Morrison’s JLA run was why I didn’t give up on comics...but it’s still slim pickings out there...
The greatest Batman story ever told!
Morrison's Batman is the right blend of Bronze Age Batman and Modern Batman. You can only read so many grim and gritty frank miller wannabe stories before you just want to give up on Bats. But Morrison's take will always be there as a testament that you can have a darker and edgier Batman without sacrificing any of his warmth and camp that so many try to ignore
I'd say Scott Snyder has done a good job capturing the essence of Batman in his run.
@@smashmaster521 im about half way through his run and id agree. Its a pretty good take on the character with really fun stories and ideas. Id also add that batman universe by bendis is actually pretty good too, as its a much more ligjthearted batman, while still being a good batman story
The worst part about the major comic TH-cam channels the noticable lack of Morrison. Thanks for filling that hole in things
I absolutely love Grant Morrison's work and this whole story arc was one his bests.
Love Morrison's mythic James Bondian take on Batman - his weird conceptual horror undertones and 'cake and eat it' approach to continuity really work for the character

Grant Morrison’s Batman is something that I had to reread because when I first read it, I didn’t get it. Once I reread it, I really got into it. What I love about Grant Morrison is that no matter how weird their stories get, I’m always intrigued because they’re so out there. While the Batman run isn’t my favorite of Morrison’s works (Animal Man and Doom Patrol take that title), it delivers some amazing stories. So excited for more Morrison Batman videos. Love the short era of Dick Grayson Batman and Damian.
Almost every Morrison comic needs a reread and I was surprised by how much clicked in place when I reread it for this video despite having read it several times before. I'm a big fan of the Batman & Robin run so I'm sure I'll get to that video sooner rather than later.
Even thought I didn’t get it when I first read it I was definitely still entertained
morrison's doom patrol is what won me over on him. i thought he was being 'weird for the sake of weird' at first, but now i see that he's just a mad genius
@@MattDraper He is like reading Thomas Pyncion. You have to read it 4-5 times and you still might not get everything. Its like deconstructing a giant puzzle and it is worth the effort.
Great video, man. This is what I loved about Morrison's run on Batman (as well as his superhero work in general). He understands the inherent ridiculousness of superheroes, especially DC heroes. But rather than try to fight against it like most writers would and try to force their angst filled maturity, he embraces it and takes control of it, turning these heroes into these immortal larger than life ideals that they were always meant to be, and in doing so creates something far more sophisticated and inspiring than the majority of his peers are capable of.
And the other thing that no one ever really brings up about Morrison's run on Batman was how unselfish he was and that by the very end, he had put Batman back in the same spot he got him. He cleaned up his for the next writer to come in. That is sadly such a rarity when in should be standard procedure for any writer/artist team.
Absolutely spot on here! And how he uses the need to put Batman back in the toy box as part of his Batman Inc story is really fantastic. I'll definitely talk about that when I get to that part of the story.
Well said. Its like Grant gets it. Not only that childlike thrill we had putting towels on our back and making up silly crime fighter names, but just the reason why nostalgia is the appeal of the medium. I feel many times Hollywood wants to sell merch and the industry itself has periods where they want to tap into every trend in an attempt to stay relevant. The beauty of Grant's style is that he doesn't put a date on anything. For crying out loud, Kite Man could be the new Bane someday 😂🤣
Although I'm not sure how or if they are directly connected, I think Neil Gaiman's "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?" is a fantastic companion to Morrison's "Batman RIP", and equally as brilliant.
Batman breaking out of the grave in R.I.P is my favorite comic book moment of all time. I'm not sure any Batman media can ever come close to how much I love Morrison's great epic.
The grave scene is amazing! Batman literally just says this story isn't too much for him and busts out. Incredible.
Growing up is realizing that Morrison’s Batman run is the probably the best modern take on Batman. A run that recognizes both the edge and sillyness of comicbooks and doesn’t shy awau from it
Grant Morrison’s Batman Saga was legendary. Black Glove and RIP will always be my personal favorites. I love how he embraces all of his history and uses them to make these stories with Batman at his peak.
Spanish is my mother tongue and Morrison's Batman was my first run of comics in English... It was a nightmare. But I was so captivated by its lore mythology and interpretation of continuity that I couldn't stop reading.
Mine‘s german, and I‘m having a hard time learning spanish and (british) english

Morrison's Batman is the weirdest Batman. He somehow manages to make the most human Batman since the Loeb/Sale books, and at the same time basically turns him into an actual god.
Not only Batman, Morrison managed to make Supes interesting by reducing him down to the level of a dying human. In 45 years of reading comics, I could never relate to Superman at all, there was nothing human enough to make him interesting. All Star Superman changed all that. There's a pathos in all Grant Morrison's work on established comic titles, that subverts everything we think we know about the character in a way that preserves canon almost like a freeze frame, then subtly reintegrates with it, adding a totally fresh perspective that layers itself around what has gone before. And he always leaves a title richer and more evolved than it was before.

Finding a way to reintroduce the silliness of Batmite and batman zur en arrh was bold, but the way Morrison did it was brilliant.
Incredible stuff, Matt! For the longest I would get annoyed at the idea that Batman is this simultaneously "realistic" superhero but also this perfect form of man that can overcome any challenge. Essentially making him a Bat-God like you mentioned in your video. But seeing how Morrison used that idea and incorporated it into a story about how Batman has been this mythic being since the beginning of man, is really interesting.
Thank you, Diego! I totally get why that duality can be annoying and with the wrong writer, it definitely doesn't work. Morrison does it so well. It's easily some of my favorite Batman stuff ever and his work on the comics after these is awesome, too.
To be fair, Morrison's Batman seems to be more lucky, then just super capable. The guy gets saved by other people a lot in that run.
The RIP "it's hard, but far from impossible" speech is one of the finest FUCK YEAH moments ever.
Act I of Grant Morrison's Batman strikes me as an answer to the question of how one stands up to evil, as noted. When we consider evil in RL, it's too easy to think of it as too big, too powerful, too unstoppable. But Batman points at evil's central flaw: its inflexibility. It has to integrate fully into a system to attain its power and all systems have limits. Limits are something Batman is all about overcoming by being adaptable. If this arc was a Tarot card, it'd be The Devil (Rider-Waite-Smith version).

I love this run, including Morisson's entire DC output and Final Crisis. It was very therapeutic for me. I read it while homeless and at the lowest point in my life. It was a great motivator and remains very close to my heart.
Super influential in how DC structures its current continuity after Rebirth... for better or for worse.

Final Crisis and its attached miniseries Superman Forever is what made me finally forgive Morrison for his embarrassing self-indulgence at turn of the century. Thinking about it now, I believe the mess of his series The Invisibles was due to how he wanted to get past superheroes. But when he works with them, they keep his writing relatable weirdly enough.
@@johnathonhaney8291 I read New X-Men a few months before and I hated it. I chalked up the hate to me not liking X-Men rather than Morisson's writing. I really enjoyed almost all his DC output (JLA's early years are too 90's DC. I didnt even like the rough draft Final Crisis arc he had in that.) I like his creator owned stuff. I like philosophy and mysticism so I'm down for heady and trippy themes any day, one of the reasons I like Morrison so much.
@@yy-hj4br I wish I could like his creator-owned stuff more (only major exception: Sebastian O with Steve Yeowell, best steampunk comic written to date). But, like I said, that's where he tends to lose the plot more often than not IMO. Personally, I consider his JLA the LEAST 1990s comic series of the 1990s. It was a lot more grounded in Silver Age roots, hard and weird sciences as well as New Gods fetishism (the latter of which also informed Final Crisis, as you pointed out, with emphasis on Kirby's original conception of Darkseid as a force of insidious moral corruption). Too many other 1990s comics were guns, boobs and blood.
Morrison gets Batman in such a unique and arguably, perfect?, way. This has me itching to reread his stuff. This is such a great analysis, as always. Hyped for more videos, hope you’re doing well and staying safe.

You'll notice that when it comes to classical superheroes, they always bring out the best in Morrison's writing. The man has a lot of vital but out-there themes that too often get lost in some of his writings (The Invisibles being a prime example IMO). But the likes of a Batman or Superman gives those ideas a central fixed point so you can see what he's trying to say. His run on JLA, with its multidimensional, science-based concepts, is a great illustration of that in action.
While I’m personally much more of a fan of Scott Snyder’s run than I am Morrison’s, it’s utterly fascinating to peel back how layered and multi-faceted Morrison’s run truly is. You gotta admire a creator who makes a character like Batman simultaneously the strongest he’s ever been and the most human, especially when said creator is attempting something as ambitious as taking decades of contradictory canon, deciding that literally everything is fully canon now, and retooling it all into a Lynchian hallucinogenic nightmare. Truly one of the best modern takes on a superhero, even if it is an incredibly different take in terms of presentation.
I couldn't say it better myself. So I'll just won't post what I was going to and hit like on yours.
It's kind of interesting that a lot of Snyder's batman run covers similar ground to Morrisons. We get batman dying and being replaced, a secret vaguly supernatural society of rich people trying to kill batman, etc. Persoanlly I think I prefer the Morrison take though because he added things to the batman mythos like Damien Wayne and batman inc. Snyder biggest contribution to the mythos was ultimately the court of owls who are just another evil secret society.

I've always been into Batman but Morrisons run was the first comic run I properly got into at early teen age. Might be nostalgia but I think it will never be topped.
He encapsulates the entire history of batman and dives head first into the more 'embarrassing' elements of the past and embraces them with love.
One thing about Morrison is that he certainly knows his Batman history.
I also believe wholeheartedly that Morrison wanted Dr Hurt to genuinely be Thomas Wayne. It would have been the perfect plot twist to a perfect story but I think DC editorial had the final word to the stories detriment. It was one piece of continuity he couldn't change.
I place this run above anything and would even say Morrison wrote what could be the be all and end all final batman story ever.
I remember that in the story the reason why The Batman of Zur En Arhh personality is called that based on Thomas Wayne saying "They'd probably put Zorro in Arkham" to Bruce after they saw the Mark of Zorro but kid Bruce thought Thomas said "Zurr En Arhh" instead of "Zorro in Arkham."

This was a phenomenal take. Morrison's Batman is my favorite Morrison run and my favorite Batman run. It made Morrison my favorite writer and sold me on his other books, like Multiversity . Great vid Matt!

I love the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh from Batman RIP so much! How genius! A contingency back-up persona activated in the event of a psychological attack and defeat. He's what you get when you take Bruce out of the equation - leaving only the brutal strength and terror of the Batman. He's only in it for a few issues, but Zur-En-Arrh is so freakin' beast mode! 🤘

When I heard you were making this video on a live Q&A I was beyond excited. Now I find out it's not one but three parts! Loved the video and excited for everything you put out in between.
I had no idea Grant Morrison had lasted 7 years on Batman. That's quite a long run. I always saw him as an Indy writer of sort so him doing a long super-hero run is suprising to me. I think I bought the first issue with Andy Kubert with Man-Bat and thought it was just OK. I liked his take on Batman/Bruce Wayne being a pulp adventurer though more than the modern dark vigilante. I probably may buy the whole run at some point.

I always come back to this 3 videos about Batman. It's how i met your channel, and also How i began reading and constructing my own Batman Chronology. But there's something about these particular videos that always make me come back here.

Love this video! I had a lot of Batman books from like 500-700 as a kid because that’s when I was growing up and every time I went into a comic store I just randomly grabbed cool looking covers hahaha. So now as an adult I just got Grant Morrison’s Batman Volume 1 and I’m reading some of those stories I remember reading before I even understood the greater narrative haha.

Fyi, that wasn't a fake arm Micheal Lane chopped off when Bruce was captured in the chair. Bruce actually slides is arm up and out of the tied op sleeve of his costume, somehow, places it in his shirt, then rips out of the trap
When I read through Morrison's run, lots of stuff went over my head. I couldn't quite figure out what he was going for but I still really enjoyed it. I could tell it was something special, even if I didn't understand why
As a Moon Knight fan this sounds really up my alley! So, the reading order for the trade is Batman and Son, Black Glove and RIP?

This was excellent. Makes me want to read RIP all over again. I've been reading a lot of stuff lately that criticizes Morrison's Batman, but this video makes me feel fully secure in my unique attraction to his take
The start of, to me, the true final best Batman run ever (sorry, but Scott Snyder's Batman is just a teenage fanfic). Grant Morrison not only collected all his history and merged it with his pre-flashpoint incarnation, but you can see he loved and understood the character. My personal favorite Batman story from his run is Batman Incorporated. I'm looking forward to the next videos.

Rereading Morrison's Batman is like that scene in Wonder Woman where the German general cracks open the superpower vial and snorts it.
Matt Draper and for a while, you even get confused with being a god. So is the way of Morrison and elevating humanity.
This is the best superhero run I have ever read. Each time I read this I discover something new in this multilayered story. Even this video gave me new insights! Just one correction, Andy Kubert is the artist at the start of this run not Adam Kubert.
This is lovely stuff. If I'm not mistaken there's RIP the lost chapters (batman 701-702) which explains the transition to Final Crisis.
