Frederick Delius, Walk to the Paradise Garden, Atkinson Grimshaw

  • Frederick Delius, Frederick Theodore Albert Delius CH (1862- 1934), Walk to the Paradise Garden,
London Symphony Orchestra, Sir John Barbirolli.
Works by John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836- 1893). "Walk to the Paradise Garden" is the orchestral interlude
between Scenes 5 and 6 of the opera "A Village Romeo and Juliet". The Paradise Garden is actually a dilapidated Pub
where the lover's Sali and Vreli can "dance all night". The rural lover's have known each other since childhood
and are willing to die together rather than give in to the pressures that will seperate them.
This interlude seems to synthesize many elements found in the opera, the "Paradise Garden", a seedy country dance hall
where the two lovers make a pact to do themselves in, a plot of land where they played together during their childhood,
the Dark Fiddler and his simbolic social conflicts, the hay barge which will sink in the river and carry them to their death,
and most of all, the heartbreak of Love; painful it weaves in long almost unbearable phrases,
an operatic play within a play based on the definition of the words "Paradise Garden".

There is young people that can appreciate this type of music - I'm 17 and I love this piece and performance! This reminds me of Ravel's Daphnis & Chloe

That is wonderful you are obviously nor British as, sadly, very few younger British would have even heard any classical music. Their heads are full of the thump, thump thump beat of the moronic music fed to them these days. Their minds are so numb they don't even look for other things. Well done-and keep exploring. It makes like so much richer.

@@terrybarlow2445 Indeed! I still listen to this piece occasionally but I have also given a change to some music I found boring beforehand, like Schubert's piano music and Mozart's piano concertos. My favourites are still from the impressionistic and neoclassical period though, being an immortal Ravel and Debussy fan

@akselpelkonen6604 in my youth I only seemed to respect and attend to black jazz musicians. Of course, there was a wealth of good there. Have found more recently, though, that I was missing a lot of good music.

His wife, Yelka, used to write her 'thunder letters' trying to get more performances. But Delius's raw talent, being able to write through the pen of Eric Fenby, is just mind boggling.

Eric Fenby, Delius's assistant in the composer's later years, noted, "The music of Delius is not an acquired taste. One either likes it the moment one first hears it, or the sound of it is once and for ever distasteful to one. It is an art which will never enjoy an appeal to the many, but one which will always be loved, and dearly loved, by the few."
As for me, "You can never be too thin nor too rich, neither can you ever have enough Delius."
    YMMV of course.

This music is so contemplative that it inspired me to contemplate what positivist philosophers have always said. My mind drifts so easily on this beautiful, scattered melodies, sometimes calm, then insistent, warm and close, so intimate, then fleeing on cunning modulations; from major to minor, turning lazily like leaves in a stream !

This interlude has become a "best of" any Delius concert - a too rare event. We do not know what we should admire at most: the lyrism of melodic cells, the harmonic invention, the soft but consistent orchestration. This interlude is a pure delight ! And in fact it is in some sense a prelude to a drama.

I'm a fan of classical music. I've been listening to it since I was about six years old. Of course, TH-cam has made classical music more accessible to all. The images that accompany the music can either add to or detract from the music. Your images did much to add to the music. The way you slowly moved in on the images, and out again gives the viewer the impression that he is walking through the landscape pictures on the monitor. Very well done!

But not for your post, how many would not have heard this gem? So you’ve done a service to mankind. No less!
This Symphonic Walk to the Paradise Garden, the ebb and flow so much reflects the vagaries of life and its loves and loves lost, unexpected tragedies we must overcome, and the mystery of the unexpected. I’m impressed at the comments below, so erudite and philosophical. Sophisticated music attracts those of us that have lived a big life and have much to contemplate.

Delius 'paints' his orchestration--its not just vivid orchestration ala Rimsky-Korsakov. he is searching for specific sounds then clothes these sounds in the appropriate instruments. There is a peacefulness, lyrical, pastoral quality to much of his work. We need this music in this troubled world.

A sadly under-appreciated composer in my opinion!

I love Delius. His pastoral british language in impressionist techniques with romantic expression makes him truly unique. Sad that most know of Holst, Elgar and Vaughan Williams but not so much of Delius...

@zoranrosendahl As earlier requested, the last painting is entitled "Old Chelsea" which depicts the tower of Chelsea Old Church from Cheyne Row, a Chelsea Pensioner and his young guardian are making their way homeward. In the video, the paintings prior to this, the barge has sunk and the river flows on, a couple has reappeared on a moonlit street,,, everyone will probably have a different interpretation as to what Old Chelsea is about...
