It would be nice to see a Tekken tag 3 in the future. Imagine having Tag with the Tekken 8 base, a return to the spinoff side of the franchise can be a great idea
I don’t think there will be a Tag3 because now Tekken is too invested in both the competitive play and milking out one game for possibly even 8 years with DLC. Tag might be an extra feature within 8 at some point though.
I had a PS2 at EU launch. Tekken tag 1 will always hold a special place in my heart. Tekken tag 2 is the most fun I've ever had getting a platinum in any game. So much so just the other week I went and got 1000g on the 360 version. All tag 2 needed imo was a decent tutorial. The game was daunting to a casual or newcomer.
Freshman year in college tekken tag 1 came out. Lucky me i had a dorm roommate who also loved fighting games! We couldnt get enough of tekken tag. Those were the days!
TTT2 came out at a time when the fighting game market was oversaturated. You had Soul Calibur 5, Dead or Alive 5, Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, SFxTekken, BlazBlue, ultimate mvc3, the list goes on. It also came out before the Xbox one and ps4 were about to release. It was a strange time in gaming. Fun game and I wish it had more of an impact. I love revisiting it for time to time on the series x
I remember playing Tag2 on the WiiU as a kid and having an blast with it. So many hours spent on that game. Easily one of my favorite Tekken games ever.
bro the whole summer of 2013 i had all of my cousins and neighbors buying tag 2 and practicing so we’d have the greatest pair play sets known to man 😂😂 i will always love the tag tekken games for that alone
It is incredibly annoying to me that TTT2 didn’t sell as well as expected because real fans of the series, especially long term fans, really got their money’s worth, it was such an incredible love letter to us, it’s played fantastically, so well that I didn’t even know competitive players has issues until years after release. It was always meant to be a game to be played just for fun I think
But that's sort of why it failed. Fighting games need to appeal to their casual audience more than their competitive ones. Not that they should completely ignore the competitive scene but the casual side greatly dwarws them and thus is where most of the sales come from. That's the main reason it didn't do well it was too complicated even by Tekken standards.
I own it and played it a lot when it came out. In my opinion it just doesn’t have the same swag as the first game especially the soundtrack. Plus i think the game allowed too many options in terms of combo potential with the characters match ups.
World Tekken Federation was absolutely ahead of its time. I remember being able to access my profile online and seeing all my match data, and a breakdown of my playstyle, right down to which attacks I liked to use the most. The problem with WTF was, replays were tied to the WTF servers. So when WTF shut down, you could no long view or save replays. AT ALL.

Tekken Tag 2 was quite paradoxical in a sense. It was almost like a celebration of Tekken to all its fans but at the same time a lot of their fans were competitive players who were turned off by its stressful gameplay.

One detail that gets overlooked by some many content creators regarding TTT1. He managed to mention Netsu but doesn't mention how Tag Juggles deplete the healing (red) bar of the opponent. He mentions this for TTT2 but this was a thing with TTT1 as well.
tekken tag was the first "Experimental" tekken game to release on the console that holds the MOST Experimental game titles (it was a 2000 ps2 Launch title).offering the first tekken to have "tekken theater" (which opened the door for the 2nd tag to start one of my FAVORITE modes "tekken tunes/jukebox" to add music from older games to every stage).
If Namco can somehow build a Tag mode into Tekken 8 rather than have a full tag 3 (as much as I'd love to see every character in one ridiculously huge game) and made it reminiscent of Tag 1 then that would be the best way to go. Especially if they gave us a legacy collection of the arcade originals in Tekken 8 as DLC. (Or its own standalone remastered collection)
