That's great to hear that you had a high school art instructor that did prepare you well. Unfortunately that doesn't happen as often as it could or should. That's not to say they aren't good art teachers--what is happening is that too many of them are not aware of what colleges are looking for. It's great to hear this--I would love to speak with your teacher if they are still around. I love to collaborate with high school art departments to help prepare our students.

I think it is a great idea to sign up for a figure drawing course if that would be required in the student's field of study. Often times when students come to me they have left too little time for taking courses in all the areas they need to include in a portfolio, so I teach them the specific things they need to get accepted, often saving money and time in the end.

PortPrep has been absolutely amazing in my application process. Karen and Garth are both outstanding artist who are there to help you. If you have the motivation to start early, PortPrep will be able to assist with the acceptance letter you have always dreamed of. I came to PortPrep not even knowing how to draw, and now, with acceptance letters to various colleges, I can only thank PortPrep. Highly recommend!!

Hello. What is it that you find discouraging? You mention 1:18--Are you referring to the part of the video that tells you high school does not prepare students well enough to get into the best programs? Please tell us more...

Wow! That's fantastic! You must be very talented. Some people can pull that off and some need to work harder and longer. I'm here for those that need some support and extra education if they didn't get the previous training or need some input to bring out their talent. It's great you've go so much raw talent. I'm sure you will do well in your career and studies. Best Wishes.

I often recommend students to take a life drawing course as well as work with me if they have the time to do so. Many students and their parents want to everything they can to get into the better colleges and see the expense of portfolio coaching as an investment in their future.

This is a great question. While there are free or inexpensive resources for students that might help, what PortPrep offers gives specific high calibre guidance that gives students better odds of acceptance--so far we have 100% acceptance rates. Every student I have counselled has been accepted into the college of their choice. Students and parents get the guidance they want that they have had trouble finding on their own. I appreciate your input. I would love to share these resources with others

How long does it take usually to complete an art portfolio? A year or two? Thanks!

    Hi,
If you have the work it only takes maybe 2 weeks to put it together. I have seen students create portfolios start to finish including learning the skills in 4 months.
The time it takes depends on the individual's experience. I've seen people do it in 2 weeks to 1 year. I can give you more accurate advice if you take my free assessment.

#1 never be modest about your work. Show confidence...In school they used my work for an example in front of the whole class...then I was asked to explain (which I still do poorly) They asked how I got the idea, and I replied with "I really don't know, I just started drawing and it ended up this way" and then I was asked what type or shade of pencil I used...and I replied "um...mechanical" I am really good at what I do, but I came across as insincere and lazy...

Waste of time and money. I had less work then anyone and most of it wasn't finished and I got excepted while my classmates had teachers help them put portfolios together. My classmates all got A's too but I'm on a different level. Talent shines through. I also threw my portfolio together the night before I went to Art uni. Out of 90-100 people 8 got picked for interviews on the day and four got acepted. And I only had my AS level work against A level and people with foundation degrees lol.

Do you help students who aren't fresh out of high school? Let's just say I'm above 25.
