I have fallen in love with this piece. At age 70 it reminds me of my life. Warm, romantic periods, playful periods, periods where I was just coasting along. I can never listen to this without crying. Not sad tears, reflective tears.
I got into delius in my 20's, I felt it so deeply now in my 50's I understand it, they aching melancholy, the understanding that the intoxication and beauty of life won't last, the bittersweet nature of life, Delius captures to perfection ...
I like the idea in jazz for example of the bass part representing the grief in life, how it adds to the impact of the melodic line, enhancing the beauty actually.
Amazing. Here in my 20s, I was sitting here listening to this and those exact feelings are what stirred inside me. I think youre right. Delius captured it to perfection.
Thank you for uploading this most inspiring recording! Oh, I love Delius so much! The more I listen to his music the more I appreciate his unique lyricism. Thanks, again. . .
Delius was sensitive to many influences, starting from Grieg in his early times. He did not keep the syantax of Debussy, opting for a more classical language, but he kept the idea of free links of chords replacing the traditional cadenzas; This harmonic liberty gives to his music this perfume of freedom and freshness which is most often his distinctive mark. The score is written for a normal orchestra, but Delius makes few use of large brasses except in the short central climax, and favours woodwinds, which make the score so delicate."In a summer garden" is relatively known and is typical of the usual style of Delius. It is a pity not to hear more often Delius in our concert rooms; He is so british, in a certain sense !! Even if he did not live in Britain for long. In my opinion, he is a "must-be" composer.
very true! I prefer Debussy, he is more cosmopolitan, despite my English origin and German upbringing, my musical heart is French. My favourite English composer of the impressionistic generation, and the most original, is Cyril Scott.
Well said Gerard! All composers are unique and they shouldn't be compared with one another. I very much like your use of 'perfume' for Delius' harmony. It really is very 'other worldly' and evokes magical scenes which allow every listener to create his/her own supporting reality. Have you watched the film 'A Song of Summer'. It tells the story of Fenby and Delius working together to complete his last works. It's free on youtube and is very revealing! Let us all know more of your thoughts on him - he's always been my favourite composer and have played horn in many of his works . . . you're right, he's irreplaceable and should be performed much more - espacially in the Proms : they left him out again this year!! Best wishes to you - Richard Duckett (Team Brass).
@@richardduckett9746 I knox thetthis somparison may seem qomehow starge, but Delius is a bit dor UK what Takemitsu is for Japan -considering the gap in tie, needless to say. Takemitu cannot be from another country thn Japan, and Delius is definitively English. Many thanks Gerard. Yes, l agree with you - and thanks for getting back to me. However, despite our own opinions on the matter, l would still recommend that anyone with even the slightest interest in Delius should watch the film A Song of Summer by Ken Russell. He also made films on Elgar and R.Strauss which are equally good. I'm not a musicologist, just a french horn player and l've never had a great interest in music history - it wouldn't make my playing any better! The film on Delius is free to watch on youtube. Thanks again for getting back in touch. Anyone who is a friend of Delius is a friend of mine!! Richard Duckett (Team Woodwind).
Thx labémolmineur for Bo Holten conduction, "In a Summer Garden". Bo Holten was one of an assemblage of musical authorities assembled by J. Bridcut for his film of Delius. A truly great work which brings the composer from his midnight assignation/burial in England, a year after he died in France to his burial in Brittain, with owls hooting ... back to biographical/cinema life. Holten played this song longer indeed, and most beautifully.
Thank you. I'm glad you mention Bridcut's film; it was what prompted me to get this recording. What a gripping work, with unforgettable interpretations of Delius's music by the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra under Bo Holten. I will never forget all of its colors, images, scents- if music can have scent and color. I've been a Delius lover ever since.

Without this Japanesque bridge's picture , this masterpiece would have been very lonely and the enjoyment and pleasures of this masterpiece would have been less , and I would feel that this masterpiece is like the taste of stale beer . From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
I'm going to disagree with you in that the music is amazing and can be played to great effect alone or while viewing almost any natural backdrop. Now, that said, "The Japanese Footbridge" painted by Monet does make a wonderful pairing for several obvious reasons. Further, I understand your pride in cultivated gardens of Japan. The better Japanese gardens are amazing and some of the finest examples of living art in the world. Clearly Monet also believed this to be true.
I did know this great composer thanks to the splendid tv program "Clasical Destinations" of Aled Jones and I will want to thanks his very good labour showing to the world these great composers from United Kingdong first henry century not very good know in the rest of the world.
So Delius wasn’t as........fancy-schmancy as some of the other greats of his time? What commenters seem to be saying? Doesn’t matter too much to me, this is a good piece to relax to.❤️
Seems it's Summer just after a rain and birds are busy taking baths. Makes me realize that I'm lolly-gaggin' and lazy. Everything is clear and clean. But I'm fallin' asleep. Yawn.
chbeck out the "Florida Suite" and "A Song of Siummer", the "Song of the High Hills". I just love Delius being from England but working on a Florida orange plantation.
The first movement of his Piano Concerto is among the most beautiful music I've heard in my life. The original version though - The reworked versions he later made doesn't reach the subtlety and extraordinary sensibility of the original.

Well, Copyright already infringed by uploading. Or did you ask the copyright owner? Furthermore, with TH-cam not paying adequately, there is of course no adequate exchange for the artists involved.
Composer and artist are long dead. Only 'pay' would be to a greedy corporation that could care less about the composer or artist nor any possible living family. As for the performing musicians, they get zero for the recording once it has been recorded and released - nor does the conductor of the orchestra.

The visions I see of my youth in beautiful Missouri.
Beautiful with a beautiful painting of Monet.
Delius music was a big part of my childhood. He has never outstayed his welcome.

Delius outdid himself on this one. Pure beauty from start to finish. And a work just bursting with the ambience of his Floridian soul.
Seems very symphonic with all those precussion instruments in this piece!!!
