      @@shardofkingdoms9816 I dont know, Capcom`s cash cow has been Monster Hunter for well over a decade. Many of their other franchises do well as well. The pre-mature release of SFV probably had more to do with e-sports if anything. SFV towards the end wasnt even suppose to have a season 5, but it existed so they could work on SF6 longer.

    Ah Season 1 of SFV. I can’t let go how Capcom DE-STROYED Nash after ppl complained about him in S1 and then the game proceeds to have characters twice as busted and after the fact and they still never brought Nash back from the depths. This character got killed in the first season from being in a great place and we never saw him again for the rest of the lifespan.

    Can confirm that CFN was not working on launch. Another little detail about that main menu, is that the shade of blue changed according to the time. During mornings it had a lighter blue, and during night time, the one being showed in the video.

    I’ll second preferring Vanilla SFV’s aesthetics over Arcade/Champion edition. Not sure what it is, but the minimalistic white/blue style hud and menu theme is appealing to me. That, and the character selection screen was awesome and got you pumped up before a match.

      Agreed. The more gaudy presentation of CE felt more at home in a game like Tekken or KOF to me.

      Arcade edition went overboard with gold on everything. It felt snazzy at first, and the fact that it changed at all was welcome, but it didn't take long before it got annoying.
      They also cut down on some of the lighting effects on the EX and V meters, which is something I didn't realize for a while. I kind of like the look of season 1's maxed out V meter.

    One thing that wasn’t mentioned about season 1. Reversals were invincible and didn’t require meter. So metered DPs were still a thing. Also there was an option select jump which allowed you to escape throws and beat frame traps. This was removed in season 2.
    Lastly anti air jabs. Lots of characters had them and lots of them got free mixups.
    The problem with season 1 was that it was too scrambly. Every situation lead to a scramble. Ken and Chun were 2 of the best scramble characters in the game. With Ryu coming in behind them.
    A lot of the season 2 changes short term pissed people off. I think it took really till season 4 to get the formula right. Because season 3 had the Abigail problem. And season 2 was so centered around robbery V-triggers.
    Season 4 started the final meta of whiff punish and cr.mk fighter V. But I also think the game because very stale too. And kind of boring.
    This is why SF6 really need to keep the fun and spirit of characters. Without taking the fun and interesting stuff from them.

    • @bartdude82
      @bartdude82 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Granted we are in the first season but SF6 might be heading down the same path of seasons until it becomes properly balanced.
      - Raw DR completely overshadows neutral play (DI kinda plays a role in this as well but not as egregious)
      - DR still eating inputs
      - Instant 50/50 mixups from DR moves
      - Strike/Throw vortex from knockdowns/DR moves
      - Corner and midscreen throw loops
      - No established high/med/low game. For example, doesn’t make sense for Ken’s st.HP (a HIGH move) to connect on a low crouching Cammy or Juri. This move has always been duckable since SF2 days. The punch doesn’t even touch their heads but it still connects on block/hit. Same goes for a lot of standing jabs in this game. Hitbox interactions are janky.
      The current meta is to force 50/50s any chance you can get. Or basically, whoever can force the 50/50 first. Idk what this new formula for SF that Capcom is pushing as of late, but I’m not a fan at all.

    • @Shodan130
      @Shodan130 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Was also worth a mention that the transition from the betas to the vanilla release also left a bad taste in some people’s mouths, the beta had some cool tech like mika resets and the like that got removed in the release version and gave the game a bit of a neutered feel, the removal of crouch tech made offense really oppressive for the first while as it was a staple defensive option going back to 3s and the EX games
      I remember a lot of people saying the game just felt basic and the copium of “Bro we just haven’t discovered the stuff yet” was there for the first year or so

    This entire section is wrong.
    The Bustling Sidestreet stage was initially THE ONLY stage in vanilla SFV that had the stage transitions working. You could bust someone through the wall and expand into the diner, and then get smacked into the cramped kitchen and get noodles on their head.
    And the noodles would stay on their head for the rest of the match, as long as they didn't get hit or blocked an attack again.
    I remember my friends and I would joke around about "Noodles Challenges" where we'd go for a Perfect on Round 3/Final Round in order to keep the noodles on our head(s) for the win screen.

  • @_Adie
    @_Adie 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Yeah man, when it came out I was like "all the people hating on lack of content are FILTHY CASUALS who don't know that the real enjoyment of fighting games is just playing against other people." And well, in that department, the game was there. Online, offline vs, training mode. But everything else... eeesh. Though tbf, Overwatch launched the same year and there also wasn't anything else but online play, and everybody loved that, so idk. At least League is free. But CS:GO wasn't at the time.
    I was so defensive about it, because I got into fighting games few years before that and, well, SFIV was in full swing by that time, not to mention it was just a hard game in general for a total newcomer. So I thought that SFV would be my chance. Yeah, I was an apologist, so what.
    Oh, the stage transitions/finishers: yeah, they were added later (not for any of the DLC stages, though), but the Bustling Side Street was there from the start. I'm positive. It was the only stage that had it for a long time.
    Anyway, I honestly also kinda prefer the original UI. Like, it was nothing, but it was a very clean nothing. We all liked the Arcade Edition overhaul because it was something new and, at least in my mind, it could've hinted at some bigger story developments/implications, especially with G. Or, at the very least, that we would've gotten yet another overhaul at some point, like Tekken 7 did during that time. And none of those things happened. I especially mourn the loss of the original VS screen. Because the VS looked like V and 5, which is, you know, kinda corny, but also kinda cute. Same with the Character Select screen, there's that deliberate V in there. And boy, the Character Select theme. That was like, the only speck of this game's identity, to me. (Along with Ring of Power's theme.) I still listen to it sometimes, it's miles better than what we got now.
    but at least the v-system and ex bars look like batteries now, so that's funny

  • @SnDFrostey

    I remember playing the beta as Laura and enjoying it enough for me to really want the full version. I remember saving some money getting SFV alongside a PS4 in my university days, when the GameStop near my favorite gym was still open, which my parents probably would have advised against. I remember having to wait an extra few days to order a Brooks Converter for my ps3 fightsticks. I remember how bored I got of fighting Necalli on the waterfall stage for Survival. I remember how strange it was how odd the story mode art felt because of how little it looked like the in-game designs especially for proportions. I remember how relieved I was when they began releasing Season 1 dlc, and how exciting it was that Guile and Alex were free for a certain period.
    Overall, it's interesting to see how a game has post-development now with all these patches; it makes it a lot harder to revisit the past of a fighting game compared to the separate releases that Street Fighter along with other fighting games have had.z
    Thanks for this trip down memory lane.

    Another Blue Menu enjoyer here. I loved the Blue version and wish you could switch back to it. Wasn't a big fan of the while version, and while the blue menu music wasn't something special, the white menu music was too bombastic for my taste.
    Another thing you couldn't do in vanilla SFV was REMATCH online. Yes, all online matches were one and done affairs during the first weeks. Add to that the huge amount of ragequiters and no real repercussion to ragequiting, the loading times before every match and Online was a sad experience overall during the first months.

      Unfortunately, no, it isn't an actual Arcade mode.
      None of the opponents are random (they're all fixed depending on your character), they're very short (the longest stories have like four fights, and apparently the shortest ones have *two*), and there's not even any kind of final boss (there's not even "boss" variations of the regular characters to fight at the end, like in Guilty Gear, Blazblue or other fighting games where not all characters have the same final fight).
      There _is_ an actual Arcade mode, but it took until Season 3 (aka Arcade Edition) to add it to the game.

    i'm grateful for all the work capcom put into this game over the 7 years of its life. it became a much better game, and i think if the netcode and online play were better, it would still be standing on equal ground with SF 6. because you can't drive rush all over the place, getting in and breaking opponent's defense requires more effort and thought. i think there is also a much larger variety of game mechanics in 5 because there are so many more playable characters. it also has one of the best soundtracks IMO. and personally, i think the 5 brand new characters they introduced in the season 2 character DLC added a lot of excitement to the game and helped define the character of this game, and i hope see the return of characters like zeku, kolin, menat, and abigail.

      I use to play SFIV vanilla competitively. Pound for pound it was much worse than SFV vanilla. Though at the time the mentality about balance was difference.
      The FGC got use to a slew of broken or imbalanced KOF games. MVc2 which was definitely the biggest game pre-SFIV had a god tier of only 4 characters. And only about 4 or 5 viable teams.
      CVS 2 has a Bisoj, Sakura,Vega and Sagat problem. Most high level matches can down to A groove Bison or Sakura. And C groove or K groove Sagat
      Balance just really wasn’t a thing during SFIV launch at all. SFIV was of course way more balanced than 3s and other competitive games at the time. But it still was far from balanced.

      List of SFIV vanilla issues:
      Akuma roundhouse stun loop.
      Unblockables
      Chun li and Abel infinite
      Rufus ex snake strike did 30%
      Sagat cancellable at lk lead into huge damage.
      Sagat range was already insane and he could Kara all of his stuff.
      Ryu insane damage. Privileged. While other characters struggled to cancel into their ultras. Ryu had tons of ways. Ditto for Rufus
      If SFIV vanilla were released today it would literally die in a week. It was an arcade release and things like online play and patching wasn’t standard back then. So people just had to deal with it. And there wasn’t enough quality coming from other franchises at the time. KOF 12 was a shit show of a game and Guilty Gear was old as shit by that point. And BlazBlu CT may have had worse issues

    I would like to see statistics for played modes. SF5 was criticized for not having an arcade mode, but does anyone really play this mode? You can say arcade mode is a de facto standard of fighting games, but the output jack was also standard on phones, and look where it is now. Now SF6 has a lot of content, but who spends most of their time on world tour mode? I'm not a pro player at all (silver-gold), but I find these single-player modes so boring. My little community only plays training or (online) versus. I play single-player modes only for rewards (story bits, currency, etc.). What we really need is 1 - good netcode, 2 - crossplay, 3 - a perfect training mode, 4 - quality ranking, 5 - functional lobbies, and 6 - an overall story mode and character-based stories.

Do they buy Mortal Kombat, watch the fatalities, play the story mode for 2-3 hours, and then set it aside? Fighting games don't have campaigns like God of War or GTA. I can't imagine someone at school or work thinking, 'I can't wait to get home and spend some time in world tour or arcade mode.' I just don’t thrust that someone is grinding single player content in fighting game, maybe one and done. The sole reason of these game is competing which started in the arcades (there was leader board in arcade mode, so your name will be visible this is kind competition).
      When I was younger, during the PS1 and PS2 era, I disliked fighting games because I didn't see the point in playing alone. I remember liking a Soul Calibur demo at a friend's house, so I bought the game but returned it a few days later as do anything to me.
      Maybe this is because people hate losing. It takes time to learn (not just fighting games), and I don't understand why some expect to be good immediately. I also hate losing, especially to someone who uses gimmicks or repeats the same attacks over and over. But If you get just a little bit better in the game you start thinking about matches more, you start to see situations, you will enjoy games despite loosing.

    Awesome video, but sf5 was awful from start to end. Footsies non existent because of proximity block. V trigger. Lack of player expression through combos. Crush counter encouraging you to mash heavy attacks for scrubby free combos. The scrubbiest street fighter ever in terms of execution. You can mash the fuck out of each button during the combo sequence and the combo will not drop. Lots of sf5 players are complaining about sf5, and I understand why now.
    They're simply not good. They were use to this super 2 demensional gameplay. In sf6 theres too many options. They want to be able to stomp their opponent without them having an answer.

    • @bartdude82
      @bartdude82 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I am not an SFV apologist at all but SF6 being the best since SF4 isn’t really saying much because it too shares a couple of problems with SFV and then some
      - overshadowed neutral and footsies due to overpowered DR (and to some extent DI)
      - also lack of combo expression with everyone taking the same burn drive meter into lvl 3 combo route etc…
      - DR eating inputs
      - raw DR being uncheckable
      - instant high/low 50/50s and strike/throw guesses from plus DR moves and knockdowns which dumbs down the skill needed to win if you can just guess right half the time (great for beginners and casuals tho!),
      -Just a random thought, but it’s funny how people tend to instantly think of and complain about vortexes when SF4 is brought up but fail to realize that this crap is a vortex in and of itself
      - egregious corner/midscreen throw loops
      - no proper high/med/low hitbox interactions which causes moves like Ken’s st.HP to run amok and not get checked the way it’s supposed to (duck and low punish/sweep)
      Imo, SFV and SFVI are so far, the worst gameplay designs for SF yet but I would still take 6 over 5 any day.
