I'm 75 and my EQS was delivered 2 months ago -- so yes, for me it is a retirement car like you suggested :) And our one and only car for the two of us. I agree with your comment that it is initially somewhat overwhelming. However, after 3 or 4 weeks you do get used to the controls. Also the Hey Mercedes feature lets you execute most common commands by voice, like adjusting the temperature, changing USB tracks or volume, or displaying an underlying touch menu. As you found, the capacitive controls on the steering wheel are a pain -- a really bad design decision. But you didn't highlight the reasons why the car is great -- it is super-QUIET and super-SMOOTH and QUICK. Not Tesla teen-aged-boy stupidly fast, but usefully quick in day-to-day driving. And the rear-wheel steering makes it incredibly agile. For the kind of driving I do -- to and from SF on crowded freeways and jaunts around Northern California -- it is ideal. The car is always paying attention in stop-and-go traffic so you don't have to be on edge all the time. Its quietness and smoothness mean your journey is far less tiring than my previous car -- also an MB. You expressed concern about range but I think your testing environment is quite unlike most people's use -- driving the heck out of the car each day, then handing it off to your poor co-worker without recharging it. Like most folks, I come home, I plug it in to my Level 2 charger, it automatically starts charging at midnight (when PG&E's rates drop to merely outrageous), before 8am next day the battery is completely recharged no matter how low it was the night before. This is true for any electric car -- you really don't think about range in day-to-day driving if you live/work/play in a major metro. (Admittedly this would be different if you have to travel frequently through large rural areas.) And I love driving past gas stations and their $6 gas !!! I'm very fortunate to enjoy such a vehicle as the EQS and I give thanks for my good fortune. But many of its pleasures -- quiet smooth quick -- are typical of any electric car. Most importantly, like all EVs it can run on completely renewable energy -- and we have to stop using fossil fuels or our grandchildren will have no place to call home.
At the $140,000 price point, I would get 2 or 3 vehicles each with a different mission; short trips by myself, road trip with family, going to the track, etc.
I've had my EQS on order for 10 months. Can't wait for the ship to deliver it. Loaded with every option. BTW, back in 2012, my new Tesla Model S had no buttons. Nobody is complaining after all this time, so I do not think it's an issue. Your voice control can pretty much control the everything.
I think you can see the Mercedes’s pedestrian light flash at 17:12 in the footage of the car coming around the corner on the track. The headlights seem to flash twice, presumably in response to the camera operator standing at the edge of the track.
I considered the EQS but got a Lucid Air GT instead. I am far from impressed by touchscreens controlling everything and found the Lucids physical switches to be intuitive. Screen menus offer more fine tuning of audio, climate and seat controls, but the redundant physical controls are quick and easy to use while driving without taking your eyes off the road. You will probably find that the real-world Mercedes range at least matches the Tesla's. MB derates their EPA range while Tesla exaggerates.
Your commentary was probably right about purchasing demographic. I am 77 years old. Maybe a bit of a geek when it comes to technology. Have owned 3 Teslas so maybe used to the tablet type operating systems. Found the Mercedes EQS 580 to be as flexible as many other brands in configuring the various features. Usually on these forward thinking technologies you need to expect some learning of the UI. Did I mention I had a Genesis GV60 & it too was deep into configuring features. CR, my advice…. Don’t purchase latest model year cars. Do your research & if prior year is the same, even two years back, buy a CPO! Let somebody else take the deprecation hit & you enjoy the benefits of a much less expensive car. In my case, I waited & purchased said CPO with 10 k miles for $41k less. Listen to this grandpa if you have to own & keep the budget available for more purchases for your fleet. Last point…have owned many cars in my lucky lifetime & this Mercedes Ev is for me & close to my favorite ride!
Mercedes lights have been some of the best in the industry for years at least outside of the United States. My 2014 E Class has the intelligent lighting system and the high beam is always on and blocks out cars. I have never been flashed by any car. It lights up the road perfectly. I can no longer drive a car with normal lights. It will always switch off LED segments where there are cars but the high beam is still shining around them. It's amazing.
You should really spend more time trying to learn about such a sophisticated car before going on line and trashing it. I own this vehicle and I can tell you that virtually every function that gave you difficulty can be operated by a simple voice command (it’s in the manual - just read it!)
I am considering one of these Mercedes cars but currently drive a Model S because the price is better, there are more charging options, and they are well equipped. Plus they are available. Have you tried to get your hands on an EQS?
+1... Amen... MBs switching to capacitive controls on the steering wheel is a BIG mistake... No secret there ... simply ask other OEMs. . Viewed the MB EQS in person, for kicks.. Not ready for EVs just yet. In May we ordered a '23 E-450 All Terrain wagon ... Be damned is the nonsensical capacitive mistake... A good wagon has gone bad ..
I've been watching for a few years and I nominate this episode as the most entertaining ever. Consider submitting this video to Saturday Night Live. All hail Mercedes Benz for producing a vehicle that requires a satirical response.

Always have a physical volume knob on the dashboard. Avoid capacitive buttons in cars. Never use capacitive buttons on the steering wheel where the driver needs to be able to use tactile sense to work the buttons while keeping their eyes on the road. At this price range, the lack of attention to detail by having different behaviors between the volume slider on the steering wheel and the one in the center console is inexcusable. It's like they had one team design the steering wheel and another design the center console; the teams never talked and came up with two different volume slider behaviors. Whenever I point out the obvious, I usually get trolled by some idiot. See below if I get trolled here.
I don't think a physical volume knob is necessary as long as you have physical volume buttons on the steering wheel. I don't know when the last time I used the volume knob on the dash since I always use the steering wheel controls.
@@stephenj4937 That's the point, there isn't a physical button on the wheel, it's a capacitive slider that operates differently than the one on the console. I have a Mazda6. While there's a volume rocker on the wheel, there's a small volume knob on the console and if I need to kill the radio instantly, all I have to do is push it down.

Agree with the EV infrastructure. We not only need new chargers but we need existing ones repaired and useable. There is no accountability for this currently.
Seems to me that voice commands would have resolved many of the touchscreen complications. “Hey Mercedes, set volume to 20%.” Or “stop massage mode, etc…”
When you say “subtle” were these digital lights features tested/evaluated in both daytime as well as nighttime conditions? I.E. what may appear to be subtle in daytime operation, may be MUCH more noticeable (disconcerting?) in a night lowlight operating environment.
Check for corporate discounts for buying your car. It in certain cases guarantees the amount you pay for the car that it will be a certain percent under MSRP or dealer invoice. If you have that perk and a decent brand to chose from, you are very fortunate but you can lock in a price below retail.
Way too much content on buttons and screen features. This should be a car review with much more driving performance and cabin comfort. This review lost focus.
The Lucid Air is also a rich man's toy - but is a better value, assuming that the startup company can follow through. The last I saw, Lucid was still struggling to get their software/UI to work properly, but I hope they succeed.
I think that automakers are expecting people to use voice assistants more and more - so when you want to set the volume lower, just say something like "Hey Mercedes, set volume to 3". It does seem that Mercedes implemented way too many "innovations" to the controls in this car though.
Finally, the Mercedes EQS will take the spot light off Tesla for getting the trophy on potential distraction on using the screen and controls while driving. Let's hope Mercedes can get software updates to really simplify the user screens and controls while driving.
