I totally agree in separating languages or learning languages that are distinct from one another. I reached a solid level in Spanish and wanted to learn French (which I already knew its basics from school) but as you’ve mentioned, both languages were often overlapping especially before reaching a solid/good level in French. This did not happen when I started learning Spanish after having a very strong base in German (as both languages are relatively far from each other). The second point you’ve mentioned regarding pausing for a couple of months or so and then coming back feeling better somehow is totally true and I could confirm this. However, to enjoy this status, you’ll need to already have a good base of the language paused. If you’re still an absolute beginner (around A1 and starting A2 or so), that would prove more difficult. Greetings to you Brian, great video! 😄

Oh dear! completely relate to this. Thanks a lot for this post. Let me tell you my story: I was born in an English country so English is considered to be my first language but then we relocated back home in a French country where I started going to school (a French school) . Around me I had French native speakers but at home within my nuclear family we used to speak English. Now I’m about to hit 30 and while my French is advanced enough, my English is still B (that’s how I feel 😢). Not to mention that I’ve been mixing them up anytime I used to speak [1:45]without knowing that I was making a huge mistake. Also the accent part can be confusing that’s 5 personalities in just 1 language. South African 🇿🇦 where I was born, Indian 🇮🇳 where I studied and Uk 🇬🇧 influenced by the content I watch on different platforms in order to improve my English 😅😅😅 oh and Arabic cause my mom is a Muslim . Now that’s a big deal 😅
As a French native speaker, I learned English at school but I left university with a 'bad' level konly B1). So 1 year ago, I decided to improve my level and I had many lessons with English native speakers to speak with them, watched many videos in English, etc. The thing is, after 11 months, I was like... tired? Tired of being focused on one language. I even felt guilty when I watched or read something in French and guilty about the IDEA of learning a second language at the same time. And after a couple of weeks, I gave in: I tried to learn not another language but two other languages (Russian and Japanese). And you know what? It's so much easier to learn English now because the part of my brain that is focused on English can finally have some rest between two lessons. Furthermore, it's motivating to learn something new because I'm making a lot of progress, when, obviously, it's harder to notice any improvement in English because of the intermediate plateau I'm stuck on.
This is brilliant. I have long noticed that my personality is different in different languages. But never mafe the final leap of leaning on personalities
In all of my life, I hade contact with English. I can't speka so well, but I ubderstand everything. And these days, I started to learn french and Chinese. Thank you for you help! You have a new follower.
I’m learning Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian at the same time. The one difficulty is that I sometimes get confused by applying Spanish grammar rules and pronunciation to Portuguese
Continue aprendendo português, é um idioma muito bonito, a capacidade de se expressar nessa língua é libertadora. I hope you keep learning Portuguese, and when you feel comfortable, come to Brazil to enjoy the carnival 🎉
That's right!! unbelievable! well, I'm Egyptian, I have been learning English since childhood Now I am learning German toi, and I have a little knowledge of Korean and Italian, Taking a break between languages really helps but I forget some words but that's okay, your Arabic is very good ❤
Im learning German, Spanish (pretty much fluent), sign language, Chinese and Arabic at the same time. I give them equal amount of time and I’m progressing pretty well in all of them. I’m on break right now and will get back to it in 2 weeks.
Thank you so much.. Right now I study four other languages (Japanese, thai, german, English) and also my mother tongue (czech).. So I really appreciate this man ❤️
I NEEDED THIS VIDEO !!!!! I absolutely love languages and like you, couldn’t decide what to learn via Duolingo first. I’m moving to Montreal, so French is at the top of the list. I know Spanish pretty well and I’m decent with Portuguese, so I also picked Portuguese to work on since I practice Spanish at work all the time with coworkers and customers. I’ve always wanted to learn German so, listed. And since Italian is very close to ES and PT I also picked that for a total of 4. Now in day 45 I’m learning all 4 at the same time spending a little bit of time on each each day, depending on my mood. Sometimes I just open the app and jump into whatever language is pulled up without even knowing which one it is because I didn’t look. I used to confuse them in the beginning, but now I’ve compartmentalized them into their own boxes and it’s been a game changer. Your mindset matters a lot. The way you think it works in your head helps to make it easier. I can’t imagine trying to focus at one at a time anymore. That seems harder than “bar hopping” one language to the other lol. Sometimes I’ll go days without touching a certain language, like French, because I’m not feeling it, but when I come back I jump right back in. I love it. Taking time off a language definitely lets it sink in.
Thank you for this video! I am learning 4 languages currently, at different levels. I am intermediate mandarin Chinese, low intermediate Japanese, elementary Spanish, and beginner french. I completely understand the language personality you mentioned, I am much more expressive with Japanese (for example). I don't touch all the languages everyday. I focus certain days on each language. Monday, for example, is entirely Japanese focused, Tuesday is Chinese, Wednesday and Thursday is french, Friday is Spanish, Saturday is whatever language I feel i need more time with, and Sunday is a day off (no studying at all).
YES I KNEW I WERENT THE ONLY ONE EXPERIENCING THIS!! i "speak" 5 languages and i always experience not practicing for like 1 month -> come back -> suddenly im better
You're right mate. I started with German, then few months later, I picked French. They both solidified my hearing and listening skills to push for more. Now in my bucket lists are Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Russian. It would take time but I would complement them by writing A1-B1 exams in each then travel to each country where they speak them.
I love learning languages, custom and cultures of every country. I feel that languages (and food) bring peace. There is no translation app can replace human interaction. I even tried sign language once. Didn’t finish the class but is on my list. Right now I am interested in Vietnamese, Japanese, Spanish and mandarin. Also, I need to brush up in my English as well because I am an Asian living in the US. I wish all of you the very best in your learning. Have fun. Go out there and speak out loud! Love and may peace be with you. :)
Hey Brian! That's amazing! You really speak like masriyin, but i recommend learning arabic fus'ha (the original) which all arab can understand instead of a specific accent.
I was learning Croatian and I haven't completely mastered this language but now also I want to learn Spanish as well so therefore I have watched this video. So I need to alternate between these two languages. Thank you for the tips.
I also have found that learning multiple languages and “taking a break” on them still kind of helps when I go back! I do have to get warmed up to them again when I start, or I have the problem of just speaking Korean when I want to speak French in my current case! I think just learning more about how one language works helps put even totally different languages a little more into focus. I'm going to try to do your language personality idea to help me separate better as well!
Thank you for sharing these valuable tips! It's hard to choose between two languages, so I decided to learn both (Arabic and Japanese in my case). But I would say that learning multiple languages can slow down our progress
In fact, I entered this site, but I do not know whether it was speaking through the camera or just regular messages, because I cannot speak in front of the camera, and this is an important question for me, and I would be grateful to you if you explained the matter to me.
I am taking a pause from my Hebrew learning because I haven’t felt progress and I wanted to concentrate on my immersion in French language in Montreal. But I took it as an occasion to think that everything happens for a reason and I am not taking this pause such as a negative thing. As you said, someday when I restart attacking Hebrew, it should be way better than before :) And I love how you described your personality when you speak French. For me, I feel like being a person with a lot of humors who can be a lot of fun when I speak Korean which is my mother tongue, super polite person when I speak Japanese, super sophisticated and delicate when I speak French, and confident and more manly when I speak English.
I had this experience since starting to learn Spanish aftwer almost 5 years of learning Urdu. It always surprused me that my urdu has actually improved instead of deteriorating. Mr. Wiles, I really appreciate your content in Yotube and I consider you as a highly trusted source when it comes to learning languages. You sure didn't make the rules, but you definitely know how to play the game. A huge thanks to you from the bottom of my heart and I hope that you start learning about Islam one day.
I’m currently self-learning Japanese, and this year, I’ll be continuing French(3rd year of it) and practicing ASL, and this’ll definitely help(along with them being very distinct in terms of the alphabet and vocab)
4:04 bro this is so relatable, i don't even know why bother learning a language when you can just kinda do nothing - you gonna get better at it anyway...
Great video 😎, in fact I agree with you on several things. I am a beginner in both languages that I am learning now, but I feel this wonderful change in my personality, and it is really boring and difficult to devote the same time and effort to learning two languages together, so I was pleased with your words about taking a break and It does not impair progress in the language learning process. Keep it up, the video was on time 😁
4:05 I’ve had similar experience. I wouldn’t say I got better but I would say I remember more than I thought I would. Thank you for this video, it really helps. I had no idea about any of this!

I remember Steve Kaufmann talking about languages "gestating" in your mind when you take a break from them and I really felt like I could relate with this sensation! It must have something to do with active recall being easier if it's drawing from long-term memory or something along those lines. I also loved your notion of language personalities. I always noticed this, living in Acadian Canada, because my teachers seemed completely different people when they spoke English vs. French. I think it's one of the only good habits I picked up from learning French in a classroom setting, and I find myself absorbing some of the traits of people who speak each language very intuitively. Because of this, I don't really have a hard time switching quickly between languages or studying two languages at the same time (except Irish and Romanian, not sure how I get them confused because they're pretty dissimilar lol). Recently I started learning Fusha and after remembering that you said MSA and Quranic Arabic were really similar I decided to try picking up some vocab with Kalaam. Well, I accidentally fell in love with The Quran and now I've shifted my focus to learning that instead of MSA! Turns out you learn a lot faster when you enjoy what you're learning lol. I get so into the "Arabic language rhythm" that I find sometimes even without the harakat, I can guess how the word will sound even if I have no idea what it means. I guess that's something similar to a language personality (or more of a mindset?). Always love watching your channel, seeing your face light up when you speak in a language you love motivates me so much! أسلام عليكم ❤️
The whole personality idea is so true and honestly a game changer. I’m fluent in Spanish and English and am now learning French however I’ll find that I’m constantly and accidentally speaking a weird French/Spanish mix it’s the most hilarious and annoying thing 😂
As a refugee, I had to deal with "forced" language learning, very focused and goal-oriented. But I am so much into enjoying languages I really love to hear and listen: to Spanish, Italian, and Polish. If you're a native of one of these and interested into the Russian language - I'd love to exchange
انا شايف انك الشخص الوحيد اللي بحب اسمعله باي لغة I think that you'ar the only person to love hearing you in any language Je pense Tu es le personne qui j'aime parler avec les langues différentes
It happened to same to me with Mandarin, after a few months off, when I go back to it, after a first period of "dryness", at one point I feel it's ramping up faster and better
4:27 I had the same experience Im learning Russian and im fluent in Korean, took a break being lazy learning Russian and came back to it and I just could remember phrases and vocabulary

regarding the break thing at 4:05 this similar phenomenon has happened to me in gaming, so i stopped playing this game and played other games and after a few week break and coming back to play it i somehow became a tad better. its like your brain has been refreshed and can do them easier after the break

Hey I'm studying Spanish and Portuguese. If you don't have this book already, the book Pois Não is great for teaching the similarities and differences between Spanish and Portuguese. And the podcast Ta Falado helps explain the differences in pronunciation between them. Good luck and I wish you success!
Yes! My experience is the same when I take a break and then resume, my progress is remarkably advanced. I’d expect to have deteriorated or stood still but quite the opposite happens.
@@derkonigmohammed4276 Of course you can, especially if your level of English is better than German. In terms of grammar, there is no problem because the grammar is completely different. The pronunciation is also different and you will not face any difficulty in differentiating between the two languages. But I expect that when you start speaking German, you will replace many German words with English 😅😅 but with practice you will overcome that.. Regards
Yes I’ve definitely experienced taking a break from one language while learning another.
Learning French and Portuguese starting from 0. Thank you for sharing.
Yes this can definitely happen, thanks for your comment 👍
Continue aprendendo português, é um idioma muito bonito, a capacidade de se expressar nessa língua é libertadora. I hope you keep learning Portuguese, and when you feel comfortable, come to Brazil to enjoy the carnival 🎉
Does Spanish and Portuguese have many grammar differences?
@@hanoitripper1809 when you talking about grammar, I would say yes. But speaking, is very similar.
@@windesonbrenner2740 muito obrigado
Your arabic is so amazing! Btw many people don't know how to use the Arabic word "يعني" but you use it flawlessly!!
بآرك الله فيك!
You spoke very fast, but i could catch you. So clear words ,easy to understand. You make me want to speak English fluently❤🙏
Me too
I would say much about my experience, but this video covers in nutshell the idea and I totally agree with it. Thanks
Thank you, Pavel
Happy to have your guidance, Brian. Thank you!
So I really appreciate this man ❤️
I’m glad it was helpful, and thanks for watching 👍
These principles we're so unusual for me but this video showed took a good proof into account, thank you so much!
I love it.
Taking time off a language definitely lets it sink in.
ive found that concept of advance maintain alternation on my own,, so glad u said that its not so weird 😃 that's what i do
Thank you for this video!
I am learning Russian, Latin and classical Arabic at the same time, I find it easier to differentiate languages when you are at different levels
Yes, I definitely also have to ‘warm up’ when I get back into a language after taking a break!
that was a great lesson. I so get it
مصر وحشتك ولا ايه يا براين❤
Thank you for sharing these valuable tips! It's hard to choose between two languages, so I decided to learn both (Arabic and Japanese in my case). But I would say that learning multiple languages can slow down our progress
pareil
For me, I feel like being a person with a lot of humors who can be a lot of fun when I speak Korean which is my mother tongue, super polite person when I speak Japanese, super sophisticated and delicate when I speak French, and confident and more manly when I speak English.
that's an amazing video!!
Thank you, Yazeed
I’m currently self-learning Japanese, and this year, I’ll be continuing French(3rd year of it) and practicing ASL, and this’ll definitely help(along with them being very distinct in terms of the alphabet and vocab)
As an English speaker i must say…. Your English is great!
4:04 bro this is so relatable, i don't even know why bother learning a language when you can just kinda do nothing - you gonna get better at it anyway...
Amazing video great tips 💯👍🏿
Great video 😎, in fact I agree with you on several things. I am a beginner in both languages that I am learning now, but I feel this wonderful change in my personality, and it is really boring and difficult to devote the same time and effort to learning two languages together, so I was pleased with your words about taking a break and It does not impair progress in the language learning process. Keep it up, the video was on time 😁
Thanks, and thanks for watching 🙏
4:05 I’ve had similar experience. I wouldn’t say I got better but I would say I remember more than I thought I would. Thank you for this video, it really helps. I had no idea about any of this!
Oh my God! Your pronunciation is amazing
I was watching the series Billions and I was shocked when I saw you in it. You are a very excellent actor
This helped, I’m gonna be learning a few languages at the same time now.
I speak English and Greek, and I'm learning German at the moment and I often get completely confused when I want to switch from one language to another🙉🙉
3:49 this is how i learn both fusha and 3amiya arabic,3amiya arabic is obvoiusly derived from fusha so really i m just learning formal informal
I am happy to benefit from the videos. I wish you the best. Thank you🥰🥰
I remember Steve Kaufmann talking about languages "gestating" in your mind when you take a break from them and I really felt like I could relate with this sensation!
Greetings Brian 👋🏻
يا ريت يا براين تعمل سلسلة عن ازاي نفهم الامريكيين لما بيتكلمو بسرعة و بياكلو حروف
I'm actually learning French and mandarín at the same time and... it isn't easy. Thanks for your advises. ❤
انا شايف انك الشخص الوحيد اللي بحب اسمعله باي لغة
I think that you'ar the only person to love hearing you in any language
Je pense Tu es le personne qui j'aime parler avec les langues différentes
It happened to same to me with Mandarin, after a few months off, when I go back to it, after a first period of "dryness", at one point I feel it's ramping up faster and better
4:27 I had the same experience Im learning Russian and im fluent in Korean, took a break being lazy learning Russian and came back to it and I just could remember phrases and vocabulary
هترجع مصر ايمتا ي براين😢❤❤❤❤❤
فيديوهاتك وأنت في مصر تحفةةةة😊❤❤❤
Wow I was just thinking about French as I’m learning Spanish but thought about the many similarities and figured it would be more confusing…then I found this video and you said what I was thinking all along 😆👌🏾 genius and thanks 🙏🏾👌🏾🔥🔥🔥
You speaking Arabic and A PERFECT EGYPTIAN ACCENT WAS MIND BLOWING ❤
Now i am learning both English ( my current level is B1) and French ( as a beginner A1)
This video is so inspiring as I’m also wondering if I can learn French and Spanish at the same time. I’ve got my own answer after watching you sharing about it. Thanks for the motivation!
In learning Spanish and Portuguese, I have found it helpful to study them side by side, looking at the similarities and the differences, to keep them straight. Best of luck to you!
I can speak hindi,urdu, English,arabic,german alhamdulillah 🥰
Watching this video while learning literally English, Spanish, Russian and Italian at the same time 😭
the same languages i wanna learn but i haven't started yet. how do u learn them? which apps do u use
@@asmaasayed192 tbh, i only use Duolingo for the basic stuffs, but if u wanna learn more, you should learn from videos on TH-cam or make international friends. They actually help me a lot with practicing.
@@asmaasayed192 Use Duolingo at the start to learn the alphabet and as many basic words as possible( you are not forced to finish an entire unit you can do the first part and skip to another unit) then download a grammar book read and exercise then read books and watch series un the language you learn easy right
Precious advice, thanks Brian
I really want to learn both Japanese and Korean. I feel limited when I’m only learning one thing because I have a tendency to switch interests every few days. I’m not going to lie, I viewed the tendency as a nuisance, but because of this video I now see it as an opportunity. Thank you greatly!!! 😎🤙
regarding the break thing at 4:05 this similar phenomenon has happened to me in gaming, so i stopped playing this game and played other games and after a few week break and coming back to play it i somehow became a tad better. its like your brain has been refreshed and can do them easier after the break
I found the language personality very interesting & definitely will be very helpful. I am wanting to learn Russian & Romanian as I would like to travel to Moldova which speaks both those languages but also Russian is a popular language in the Baltics too as well as other Eastern European countries.
I am planning to start learning korean and Portuguese in this month at the same while currently I am at level B2 in Spanish but I was afraid to start 2 new languages from complete beginner level however after watching your video and other people's comments I am getting confidence to start learning ❤
Love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Hey I'm studying Spanish and Portuguese. If you don't have this book already, the book Pois Não is great for teaching the similarities and differences between Spanish and Portuguese. And the podcast Ta Falado helps explain the differences in pronunciation between them. Good luck and I wish you success!
I notice improvement in my language skills after a break too, particularly in my ability to understand.
Yes! My experience is the same when I take a break and then resume, my progress is remarkably advanced. I’d expect to have deteriorated or stood still but quite the opposite happens.
01:45 أقسم بالله نفس الشعور تماما بس بين الانكليزي و الالماني 🤦♂🤦♂ .. رائع انت
what do you think ; i learn german and english at the same time can I learn them quickly but my level in English is B1
Regards
Waw man you inspired me to learn two languages at the same time. Thanks with these rules it will be good Thanks
Yes I’ve definitely experienced taking a break from one language while learning another. I started Spanish lessons in early 2023 in January 2024 I started learning Ukrainian and took a break from Spanish. 4 months later I’m back in Spanish lessons and I was completely shocked how much came back to me when I started to speak with my Spanish instructor.
I want to learn Turkish and Greek at the same time and I thought I was a little crazy. This reassures me he he he
you help me so much, i am learning english, i have a nice level, and using your videos and tips to learn mandarin, help so much and show were on my studies i need to improve, thank you
I’m glad you found the videos useful- thank you!
I didn’t practice German for about six months, except for reading on my way to and from school. Before that break, I was around a B1 level, but when I got back to studying, I was surprisingly at B2. I mean, I did read Harry Potter on the metro, but I didn’t think that was enough to move from B1 to B2.
Good stuff! Doing French (intermediate) and Mandarin (beginner)
Hope it helps me a alottt!!! I am interested in learning languages man!
