix. Is my opinion and if someone has a good reson to disagree I would be interested because I need to make a desition
Have had my eris 5's for 6 years now, still going strong and sound amazing thanks to the motu m2 interface i got. i have listened to both yamaha and eris at the same time, this test is a great comparison. i certainly like the sound of the eris better. Id say adam ribon tweeter speakers are insanley accurate for the money.
Man did Motu m2 improved eris E5 sound?what were you using before the motu m2?I'm aware that it carries a great DAC tech. have my sights on motu as well so i find your comment interesting.

I was between these 2 monitors, but I ended up siding with the E5s as in person, I was blown away with the difference in tone. The E5s sound much deeper whereas the HS5s sound really just... flat. I know the HS sereis is based of NS10s, and people would argue that the HS5s would be better for mixing but in my eyes, it would be hard to get a good sounding mix on monitors that don't produce a good sound, (the phrase comes to mind 'you can't polish a turd'). If I had 1 criticism about the E5s, it would be that they have a slightly boomy sound around the 130hz mark, but I combat that with them being sat on foam pads and the 'acoustic space' setting set to -4DB (they are about 4 feet apart and are sat on a raised part of my desk) and they sound really good. Very happy with my decision, and I recommend them as budget monitors for bedroom producing. I mix with these and headphones, and use them for watching YT and gaming etc too. (great vid btw, you can hear the difference in tone fairly clearly).

I have the E5. It's basically your Rokits (because of the bass) and the Yamaha's (Because of the detail and clarity) all in one speaker. Funny thing is. . . The E5 shits on the Yamaha's! Did a listening test today! If you want a Rokit and a Yamaha which to me is a dream speaker. . . The E5 is the Choice!
I agree that the E5 is much better than the HS5. Actually the HS5 is even quite bad. I compared the HS5 and HS7 with the E5 several years ago. The E5 rather competes with the HS7, though I still preferred the E5 over the HS7.
And if you get used to your speakers, you can mix on them. Make sure to always have reference tracks to compare to. I prefer the Eris but the Yamahas are great for snare and vocal mixing.
I expected the Yamahas to be better since they are so well regarded as mixing monitors. Here, the E5 were more pleasant to my ear in almost every song. The e5 are cheaper, no? Being so close in performance, the E5 is a great choice between the two.
I have both of these speakers. Comments about the bass sounding better on the E5's do to them having the bass port in front is corrrect. If you place the Yamaha's closer to a wall you'll hear the bass better do to the bass port being in the rear of the Yamaha's. Yamaha's are much clearer for acoustics, and vocals noticeably. You'd have to check them out in person to get a better comparison. If you listen closely in this video when they play Confluence you'll notice the Yamaha's have a more natural, clear, and defined sound. Pay close attention to the strings when two are compared when they play Confluence. The E5's sound slightly digitized, while the Yamaha's sound more live and natural. For mixing both are great it's just preference. Although for fine tuning, mastering your mixes, and for producing Yamaha's are my preferred monitors.

HS5 has a nasty frequency peak around 1000-1500 Hz, which will make the mixes lacking mids. Also the bass is too tight, so one mixing on this wont tighten up bass enough, while the majority of speakers in the real world are sloppy on bass. Eris 5 on the other hand has muddier bass and it is much slower than HS5. Sealing the reflex hole can solve some of these artifacts, and also I guess wont cause as much ear fatigue. So maybe E5.

Kirill Storozhenko is true, i used the yamaha hs5 to do a university work and don’t like his sound, the mids are boosted and sound harsh, definetely y preffer the focal alpha 50
I need both 🙂 HS5 for the midrange ( specially for the vocal clarity ) and eris e5 for the accurate bass, low mids and high frequency balance 🙂 i already own eris e5 and its amazing ❤️

Presonus has been preset with more presence and boomi and boxy sound of low end, it may gives a better sounds but its not that much exact flat that we required for mixing and mastering because of its more presence and boasted. It sounds different on other monitors i have experienced it. On the other hand, yamaha Hs has the less low end with natural tone and its flatter than presonus. If you'll have mixing and mastering on Yamaha Hs it will give you more better sounds than done on presonus. Conclusion: Presonus does sound so amazing but we need more flatter response for mixing and mastering...
I have the Eris, but find them boomy in the low mids, find it hard to get a good clean mix. I've had Alesis M1, Yamaha hs50 and behringer 1030a before that and found them all superior for mixing.
@@Quantumfluxfield I use Yamaha HS5 at the moment...plus headphones.....live in an apartment! I'm not saying the Eris are bad, I just found then a little muddy ,but I'm sure the room I was using them in didn't help. However the Yamaha instantly sounded more open and three dimensional after coming from the Eris, definitely a superior speaker. End of day you can get used to any speaker..!
@@metroverse1111 They have a more extended high frequency and from what I remember they go down a little lower aswell. They take what is great about the HS50 but a bit more bass. They are a really good 5 inch monitor. My room is 4.5m X 3.5m and they are plenty for me without annoying neighbors too much!

The ignorance in the comments here is alarming. The Yamahas are NOT made to compensate for your not being able to afford a sub, the Presonus' are. That slot on the front of the E5 is there for a reason - to level up the lows to a perceived power equivalence to the mids in a single cabinet without needing a sub, which is a comprise. The port on the rear of the HS5 is to allow the natural taper - TO POWER - of the lows to bleed off. If you do not understand the math involved in frequencies, power vs. throw, you have no business playing with any Yamaha studio monitor - or even attempting to critique one. Engineering sound is just that, it has zip to do with what you feel sounds good ANYWHERE and that includes the record desk and mix desk as what you are attempting to do is find the best average replay image across every potential speaker on earth - yes, even the mono am bathroom radio from the 1970s someone is still using in the burbs of Mumbai that only reproduces 350hz-4.5k. How you do that is NOT by pulling your d!ck with a monitor that tells you "Yeah, man, 600hz is all there" because it's being artificially reinforced by the 150hz your monitor is bumping and you don't know how to read a frequency spectrum because you don't know how power reinforces octaves in sound. Mastering engineers exist FOR A REASON and they are NOT going to be using either of these for several reasons - but, if held at gun point they'd take the HS5s 10 out of 10 times because they don't lie and, of course, they're mastering engineers so they know how to calculate frequency stack. This mindset of "Yeah, man, my monitors are so good I can record, mix and master on them" is 12 year old kid sh!t, literal idiocy. If you are going to fool yourself and hang all of your record and mix decisions on your ear - then have at it, go ahead and re-familiarize yourself with every recorded piece you've ever heard on a set of E5s, then attempt FROM MEMORY to hit that mark every time thereafter. And, good luck. Don't be bummed when you hear down the road that your mixes sound like dog sh!t on time delayed rigs and even those 1970s am radios and no one wants to listen to it flat at home or in a car. It's as if it never occurred to 99.9% of people that how power amps treat electrical signals MATTERS more than what makes you smile when you're pulling your d!ck over saving a few bucks.
If you mixed Kamakumba (at 10:40) on the E5s to where the steel drums were clear on them then sent that out to a car or DJ rig - they'd be cutting people's heads off and the percussion of them would totally be obscuring the rhythmic pulse of the hand pan, in fact, it would be a mush. On the HS5s anyone can tell they are 2 totally different instruments - on the E5s you have to KNOW what those instruments are ahead of time AND be listening hard for them which is fatiguing to anyone. That explanation right there should wake you up if you were, previous to reading this rant, falling for the too good to be true E5 hype coming from literal know-nothings in these comments.
As limited as the validity of such comparisons via YT is, the Eris have more warmth and depth, whereas the Yamahas (which I tested some time ago) have a crisper, flatter sound that makes them ideal for monitoring. No surprise they've been popular for so many years. However, if you're looking for speakers for combined monitor and music listening use for your workstation, I'd pick the Eris.
I feel the E5's sound better but I think for certain producers the HS5's would sound better when considering mixing and the genres you are mixing in cause they have a lot of clarity - E5's really got that base response though - I imagine EDM producers would find them much more useful for mixing.
It’s all a matter of preference they both sound good if you’re mixing and connecting to your digital or stage piano, they both do a great job. Get the one that fits your needs and makes you feel good afterwards. Essentially all purchases are an emotional decision if you’re not happy with the decision you’re more likely to be frustrated and go through the hassle of having to go back to return it.
The Presonus sound much warmer without loosing detail, although the Yamaha is much crisper and flatter which is what a producer / mixer would require. I went for the Presonus as being used with a Roland V-Drums module and warmer sound was the preference but no loss in the treble. No regrets with the Presonus but Yamaha would win for studio production.
Hs5 is the best detail wise(Not too). But E5 has more bass. So I think E5 is the best with the small price. But If you have money for Hs5, just wait a few weeks and collect money for Hs8. This is my opinion.
@Acesuprol 2107 Genelec makes monitors with virtually completely flat frequency response. Also, the Yamahas are very flat. They just don't go as deep starting to roll off at about 70hz. Or you could say that they lack any bass.
Neither are ideal. Yamaha forces you to guess the bass if you're a mixer. The Presonus has that low midrange bump that makes you think you're getting bass. Having to guess bass is deadly for studio monitors. The Eris remind me a lot of the Audioengine A5's that I have.
Exactly, the guessing kills the process of ready, set, go. Once you add a tiny bit of bass to with Yamaha's then it can easily rise at someone who has subwoofer. The Presonus are bit deep comparing to Yamahas. Tough choice if you have to choose between these 2
The Yamahas seem to sound tinny, almost metallic rather than flat an natural. I agree the E5s are a touch bassy, but they have a much more natural sound. I know you can adjust the bass output of the E5s, so dialing it back for a more neutral low end should be no problem. The idea of studio monitors is not to bad, like some people seem to think, but to present a recording accurately. So a good mix should sound good and a crap mix should sound crap. The Yamahas sound flat, dry, and almost mechanical like every one of these songs has a bad mix, so it doesn't seem to be presenting the tracks accurately. The E5s sound almost neutral. The Yamahas just sound neutered.
OK. Enough's enough. Of all the 5" monitors that have been demonstrated so far in this channel, which one do you think is the best for mixing purposes? yes, my anxiety levels are THAT high right now.
I get the idea that flatter is better but hear me out: why not go for the better sounding so that you mix it according to the better sound you perceive? Maybe taking the one with the worse sound to your ears will lead to compensation in some frequency ranges?
@@patatebanine4278 From my personal experience, ( I own the Yamaha), I tested the Yamaha against all the big name studio monitors & found the Yamaha to be elite, and the most detailed, as you mention. Hours of A/B listening. The JBL series came in second. But these E5 sound great through this comparison; I guess it just depends on our rooms, or how this comparison was done, as much as the quality of the monitors themselves.
Let's be honest, we all buy the HS5 because they look AWESOME! but they have a stupid and unnatural mid-frequency boost that is just not accurate for mixing.
The HS5 are superior to the Eris, the Eris sound muddy in comparison. The Yamaha's are coloured yes, but coloured in a deliberate way to overemphasize mid frequencies, which makes it easier to get translatable mixes on small speakers and across as many speakers as possible. Main issue with HS5 is early low end roll off, which makes headphones or a second pair of monitors a must. However once you learn them , it's possible to get great mixes on just HS5..They are just great monitors to have. They look great and they are really well built aswell, top quality! There is a reason you see them in studios....they are a professional tool!
Per my experience of owning both. Presonus in my opinion works best for sound engineers wanting to manage a good mix. For musicians however who do both engineering work and playing etc hs5’ will carry better. Presonus can get loud but they can also lose clarity and sound balance as they get loud. Build and divers play a role in this. With ha5’s you can push them and they will remain clear no matter how loud.
@@oleadsr8186 thats why you need more than one pair of speaker for the reference, dont depends on one speakers. If your first speaker for example yamaha is less bass, then you can get the secondary speakers which has more bass on it, its like a complimentary of each other.

Both are good, I just bought the HS5 and they're being delivered tomorrow, Presonus sound good all around, but some pieces on the Yamahas sound so nice
The hs5's seem to be upfront in the vocal range, but I suspect that is because they've lost some bass with their setup. I suppose either would sound great in application, but in an A/B comparison, there is a difference in this video.
as much as producers need an accurate set of speakers to make music, they also need something they gonna enjoy listening to. if you not tryina be the best engineer go for the speakers that makes the whole experience fun & enjoyable
The bass response of the Presonus Eris E5 could be a bit smaller to sound flat. But this seems to be a general problem of most of the larger studio monitors that the bass tend to go berserk and dominate the mids. I kinda like the Presonus Eris E4.5 and Presonus Eris E3.5 a bit more - they 're closer to the Yamaha HS series but still have a slightly warmer sound.
I doubt that recording the sound of monitors without good microphones is useful. In 2013 I had the Yamaha HS5 for a short time. When I listened to them, I was really shocked. It reminded me of the sound of a small radio. Back then I tried several other 5" monitors and none of them had this issue, if I remember correctly. The Eris are much better. I also tried the Yamaha HS7, which were more comparable with the Eris E5, but in the end I still prefered the Eris E5. Possibly the HS5 needs to be used with a subwoofer. If the HS5 sells well and gets good reviews, then I guess it is due to the "Yamaha" brand.

hs 5 has 3d mids good sound separation instruments separation clear midh high hs5 good for layer based and vocal based genres and mostly preferable for mixing mastering and final sound test
HS5 won hands down here, flat and no extra response which is great for mixing and mastering. If you want pleasant sounding speakers for all other purposes, go for the E5
Looking for a comparision between Yamaha HS5 and Eris 5BT 2nd Gen, can anyone help with any thought about it? What about noise/hiss on them? Also, a combination (HS5 + Eris Sub 8BT) vs (Eris 5BT 2nd Gen + Eris Sub 8BT), which one could give better sound? Many thanks for inputs!
Yamaha has much more dynamic range and depth, presonus is not bad at all, but, yamaha is worth the price when you consider it for engineering purposes! That’s my opinion

yup. my e4.5 are hissing when ON. doesn't matter what is plugged in, doesn't matter what volume is. noise got significantly louder after a year of use. now i'm looking for a replacement, any ideas? i wonder if passive monitors + amp is a better thing noisewise.
@@Allann882 Unfortunately, nowhere :( The listing said "pair", and they sent out 1 speaker only. I raised hell and got my money back. I eneded up just getting the newer xt's with some stands off Amazon, they should arrive in a couple days.
I like the presonus more for listening, but the point of the Yamahas is that they are a little high on the mids, and that forces you to make a non muddy mix. This being said, I have my HS5 near the wall and I don’t isolate them (gives me more bass this way). If I were to buy again I might have gone for the presonus, but the truth is I bought them for making a mix. Presonus for the living room?
hey I'm interested in either of these been doing research for hours it's for my setup you can se what it looks like on my channel I'm looking for good looking speakers witch both of these are but I like the yamaha just a little better the e5 sounds like they have more bass and I'm huge into bass I will also be buying a subwoofer to pair and am wondering what do I need for these to work. like for a deck
Yamaha looks great, but Presonus plain and simply sounds better. E5 is more neutral, more natural and more detailed. Another advantage of E5 is the ability to fine tune it to work with subwoofer. I have another suggestion for Your room. Take a look at Presonus Eris E4.5 paired with Presonus Temblor T8. For a bit more than pair of Yamaha HS5 alone You will have a setup that will blow Yamaha out of the water. I have tested this combo and was very impressed.

The Presonus color too much the mix, but it’s smoother to listen to. The Yamaha haven’t much character and less body in the low than the E5, but that’s great for mixing. A straight frequency spectrum are necessary. The Presonus just try to be a studio monitor, but it’s a matter of taste. If you can produce a better mix with your favorite studio monitor it’s just fine.
if the sound of the Eiris is fooling you because it has little more bass, mix with both and i guarantee the yamaha will be a lot better and translate everywhere, you should add SUB use good head to mix your low end, Presonus TEMBLOR 8 is a good SUB to combine with the HS 5
The Eris sounds better as it sits but the Yamaha is designed for mixing and intended to be paired with a sub so the musicality is up top with the body and spacial sound coming from the sub. Focal has the same approach to car audio, clearly identified ranges blended by proper drivers in the correct configuration and environment.
I also want to add because I'm deep into research for my first pair of monitors, the Eris is probably the best besides KRK for starting out because they will probably translate to the average audio system (cars, home theatre, earbuds) better as we learn to mix and master. Plus you can have the Eris 5 and a sub for 500. The Yamaha will be more than 800. Just to clarify. This is a really difficult decision to make. JBL 305s are really nice too.
I have Presonus Eris 5 been using it since Jan 2018 Yea it sounds great for listening. But i use it for mixing, Producing Music. its really hard to achieve clean mix with Eris 5. the mid, hi freq are very muddy confusing. it were all so loud not dry and clear enough to hear it all. I have to rely a lot on monitor headphones because i can't hear small details. i also have semi treated room with acoustic panels and stuff And also i get a lot of ear fatigue with Eris5 Im about to sell it and go for Hs5 instead. wish me luck
They are actually really clean. I went from ysm6 to hs5. The ysm6 are very bass heavy and do not give you an accurate sound, although they sound good for general use. The hs5 are simply....good speakers but you need to adjust your ears to them. Like any new speaker you have to find the sweet spot, but they are very clean, you can hear things well, the reverb with the hs5 sounds so sweet compared to the ysm6. The hs5 allows you to hear important areas that other speakers just cannot pick up. So quality wise they are a great choice, small but they can pack a serious punch
@@MrDeejayk my friend that own a sound studio said all monitor speakers are made to be flat but they all have different characteristics. to choose speakers it has to sound good and compatible with our ears. because we use our feelings and instincts to mix and capture those emotions in the sound. all human ears are different. That's why there are so many brands with different characteristics. try out and choose the monitor that can let us hear emotions in the sound better than the rest and make sure our room is acoustic treated. we and the speaker have to be in sync. well i think his advice is pretty great

I’ve owned the Eris 3.5 for about 2 years now and I’m considering getting bigger speakers for my home studio. I’m currently listening to the sound comparison of these two speakers on my AirPods Max and the difference is so clear.
The presonus is richer in tone and bass whilst also maintaining the levels for the highs-it sounds realistic.
The Yamahas on the other hand, sound flat and lacking a bit of low end that makes it sound like there’s an EQ on it.
A lot of people in the comments are saying that this makes the HS5 better for mixing but I disagree because a final mix is meant to be enjoyed by a listener and not a producer/engineer. For this reason I say the Eris 5 is better because it gives you a real listening experience even as the producer or engineer, you don’t have to compensate for anything, it all sounds balanced and complete.
alot of the difference especially from the "richness and bass" part is cuz the presonus bass port is in the front and in the yamaha its in the back, the yamahas are meant to be placed nearer walls than in the demo for correct bass projection so its a bit missleading in this example, atleast thats what i think

I think both speakers are good for mixing, if they are set up properly. One reason you hear more bass on the E5's is because the are front ported, if the HS5's where closer to a wall, you would hear more bass. Also adjusting the low frequency cutoff would allow you to get a more accurate sound on the E5's.

I just bought some e5 XTs to replace my HS5's. My room is untreated, so it doesn't matter in the slightest which monitor is 'better'. They're both great, and I do enjoy the warmth from the E5's. For me monitors should make you flow and feel the music, whereas I do a lot more fine detail mixing with HD650 cans and a subpac. HS5s have been fantastic for years, but yeah definitely treat your room before spending big on monitors, otherwise you're wasting your money.

These tracks reveal an issue I have with the E5 speakers. Some frequencies, I think in the lower midrange, are just obnoxious, makes the speakers sound boomy, soft, fluffy, sloppy, whatever you want to call it, it gets in the way of all the detail. When I first got the speakers, I thought they had a resonance issue. There appears to be good room spacing in this video which lowers my hopes of this being a fixable issue. Been 2 years and I'm still not used to the sound.

If music was mixed by competent producers, on flat speakers, and made the music sound the best they could on the flat speakers, then listening to the music on flat speakers should be the best sound quality as well, no? I mean, after that, you can add bass to make it thumping or whatever, but, you wouldn't say that sounds "better" at least, I wouldn't.
Songs are produced with monitors, so they should sound the best with monitors as the producer tries to achieve the best sound. I think the argument that a worse speaker can sound better due to for example louder highs might not be valid. If a song sounds better with louder highs, then the producer will produce the song this way. Then the worse speaker will sound worse due to too loud highs.
Totally agree a well mixed song should be a well representative of most hear-able frequencies equal to each other, a clean slate if you will. So no band of frequencies should overpower another. Therefore a well adjusted and well made studio speaker monitors should be colourless enough to show no bump or fall on any of these bands which of course make it sound more "dull" than when you apply post eq on a consumer level hi-fi system. Thus any studio monitors which shows coloration on a good quality and well mixed song, is not a good reference monitor
For some time I was thinking to get the E5 but relistening and rethinking I have the feeling that the E5 might be "cheating". The same feeling I have about Rokit. The sound is not flat. Is colored and sounds very seductive because now a days everybody loves good lows. But what if I want to atenuate the lows? Will I get the clarity that I have on HS5? I think is easier to be able to boost the bass if I want in a monitor which has as main quality its clearness than trying to give clearness in monitors that have as main quality the colored bass. Because certainly HS5 are clearer in highs and middles than the E5. And a producer should care about details and be abled to hear everything that's going on in the mix. Is my opinion and if someone has a good reson to disagree I would be interested because I need to make a desition

Have had my eris 5's for 6 years now, still going strong and sound amazing thanks to the motu m2 interface i got. i have listened to both yamaha and eris at the same time, this test is a great comparison. i certainly like the sound of the eris better. Id say adam ribon tweeter speakers are insanley accurate for the money.

I was between these 2 monitors, but I ended up siding with the E5s as in person, I was blown away with the difference in tone. The E5s sound much deeper whereas the HS5s sound really just... flat. I know the HS sereis is based of NS10s, and people would argue that the HS5s would be better for mixing but in my eyes, it would be hard to get a good sounding mix on monitors that don't produce a good sound, (the phrase comes to mind 'you can't polish a turd'). If I had 1 criticism about the E5s, it would be that they have a slightly boomy sound around the 130hz mark, but I combat that with them being sat on foam pads and the 'acoustic space' setting set to -4DB (they are about 4 feet apart and are sat on a raised part of my desk) and they sound really good. Very happy with my decision, and I recommend them as budget monitors for bedroom producing. I mix with these and headphones, and use them for watching YT and gaming etc too. (great vid btw, you can hear the difference in tone fairly clearly).

I have the E5. It's basically your Rokits (because of the bass) and the Yamaha's (Because of the detail and clarity) all in one speaker. Funny thing is. . . The E5 shits on the Yamaha's! I agree that the E5 is much better than the HS5. Actually the HS5 is even quite bad. I compared the HS5 and HS7 with the E5 several years ago. The E5 rather competes with the HS7, though I still preferred the E5 over the HS7.

Whoa....I just sort of expected the Yamaha to win by just showing up. The E5's sound darn good...a richer sound, IMO.
I expected the Yamahas to be better since they are so well regarded as mixing monitors. Here, the E5 were more pleasant to my ear in almost every song. The e5 are cheaper, no? Being so close in performance, the E5 is a great choice between the two.
I have both of these speakers. Comments about the bass sounding better on the E5's do to them having the bass port in front is corrrect. If you place the Yamaha's closer to a wall you'll hear the bass better do to the bass port being in the rear of the Yamaha's. Yamaha's are much clearer for acoustics, and vocals noticeably. You'd have to check them out in person to get a better comparison. If you listen closely in this video when they play Confluence you'll notice the Yamaha's have a more natural, clear, and defined sound. Pay close attention to the strings when two are compared when they play Confluence. The E5's sound slightly digitized, while the Yamaha's sound more live and natural. For mixing both are great it's just preference. Although for fine tuning, mastering your mixes, and for producing Yamaha's are my preferred monitors.

HS5 has a nasty frequency peak around 1000-1500 Hz, which will make the mixes lacking mids. Also the bass is too tight, so one mixing on this wont tighten up bass enough, while the majority of speakers in the real world are sloppy on bass.
Eris 5 on the other hand has muddier bass and it is much slower than HS5. Sealing the reflex hole can solve some of these artifacts, and also I guess wont cause as much ear fatigue. So maybe E5.

Presonus has been preset with more presence and boomi and boxy sound of low end, it may gives a better sounds but its not that much exact flat that we required for mixing and mastering because of its more presence and boasted. It sounds different on other monitors i have experienced it. On the other hand, yamaha Hs has the less low end with natural tone and its flatter than presonus. If you'll have mixing and mastering on Yamaha Hs it will give you more better sounds than done on presonus.
Conclusion: Presonus does sound so amazing but we need more flatter response for mixing and mastering...
Listening to this on my Mackie CR4s is pointless, but I noticed a huge drop off in low end on the Yamahas. The Eris make my Mackies sound great! Lol.

I have the Eris, but find them boomy in the low mids, find it hard to get a good clean mix. I've had Alesis M1, Yamaha hs50 and behringer 1030a before that and found them all superior for mixing.

I'm not saying the Eris are bad, I just found then a little muddy ,but I'm sure the room I was using them in didn't help. However the Yamaha instantly sounded more open and three dimensional after coming from the Eris, definitely a superior speaker. End of day you can get used to any speaker..!

They are a really good 5 inch monitor. My room is 4.5m X 3.5m and they are plenty for me without annoying neighbors too much!

The ignorance in the comments here is alarming. The Yamahas are NOT made to compensate for your not being able to afford a sub, the Presonus' are. That slot on the front of the E5 is there for a reason - to level up the lows to a perceived power equivalence to the mids in a single cabinet without needing a sub, which is a comprise. The port on the rear of the HS5 is to allow the natural taper - TO POWER - of the lows to bleed off. If you do not understand the math involved in frequencies, power vs. throw, you have no business playing with any Yamaha studio monitor - or even attempting to critique one. Engineering sound is just that, it has zip to do with what you feel sounds good ANYWHERE and that includes the record desk and mix desk as what you are attempting to do is find the best average replay image across every potential speaker on earth - yes, even the mono am bathroom radio from the 1970s someone is still using in the burbs of Mumbai that only reproduces 350hz-4.5k. How you do that is NOT by pulling your d!ck with a monitor that tells you "Yeah, man, 600hz is all there" because it's being artificially reinforced by the 150hz your monitor is bumping and you don't know how to read a frequency spectrum because you don't know how power reinforces octaves in sound. Mastering engineers exist FOR A REASON and they are NOT going to be using either of these for several reasons - but, if held at gun point they'd take the HS5s 10 out of 10 times because they don't lie and, of course, they're mastering engineers so they know how to calculate frequency stack. This mindset of "Yeah, man, my monitors are so good I can record, mix and master on them" is 12 year old kid sh!t, literal idiocy. If you are going to fool yourself and hang all of your record and mix decisions on your ear - then have at it, go ahead and re-familiarize yourself with every recorded piece you've ever heard on a set of E5s, then attempt FROM MEMORY to hit that mark every time thereafter. And, good luck. Don't be bummed when you hear down the road that your mixes sound like dog sh!t on time delayed rigs and even those 1970s am radios and no one wants to listen to it flat at home or in a car. It's as if it never occurred to 99.9% of people that how power amps treat electrical signals MATTERS more than what makes you smile when you're pulling your d!ck over saving a few bucks.
If you mixed Kamakumba (at 10:40) on the E5s to where the steel drums were clear on them then sent that out to a car or DJ rig - they'd be cutting people's heads off and the percussion of them would totally be obscuring the rhythmic pulse of the hand pan, in fact, it would be a mush. On the HS5s anyone can tell they are 2 totally different instruments - on the E5s you have to KNOW what those instruments are ahead of time AND be listening hard for them which is fatiguing to anyone. That explanation right there should wake you up if you were, previous to reading this rant, falling for the too good to be true E5 hype coming from literal know-nothings in these comments.
As limited as the validity of such comparisons via YT is, the Eris have more warmth and depth, whereas the Yamahas (which I tested some time ago) have a crisper, flatter sound that makes them ideal for monitoring. No surprise they've been popular for so many years. However, if you're looking for speakers for combined monitor and music listening use for your workstation, I'd pick the Eris.
I feel the E5's sound better but I think for certain producers the HS5's would sound better when considering mixing and the genres you are mixing in cause they have a lot of clarity - E5's really got that base response though - I imagine EDM producers would find them much more useful for mixing.
It’s all a matter of preference they both sound good if you’re mixing and connecting to your digital or stage piano, they both do a great job. Get the one that fits your needs and makes you feel good afterwards. Essentially all purchases are an emotional decision if you’re not happy with the decision you’re more likely to be frustrated and go through the hassle of having to go back to return it.
The Presonus sound much warmer without loosing detail, although the Yamaha is much crisper and flatter which is what a producer / mixer would require. I went for the Presonus as being used with a Roland V-Drums module and warmer sound was the preference but no loss in the treble. No regrets with the Presonus but Yamaha would win for studio production.
Hs5 is the best detail wise(Not too). But E5 has more bass. So I think E5 is the best with the small price. But If you have money for Hs5, just wait a few weeks and collect money for Hs8. This is my opinion.

Neither are ideal. Yamaha forces you to guess the bass if you're a mixer. The Presonus has that low midrange bump that makes you think you're getting bass. Having to guess bass is deadly for studio monitors. The Eris remind me a lot of the Audioengine A5's that I have.
Exactly, the guessing kills the process of ready, set, go. Once you add a tiny bit of bass to with Yamaha's then it can easily rise at someone who has subwoofer. The Presonus are bit deep comparing to Yamahas. Tough choice if you have to choose between these 2

The Yamahas seem to sound tinny, almost metallic rather than flat an natural. I agree the E5s are a touch bassy, but they have a much more natural sound. I know you can adjust the bass output of the E5s, so dialing it back for a more neutral low end should be no problem.
The idea of studio monitors is not to bad, like some people seem to think, but to present a recording accurately. So a good mix should sound good and a crap mix should sound crap.
The Yamahas sound flat, dry, and almost mechanical like every one of these songs has a bad mix, so it doesn't seem to be presenting the tracks accurately. The E5s sound almost neutral. The Yamahas just sound neutered.

@@patatebanine4278 From my personal experience, ( I own the Yamaha), I tested the Yamaha against all the big name studio monitors & found the Yamaha to be elite, and the most detailed, as you mention. Hours of A/B listening. The JBL series came in second. But these E5 sound great through this comparison; I guess it just depends on our rooms, or how this comparison was done, as much as the quality of the monitors themselves.
Let's be honest, we all buy the HS5 because they look AWESOME! but they have a stupid and unnatural mid-frequency boost that is just not accurate for mixing.

The HS5 are superior to the Eris, the Eris sound muddy in comparison. The Yamaha's are coloured yes, but coloured in a deliberate way to overemphasize mid frequencies, which makes it easier to get translatable mixes on small speakers and across as many speakers as possible. Main issue with HS5 is early low end roll off, which makes headphones or a second pair of monitors a must. However once you learn them , it's possible to get great mixes on just HS5..They are just great monitors to have. They look great and they are really well built aswell, top quality! There is a reason you see them in studios....they are a professional tool!

Been wondering about this.. if the mids are pronounced, how do you get an accurate mix.. wouldnt your mixes end up with weaker mids?
Per my experience of owning both. Presonus in my opinion works best for sound engineers wanting to manage a good mix. For musicians however who do both engineering work and playing etc hs5’ will carry better. Presonus can get loud but they can also lose clarity and sound balance as they get loud. Build and divers play a role in this. With ha5’s you can push them and they will remain clear no matter how loud.
I m think the HS5 are better for mixing and recording, bcoz the E5 sound better, with big bass freq, the HS5 are neutral, i choose the HS5 for that !

The hs5's seem to be upfront in the vocal range, but I suspect that is because they've lost some bass with their setup. I suppose either would sound great in application, but in an A/B comparison, there is a difference in this video.
as much as producers need an accurate set of speakers to make music, they also need something they gonna enjoy listening to. if you not tryina be the best engineer go for the speakers that makes the whole experience fun & enjoyable

The bass response of the Presonus Eris E5 could be a bit smaller to sound flat.
But this seems to be a general problem of most of the larger studio monitors that the bass tend to go berserk and dominate the mids.
I kinda like the Presonus Eris E4.5 and Presonus Eris E3.5 a bit more - they 're closer to the Yamaha HS series but still have a slightly warmer sound.

I doubt that recording the sound of monitors without good microphones is useful. In 2013 I had the Yamaha HS5 for a short time. When I listened to them, I was really shocked. It reminded me of the sound of a small radio. Back then I tried several other 5" monitors and none of them had this issue, if I remember correctly. The Eris are much better. I also tried the Yamaha HS7, which were more comparable with the Eris E5, but in the end I still prefered the Eris E5. Possibly the HS5 needs to be used with a subwoofer.
If the HS5 sells well and gets good reviews, then I guess it is due to the "Yamaha" brand.

hs5 good for layer based and vocal based genres and mostly preferable for mixing mastering and final sound test
HS5 won hands down here, flat and no extra response which is great for mixing and mastering. If you want pleasant sounding speakers for all other purposes, go for the E5
These songs are mixed and mastered. it's supposed to sound good, not like it's in the premix process.
Looking for a comparision between Yamaha HS5 and Eris 5BT 2nd Gen, can anyone help with any thought about it? What about noise/hiss on them? Also, a combination (HS5 + Eris Sub 8BT) vs (Eris 5BT 2nd Gen + Eris Sub 8BT), which one could give better sound? Many thanks for inputs!

Yamaha has much more dynamic range and depth, presonus is not bad at all, but, yamaha is worth the price when you consider it for engineering purposes! That’s my opinion

No problem with the low frequencies? I've heard a lot about missing low end on the HS5's.
@@BlueSaturnn they are more for mixing vocals etc and for the bass with hs5 you will need a subwoofer but on hs5 mid and highs are good and true

yup. my e4.5 are hissing when ON. doesn't matter what is plugged in, doesn't matter what volume is. noise got significantly louder after a year of use. now i'm looking for a replacement, any ideas?
i wonder if passive monitors + amp is a better thing noisewise.
Not mine. I have the E5s paired with a Presonus Studio 1810. Dead quiet when idle. Quality of the Audio Interface might play a role.
U should try yamaha NX-E passive series,those speakers are cheap and their sound is quite flat

@@Allann882 Unfortunately, nowhere :( The listing said "pair", and they sent out 1 speaker only. I raised hell and got my money back. I eneded up just getting the newer xt's with some stands off Amazon, they should arrive in a couple days.
I like the presonus more for listening, but the point of the Yamahas is that they are a little high on the mids, and that forces you to make a non muddy mix. This being said, I have my HS5 near the wall and I don’t isolate them (gives me more bass this way). If I were to buy again I might have gone for the presonus, but the truth is I bought them for making a mix. Presonus for the living room?

Yamaha looks great, but Presonus plain and simply sounds better. E5 is more neutral, more natural and more detailed. Another advantage of E5 is the ability to fine tune it to work with subwoofer. I have another suggestion for Your room. Take a look at Presonus Eris E4.5 paired with Presonus Temblor T8. For a bit more than pair of Yamaha HS5 alone You will have a setup that will blow Yamaha out of the water. I have tested this combo and was very impressed.

Yes, the E5 sounds better, but to assess via a TH-cam video is patently ridiculous!
The Presonus color too much the mix, but it’s smoother to listen to. The Yamaha haven’t much character and less body in the low than the E5, but that’s great for mixing. A straight frequency spectrum are necessary.
The Presonus just try to be a studio monitor, but it’s a matter of taste. If you can produce a better mix with your favorite studio monitor it’s just fine.

JBL is my choice for under 300USD. HS5 is more like 400USD and is worse than both JBL and Presonus IMO

if the sound of the Eiris is fooling you because it has little more bass, mix with both and i guarantee the yamaha will be a lot better and translate everywhere, you should add SUB use good head to mix your low end, Presonus TEMBLOR 8 is a good SUB to combine with the HS 5
Had the Presonus 4.5 for light use and the tweeter blew within 6 months. Later the circuit board melted using it for brown noise. Presonus are crap.

The Eris sounds better as it sits but the Yamaha is designed for mixing and intended to be paired with a sub so the musicality is up top with the body and spacial sound coming from the sub. Focal has the same approach to car audio, clearly identified ranges blended by proper drivers in the correct configuration and environment.
I also want to add because I'm deep into research for my first pair of monitors, the Eris is probably the best besides KRK for starting out because they will probably translate to the average audio system (cars, home theatre, earbuds) better as we learn to mix and master. Plus you can have the Eris 5 and a sub for 500. The Yamaha will be more than 800. Just to clarify. This is a really difficult decision to make. JBL 305s are really nice too.

On the earbuds here it sounds like the Presonus have a pleasant more bass sound.
e5 have bass reflex in front, the havent too much bass

Yea it sounds great for listening.
But i use it for mixing, Producing Music. its really hard to achieve clean mix with Eris 5. the mid, hi freq are very muddy confusing. it were all so loud
not dry and clear enough to hear it all. I have to rely a lot on monitor headphones because i can't hear small details.
i also have semi treated room with acoustic panels and stuff And also i get a lot of ear fatigue with Eris5
Im about to sell it and go for Hs5 instead. wish me luck

They are actually really clean. I went from ysm6 to hs5. The ysm6 are very bass heavy and do not give you an accurate sound, although they sound good for general use. The hs5 are simply....good speakers but you need to adjust your ears to them. Like any new speaker you have to find the sweet spot, but they are very clean, you can hear things well, the reverb with the hs5 sounds so sweet compared to the ysm6. The hs5 allows you to hear important areas that other speakers just cannot pick up.
So quality wise they are a great choice, small but they can pack a serious punch

my friend that own a sound studio said all monitor speakers are made to be flat but they all have different characteristics.
to choose speakers it has to sound good and compatible with our ears. because we use our feelings and instincts to mix and capture those emotions in the sound.
all human ears are different. That's why there are so many brands with different characteristics.
try out and choose the monitor that can let us hear emotions in the sound better than the rest and make sure our room is acoustic treated. we and the speaker have to be in sync.
