1988 Chrysler 5th Avenue: Wiper bushing and power window repair

  • As the weather gets nicer in Wisconsin, it's time to get the 88 Chrysler 5th Avenue ready for daily driver duty and keep some miles off the 2014 Ram. I am diagnosing the drivers side power window and repairing the wiper transmission bushings, which are common to failing over time.

    I have two '88 AHB/cop car versions. One Dodge, one Plymouth- one has an airbag, one does not The Plymouth was given to me, the Dodge I paid $254.20 after estate auction expenses. The Dodge is a donor for the Plymouth, but will be put back together to be used as a shop rig for my friend's hot rod shop. 100% understand what you're doing, would also recommend getting rid of the lean burn ignition (FBO ignition), Edelbrock intake & carb, and, at a minimum, get rid of the factory Y-pipe (Walker 40430 if you can find or have one made). If you do duals, there is two ways to do it- slide the fuel tank over one rib to the right and then you have room to run a 2nd pipe. Other way? Factory ran two pipes to the RH side, cats, then into a dual in/out muffler (with an X-crossover inside!) and pipes out the back on the one side. Look at an '80 Aspen cop car exhaust diagram/pic and you'll see it

      @@RabidTransitGarage I was gonna ask you about trashing that lean burn. You ought to base line it the way it is and then run it after the electronic swap. Just be cool to see the before and after.

      Yeah, the lean burn is going to go. When I bought the car, the previous owner had about 4 extra NOS Lean burn computers in the trunk

      Wow you might be sitting on some ebay gold. Accurately if it's running okay, the computers are pretty reliable, it's just the mountain of vacuum lines and wires that tend to cause issues with typical trouble shooting. Once again Chrysler when too far in to the future and shot themselves in the foot.

    Beautiful work on this and I have to replace the wiper motor on mine! I have the Hayne's Manual for 1971-1989 models. I absolutely wish I could have a second 5th avenue! The one that I have now with only 80,000 miles, long tube headers, 0 rust under wraps and only drive in summer. And a white one for all year driving.

      I have one red leather interior black exterior with open headers and absolutely no rust. It's coming with me to the grave.

    I had the same wiper bushing fall apart last year and had them all replaced since the others looked bad after 34 years. Just a matter of time now before I get to find out how it performs with a Holley Sniper efi installed with refreshed and upgraded front suspension. Like you, I also have a Ram, but a 2012 and love them both.

      In high school we had a 14,000 mile survivor that didn't have a single flaw. We used it as a Field bomber. Until it died in the middle of a bean field and then we blew it up with explosives

    You explained how you installed the bushing into the wiper linkage but didn't show you attach the linkage back onto the motor???

    • @RabidTransitGarage
      @RabidTransitGarage  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the comment! You are correct I did miss that. The bushing just pushes on the ball stud off the wiper arm linkage.

    They made cop cars out of that platform with good reason they were good cars. Only the lean burn would be in the trash.

    Just had my 88 inspected and was told that the wipes didnt work because of that bushing. Thx i was wondering what it was exactly. My 88 is damn near mint with 21600 miles

      The bushing kit is available in the help section at O Reilly

    How much more efficient is this without the lean burn? I was actually thinking of doing that with mine especially with the long tube headers. It's getting only 13mpg 😶
